As a SciFi aficionado, the Google Deep Dream project fascinated me from the first second I’ve heard about it. In short, it’s an algorithm that locates and alters certain patterns identified in pictures, then it renders back to you the tweaked imagery, based on different parameters, and the results are sometimes nightmarish and at other times strangely… artistic.

I like to tell the following joke a little too often: a team of scientists asked the most intelligent computer they had built: “Is there a God?”, and the computer said “There is NOW”. In order to birth the Google Deep Dream project, programmers created an artificial neural network, modeled after the human brain, a computer that can learn on its own. If they can learn, will they eventually dream? Will they make art? When we go deeper down the AI rabbit hole of what-ifs, I wonder how alien would visual art be, if based on a completely different set of rules of aesthetics, and the conceptual result of huge amounts crunched-in data.

Jeroboam’s Boha (meaning “she” in Ukrainian and pronounced “voNa”) is the result of a collaboration between Dmitriy Slesariev, owner of Parfum Buro and François Henin of Jovoy Paris and Jeroboam.

François Henin: “If you want to get your own fragrance of a Ukrainian woman, you have to ask them questions. The whole country has to be questioned: the people who understand fragrance, men and women who are somehow connected to fragrances. The answer of people in the streets will surprise us as they will be different from those of journalists, fashion magazine editors, professionals of the market. You know me, I am crazy enough to do something that has artistic value and sense.”

 Jeroboam Boha was a meticulous and herculean adventure that took two years to complete. The team gathered various statistic data, studied local trends, targeted different focus groups, observed specificities and preferences and created in-depth fragrant questionnaires in order to pin point the most precise perfume profile of the Ukrainian women, in a perfume inspired and dedicated to them. Dmitriy Slesariev, François Henin, and perfumer Vanina Muracciole played with various ideas, tweaking every aspect until the pieces finally fell into place, and Jeroboam Boha, as we have it now, was created.

The first whiff feels just like taking a bite out of a fresh granny smith apple, down to its seedy core – a burst of green, crisp bergamot, together with a mouthwatering green almond. The shade of vegetal, leafy bright green slowly dissolves into fine nervures of white petals, and the aria sung by the trio of gardenia, jasmine and orange blossom reaches its perfect harmony.

Perfumer Vanina Muracciole, a virtuoso musk alchemist, concocted a “deep dream” scented algorithm, making the flower bouquet bloom in surprising and multidimensional ways, adding enveloping amber accords, and framing the base with oakmoss and sandalwood. The result is the white flower perfume that is both universally beautiful and intricately deep.

Jeroboam Boha was launched in 2018, and the nose is Vanina Muracciole.

    Wonderful review, Nicoleta! I haven’t heard of DeepDream project before, seems fascinating (although I prefer Vincent’s vision 🙂 )

    One little note, though: it’s “vona”, the A is stressed: the lowercase “н” (“n”) looks almost the same as the uppercase “H” in Cyrillic, that’s why it’s easy to confuse the latter with the Latin “H”. Hope this helps.

    I’ve yet to learn about the google deep dream project…but now it has peaked my interest.

    Someone already mentioned it but yes, “vo-NA” is the pronunciation.

    This is such an intriguing fragrance to me! My whole family is Ukrainian emigrants who left during WWII, so I grew up very much immersed in the diaspora culture of Ukrainian-Americans in the northeast US.

    It’s so interesting to see what the results of this perfume’s composition were!

    I would definitely have expected to see poppies, wheat, and/or sunflowers referenced but this perfume went deeper than the obvious floral/vegetal references of the nation to instead capture a sort of deep feminine emotional state, a sort of cool elegance and harmony.

    Having grown up in a Ukrainian community this definitely resonates with me even if as a mostly-American culturally I don’t feel I embody it myself.

    I feel like my mom would love this perfume, and I would be really curious to try it! Thank you so much for this article that delved into the inspirations behind this fragrance!

    So much effort must have been put into this fragrance. It’s great getting background info like this. This is the first time I’m hearing of The Deep Dream Project. I think the women of my home country, Denmark, should have a fragrance dedicated to them. Ocean breeze, freshly baked bread, elderflower, strawberries. Our summers smell so good.

WHEW! I’ve never heard of the Deep Dream Project before. And I think the women of Greece (Mediterranean, I believe), or the women of Ireland (rolling hills,greenery and Irish whiskey) should have a fragrance dedicated to them.

    I’ll have to have a look at this Google project. It sounds interesting.

    I enjoyed reading how Nicoleta delved into the story behind Boha. It was interesting to read that this fragrance was made for a focus group. Meticulously created to reflect the strong character of Ukrainian women.

    I would love to see a fragrance dedicated to the women of Britain. I would imagine this would be a beautiful sophisticated rose fragrance.

    I thought the Google Deep introduction was fascinating, especially in the context of a perfume overview! A perfume that takes two years to complete and resembles a bouquet blooming in surprising and multidimensional ways perks my interest.     Wow this sounds amazing! So many things were interesting but one was the note of green almond that I’m not sure I have tried before. I have never heard of the Google Deep Dream Project. I would be interested in a perfume for an African country’s women to reflect a culture not usually associated with perfume in the European sense. I live in the UK

    I’d not heard of the Google Deep Dream Project. I find it really interesting that the “perfect perfume” for the Ukrainian woman is a heady white floral that seems to balance greenness, sweetness, lushness, and earthiness. Sounds absolutely beautiful! I especially love the inclusion of almond. As for which demographic of women should have a scent crafted after them–interesting question! And hopefully this isn’t too much of a “cheating” answer–I’d be curious to see this executed over a variety of demographics. Thanks for the draw–I’m in the US.

    I hadn’t heard of the “Google Deep Dream Project” before, but I’m very interested in this fragrance dedicated to Ukrainian women. The notes seem wonderful. I am also excited to see it was created by Vanina Muracciole, the nose behind Masque Milano Kintsugi. It would be nice to see a fragrance dedicated to African or Middle Eastern women. I am in the USA.

    What a great tribute to Ukranian women! Packaging is stunning, as always, and the multidimensional bouquet sounds very appealing to me: white florals are by far my favourite notes. I love Insulo from Jeroboam and I hope to purchase it soon! It would be lovely to try this amazing fragrance too!

    I’ve never heard of the Google DeepDream project but I guess programs like that are inevitable with the advancements in AI. Jeroboam Boha sounds elegant and lovely with the deepdream assisted blooming bouquet of white flowers. I would love to see a fragrance based on women of Scandinavia. I imagine dry woods, herbs and an ozonic accord that mimics frost. Commenting from MD. USA.

    I’ve tried this one in the Jovoy boutique!! I will say it’s absolutely one of the best warm weather white floral fragrances I’ve ever smelled! Hauto from the same house is another great one.

    Wow the passion and connection of country and fragrance are wonderful . I want to eat a big juicy apple after reading this review. Boha sounds zingy and bright leadings to think the Ukraine is also like this full of bright and wonderful people. I’m from Ireland/EU and never heard of the Google’s deep dream project. I think Irish women should definitely have a perfume dedicated to them.

    Linking something deeply complex (the algorithms behind DeepDream) to the creation of a perfume leads me think Boha is complex as well — and that makes me very curious about it. Yes, I’ve heard of DeepDream before (and seen some of its creations). I think a perfume for an African country’s women would be interesting. I live in Italy.

    The whole multi-dimensional amber and flowers sounds great, and I have been looking for a green apple scent. Google’s Deep Dream is fascinating to me. AI in general is fascinating. AND doing so much research to make a perfume for a nation’s women is fascinating. I think the women of Iceland should have their own scent. That would be pretty neat. I am in KS.

Also Jeraboam Boha named for Ukrainain women, sounds beautiful with apple accords. I would hope that a fragrance would be made with a Botswana woman in mind. USA

    What a delightful and multifaceted article. Please allow me to organize my thoughts a little.
    1. I loved Nicoleta’s article due to its structure and the very varied ideas contained in it. The Google project; the small interview; the description. The perfume made my mouth literally water, when I got to the crisp apple, lemon and almond part. As a lover of white flowers, the trio sounds wonderful as well.
    2. I am in the European Union.
    3. This is the first time I hear about the Google Deep dream project! Very interesting, especially for a tech noob as myself.
    4. I think every country’s women should have at least a perfume dedicated to them. Actually, that is a wonderful idea and if a perfumer had such an interest in cultures and people, it would make a delightful and varied collection. I am just thinking of the fairylike Japanese women, with a mysterious and demure smile and an absolutely striking black-white-red contrast. Also of the Scandinavian queens of ice, with their crisp, statuary presence. Of Italian women, solar, passionate and loquacious. Of Morrocan women, with their wonderful eyes and their lively colors. Honestly, it would make a sin to just sing praises to one nationality.

    What I love about perfumes in general is that there is always room to become inventive and artistic, to do something out of the ordinary in order to achieve something great. This is the case of Boha – I have never imagined or even thought about a concept like this one. It is a genius move and touch in my humble opinion. I wonder how it smells. I am in EU. Thank you!

    I had not heard of the Google Deep Dream Project prior to this but it is certainly interesting. The images shown created by it are wild and super interesting. I found it interesting that there is a “deep dream scented algorithm” in the perfume making it seems particularly the florals come out in numerous different ways. I also wonder if it smells overtly feminine being based on an ideal perfume for Ukrainian women. I dont mind wearing perfumes others may view as feminine but if it was too much so for my taste I’d give it to my girlfriend or mother if one likes it more. It’s hard to say which country should have a perfume created based on its women they are all so unique, the women I mean. It’s a large and diverse country but perhaps Brazil. Commenting from CT USA.     Al the notes give me the feeling that feminity essence was captured and bottled as a scent. Perhaps the minds behind it managed to achieve what Jean-Baptiste Grenouille suceeded in the novel/movie Perfume?
    Nevertheless, I think it would be a great gift to my wife, to complement her eternal beauty to me.

    Nicoleta’s intriguing description of the crisply vegetal scent with notes of jasmine transported me to cycling along the Italian coast in the summer in Puglia. I wish I was there now.

    I’m currently in Charlottesville, which I associate with leather, tobacco, and smokiness.

    I hadn’t heard of the Deep Dream project before, but it’s fascinating–the included rendition of Starry Night is equal parts mesmerizing and disconcerting.

    I think Chinese women of Sichuan province deserve a perfume… the verdant rolling hills, endless bamboo forests, terrifically spicy food, sharp wits–I miss it all!

I’d never heard of the google deep dream project before, but it does seem like an interesting endeavor. I love green floral fragrances and I can see how those smells could be connected to such a surreal scientific concept.
    I would love to see a fragrance in honor of women of indigenous peoples, perhaps in Polynesia or Alaska. Hopefully some of the proceeds could go to supporting women in those communities as well.

    I truly love the idea of this fragrance! I have no idea how close to the Ukrainian women this fragrance is, but I like it. Perhaps I’ll find through a fragrance, some long lost Ukrainian genetics in my blood! Haha

    Yes, I’ve heard of project Deep Dream. It unnerves me, but I have to admit it has a quality of art that is sometimes pleasing. Having said that, I always expect a thorn and don’t trust it. The picture of the Gardenia looks wet, which is a beautiful visual, having no idea what the original photo looked like.

    I do think that American women should have a perfume. America is so diverse, it would be interesting to see what resonates fundamentally. And if this would be too daunting, then please consider the Scottish women, as I am partly Scottish, deeply in love with my heritage.

    I love the idea of creating a fragrance representing women (and men) of a country. I had not heard of the Google Deep Dream project and I’m still suspicious of computer generated fragrances, so I’m glad they used the statistical data and let Vanina Muracciole take wheel. It sounds like a lovely fragrance. I’m a Dutch woman from Dutch/Indonesian descent and I’m quite happy to be represented by Amsterdam from Gallivant on the Dutch side, but a fragrance inspired by Indonesian women would be lovely… Marit, UK

    Really interesting review,i have not heard of the google deep dream projecct before so i need to check it out.It is fascinating that they conducted surveys in order to maximize the result of the smell so it can represent in the best way their muses.I believe that it should be interesting to create a fragrance based on colombian women ore greek women(since iam from Greece,i would find that very intriguing)

    What sparks my interest is that the perfume was made by gathering data, rather than a perfumer coming up with an artistic approach. I think it is a new approach that might lead to a great perfume. The notes themselves are lovely as well. As for the Google Deep Dream Project, I am surprised that I have never heard of it as it sounds fascinating. For a country’s women perfume, I think London would be quite interesting as it is the melting pot for so many different cultures. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

    Having had Ukrainian neighbours for some years have me some insight in Ukrainian preference for scents. Starting off with food choices, there is red cabbage, beetroot, garlic, Harrington, Granny Smith apple……..hmmm. Then beverages, vodka, vodka, vodka and freshly made orange juice with a twist…….hmmm. Now I’m curious; is this the deep dream? Apple, orange, flower and Woodstock notes. The combination of the notes only gets you so far in the deep dream imagination so I would like to sample this in Belgium. Thank you Nicoleta and Jovoy!

    Wonderful review Nicoleta. In a deeplearning specialization (https://www.deeplearning.ai/ ) I did recently, we in fact created artwork similar to the one shown (Louvre in Van Gogh Starry Night style) using Deep Learning AI technologies. I do wonder at times how it would be to use neural networks to create perfumes – it seems we are a long way from there.

    I had no idea that Boha would be called voNa. Two years in the making and reflecting the sublime beauty of Ukranian women, this is bound to be a beautiful perfume. Thanks for the draw and the review. Writing from the USA.

    I love Vincent Van Gogh and the deep dream interpretation of his painting is fascinating! Loved the review and I’m really impressed about the amount of work that went in to find the fragrant interpretation of Ukrainian women! I’m really looking forward to trying it!

    The parent company I know, Psychedelique is beyond gorgeous, one of the best patchouli scents ever , but Jeroboam is new to me. White flowers and green apple Boha I would like to experience.

    What I’m enjoying the most in Boha is the base , oakmoss and sandalwood balancing the florals well.
    I’m not familiar with Jeroboam, but I know Jovoy.

    Nicoleta, excellent review of Jeroboam Boha. This is such an awesome concept to develop a fragrance dedicated to Ukranian women or any country of women for that matter. The way Nicoleta describes the note breakdown and phases of this fragrance sound beautiful. I haven’t heard of the Google Deep Dream Project before. This is really facinating how this algorithim is related to art. I think the women of the USA should have a fragrance dedicated to them. I am from the USA. Thank you for the giveaway.

    I know what it is to smell while awake and what is to smell in a dream. Nicoleta’s piece makes me ask the question, what does a ‘fresh granny smith apple’ smell like in the digital space? Or even in a digital dream state? How does an algorithm interpret smell? I have heard of the Google Deep Dream Project but only in relation to the visual—not the olfactive. I would like a perfume dedicated to the women not of country but to the women of the continent of Africa. It must be strong and multifaceted. Here in California

    I find it fascinating that a fragrance can take up to two years to develop. I consider that pure dedication and love of one’s work and passion. It’s like the work of real scientists. I think the women of south Africa should have a perfume dedicated to theme love their culture and dressing.
    I haven’t heard of the Google Deep Dream Project before.

    Everybody knows Jovoy if you’re a fragrance enthusiast, but Jeroboam I think not many know about. Boha expression i’ve heard before.
    The fragrances is intriguing because it draws inspiration from what supposedly Ukrainian women should like , i’ve never heard of a fragrance made to basically represent a country ?!?!?

    Excellent review by Nicoleta! I love that the inspiration for this one is to capture the essence of a Ukranian woman. This is the first time I have heard about The Deep Dream Project and I look forward to doing more research. The Maasai women of Kenya should have a perfume dedicated to them because they are strong warriors and nomadic. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

    I love the green apple note — I’m not sure I’ve ever smelt green apple in a perfume! I wonder if a computer will ever compose a perfume? And… I would want to compose a perfume for women in Nepal— something having to do with tea, high altitudes, snow, and woodsmoke…

    Those Google Deep Dream images are trippin’ me out. I’d love to give this one a sniff and also see what my two Ukrainian co-workers think of it! I’d love to see more nationalities and cultures interpreted in fragrance, but I think it would require a lot of thought, collaboration, and sensitivity. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

    I’ve never heard of this project before. But the fragrance sounds like an interesting concept to capture the essence of the Ukrainian woman! It sounds fun but I’m not sure words could capture it so I’d love to try it in person. I think a Brazilian perfume would sound good. I live in the USA.
