Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria Review (Dominique Ropion) 2021 + Holy Grail Vanilla Draw

Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria Review

I have a newfound love for vanilla scents (new but INTENSE, especially in the last year); and a lifelong admiration for one of the most respected, prolific and brilliant artists in the perfume world: Dominique Ropion. The news that Laboratorio Olfattivo was going to launch a new vanilla-centered perfume, created by THE NOSE himself, made me giddy with enthusiastic anticipation.

A note from the brand: For the Masters’ Collection, I wanted to create a perfume that expresses all the richness of Vanilla and its multiple facets. This creation is built around an LMR Vanilla bean of sublime quality, of which I have amplified the most subtle tones. This Bourbon Vanilla, grown in the heart of the Indian Ocean, is extracted using CO2, a cold extraction technique that reveals the full spectrum of its gourmand, floral, leathery and spicy notes. Its leathery character is reinforced by saffron and its addictiveness by the tonka bean, while the enveloping layers of incense add the texture of a mystical aura” –Dominique Ropion

From first reading the label of the bottle, I had a double path open in front of me:  the English-speaking part of my mind smiled at the catchy play-on-words on vanilla, and my predominant, native Latin side that recognized the Italian word “vanagloria”. Vanagloria, translated as “vainglory” is an archaic synonym for vanity, that prior to the 14th century had a more nuanced symbolism than in today’s use, with its plain simplified narcissistic undertones. The “old ways” drew a clear demarcation, focused on purpose:  between the pure glory that found meaning in the religious view of a higher good and the glory sought for trivial,  mundane pursuits (“vain”, meaning “empty” – the Latin “vana Gloria” being literally translated as “empty glory”). So basically, vanagloria was the earthly pursuit of glory, and in this case, for me, fell more into context with tales of medieval bravery, victorious battles, sound of swords, knightly prowess, and the joyous, fun, and light-hearted form of “boastfulness” that is found in a minstrel’s song.

More often than I care to admit, I imagine, especially when being very stressed, that a minstrel is narrating what goes on around me by singing, in a soft, melodious voice. If you remember the “Brave Sir Robin” song sketch from ”Monty Python and the Holy Grail” you will have a perfect snapshot of what goes on in my head. So let me bring out my fiddle and begin:

The first taste of Laboratorio Olfativvo Vanagloria brings to the palate the slightly spicy, fruity, and ripe taste of pineapple – don’t imagine the sugared canned variety, but more the idea of a waxy, green awakening chord, like the high pitched first string of a lute, drawing attention to the singer. Immediately we are embraced by the leathery, slightly bitter nuances of the vanilla, placed in perfectly balanced context with saffron – fitting perfectly, just like exquisite gold lettering ornamenting the crest of an ancient coat of arms.

The Damsel of the Sanct Grael by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Next, Laboratorio Olfativvo Vanagloria draws me deeper into the escapist spiral of romanticized medieval associations: reverbed steps echoing on stone corridors, the lights of yellow torches flickering long shadows on the walls, the rich fabric of tapestry holding in its dust endless generations of robed silhouettes carrying smoky incensed offerings. At this phase, the fragrance feels meditative, deep, and mystical but its mood is never somber or morose. The crescendo of tension stops, and slowly, the muscles relax, the shallow quick breath turns to sighs of deep, rhythmical, relaxed breathing. The hero arrives in the banquet hall, lays down on fur-covered sofas, and the air curls up around him and softly blooms into gourmand territory. A feast of expensive, opulent (and non-historically-accurate) desserts avalanche on the wooden tables: gold plates filled with vanilla custard tarts, carefully ornated silver cups filled to the brim with crèmes brûlées, puddings, and tonka bean panna cotta.

Mister Ropion’s creation is a mystical and aristocratic, yet joyous and natural take on vanilla. “A good perfume”, he says,”must always appear obvious.” Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria might just be the Holy Grail for any vanilla lover, a fragrance that can be worn either if you want an atmospheric, confidence-boosting epic anthem or a soft and comforting lyrical whisper.

Top notes: Saffron essential oil, Pineapple accord; Heart notes: Olibanum resinoid, Olibanum essential oil, Tonka Bean absolute; Base notes: Vanilla Bean extract CO2, Musk

  • The beginning of the fragrance is “spicy, fruity, and ripe taste of pineapple”. Definitely like all things vanilla especially excited about a fragrance centered around the richness of Vanilla. The beauty of calming and sweet vanilla is very inviting. I do have a favorite Laboratorio Olfattivo perfume as of yet. Definitely would like to try this.

I was intrigued by the extraction method of the vanilla using CO2 to capture the full spectrum of notes in bourbon vanilla. I haven’t tried this house yet, but this one and Mandarino sound quite interesting. I live in Maryland USA.

  • We all know that Dominique Ropion frequently delivers impressive perfumes, especially when he is given lot of liberty. Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria is a vanilla composition from Ropion so I am intrigued how his vanilla is similar to as well as different from other vanilla-centric compositions. It seems that this is a resinous vanilla composition which is not too gourmandy. I am in US

  • AleksCipri says:

I am not a huge fan of vanilla. To me it depends a lot on the other notes in the perfume, and straight up vanilla fragrances are just not interesting enough for me. Nicoleta’s review of Vanagloria really sparked my interest a lot, because of her description of the waxy, green pineapple opening. I think this could be one of those vanillas that I could really fall in love with. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • By chance I am wearing one of Dominique Ropion’s fragrances today – And the World is Yours. Vanagloria has me absolutely smitten at the spicy, bright green pineapple accord. Mixed with a rich vanilla it sounds like cool evening summertime perfection. There is no way I am not ordering a sample of this. I have yet to try anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo, but surely that is about to change. Thank you from the US.

  • I loved Nicoleta’s references to a medieval ambience, to castles, knights and times bygone. Very fit for what promises to be a timeless perfume, based on a note so classic, atemporal, asexual as vanilla. This one, paired with perhaps even more mystical saffron, olibanum and mask sounds like a gentle, comforting caress.
I dont have a LAboratorio Olfattivo favorite.

  • Ms Nicoleta made Vanagloria sound like I’m enjoying a delightful dessert in a incense infused room. Love the idea and on my wishlist it goes! Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • You got me at ‘slightly spicy, fruity, and ripe taste of pineapple’.
Thanks for the review and for the draw!

A “meditative, deep, and mystical” vanilla fragrance sounds wonderful.

My favorite LO scent is the softly vanillic Alkemi.

I live in Nashville, TN USA.

  • What a poetic review by Nicoleta! The fact that Dominic Ropion is the Nose behind this perfume already catches my attention, but the description of the perfume reminiscent of a medieval legendary relic is really sparking my enthusiasm. I love vanilla in perfume when wel done and would love to try this. Marit NL/EU

  • Nicoleta painted a nice, vivid picture of mediaeval times, monastery, castle, not sure which, maybe could apply to both. Maybe Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria is a Holy Grail for non-vanilla lovers, as I have not found a vanilla perfume I love. It could be because I have only come across vanilla vanilla scents. This one seems exquisite and worth checking out. I haven’t tried anything by Laboratorio Olfattivo, yet. Thanks for the lovely review and a generous draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Well, you’ve got MY attention as a lover of both vanilla and saffron! Is this the holy grail? I would love to get my nose on it indeed. Thanks for bringing my attention to it and the lovely Rossetti painting. I’ve not tried anything from this house, alas. In Maine, USA.

  • This seems to be an interesting vanilla fragrance with a unique pineapple note. I was glad to read this isn’t syrupy vanilla, but one with a green bite instead. Spices must add an intriguing touch. I still haven’t had a chance to try this line. I am in the USA.

  • I enjoyed how Nicoleta described the name of this fragrance, Vanagloria, vain glory. Also speaking about the fragrance that has ” A feast of expensive, opulent (and non-historically-accurate) desserts avalanche on the wooden tables” The notes sound fantastic, Pineapple and vanilla. I have not tried anything from this house. I have to. USA

  • I can certainly relate to those sudden and intense infatuations with fragrance notes or accords! Sometimes I wonder…was it meant to be? The fact that Ropion himself praises the quality of the vanilla bean in Vanagloria is less a spark of interest than a mature flame that seems to erupt in my solar plexus and spread to the tips of my fingers. Add to that the witty wordplay that Nicoleta so beautifully explored and it’s essentially case closed. Me want. A shrubbery! lol Always loved the idea of balancing the ripe and tangy facets of pineapple with the smoky, bitter and sometimes even salty elements of a leather accord – this time represented by a true vanilla. Marvellous medieval imagery too, despite the non historically accurate indulgences. 😛 Hey, we’re allowed to imagine! And to imagine another stunner by Ropion is no difficult task. Would go wonderfully with the elderberries that my father smells of. lol No farts in my general direction s’il vous plait!! Gawd I hope someone gets these references. Cheers. Mi, USA

  • chrisskins says:

Wow, Dominque Ropion. Take me away, Calgon. I love vanilla, saffron and tonka. Then pineapple!? Is this pineapple surprise like Aventus or point me to Maui pineapple? Either way, what excitement. The vainglorious discussion is very interesting. No skimming from me. I live in the USA.

  • I love vanilla and must buy this. I live in the USA
The review took me to a medieval church and feast. And Dominque Ropion?
Where is this sold in USA ?
Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria come to mamma

  • GennyLeigh says:

I understand the spiciness and herbal tang of the opening pineapple accord Nicoleta described. It sounds like a bracing start to the saffron and leathery aspects of the vanilla. I’m usually disappointed with the complexity of vanilla fragrances but this sounds like a sophisticated perfume made by a master. lol at the Monty Python reference. Run away, run away! No favorite Laboratorio Olfattivo as yet. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • This is for me! I love a deep vanilla scent, and I love Laboratorio Olfattivo (their Mandarino scent) and I love Dominique Ropion! The pineapple top note sounds dreamy. I’m in NYC.

  • Dubaiscents says:

A vanilla scent by the master, M. Ropion, himself?! I don’t need to read any further, I’m hooked! But thank you for your thoughtful description and lesson in Latin Nicoleta. I can’t wait to smell this, I’m not sure I’ve tried any from this house. US

  • I spent years on a quest for the holy grail of vanilla!!! Plus, you had me at “smoky incensed offerings”. I adore Tuberosis from the master series, I can’t wait to try this!!

    Texas USA

  • Lindsay Anne Magnuson says:

I often have a negative reaction to vanilla, but recently I’ve found some very appealing fragrances that are lovely with this note. I tried Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Mylo over the weekend, and found it very lush, perhaps even too much for me, as lily can give me a headache.

This combo of green pineapple, olibanum, a leathery vanilla, plus the mystical and meditative feeling this evokes paired with what sounds very sensual. I love frankincense! I’m in Portland, OR

  • Hashim Madani says:

Welcome to the vanilla obsessed club, Nicoleta. Gourmand or otherwise, well-created vanilla fragrances are nothing short of addictive. Vanagloria is hitting all the right spots for me: vanilla custard tarts, crèmes brûlées, puddings, and tonka bean panna cotta. I’m already drooling. Haven’t tried a Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrance yet. VA, USA

  • NiceVULady says:

I love vanilla and I love the fragrances of Dominique Ropion. I’m intrigued by the pineapple note. Many thanks to Nicoleta for just a beautiful review and many thanks to Laboratorio Olfattivo for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Oh,i love the ministrel singing picture of Nicoleta’s review, also the medieval interpretation of the scent. The vanilla lover in me is bursting in curiosity about this fragrance signed by Master Ropion-one of my favorites. Thanks for review and the draw from Romania-EU

  • I truly love how Nicoleta paints a such a photorealistic picture of a bygone era, weaving a delicate story around the olfactory impressions of this scent. As a vanilla lover, I must try this !
Thanks for the draw, based in the EU.

  • Love the work of Dominique Ropion he is capable of delivering some great perfumes. I am usually not so much into vanilla scents, but this one has me intrigued. Especially combined with a slightly spicy, fruity, and ripe taste of pineapple leaning towards the green end, makes me want to try this immediately! Living in the EU

  • Once upon a time, when restaurants were a haven of calm delights, a dimly lit dining room filled with the scent of pineapple, vanilla, and burnt sugar. Wedges of the tropical fruit had been steeped in vanilla bean and spices, then caramelized over an open flame. Served on a white plate, they rested in pools of creme anglaise. Vanagloria’s notes took me back to that wonderful evening. Thank you, Nicoleta, for reminding me. I’m in the US.

  • Vanilla is a note which is used very frequently in modern perfumery, but the quality varies a lot. In its synthetic form it doesn’t appeal to my nose, but the use of natural oils in this fragrance combined with saffron and pineapple, seems to produce a fascinating result. I especially enjoyed the medieval references Nicoleta made in her review.
I have not yet sampled anything from this house. Greetings from Greece

  • You had me at “pineapple”. I’m a sucker for mature fruity scents and these are surprisingly hard to come by. I’m optimistic that Vanagloria might be just what is missing from my collection, plus it’s hard not to be tempted by a good vanilla. Let’s see what Mr. Ropion has made of it. I actually enjoy numerous Laboratorio Olfattivo scents! I have and wear Baliflora and Alambar, my sister wears Tuberosis and my brother Nerotic. Thank you for the draw! Greetings from Greece, EU.

  • Ortansa Teodorescu says:

I love vanilla mixed with incest and spicy , so for sure this would be a Holy Grail for me. I am also a little bit curiose about this special Bourbon Vanilla from Indian Ocean with gourmand, floral, leathery and spicy notes.
Thank you Nicoleta for this review that send us directly in a mistycal time, where everything is souranded by smoky incest, spices, leather, tonka and powerfull vanilla. I am enchanted.

  • I liked the association with the opulent medieval banquet…
We all need a little olfactive richness, especially in these strange times…

  • I love vanilla and Dominique Ropion! Your review is great, i woud like to try it. Greetings from Romania, UE!

Love Ropion’s other masterpiece, he’s simply a genius everything he does become a must have or at least a must try in the fragrance community. Also really love the idea to collaborate with Laboratorio Olfattivo which is a realty 100% made in Italy, my origin coutry!
Can’t wait to try it since I really like vanilla note but if it’s done in a particular not super gourmand way.
    Sending love from Milan, Italy

  • I love the description on this one, as I am in the search for a perfect pineapple scented fragrance, that is not nauseating, not very gourmand, but more like an exotic fruit cocktail on a summer day at the beach, with blue waters and gold sand. I am currently in Romania.

  • glowquest_ says:

Just since reading this and seeing it on your Instagram, I immediately went to the website to look further. As a vanilla lover and a fan of Ropion, this sounds like an absolute treasure. I love that it isn’t just a straight up gourmand vanilla, and believe me I love those. Now I’m looking for something that has more depth and intrigue and boy does this fit the bill. Your description of the pineapple like opening and the swirling incense, giving a royal introduction to the plates of decadent desserts has me so excited! Oh and I love that you think of a minstrel narrating what’s going on, so funny NY, USA

  • At last, the holy grail for vanilla lovers… The thing that catches me most about this perfume is its “mystical and aristocratic, yet joyous and natural take on vanilla”. I believe this one has my heart. USA

  • Great explanation of the name of the fragrance Vanagloria. And the vanilla-saffron marriage sounds so perfect!

    Thank you from EU!

Wow, Dominique Ropion meets Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I’m intrigued. I too love a good vanilla and I’m interested to see it paired with pineapple. Does anyone remember 1804 from HdP? I think that was the George Sand one, I quite liked it. I think my favorite LO might be Alambar, but I haven’t had much experience with them.

  • Thanks for the review, Nicoleta!

Since these words come from a vanilla lover and this is what she calls – Holy Grail, everything becomes super interesting for me. I am also a vanilla addict!

I would love to disconver the “slightly bitter nuances of the vanilla, placed in perfectly balanced context with saffron – fitting perfectly, just like exquisite gold lettering ornamenting the crest of an ancient coat of arms”. So … thank you for the chance! Daimiris is my favorite offering Laboratorio Olfattivo, too bad is just a sample!

    I live in EU.

  • Dominique Ropion and holy grail vanilla in the same article. I’d love to try this. The pineapple note interests me. The banquet part caught my attention with all the vanilla desserts and not a cocoa bean in sight. I am not familiar with this line, but I am familiar with Dominique’s work. Thanks CaFleureBon and Laboratorio Olfattivo. USA.

  • Love vanilla and never heard of it in a fragrance with pineapple also which makes me really want to try this. I have no favorite from the house so far. US

Thank you for the interesting review. I have the feeling it became pretty rare to find perfumes , that use real vanilla, let alone CO2 extracted vanilla. I have heard of the brand Labori Olfattivo, but never tried one.

  • Ms. Ospina review of Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria made me very interested in the perfume . If you add the fact that Dominic Ropion is the nose behind it, definitely get all my attention even I am not a huge fan of vanilla in perfumes -the overly sweet- (though I am in the kitchen) but this year is the year of Vanilla (Centered Perfumes) , I guess the Maison Tahite brand is one of the big players now around these magic small pods.

Mr. Ropion explains that a CO2 cold extraction technique gives us the full spectrum of its gourmand, floral, leathery and spicy notes. This is music to my ears , medieval music with Nicoleta´s interpretation of the scent ;). I m a huge fan of Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino, a a long-lasting citrus by M.Ellena.

  • Dominique Ropion is a legendary perfumer. And he has used vanilla well in the past. The ripe pineapple has me intrigued.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Vanilla. Vanilla is so fascinating. Overdone in many ways but still entrancing. I love that it is still possible to come up with an unique vanilla fragrance. I am in the US and don’t think I’ve tried any Laboratorio Olfativo perfumes.

  • Camelcutza says:

I have to say I was drooling at the description of the desserts and that’s what got me interested in this scent! That and the pineapple accord.

How desirous it is, the temptation of romantized enticement, just impossible to say ‘non’, even if I wanted to, it would escape my voice as a whispered ‘Oui’. Deliciously interpreted by Nicoleta and with a pedigree of M. Ropion and the duo of Daniela and Roberto. I live in SW France.

  • vickalicious says:

The Holy Grail vanilla fragrance?I That alone has my attention!! I have always loved vanilla-dominant fragrances, and I like that the perfumer attempted to catch the various aspects of vanilla. I’ve learned over the years that vanilla fragrances can come in various iterations. The fruity notes, coupled with the leather, and of course the vanilla sounds very interesting. I’ve not yet tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances, but would love to try this one! Located in the USA.

I love this review and did not expect to think of “Brave Sir Robin” at all today. Thank you for that! From your review, I feel like this fragrance hits many of the realms of vanilla. Meditative, luxurious, comforting, carnal. I love vanilla and the way it fits into my life anywhere and everywhere. This fragrance sounds like it would too. And thanks for the etymology of vainglorious! Thanks for the draw from the US.

  • Ropion’s exploration of the many sides of vanilla is sure to be delightful! I have associated this house with Jean-Claude Ellena but I’d love to see what Ropion does here. I’m in the US, thank you for the review/draw.

  • This sounds beautiful! I like that he uses a cold extraction to enhance all the facets of the vanilla. I’ve never tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo. I will check out their other offerings because I am really intrigued by this fragrance.

Absolutely enchanted here!!! I have been basking in all the vanilla centered fragrances I own and dreaming of owning a few others from the ‘holy grail vanillas’ category. However, it looks like I might as well drop thinking of others and just settle for Vangaloria’s whispering beauty and enveloping sophistication. Nicoleta has painted an amazing picture of the perfume’s nuances by referring to a medieval castle, with its deep shadows, warm lights and numerous mysteries. I am not familiar with any Laboratorio Olfattivo perfumes but would love to rey Vanagloria. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Brave, brave, brave sir Robins.
What sparks your interest based on Nicoleta’s review? This sentence: Vanagloria might just be the Holy Grail for any vanilla lover. Wasn’t expecting pineapple accord listed in a vanilla forward composition, but that sparked my curiosity even more.
    State: Texas.

  • Nicoleta’s review sparked my interest from the word go. Holy grail vanilla, created by the nose, with olibanum, you say? And a pineapple opening.. interesting and wonderful! I find myself wishing for pool float in a swimming pool full of this scent where I could live on the rest of my days in pure vanillic bliss. I really must smell this, I will absolutely be seeking it out. Commenting from NY

  • Vanagloria sounds really great and I appreciated the lesson on its meaning as well, really cool. What really sparked my interest, as I love vanilla, is that you are getting a very natural vanilla and numerous facets of it highlighted with other notes. It sounds very interesting, multidimensional and unique. All of the notes are appealing and id love to win this but regardless I absolutely want to try it. I’ve not tried any perfumes from Laboratorio Olfattivo as of yet but have read about some here such as Mandarin, but looking at the website there are quite a few that sound amazing to me. Thanks so much for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Oh my This review has me seriously contemplating a blind buy! I don’t think I’ve ever smelled a vanilla with saffron. That sounds fantastic! Wonderful, word pictures in this review.
    I live in the US.

  • Wonderful review! I bow to Monsieur Ropion’s creativity as well as to Nicoleta’s imagination when it comes to fragrance-telling.
I haven’t tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances so far and this particular one sounds like a winner. How on earth would I ever miss a chance for a “mystical and aristocratic” Ropion vanilla?! 😀
    Greetings from Romania!

  • I love vanilla and I think I will love this perfume as well, since it was created on the idea of expressing all the richness of this note and all its’ multiple facets.
I am in EU. Thank you for the review and the draw!

  • I have tried a few perfumes created by Dominique Ropion and I liked them all. I am sure this one will be no exception as I am a vanilla lover.
    Romania, Europe. Thanks!

  • I really liked reading how when Nicoleta smelled the sweet pineapple and bitter subtlety of the vanilla, it made her imagine of a mystical and meditative space, like she was in a transcendent experience. I love imagining how spraying Vanagloria could make (in a romanticized way) the people around us feel safe and relaxed, just like aromatherapy!

Sadly never had the pleasure of smelling any of Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances, since they are not available in any of the stores near me.

Thank you Çafleurebon and Laboratorio Olfattivo for the giveaway.

Sending good luck to all from Portugal, EU.

  • confidence-boosting, that is very welcome right now. My favourite from the brand is Nerotic. I’d love to win Vanagloria to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • Loved the review! “tales of medieval bravery, victorious battles, sound of swords, knightly prowess, and the joyous, fun, and light-hearted form of “boastfulness” that is found in a minstrel’s song.” Vanilla and leather I’ve never tried a Laboratorio Olfattivo perfume, so I don’t have a favorite one. Commenting from Romania. Thank you for the chance!

  • Sounds glorious! Thank you for unpacking your associations with the name; these meanings never would have occurred to me. I love that this doesn’t sound too simple, predictable, or familiar. Something new to discover. (USA)

I loved everything about the fragrance, the name, the notes, the story, the fact that i was reminded of monty pythons holy grail, which iam going to watch again now.Iam not so familiar with the house,so i can not say i have a favorite and i live in Greece

  • ANDREEA ELENA TIMOFTE says:

Medieval, meditative, deep, mystical, confidence-boosting epic anthem or a soft and comforting lyrical whisper….interesting, interesting.
I would really loooove to try the new Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria.
This house is new to me.
    I live in London, UK.

  • Brand new house for me. Vanilla is my favorite note and the mystical/meditative vibe it claims to exude sounds divine. I live in Minnesota.

  • Based upon the review, I’m very interested in trying this fragrance for different reasons: “the slightly spicy, fruity, and ripe taste of pineapple”, what appears to be a high-quality use of vanilla (in regards to revealing many aspects of vanilla), and that the fragrance could be considered mystical because of, what sounds like, an enjoyable use of incense. I haven’t tried anything yet from this fragrance house, but I’d like to try all of their releases. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I would love to win Vanigloria you will laugh but I hate the greedy perfumes of vanilla but because I adore carnal flower and portrait of a lady by dominique ropion that I think that only he is able to make me love a scent of vanilla. I love when Nicoleta says: Mister Ropion’s creation is a mystical and aristocratic, yet joyous and natural take on vanilla. “A good perfume”, he says, ”must always appear obvious.” This is what I would like an obvious vanilla but superior to all the others: aristocratic. I live in France, EU.

  • Claumarchini says:

Thanks so much Nicoleta for this evocative review: I loved it! I must confess I am not a great fan of vanilla fragrances, but this one sounds really unique and a must-have! First of all because of the creator, the great Ropion, and because of the notes that accompany the vanilla: I absolutely adore saffron, incense and Tonka beans and I am sure this combination really creates a unique and elegant fragrance that I would love to explore.
    Greetings from Italy

  • I have a soft spot for interesting vanillas – my journey with fragrance began by my avid avoidance of standard vanilla fragrances one finds in department stores. I thought for the longest time that I would forever be outside the community that enjoyed gourmands and other sweet scents. I am now unashamed – I dislike very sweet vanillic fragrances, finding that I much prefer deep, smoky, or spicy vanillas, and Nicoleta’s review has sparked my interest. This sounds like a perfect vanilla for me, and it sounds like it would perform spectacularly during the summer nights in my home in New York.

  • Mariana63 says:

I love vanilla and I am sure Dominique Ropion did a great job on this one as he did in the past on his other creations. I don’t think I have tried a vanilla-centered perfume from him before, and that only makes me more eager to test this one.
Thanks for the draw! European reader here.

  • That combination of vanilla, pineapple accord and olibanum essential oil and resinoid really put my curiosity on fire!

Nicoleta’s interpretation of the ‘gilding’ effect of the pineapple and saffron really sparks my interest. For me, vanilla is best served with a twist, and this one sounds great. Vanilla perfumes are some of the most wearable ones out there, but you need those perfumes to be crafted with care and creativity to make them stand out of the crowd. I’ve never tried a Laboratorio Olfativvo perfume, but of course I’ve encountered many Dominique Ropion perfumes, he’s such a prolific and accomplished perfumer. I’m in the US, thanks for the fabulous draw!

  • jabostick1 says:

“ Laboratorio Olfativvo Vanagloria draws me deeper into the escapist spiral of romanticized medieval associations: reverbed steps echoing on stone corridors, the lights of yellow torches flickering long shadows on the walls, the rich fabric of tapestry holding in its dust endless generations of robed silhouettes carrying smoky incensed offerings.” I just want to jump into the bottle like the mad hatter into a tea cup. Sounds magical. I live in Providence.

  • I love the medieval paragraph about the lights of yellow torches, the rich fabric of tapestry, smoky incensed offerings, deep meditative and mystical mood. Relaxing muscles, deep rhythmical breathings, fur covered sofas and avalanche of opulent desserts. Beautiful vision. I’m in.
    From the EU.

  • Vanilla is one of the most common notes in perfumery nowadays, but it’s hard to get a vanilla note right – they are oftentimes too linear, saccharine, cloying, and airy, not fully reflecting the boozy, leathery, balsamic notes of real vanilla that I so love.

It seems that in Monsieur Ropion’s hands, the vanilla bean is safe: it will be presented in all its (vana-)glory, with the incense, saffron, and tonka accentuating all its idiosyncrasies. This sounds amazing.

I have yet to try any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrance yet, but have Mandarino on the way! I live in the US and would love to win this. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • I really like so many of Laboratorio Olfattivo offerings like nercotic. Vanagloria sounds like the opposite of dark and just what I would love to wear right now. Dominique Ropion is one of the best perfumers too

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparks my interest of Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria based on Nicoleta’s review is Dominique Ropions expert craftmanship that went into this beautiful vanilla fragrance using cold extraction. This also appeals to me because it is a sweet, spicy, and gourmand fragrance that I know I would love. I haven’t tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo, but based on this review Vanagloria would be my favorite from the house. I am from the USA.

  • Andreea Florica says:

I never tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo, but Vanagloria sounds exquisite! I love vanilla! Thank you for the draw. I am based in the EU.

  • Jannick85 says:

I love gourmands especially if the sweet notes are balanced with fresher notes or spicy notes like this one so would love to try this one.
    and I’m from Denmark

  • I’m so interesting a fragrance with pineapple as a note. I know there is a famous fragrance with that note, but other than that I don’t see it much.

  • wallygator88 says:

Reading Nicoleta’s review gave me the image of a vanilla bean on a pedestal at an altar in a large stone church, with grand arches, long pews, people kneeling and incesnse and hymns wafting to tantalize the senses and soothe them into a meditative state.

What a beautiful review and I am most thankful for it.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • The first description that Dominique makes of the perfume already captivates you. But Nicoleta’s review directly makes you fall in love.
Saffron, olibanum, tonka, vanilla and musk. Is a better mix possible? I believe that it is not possible.
I love Dominique’s work and I am sure that Vanagloria of Laboratorio Olfattivo is one of his best works. Greetings from Spain.
