L’eau par Kenzo Review (Oliver Cresp) 1996– The sensory deprivation tank

L’eau par Kenzo review 1996 by Olivier Cresp

“Water lilies load all over

The blue lake amid the woods,

That imparts, while in white circles

Startling, to a boat its moods.

And along the strands I’m passing

Listening, -waiting, in unrest,

That she from the reeds may issue

And fall, gently, on my breast”  Mihai Eminescu, Romanian poet, The Lake (English version by Dimitrie Cuclin)

Many years ago, a lady from Human Resources Department told me ( she seemed quite exasperated) that I’m the only “true INTJ*” she has ever met. In the Myer – Briggs personality tests I.N.T.J. stands for introvert-logical-intuitive – a type of personality that is found very rarely, in just under 0.5% of the female population tested.

If there was such a test in the world of perfumes, I think that L’eau par Kenzo composed by Olivier Cresp in 1996 would perfectly fit in the INTJ drawer. It is silent, introverted, contemplative, without too many sentimental outbursts, deconstructing nature and recomposing it from simple touches.

I remember the sample of that was a gift-with-purchase with a glossy magazine (that I used to buy only for the occasional perfume samples it held) in the year the perfume launched. The commercial was so wonderfully in tune with what I felt. I kept sniffing the sample, thinking, this is like an… implosion of happiness! The best kind of happy! Almost 10 years later, in one of my favorite movies of all times I found the perfect quote that sums up what I’m feeling while wearing it:

What is an INTJ female like

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie still

I think of L’eau par Kenzo as my own, personal “sensory deprivation tank” perfume. I close the lid to reality and I find myself, half asleep, chewing on some minty gum, the curve of my spine following the wooden curve of the boat, eyes watering from the sharp weightless blue of the sky. Suspended floating on my imaginary forest lake, surrounded by impossibly perfect waterlilies, ripe fluffy peaches, frozen in time, still and endless like in an eternal summer vacation time-loop.

  • I really enjoyed the comparison to the meyer Briggs tests
I went on line to take it and I was intp. I think something soft like lovely by sarah Jessica Parker or if vintage Anais anais

  • Great review Nicoleta! I loved how you described the sensation of this perfume, it sounds wonderful!

I’m an INFP-T, but I love to wear scents that announce “I’ve arrived!”

Thank you, Nicoleta! Wonderful comparison with “personal sensory deprivation tank”. I just took a test online and they say I’m INFP.
Several years I wore only L’eau par Kenzo pour Homme and I still like wearing it, when it snows. Waterlillies in Femme version are not so perfect for me, they does not goes well with my skin chemistry, but Homme version with green paprica and yuzu is perfect.
I loved many Kenzo’s in 90ies/00ies, so introvert and contemplative, sadly they are being discontinued, or reformulated and quality goes down.

  • I decided to take a personality test myself and found that I am a Protagonist (ENFJ-A / ENFJ-T).

It was interesting to see that my personality had an (subconscious) effect on my fragrance choices!

    Thanks for the article.

  • I’ve known it since he launched, I was in France and entering in a perfumery, I noticed the advert that fascinated me … in the perfume department there was an old man, very gallant, who asked me what I was looking for … I answered, obviously surprised and a little embarrassed, that I like and I was attracted by the presentation of the new perfume from Kenzo, she smiled, go back to the counter and came out with a small bag with the brand of perfumery, he put in, small fragrant gifts (samples) and handed to me, nicely and said … test them and come back later …. I was extremely surprised and I realised, that there are free testers and they are vital for the undecided … it was obvious that I had not entered to buy, but it was probably just as obvious my desire to try everything. Then, I bought this perfume, it always fascinated me … the mixture of lotus, mint, lilac, violet and red pepper are refreshing and unic … and when I saw the advert with Portishead in the background … it convinced me forever. Very profound description, Nicoleta! Love it!

INFP at home/in life – INTP at work.
Wondering about introverted fragrances, a few jump to mind, Bibliothèque by Byredo, Rentless by Lush, Olim by Trudon, Taurus by Strange Invisibles, Encens Jinhae by Atelier Cologne, the Cannelle candle by Diptyque. I suppose the theme here is frankincense, oak moss, incense, spices…. I would be curious of other INFPs have a preference for these too.
