The Lipstick Index: Wear Guerlain Shalimar on Your Lips

I own more lipsticks than I do perfume. Especially during the past few years while the economy has been difficult. Guerlain, must understand while I can’t afford to buy my beloved Nahema perfume, but now I can buy a Nahema lipstick.

While searching through the immense Guerlain archives, Olivier Échaudemaison found a small Art Deco wonder created in 1936 that captured his attention: the original “Rouge Automatique.” Though the legendary lipstick’s craftsmanship and hand finishes were commonplace at the time, the lipstick packaging was a revolution in itself with its single hand push to reveal luxurious color. Olivier now reinterprets Rouge Automatique for the 21st century – re-innovating the piece as the first lipstick without a cap and with an application technique requiring only a single hand.

With “Ne m’oubliez pas” (Forget me not) in 1870, Aimé Guerlain was the first to create the wax lipstick in a gold plated tube – inspired by a cylinder used to mold candles

  • Ahhh, what a delight! Shalimar in a lipstick, and in one of my shades – pink. Thank you so much for this very interesting article, Michelyn…..

  • Love this!  Guet apens is my favorite Guerlain…so I will have to hope the lip color works for me too.

  • Claudia Kroyer says:

I think Apres L'Ondee will be my color of choice. Loud lips do not work on me and make me feel clownish. I know some women can certainly pull it off……i tend to opt more for the quiet nude or beige colors. Nahema…beautiful fragrance, no doubt.

  • Mitsouko is just perfect! In everyway. The right color, wonderful fragrance. It could't have been better. This is a must have.

  • Wonderful! I love Chamade, and this Chamade will be a gorgeous color on me as well.

I was just thinking the other day about an Avon lipstick when I was little that had a similar one-handed slide to open it – how wonderful to see it come back again from what I’m sure was its original inspiration!

  • Wow, I had to look at the date of the post — could it be true? Is it April's Fool Day and it's just a joke?  These news are incredibly exciting!  My problem is that I don't wear my chapsticks nearly as often as I need to because their smell interferes with my perfume smell.  How adorable would it be to have an opportunity to match the perfume… I have to say, Chamade in pink jumped at me.  But what kind of pink?? I will have to check that out…

  • Ooh, that dark red Vega! Never tried the actual parfum, but now I have all the more desire to. Habit Rouge and Liu also look good…I love the reds, most go great with my skin. L'Heure Bleue and Chamade are beautiful too….I like some of les beiges (Apres L'Ondee, Vol de Nuit…) I even have to say the oranges are beautiful too, one might work for me (though I never cared for Orange lipstick)

  • Scentabulous says:

Beige for Jicky, Mitsouko, orange and Habit Rouge, red.  I could NOT choose one!  What else is new.  What about a purple … have been wearing purple/violets lately. ;-))

  • WARUM Guerlain doesn’t play jokes and I would never joke about a Guerlain 🙂
Scentabulous- looks like L’HEURE BLEU IS PRETTY PURPLE. I think I would wear so many I don’t know where to begin.
Ccc: Although I am not a fan of Mitsouko on my skin. wow on my lips 🙂
Taffyfontana: All Guerlain lipsticks and powders have a signature violet scent.
Perhaps the “ladies” of Guerlain can post a comment on your question regarding color.Yes swatches are deceiving.

  • I'm not normally a big fan of lipstick but the idea of wearing a lipstick named after a perfume REALLY connects with me (that should be odd, right?).
How were lipsticks applied before that required two hands? Did people use a brush?

  • I have been waiting anxiously for these!  I also have more lipstick than perfume.  Vega looks wonderful but I can't wait to see them all in person.
