"For Jasmin et Cigarette, I asked Antoine Maisondieu about his version of femininity. For him, it was jasmine twisted with tobacco."Etienne de Swardt, founder and Creative Director of Etat Libre D'Orange

Most of us in perfume land are familiar with niche fragrance house Etat Libre D'Orange and Creative Director Etienne de Swardt’s vision that fragrances should engage the senses, push our boundaries and as in the case ELDO's infamous first fragrance Sécrétions Magnifiques, provoke us.  I am a fan of many of the Etat Libre D’Orange scents because they don’t fear to travel the fine line between unique and unwearable.

My favorite is Jasmin et Cigarette,  the second fragrance released by Etat Libre D'Orange,  composed by master perfumer Antoine Maisondieu in 2006.  This is the perfume of a beautiful woman, surely with a past. I imagine her at a bar, oblivious to the No Smoking sign and no one cares or dares her to tell her to stub out the cigarette that fills the room and mixes on her skin with soft florals and the smell of smoke. There is something very French about this perfume, she actually talks to me, in a husky voice, in a language I don’t understand, but her meaning is clear. If ever a perfume was a conversation Jasmin et Cigarette speaks to me until the bar closes after her last set.

For my story I wanted to use Antoine Maisondeu’s idea of femininity and amplify it by adding the concept of feminine confidence and seduction.

There's something about a self-assured woman that has time and time again seduced  powerful men, (Samson and Delilah, Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, Helen of Troy and Paris, Josephine and Bonaparte, Marilyn Monroe and JFK). Was it their feminine wiles or was it their scent that brought them to their knees?

My Purgatory by The Nosey Artist

I could tell she was staring into my soul through the silhouette of her cigarette smoke as she exhaled the last drag of her Gauloise, unfortunately she failed to tell me what she  saw but judging by what I felt at the moment I had a pretty good idea…

For the first time in my life my macho bravado had completely faded away, my aura grey, my persona cloaked in cautious curiosity—I knew I was being led astray.

I was no longer surrounded by my corporate comfort and no amount of capital could provide me security. I was being strung along by a French jezebel who was both gamine and femme-fatale. From her bohemian chic style to her dark plum colored lip stick . She  smiled out of the corner of her mouth, lshe was letting me know that her seductive powers were  going to wear me down.

Charlotte Gainsbourg Heaven Can Wait

I fumbled through the silverware as I grabbed the spoon to stir my coffee, anything to keep my mind occupied, and then it hit me; that intense aroma that lifted off her skin and made its way to my nose. At first it was soft, subtle, and slightly soapy like the last cry for attention a white flower gives in the fall before it wilts and its beautiful smell fades away, but now it was singing to me in a rather melodic tone but with a deep and dark underlying story to it like the lyrics to Charlotte Gainsbourgs's Heaven Can Wait. The musky aroma of jasmine was uplifting and erotic all at the same time, and the sweet vanilla note paired with her natural smell was enough to subdue the alarming feeling I felt and keep me right in my seat to continue to fall victim to her mind games. I thought to myself, "Yes, heaven can wait and hell is too far to go- so for the time being I will allow her to be my purgatory."

I lifted my coffee to my lips and took a sip as I peered over to her from the edge of the cup. I knew I was in trouble but I was in no rush to save my self; I was buckled in for the ride no matter where she decided to take me…

.The composition notes are Jasmine absolute, tobacco, apricot, tonka beans, cedar, musk, and amber and depending on the time of year different notes take the lead while others create a foundational background. During the summer season,  the musky narcotic of Jasmine was much more noticeable,  even more so as the scent dried down and the tobacco notes surfaced  to kiss me  with red painted lips.  Now, during a cooler season the Jasmine note seems more fresh and slightly soapy and the tonka bean, with its hint of sweetness  mixes with the smoke at the dry down. Apricot is listed  but  I could never detect  it until I sprayed the fragrance on my friend who is a woman, and although as a man I wear  Jasmin et Cigarette  the nuances of the fragrance are, as perhaps they should be more noticeable on a woman. Sillage is excellent, as it should be. And yes, it brings me to my knees… for hours.

  • Fabulous review!! This was my favorite part.
This is the perfume of a beautiful woman, surely with a past. If ever a perfume was a conversation Jasmine et Cigarette speaks to me until the bar closes after her last set.
I live in the U.S. And Jasmin et Cigarette is my favorite ELdO.
Thank you for the draw, I would like to win the 100 ml bottle.

  • What an evocative review, I loved this part:
“I fumbled through the silverware as I grabbed the spoon to stir my coffee, anything to keep my mind occupied, and then it hit me; that intense aroma that lifted off her skin and made its way to my nose. At first it was soft, subtle, and slightly soapy like the last cry for attention a white flower gives in the fall before it wilts and it’s beautiful smell fades away, but now it was singing to me in a rather melodic tone but with a deep and dark underlying story to it like the lyrics to Charlotte Gainsbourgs’s Heaven Can Wait. I thought to myself, “Yes, heaven can wait and hell is too far to go- so for the time being I will allow her to be my purgatory.”

I am in the U.S. My favorite Eldo is Like this, and I would love to win Jasmine et cigarette

  • Gosh this stirred up some very personal memories for me…. this could have been written about me (except i’m not french) …. especially when the prose says “For the first time in my life my macho bravado had completely faded away, my aura grey, my persona cloaked in cautious curiosity—I knew I was being led astray” – i did, l led him astray people! 🙂
Anyhow its a beautiful piece of prose Nosey Artist and so i HAVE to have 100mls of Jasmin et Cigarette!!
I’m in the UK and don’t have a favourite Etat Libre D’Orange Perfume simply because i have not had the chance to try any of them. Here’s hoping! x

  • I love the Charlotte Gainsbourg photos, thank you. Enjoyed the opening descriptive paragraph. I find this fragrance entirely unisex though.

    Perfume Prose:

“But a smell shivered him awake.

It was a scent as old as the world. It was a hundred aromas of a thousand places. It was the tang of pine needles. It was the musk of sex. It was the muscular rot of mushrooms. It was the spice of oak. Meaty and redolent of soil and bark and herb. It was bats and husks and burrows and moss. It was solid and alive – so alive! And it was close.

The vapors invaded Nicholas’ nostrils and his hair rose to their roots. His eyes were as heavy as manhole covers, but he opened them. Through the dying calm inside him snaked a tremble of fear.

The trees themselves seemed tense, waiting. The moonlight was a hard shell, sharp and ready to ready be struck and to ring like steel.

    A shadow moved.

It poured like oil from between the tall trees and flowed across dark sandy dirt, lengthening into the middle of the ring. Trees seem to bend toward it, spellbound. A long, long shadow…”

    – Stephen M. Irwin, The Death Path

I like many ELdO, but I think my favorite is Tom of Finland.
I Woulld choose the 100ml bottle if I am picked. US

  • Jasmine et Cigarette has been on my radar for a while now, but keeps getting pushed back. “I was no longer surrounded by my corporate comfort and no amount of capital could provide me security. I was being strung along by a French jezebel”………This post has brought my interest in this perfume right to the front! The Nosey Artist certainly has a wonderful way with words. I do not have a favorite Eldo. I have only tried one and it did not work for me. I would love the 100ml of Jasmin et Cigarette. I could imagine having a few cigarettes myself while wearing it. 🙂 USA.

  • Lovely review! The description of this one sounds fantastic. I would love to try the combo of tobacco and apricot.
My favorite quote is: “Yes, heaven can wait and hell is too far to go- so for the time being I will allow her to be my purgatory.”

I haven’t tried anything from ELdO. My choice will be a discovery kit.
    Thank you. US

  • Thank you for the review. This perfume brand intrigues me. It sounds like a very interesting scent. I love Charlotte Gainsbourgh for her singing and acting. I’m very interested in the fact that the perfume changes with the season—that different elements come out depending on the time of year. I love the reviewer’s description of the dry down. Thank you to Etienne de Swardt for the generous draw offer.

  • Great review and Charlotte Gainsborough’s images are perfection! I have a girl-crush on her, I must admit (or must I?) Perfume “This scent was inconceivable, indescribable, could not be categorized in any way – it really ought not to exist at all. And yet there it was as plain and splendid as day.” from Perfume – Story or a Murderer, and could be used for many of ELDO’s fragrances.

This is my favorite of this line, and as such, I’d love to win it! Thank you & cheers. In the US.

  • I loved that this review paid attention to the changing seasons and how brings out different notes in the scent. My favourite line from the prose is “I fumbled through the silverware as I grabbed the spoon to stir my coffee, anything to keep my mind occupied…” Such an evocative image.

I live in Canada, I would like to win Jasmine et Cigarette. I haven’t tried anything by ELDo yet so hopefully this is my first 🙂

  • I will join the girl crush set on this one- I loved the nuances, French, smokey bar, sure to be fleeting glances but not….mystery in the smoke- oh what an era…well written, loved it! so its not a surprise I loved this from the prose ” The musky aroma of jasmine was uplifting and erotic all at the same time, and the sweet vanilla note paired with her natural smell ” I’d love to win Jasmine et Cigarette, I live in Aotearoa (NZ) and sadly I have not tried anything by ELDO ..yet!

  • Mrs. MacDonald says:

Wow, this was really great. My favourite quip “She smiled out of the corner of her mouth, lshe was letting me know that her seductive powers were going to wear me down” In this lifetime I have never been that woman. My life has always been full of responsibility and ten pm bedtimes, so perhaps this perfume might give me enough of an edgy push to grab some life by the balls while i still can? One can dream. I would love to win the Jasmine et Cigarette, especially given that all of my scents are fairly safe and cosy, and haven’t had the chance to try any ELDO scents. Thanks for the chance, I live in Canada.

  • Jennifer Witt says:

    This scent sounds wonderful.
My favorite quote is: I knew I was in trouble but I was in no rush to save my self.
I’ve never tried any ELDO. My choice will be the discovery kit. I live in the US
    Thank you.

  • “The perfume of a beautiful woman, surely with a past” is a perfect description. The notes sound good to me. My favorite part from the prose is: At first it was soft, subtle, and slightly soapy like the last cry for attention a white flower gives in the fall before it wilts and it’s beautiful smell fades away, but now it was singing to me in a rather melodic tone but with a deep and dark underlying story to it like the lyrics to Charlotte Gainsbourgs’s Heaven Can Wait…

I am in the U.S, and my favorite ELDO fragrance is Fils de Dieu. Would love to win a discovery kit if I am lucky. Thanks for the drawi!

  • Very nice interpretation taking us through the author’s personal experience of Jasmin et Cigaratte. I have tried this perfume and it is quite accurate. I would like to have the Discovery Set. Rien is an ELDO I like quite well. U.S.A. 🙂

  • Jasmine et Cigarette was my introduction to ELdO. Funnily, although I loved it, I went on to add Tom of Finland, La Fin du Monde, Rien, and Like This onto my collection and JeC has yet to make it in.

I can relate to the Nosey Artist’s description of the “woman” that is attached to Jasmine and Cigarette’s mystique. It has to be a romantic portrayal for cigarette smell to not be off-putting. 🙂

I would love to win Jasmine et Cigarette. Regardless, it’ll be the next ELdO I will add to my collection.

Thanks for the drawing. I am in the US

  • Writing about food and music and perfume seems to inspire the last great sensualist writers.

“I was no longer surrounded by my corporate comfort and no amount of capital could provide me security.” —would that the many could benefit from such a transformation.

I’m torn between Antiheroes and Fat Electrician. Only a Discovery Set will make my decision more agonizing and complete.

  • fazalcheema says:

I agree with the Nosey Artist that one of the best things about ELDO is that they are not afraid to walk the line between unwearable and unique. I wish their risk taking approach is adopted by more brands. One of the perfume proses i like is,

“You may break, you may shatter the vase if you will,
But the scent of the roses will hang around it still”

my favorite ELDO creation is indeed Jasmin et Cigarette, thus, it will be my choice for this draw, too. I am in the US

  • pursejunkie says:

I like the poetry in the prose:
    “my macho bravado had…faded away,
    my aura grey…
I knew I was being led astray.”

My favorite ELDO, and one of my favorite perfumes of all time is Fat Electrician.

I would love to win the discovery kit so that I can find more greate ELDO fragrances to love.

    I’m in the US.

  • Fantastic review! Love the description and the new fragrance sounds awesome, I’m a tobacco lover.

    My favorite quote is:
“Yes, heaven can wait and hell is too far to go- so for the time being I will allow her to be my purgatory.”

I favorite from ELdO is Fat Electrician.
I would like to win the 100ml bottle of Jasmine et cigarette.
I’m in Malaysia. Thank you for the draw.

  • Such seductive pictures! I am not a smoker, but this perfume sounds wonderfully appealing. My favorite ELdO is Like This, and I would like to win the 100 mL bottle of Jasmin et cigarette. I am in the US.

  • “Both gamine and femme-fatale”
    What a lovely description!
I have tried a few ELdO, and Jasmin et Cigarette is my favorite.
If I win, I would love to have a bottle to play with.
I am in the U.S. and thanks for the story and the drawing.

  • ‘The musky aroma of jasmine was uplifting and erotic all at the same time’
    So true!
My favorite from ELdO is just ‘Jasmine et Cigarette’ so if I win I should like to receive the 100 ml bottle of this fabulous scent.
    I’m in Italy!

  • This is a wonderful review. My favorite part of the article is this: „There is something very French about this perfume, she actually talks to me, in a husky voice, in a language I don’t understand, but her meaning is clear. If ever a perfume was a conversation Jasmine et Cigarette speaks to me until the bar closes after her last set. „
And my favorite quote from perfume prose: „I was no longer surrounded by my corporate comfort and no amount of capital could provide me security. I was being strung along by a French jezebel who was both gamine and femme-fatale. From her bohemian chic style to her dark plum colored lip stick . She smiled out of the corner of her mouth, lshe was letting me know that her seductive powers were going to wear me down.”
I have never tried any of Etat Libre D’Orange Perfume. If I would be as lucky to win, my choice is 100ml of Jasmin et Cigarette. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

As I used to smoke many years Gauloise i love this part: “I could tell she was staring into my soul through the silhouette of her cigarette smoke as she exhaled the last drag of her Gauloise, unfortunately she failed to tell me what she saw but judging by what I felt at the moment I had a pretty good idea… ” My favourite scent from Etat Libre d’Orange until now is Eau de Protection. I live in the EU, Austria.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Already have this scent, so I don’t need to enter the draw, but I just wanted to comment how much I loved this review! It really does strike this balance of unisex…kind of like a hologram, depending how you look at it to me it can feel like a masculine feminine scent some days or a softer, “feminine” masculine. Love how it captures the smell of an unlit cigarette, but combines it with the jasmine, tonka, apricot to make it read well as a gorgeous fragrance!

  • Nice writing, the atmosphere is made palpable. Something about the intense aroma lifted off her skin and made it’s way to my nose appeals to me…..fragrance mingled with the individual scent of skin taking on a life of it’s own as it combines with the smoke. Nice. I can’t believe that in my years of sampling I have never smelled this so I would like to go all out and win the bottle. My favorite of the line that I have tried is Afternoon of a Faun. Thanks to all, for the evocative writing and generous opportunity, I’m in the US.

  • I liked this part very much “She smiled out of the corner of her mouth, she was letting me know that her seductive powers were going to wear me down.” Reading the review and seeing the pictures of Charlotte Gainsbourg really amplified everything! She is perfect for the image created with the little prose!
I have yet to try Jasmin et Cigarette, but my favourite from ELDO is Bendelirious.
I would like to win Jasmin et Cigarette. I am from EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love the image of Jasmin et Cigarette as a beautiful woman who gets away with smoking in a smoke-free zone because no one wants to disturb her. My two favorite ELDOs are Putain des Palaces and Fils de Dieu. I’m in the US and would choose the bottle of Jasmin et Cigarette. Thanks!

  • I enjoyed the fact that there is a fragrance that seems to play to the seasons and also shows different sides on a woman vs a man. I think it would be nice to have a fragrance that takes you from one season to a next. It seems that so often, fragrances are geared more specifically for warm or cool weather, but not necessarily both. I’m registered, in the US and would choose the Jasmin et Cigarette. Many thanks.

  • This was a very evocative review, the photos are perfect!! My favorite quote from perfume prose was: ” I could tell she was staring into my soul through the silhouette of her cigarette smoke as she exhaled the last drag of her Gauloise, unfortunately she failed to tell me what she  saw but judging by what I felt at the moment I had a pretty good idea…”

Unfortunately, I have not tried anything from this line, so I would love to win the discovery kit.

I live in Europe. Thank you very much!

  • Great review , good mixing between ELDO and Jasmin and cigarettes.

My favorite quote is: “I was no longer surrounded by my corporate comfort and no amount of capital could provide me security.

I live in the EU And LIKE THIS is my favorite ELdO.
Thank you for the draw, I would like to win the 100 ml bottle.

  • Mon Dieu, what I loved most about Nosey Artist’s review is that it has made me want to ask my husband to come home early from work! :o)

The Artist paints a most seductive picture, and the Art Director completes it! Their “seductive ways have definitely worn me down”!

My favorite scent(s) from ELdO is (are) Noel au Balcon and Jasmine et Cigarette, (so I’d be thrilled to win this botle!) …..but I bet the best scent from this house is M. de Swardt himself!

  • Great review! I love the composition of this one. Jasmine has always been one of my favorite florals, and I’m interested in how it blends with the other notes. I really like the line “I fumbled through the silverware as I grabbed the spoon to stir my coffee, anything to keep my mind occupied…”. Such a great line that is. My favorite fragrance from the house is Rien and I’d love to win the sampler! Thanks and I’m in Canada.

  • I’ve wanted to try this scent for a long time and The Nosey Artist’s review just cements that longing. Another really creative, mixed-form review! I love the opening imagery of the woman in the bar, but in the story itself I like the ending best: ‘I lifted my coffee to my lips and took a sip as I peered over to her from the edge of the cup. I knew I was in trouble but I was in no rush to save my self; I was buckled in for the ride no matter where she decided to take me…’

The pictures of Charlotte Gainsbourg are a perfect pairing – and it reminds that she was in a film in which the male protagonist was a perfumer. Does anyone remember the film?

There are lots of ELdO scents I’d love to try (particularly Jasmin et Cigarette, Like This and Rien) so the sampler is so tempting, but I think I’d have to go for the full bottle if chosen – I already know I’m going to love it! I’m in the US – thanks for the draw!

  • I loved the image of the woman in the bar oblivious to the no smoking sign, and it will not occur to anyone to stop her!
My favourite ELDO scent is Eau de Protection, but I also love Jasmin et Cigarette and would be thrilled to win a bottle!
“I recall the scent of some toilet paper-I believe she stole it from her mother’s maid=a sweetish, lowly, musky perfume. It mingled with her own biscuity odor, and my senses were suddenly filled to the brim”-Nabokov,Lolita
I live in Spain, thanks for this wonderful draw!!

  • The short story feels like the beginning of an erotic novel! Porn for perfume lovers I guess! When I smelled Jasmin et Cigarette for the first time, I had a similar reaction to when I first smelled Guerlain’s Nahema. They don’t smell alike at all, but the image it evoked for me was of a similar woman: French, confident, tousled hair, legs for days, seductive.

  • “I knew I was in trouble but I was in no rush to save my self” is the key sentence of this beautiful review. I love and imagine the idea of femininity through the combination of tobacco and jasmine. I know the fragrance and love it a lot. It is among my favorite ELdO fragrances together with Fils de Dieu du riz et des agrumes and Tom of Finland.
It is the reflection of a woman with a past, indeed. Brilliant story! I’d love to win Jasmin et Cigarette. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • Welcome back The Nosey Artist . “I could tell she was staring into my soul through the silhouette of her cigarette smoke as she exhaled the last drag of her Gauloise”, OH MY!!! I remember smelling Jsmin et Cigarette some time ago. NOW I HAVE TO HAVE IT!!! What a unique way of writing about fragrance. I love it. I would love to win USA reader (swoon)

  • carole macleod says:

It’s the images that make me weak at the knees-CG is such a beauty. She is a person whose face I can look at for hours.
The name of the scent is so evocative for me-I think because my grandmother, a very glamourous person, would wear French perfumes with jasmine notes. She was a smoker, too. I just love the combination of these two scents.
I live in Canada, and I would choose Jasmine et Cigarette, if I were lucky enough to win.
BTW-how do I tell if I am registered or not? I did register, a long time ago-am I automatically logged in with each visit?
    Best regards,
    Carole

  • I liked the description of how the nuances of the perfume changed with the temperature and on different skins, and particularly appreciated the line “—I knew I was being led astray.” I recently got the ELdO sample set from Sephora, and my favorite if the three I’ve tried so far is Like This. I’m in the US, and I’d choose the bottle of Jasmin et Cigarette.

  • Finally a perfume review that puts some emphasis on form and doesn’t concentrate on juice and notes alone. It was a pleasure reading this short story with a pulp flare. Hope to see more soon.

My favorite Eldo fume is (surprise surprise) Rien… no points for novelty for me. I live in EU and I’d choose Jasmin et cigarette as my prize.

  • Lurve Jasmin et Cigarette (and so far my favourite ELdO). I have been eking out a decant. Each time I wear it, I wonder why I don’t wear it more. So now it will be the scent of tomorrow, and maybe even the next day. I’ve never noticed the apricot, maybe tomorrow.

The review had all the things I love, a personal view of a perfume, a personal view of the world, great visuals and a note list (every perfume review needs to talk about what’s actually in there, or at least what the perfumers were playing with it smelling like, given the vast list of aromachemicals at their disposal. Is my cynicism showing?).

I particularly liked this quote ‘no longer surrounded by my corporate comfort’, everything is encapsulated in that phrase.

The bottle, please, should I be so lucky, and I’m in Australia.

  • Great review! This tableau really pegs the intention of the perfume, “I imagine her at a bar, oblivious to the No Smoking sign and no one cares or dares to tell her to stub out the cigarette that fills the room and mixes on her skin with soft florals and the smell of smoke.” Of course she is smoking Gauloise, no other cigarette would do for a French seductress! This perfectly sums up that irresistible attraction we all have for things that we know we shouldn’t want, but desperately do, “I knew I was in trouble but I was in no rush to save my self…”

  • Wonderful review on this one. I’m not much of a fan of jasmine, but this fragrance does sound very well made and I love the bottle. This was a quote I enjoyed, “Yes, heaven can wait and hell is too far to go- so for the time being I will allow her to be my purgatory.” I haven’t smelled anything from this house yet unfortunately, for that reason, I will choose the discovery set. Canada

  • Great idea of combining jasmine and that smoky vibe! I love the way it sounds. “She smiled out of the corner of her mouth, lshe was letting me know that her seductive powers were going to wear me down” is a line I liked. My favorite from the house is Like This.

My choice will be the discovery.

I’m international (Toronto) and thanks for the draw!

  • This is a wonderful review! Nosey has a way with words, the images he depicts go with the art fabulously. I like the way he relates to the scent as a character, one who ” actually talks to me, in a husky voice, in a language I don’t understand, but her meaning is clear. If ever a perfume was a conversation Jasmine et Cigarette speaks to me until the bar closes after her last set.”

As a general quote, I loved: “Yes, heaven can wait and hell is too far to go- so for the time being I will allow her to be my purgatory.”

My favorite from the house is Fils de Dieu, but I like a lot of them. Including Secretions Magnifiques, which I still remember smelling for the first time and which pushed the limits of my understanding of fragrance.

I’d love to try all of them, so would choose the discovery set. USA
    thank you
