Niche Fragrance Review: S Poncet Pleasant Promenade + Favorite Perfume Shop 10 Winner Draw

Sabine Poncet Hernandez

I encountered Sabine Poncet Hernandez’s first perfume for her S Poncet lineEau Eternelle in 2011, and it struck me how simply beautiful it was. It was a perfect summer perfume that would make you feel elegant and light; it was rounded and made with such ease, that it seemed like something out of a history of fragrances, not a first release from a new brand.

In Denmark there are hardly any niche brands and in malls you’re lucky to find a few non mainstreams of interest. So imagine my surprise to stumble upon a wonderful little shop called Essence and Groom just opposite one of the most beautiful places in Copenhagen, the renaissance palace Rosenborg and the adjourning garden. The shop had a beautiful window display and in it, a bottle of S Poncet’s Eau Eternelle ( I had won a sample on CaFleureBon). I stopped in my tracks and went straight in to discover two very dedicated, young shop owners starting up a perfume shop. And, as you will imagine, one of their brands was S Poncet. I was very surprised to find that there had been a new release from this brand. The new perfume was called Pleasant Promenade.

Pleasant Promenade Water Color

Pleasant Promenade by Claudie Poncet (Sabine's Mother)

Let me start of by saying that Pleasant Promenade is every bit as beautiful as  Eau Eternelle. This particular Promenade indeed opens pleasantly with a sense of moist leaves and a touch of cloves and berries to bring a ray of sunshine to the composition. It draws you in with an instant feel of the sun warming the damp earth on a day of clear blue skies and chill in the air. Throughout the development of the fragrance you sense a dewiness and moist humus, but although it seems a true image, it’s never photorealistic, but rather a perfume-poetic version of a forest. The fragrance softens somewhat towards a warmer and a bit dryer heart, where you’ll find a very well behaved and cosy patchouli, enwrapped in violet leaf and galbanum, which, slowly as the autumnal tree sheds it’s leaves, falls into a bed of woods and soft calming notes- always, ever so carefully balancing the sweet of musky honey and sandalwood against the mossy greens.

Sabine Poncet wanted this new perfume to capture the woods of the Loire valley in fall. And it’s true; the first thing that springs to mind is that walk in the autumn forest or perhaps a walk through the still cold and snow-covered parks, still dressed for winter, but sensing, by the light and the sweet waft of moist earth that spring is on its way. The cold is the perfect excuse to snuggle up to each other, and in the embrace smell the delicate softness of spice and petals and a warm and earthy drydown of S Poncet perfume Pleasant Promenade. In an email exchange with Editor in Chief Michelyn Camen,  Sabine said "When I saw my mother's water color, it immediately reminded me of the promenades in the beautiful oak tree forest we took as a family. Her artwork shows the forest at the end of the Fall, and that season is full of olfactory memories: the wet earth, the fragrance of the pears in the neigborhood, the last roses before winter starts, the moss on the trees, the falling leaves. I tried to gather all these notes to share my wonderful promenades, some very precious moments that I will always cherish".

Now, I have never been to the Loire Vally in fall, but if I ever go, I’ll be wearing Pleasant Promenade there.

The sample for this review was kindly given to me by the owners of Essence and Groom in Copenhagen.

Thanks to S. Poncet we have a draw of 10 Samples for ten winners. To be eligible leave a comment on your favourite small perfume shop (brick and mortar) you’ve discovered. The draw will end on March 19, 2013.

We announce the winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so Like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilled perfume.

  • My favourite little perfume shop is the Fragrance Shop New York in the East Village. She’ll custom blend things for you!! Thanks. 🙂

  • Well, it’s actually Lucky Scent, but that doesn’t sound original. But my local Assistance League is where I’ve scored some neat vintage perfumes.

  • To be more clear, I don’t think they sell niche fragrances though! Mostly just custom hand-made oil blends. For niche frags, I’d have to say my favourite small perfume shop would be The Posh Peasant, and they have really amazing customer service. 🙂

  • Sadly we don’t have anything like that around here, people just seem to buy mainstream perfumes at the mall. I recall a lovely little perfume shop in New York from years ago but can’t recall the name!

  • Janet in California says:

There used to be a wonderful perfume shop in Los Gatos, CA. Many wonderful brands. It closed a few years ago.

  • My favorite perfume shop is Strange Invisible Perfumes in Venice, CA. They only have their own line of fragrances, but they have a lot of other great organic, natural beauty and bath stuffs such as Nahla skin are, Rahua hair care, and Saipua soaps– all of which are amazing!

  • My favourite little perfume boutiques in Melbourne, Australia are Peony Melbourne and Christine’s Accessories in Flinders Lane.
They are my go-to for niche brands, and the only Australian stockists of female Creed.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

  • Since I live in Los Angeles my favorite is Scent Bar. Is where I can try and have a nice chat with all the people who work there. Absolute favorite.

which I visited during my college reunion
there are many small niche brands there

  • I have found another stockist of Creed in Australia…my favourite niche perfumery in Perth, called Mariposa. Also stock L’Artisan, Amouage, JHAG, and others. The girls let me spray with abandon and hold perfumery information evenings. Fun!

  • the “house of perfumes” in Tel Aviv- the only one in Israel that sells some ( very few) niche fragrances

  • I adore a small perfume boutique in the Old Town district in Poznań. It belongs to Missala family and later I discovered that they have few more boutiques around Poland but the one in Poznań is the smallest one.

  • I discovered a small amazing boutique in Paris: Marie Antoinette, in a beautiful place in Le Marais. There you can find among others, Oriza Legrand parfums (Relique d’amour is a beautiful one)

  • Unfortunately I live in a rural town so the closest brick and mortar is a Sephora which is still a 45 minute car ride away (and I know it doesn’t exactly count as a perfume boutique 🙂 !!).
    Lovely review, Jasia!

  • This sounds really lovely.
My favorite little shop is Aedes de Venustas on Christopher Street in NY. It was the first niche shop I went to and I fell in love with perfume there.

  • My favorite little perfume shop is Linda vuela a Río, in Murcia (Spain), where I have had the chance to try lots of niche perfumes.

  • There aren’t any perfume shops around me. It’s either the mall or Sephora if I want to sniff something in person. I’m jealous of all you folks who have actual perfume stores to go to.

  • There is nothing near me, but when we visit family in Portland, Oregon, I love visiting The Perfume House on Hawthorne Boulevard. They have a marvelous selection!

  • Eau Eternelle was indeed lovely, I remember writing a glowing review when it came out. I’m very happy that these perfumes are introduced with such care and one at a time. I hope they do very well!

  • Well small prfume shops are not a common thing in Greece as only department stores carried perfumes and not niche ones. But recently a couple have emerged there is a small very lovely one in Thessaloniki that I go to every time I visit my parents there. Thank you for the draw!!!

  • My favorite perfume shops are MiN New York and Penny Lane Perfumes in Delaware! Thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • Everything sounds so cosy and enlightening, that I cannot miss the opportunity to comment! Thank you for the draw!
My favourite perfume shop is in my home-town here, in Bulgaria. Even though it’s not made of brick and mortar, it is tiny and secluded and one of the very few places in Bulgaria where you can find Ogranza Indecence Givenchy, Nu – YSL and the old Venezia by Laura Biaggiotti.

  • When I visited London last fall I made a trip to the perfume store tucked away in Harrods. It was a pretty amazing place! I am the owner of a bottle of Eau Eternelle, and if this is anything as lovely I need to try it.

  • My favorite perfume shop is Aedes De Venustas in the West Village, NYC. It’s so lush, it is the perfect host for the special selection of fragrances they carry.

  • I like Eden which is in Portland, its a vintage shop, that carries a few perfume labels, like slumberhouse and Imaginary Authors, Tocca and Annick Goutal among others!

  • S Poncet sounds like a very interesting small company I need to check out soon. My favorite perfume shop (although not really little or humble) would be Santa Maria Novella’s shop in Florence. More like a temple, worth visiting for the experience alone even if you do not intent to buy anything

  • There’s a small shop in Barcelona called “The Cosmeticoh!” that carries some amazing stuff like Mona di Orio, Montale, Biehl, Carner Barcelona, Parfum d’Empire, Odin NY, Nez a Nez, ELd’O…most of them are only in this shop, and they’re extremely friendly! Really lovely place.
    Thank you for the draw!

  • I absolutely lovely MiN NY — a great Soho location, lovely woody interior, exquisitely chosen selection and terrific service. Wish we had a decent perfumery in DC…

  • I like the shop in Harvard Square in Boston, Colonial Drug, they had testers for sniffing for reference (classics) and also for trying out. So much in there!

  • My favorite shop is in Florence – it’s well known Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. I always feel like home coming there. Thank you for the draw.
