Elise Pearlstine of Tambela (also Sr Contributor at ÇaFleureBon with her educational and in-depth Notes in Perfumery) has released a long awaited new perfume named Aerheart.  While sitting down to compose a scent based on dragon skin, a different kind of fire took over, and the inspiration of Amelia Earhart took flight. The soft, dry leather perfume speaks of cracked passport cases and moleskin journals kept in waiting for the next person to discover its historical mysteries.

Amelia Earhart solo flight

Amelia Earhart poses in front of the plane in which she completed her solo flight across the Atlantic, May 21, 1932, Derry, Ireland.

Aerheart opens the way a South African morning might, with geranium, jasmines and tuberose heavy with humidity already burning off as the hot ground pushes aromatic earth in to the air.  Cassie keeps both an antiquated floral and requisite spice the center of the story, as well as providing a soft brushed leather facet- a current incarnation of a woman whose zest for life is reflected in her occupation as well as her perfume.

Courage is the price life exacts for granting peace,” said the brave Amelia Earhart, and it is both bold in composition and soothing upon perception this accord Elise has woven with hyraceum, oud and cardamom.  Hyraceum is the fossilized waste of the Hyrax (a small, rodent looking mammal) which can be thousands of years old.  Collection of the material is cruelty-free and used in similar capacities to civet or musk.  Elise tinctures the material herself, softly eliciting the literal scent of Africa (it is also called African Stone, and provides much to the perfume of the continent.)  Often describing the beauty of the journey as much worth the travel as fame or fortune, Amelia Earhart  could be speaking to the vast, desolate beauty of the base accord in Aerheart.  We are given access to an overview of the arid and animal, all from a distance which gives full perspective of the ingredients without ever letting one move outside its natural habitat or overwhelm the wearer. As plots of land seem well ordered, a patterned quilt of ground from the air– Aerheart is a flight across seas of sand if for no other reason than to bask in its warm sensual experience.

New video of Amelia Earhart before her last flight finally sees the light of day | Mashable

Rare footage of Amelia Earhart filmed at Burbank Airport was discovered yesterday June 9, 2015. *It is believed to be the last recording before she and Frederick Noonan were reported missing near Howland Island in The Pacific July 2,1937 (via mashable)

With any journey there is the spark and flame of the unexpected, which flare up like momentary smoke from an engine from black pepper, rosemary and the ever surprising mate, which is well suited to bridge and brighten our nomadic journey.  As a well traveled sojourner herself, Elise offers us a leather aroma, born of adventures past and giving permission to adventures future, all wrapped in a soft suede aromatic similar to medicine bag for the high flying spirit within us all.

Notes: Black Pepper, Rosemary, Geranium, Cassie Absolute, Jasmines, Tuberose, Hyraceum, Oud, Styrax, Cardamom Absolute, Mate, Labdanum

“The soft, dry leather perfume speaks of cracked passport cases and moleskin journals kept in waiting for the next person to discover its historical mysteries.” This appeals to me so much! I’ve been wearing vintage scents along a related impulse, to smell and to explore history in one act. I don’t know much about Amelia Earhart, but I already admire her adventurousness. I’m a registered US reader. Thanks so much for the review and the draw. Great to have you back, Einsof!

  • I think the combination of white florals with leather sounds really interesting. Leathers seem to turn quite medicinal and bandagey on me, but some stronger white florals may be enough to keep it in check! I admire Amelia Earharts courage – I don’t trust planes now and they’ve been around for quite some time 🙂

  • This sounds like an exciting layering of aromas! I love that it started out as dragon skin. And it sounds delicious in a leathery way. I love that it is a natural also. Amelia Aerhart is an inspiration. It sounds trite. But she inspires adventure and possibility.
    Great review!

  • I admire her courage and boldness and sense of adventure! I love the sound of a leather perfume inspired by her travels. I am in the US, thank you!

  • Eionsof, great review and once again great to see you back. I love hearing the back stories of perfumes and the triggers that take over during the creative process. Elise is a dear friend and someone I admire dearly. There are many things that appeal to me with this fragrance, the one statement that truly drew me in was born of adventures past and giving permission to adventures future. Fabulous video by the way and I look forward to the E-book. Amelia was invaluable with her writings that paved the way for the Ninety-Nines of which she was apart of their formation.

  • What a great name for this perfume. I am intrigued by “a leather aroma, born of adventures past and giving permission to adventures future”. Wonderful. Amelia Earhart lived her life on her terms during a time when that was simply not done. She was a gutsy lady in more ways than one. USA

I am intrigued by Aerheart because it reflects both aspects of Amelia’s personality..florals elements pointing to her feminine appeal and leathery elements reminding us how bad-ass Amelia was..I admire Amelia, because she achieved in aviation sector which even most men could not dare to dream of….there is a reason she is as fascinating today as she had ever been..thanks for the draw. i am in the US

I’d love to try Aerhart. I had n idea about hyraceum prior to this article, and I love learning something new. But if I am honest, it’s the cardamom that’s got me hoping to sample this fragrance.

Even though I have always thought of Amelia Earhart when I think of Vol de Nuit, it is about time that she is singled out as the inspiration for a fragrance. I admire her bravery, and her willingness to insist that women could fly aircraft as well as (if not better than) men.

  • Amelia looks beautiful. Must be a very strong woman to have been a pilot in those days, and I envy the freedom she must have felt while flying over the world.
I would like to try the perfume to experience the whole story you described. from the fresh opening and to the leathery base.

I don’t live in the US, but my sister does. and she will recieve it in my name should I be so lucky as to win

  • I find the name for this perfume very original Earhart is like a Dear Heart, and Airhart like Air Heart, which defines the spirit of Amelia Earhart. Longtime ago my dad bought me a book about her life, and I loved reading about her spirit of adventure, her strength and untamed heart. I have always been attracted by those times Amelia lived, but especially the planes, the courage of the pilots and how they tried to to things that nobody had tried before. I think this spirit is very well expressed in the scent of this perfume. And the fact that its creator tinctures the Hyraceum herself, and not having heard of it before, makes it like a real journey into the world of perfumes, as the same spirit of Earhart´s journey into the flying adventure.

I live these days in the US, so I felt very fortunate to be able to enter this draw. My admiration for Amelia Earhart has taken me to Africa and especially Egypt and somehow by reading that book, my heart has also loved the planes, flying and the adventure. Good Luck everyone.

  • Thank you Einsof for nailing it and Michelyn for the wonderful photos and amazing video – what a find! This one took me on a lovely journey and Aerheart ended up just where it was intended.

  • This perfume newbie has just learned something new: hyraceum! I would love to experience this perfume; the mix of leather notes with cardamom is really intriguing, and its connection with a daring woman in flight really catches my attention. Thanks for the chance — I live in the U.S.

  • I love leather scents and have always admired Aerheart’s courage in following her dreams! I’m in the US.

  • It’s admirable enough to me she got into that plane to cross the Atlantic without a proper bathroom. 🙂 It’s been said, still it is a great perfume name. I love pepper scents. USA

  • I would love to try this. I have long been a fan and admirer of Amelia, what courage and bravery. I love the adaption of the name as well, it all sounds delightful. Registered reader in the US. Thank you for the generous draw.

  • Elizabeth T says:

This sounds like it perfectly captures Aerheart’s last flight, both courageous and tragic. I love a soft leather scent, and most of all love American perfumery, how our perfumers have such freedom with materials. I would love to try this tribute to one of America’s tragic heroes.

  • I have recently been wearing Elise’s Carmen Dances and love it. The black pepper note in Aerheart appeals to me. One thing I admire about Amelia Earhart is that she helped to finance a date fruit farm in Arizona for her former California mechanic who had contracted tuberculosis.

  • JazzBelle says:

Amelia Earhart’s zest for life, her bravery, her sense of adventure, and the ultimate mysteries of her fate seem to be perfectly captured in Aerheart. Mate is a note I have yet to experience in a fragrance. Oud provides the perfume with an air of mystery. This sounds like a fascinating fragrance!

I am in the U.S. and have liked the CafFleureBon Facebook page!

  • There are so many interesting facets to Aerheart, but I think the jasmines and tuberose appeal to me the most. The lift off of the scent, so to speak. Amelia Earhart’s formidable bravery is what I most admire! I’m in the US.
