New Perfume Review: PERFUMEKEV A Bunch of Flowers 1912 & Rose 1902 Parfum by Kevin Verspoor + Preview Limited Edition Launch Draw

Kevin-Verspoor

Three preview fragrances recently arrived from FIFI award winning Perfumer and CaFleureBon Contributor Kevin Verspoor who is launching his new line,PERFUMEKEV today. These fragrances not only adorn the skin, and astonish with their complexity, texture, and technique, but also remind me that vintage and modern fragrances are timepieces that reflect the politics, art, music, landscape, and culture of any particular moment in time.

Over the past few weeks, Kevin generously shared his creative process, as we touched upon the profound structure of vintage classics, stories about nitro musks and Schiff’s base, and building a fragrance from the bottom-up, a technique he learned from his mentors perfumers Sophia Grosjman and Jean Claude Delville. Kevin spins names of raw materials with speed and ease, and as I listen to him talk I can imagine him creating mod after mod. You need only to read his legends in perfumery articles here on ÇaFleureBon  to appreciate his extensive knowledge about all things fragrant-from historical to the technical, not to mention his impressive collection of contemporary and vintage fragrances at 3000 bottles and counting.

PERFUMEKEV will be offering two types of fragrances in his collection. The first will be reconstructions of classic fragrances inspired by techniques used in the late 19th century to the first three decades of the 20th century. These reconstructions will be made so that these techniques can be experienced today, and created in limited runs only. The second type will be modern fragrances, composed with wonderful new natural and synthetic materials that are currently available to perfumers. However many of them are not being used because of price, rarity or perfumers just not accustomed to using them yet.

Verspoor’s mastery of the technical allows for a freedom to flow through his fragrances. A Bunch of Flowers 1912 embodies a gentle quality without being timid. At first it hits me as an almost spicy and heady floral then it begins to surprise and show its many faces. At times a restrained sweetness meets powdery warmth with a breathtaking violet accord. In another moment I smell heliotrope; other times the rose and jasmine are more pronounced. It keeps changing and evolving as I wear it. Kevin added, “A Bunch of Flowers is best described as a multi-faceted floral, meaning that there is a bouquet of flowers that one can see all at once and some of them appear as the fragrance dries down. In the top you catch touches of orange blossom, followed by a beautiful jasmine note then a large lilac, and a lily of the valley accord that is supported by roses, violets and when it dries down there is a touch of narcissus and vanilla orchid. This all rests upon a tripod or back bone of sandalwood, vetiver, and musk.” I must say it is one of the most striking and deliberate dry downs I have ever experienced.

Rose 1902 Parfum has a strong sophisticated voice. It wants to be heard, as if it is the honorary spokesperson for all the rose perfumes that came before it. It is a stylized rose perfume whose fragrant lines are buoyant and curvy, reminiscent of Art Nouveau albeit captured in a bottle. At first it comes out with a striking fullness, and then the rose begins its sinuous journey.  The rose is lush, textured and weighted by its complexity. The fragrance has high concentrations of Rose and Jasmine Co2 extracts, along with many varietals of rose and jasmine as well. Kevin explained that Co2 extracts when compared to the old absolutes are much more true to nature; to my nose the Co2s add clarity to the fragrance. Rose 1902 Parfum is inspired by Coty's La Rose Jacqueminot, a perfume that launched Coty's career.

Kevin believes creating fragrances is not any different from composing music, or art: complexity, work and precision lives inside the bottle. He added, “They (perfumes) mimic the living structures of the world with a good set of bones and resting upon strong foundations the best perfumes have these qualities. Just as music has a structure to it so does perfumery.” When I asked Kevin what he wants folks to walk away with after experiencing his fragrances, he said, “I want people to walk away having learned something about the amazing creativity that goes into fragrance construction and how enjoyable that can be. I feel the more people learn about fragrance and what goes into them the less fear we may have from those who have challenges with perfume.” I couldn’t agree more Kevin, thank you again. Looking forward to the launch and discovering more about PERFUMEKEV.

This just in: I received word from Kevin that he would like to include a third fragrance in the draw to celebrate his launch. It is a contemporary fragrance called EverybodydeKev, and although I haven’t experienced it yet I’m sure it smells as amazing as it sounds. Notes include: black pepper, pink pepper, Cypriol oil, lavender, jasmine, rose, clary sage, Vanilla abs / Tonka abs, balsams, resins, sandalwood Australian and Indonesian, Vetiver, Jatasmansi oil, Benzoine, Siamwood and a musk amberwood drydown.

  • Ok I am absolutely loving the Everybody by Kev. This really sounds outstanding and unlike anything I own. There is nothing in it that I don’t love. How exciting. I really like how Kevin is designing as living structures. From the ground up is the only way to go. How true is this. Perfect concept. 3000 plus fragrances are you kidding me? The ingredients in each are fascinating collaborations with his spin on them. All fragrances sound supreme. Wish you all the best and I hope I will win a 15ml of Everybody by Kev. In the USA thanks a million.

  • I would love to try the sample set. I live in the US and like the discussion of the CO2 notes.

  • Congratulations, Kevin, what a beautifully detailed and impressive launch! I am alwayear interested in the comparison of music and perfume because these are the gentle powers that enhance life like no other; both provide a soundtrack of sorts to our everyday existence, for those that notice. All three perfumes sound gorgeous, I would prefer the sample set. I’m in the US.

Congratulations, Kevin! I am very excited for you! And for us perfumistas, too! 🙂

I am leaning towards saying I’d only want Rose 1902 Parfum if I won, but of course I always prefer trying everything, and I can choose that because I’m in the US!

I can’t wait to see/smell what Kevin comes up with every month. This is quite exciting!

  • I would like to try “Everybody by Kev”…but all seem wonderful to smell!

  • ChristineB says:

All the best with the launch. They sound super perfumes. I am UK based so if I were to win the draw it would be the sample set.

  • Hello there Kevin. Congrats. Loving your creative fragrance side. All sound so lovely. It is such a beautiful art. I learn continuously on this fragrance journey I’m on and it only keeps getting better. I can find the beauty in any fragrance. I really love the sound of “Everybody by Kev”. Seems every note you have in it will just sing in harmony. I believe this will without a doubt be my choice. Thanks a million and good luck on your journey as well. Someday I would love to watch someone create a fragrance right before my eyes. To dream. In the USA.

  • The best thing about this article is that we get to see what Kevin Verspoor is up to again. 🙂 I remember the first article I read with Kevin talking about his childhood Synesthesia and how he has honed this into a super talent for fragrances. Great to see your success!

I’m interested in Everybody by Kev in 15ml the most. Sounds like a knock out. I am in the US.

  • My preference is Everybody By Kev; I live in the US. I appreciate Cafleurebon’s “reports from the trenches” as it were, and keeps its readers informed of trends and new fragrances – thank you!

  • Thank you for your generosity!
I’m international reader (Poland) so if I win a sample set is just perfect.

  • Valentine girl says:

Congratulations on the launch of the new fragrance line and thanks for the opportunity to win a chance to sample them. I am in the USA and would choose the sample set to decide on my favorite scent, although they all sound incredible. I really admire Kevin’s vision that the creation of a perfume is analogous to other art forms…including in my mind, the vintner’s art where complexity, work & precision also live on inside the bottle. Just like a great perfume has structure, so too does a great wine!
Really looking forward to experiencing his artistic vision!

  • Congratulations Kevin! With your deep knowledge of perfumes and ingredients your creations are bound to be wonderful! I’d love the sampler.

  • Thanks for this review, I will be following Kevin with interest. I like the sound of EverybodydeKev and live in Australia.

  • Congrats Kevin on the new launch of your fragrance line. Im so excited for you. I would love the 15ml bottle of Rose 1902 Parfum. It sounds absolutely gorgeous!. Im in the US.

  • Thank you for the drawing, and for the opportunity to learn about the artistry behind the new line. I’d never thought about perfume having the sort of underlying structure that music does. I’m in the US, and I’d choose the deluxe sample set.

  • Congratulations and good luck Kevin! It’s so nice to see perfumers stepping up to deliver what so many of the big companies have turned away from. I look forward to trying your line. I live in the US and if I win I would try the sample set. Thank you!

  • Congratulations Kevin! These sound wonderful! I would love to sample the three fragrances, so I choose the sample set. I am in the US. Thank you!

  • Congratulations to Kevin on the big launch. I live in the US and would love to experience the sample set. Thank you.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I would like to try the sample set. I’ve just discovered these reviews in the last few months and have really enjoyed the analyses and opinions. I’ve learned so much and I love the P’eau Sud that I won!! I live in the US.

  • What a great interview and a very interesting perfumer. The use of naturals is always a plus in my book, and the co2 extracts should be interesting in these scents! I am in the US and would love to try the sampler! And EverybodydeKev makes me very excited!

  • I have been fortunate to wear Kevin’s creations over the past decade or so and they are just incredible and so very unique. I am so very happy to see that Kevin is creating on his own which has always been the optimal plan! The world will be a better smelling place, indeed!

  • I’ve yet to be so lucky as to experience Kevin’s fragrances (to my knowledge), but I have to say, not only am I very intrigued by the reviews, but OMFG — a 3,000 bottle collection? I would love especially to experience the Rose and Jasmine in the Co2 extract form…just to see how much truer they are. I live in the U.S. and would LOVE to win 5ml samples of each!
