The latest launch from Penhaligon's comes with a vibrant spring in its step, something we all could use a little of at this time of year. Due to grace those of us in Great Britian with its presence in early March, Ostara is "a modern interpretation of the delicate and incandescent daffodil flower. An olfactory journey – from bulb to bud to bloom." An English girl to my core, daffodils are so synonymous with the beginning of spring that it is impossible not to feel cheery when they start to pop up everywhere. Penhaligon's, alongside venerable perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, designed Ostara as "a symbol of the optimism and revival of spring. In 1802, the distinguished poet William Wordsworth wrote about a sea of daffodils in his poem, ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’. Excerpts have been included on the outer packaging of the fragrance to reflect the radiance of the flower.” The fragrance also launches with stunning hand-illustrated tissue papers for wrapping, and some of the most beautiful packaging I have seen from Penhaligon's in a while. Illustrator Melissa Bailey has produced exquisite watercolour depictions of the perfume and considering my love of Penhaligon's– and also all things painterly- you can imagine that I was positively bubbling over with excitement for this launch.

As ever with a Duchaufour  floral creation, the conceptual image of a newly opening flower bud bursts forth from the very first spritz. It is a vibrant, translucent dab of intense yellow pigment spreading across damp watercolour paper, beginning with unfurling petals, sharpened slightly with fresh greens and citrus. A seamlessly light opening that deepens into luscious, fleshy hyacinth and narcissus pollen as the fragrance warms on the skin. Beeswax makes itself apparent with a gorgeous, realistic smudge of honeyed warmth, bringing the fruity blackcurrant along with it to sweeten the scent into full bloom. Ostara is completely beguiling by this point, so flooded with cool spring sunshine and textural shadows that one cannot help but long for warmer weather.

Bertrand Duchaufour puts his signature 'solar effect' to good use here. A creamy depth, ever so slightly reminiscent of sun lotion without a hint of tropical beach babe. It seems to bring all those white blooms into perfect harmony together, a daffodil trumpeting its spring chorus into a clear blue sky. The earthy, resinous base notes of the fragrance, blended smoothly with vanilla and musks, give Ostara deep roots. The scent doesn't drift away on a playful breeze, it stands tall and shines before wilting gently onto a bed of candied violets.

I am always excited by new fragrances from Penhaligon's but Ostara has surpassed my expectations. It is a truly glorious scent, long lasting with a quiet yet willful projection, easy to wear yet complex enough to satisfy the perfumista in me. The bottle and box are just so covetable and to spitz oneself lavishly in this perfume is like switching on the sunshine. This will be the one for you if you enjoy your florals bright, seamless and soft.

Ostara features the usual extensive note listing with top notes of Clementine, Bergamot, Red Berries CO2, Juniper, Spearmint, Blackcurrant Bud CO2, Violet Leaf Absolute, Leafy Effects and Aldehydes; a heart of Hyacinth, Narcissus Absolute, Beeswax Absolute, Cyclamen, Ylang-Ylang, Hawthorn and Wisteria; and base notes of Styrax Resinoid, Vanilla, Benzoin, Musk, Amber and White Wood Effects

Editor’s Note: Ostara will be sold May 1, 2015 at Saks Fifth Avenue NYC and online 50 ml/$100 and 100ml $135

  • Ostara sounds amazing! I must say, as another snow storm rages outside, we, here in New England, are dying for spring. I am really captivated by the backstory to this fragrance; I always loved that poem as a little girl and the illustrations are just my style too. I am a floral designer and bulb flowers are my favorite, plus there is just nothing like that first green of Spring!
The Penhaligon’s fragrance that most intrigued me was Tralala, although I have never fallen in love with one of their scents. I long to smell Ostara because of its embodiment of Spring and its green facets.
    I live in Connecticut (U. S.).
    Thank you for the draw!

  • I live in the US. I have been searching for a narcissus scent and would love to try this new one. Juniper Sling with its lime and gin notes is a favorite.

  • There’s a daffodil festival in my home town, and I just love to celebrate this beautiful flower. I’d love to try a perfume that embodies this flower and my memories associated with it. I’ve never tried a Penhaligons, though I’ve wanted to try their iconic violet. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • We are badly in need of spring around these parts! And just looking at the pictures for this review made me feel a little bit more cheery 🙂 I have never tried anything from Penhaligons, thank you! I am in the US.

I would love to try the because in the cold and gloom of winter, a “newly opening flower bud” is just what is needed to bring cheer and hopefulness! I live in the U.S. I do not yet have a favorite Panhaligons as I have not tried many from this line yet. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love daffodils and their soapy zing – isn’t that enough for me to want to try Ostara?
So far, my favorite Penhaligon’s fragrance is Juniper Sling, but I haven’t tested many of the range.
I live in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the draw!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

what a timing, my Sartorial is on the way…i would like to try this because it seems Duchaufour is trying to present his version of fruit floral in this fragrance..my fav. Penhaligon is LP9 for men but the reviews i have read about Sartorial, it may become my favorite. thanks for the draw. i am in the US

  • As an ice storm raged here in the eastern US and I sought refuge in my darker winter scents, I wondered what I would turn to “should” warmer weather return. Ostara may be the answer! It is brightly floral, but complex, and I can picture the daffodils that I loved as a child as I imagine wearing it. I like Iris Prima the best ( so far ).

  • daffodils and narcissi were the flowers my grandmother cultivated in her garden so for me it’s this fantastic trip back to my childhood days… i still haven’t found my Holy Grail scent featuring them so i’d love to try Ostara.
my favourite Penhaligon’s is Peoneve – another interpretation of my grandmother’s garden 🙂
thank you for the draw. i am in the EU.

  • Robert Herrmann says:

I love Penhaligons Lily Of The Valley, and would love to try the new daffodil, my favorite harbinger of spring! i live in the USA

  • Trying to decide whether I’d like a daffodil perfume best now when it’s still not yet real spring or when the daffodils actually blooms… There’s something about using perfume to dream of a different season and/or place, e.g. to long for spring during cold, rainy days.
I love daffodils and narcissus in general as they’re such bright, happy signs of spring and easter. My dad, who passed away autumn 2013, planted the lawn full of daffodils so we have more or less a sea of yellow facing the road every spring — a placement that means both we and all who pass by can enjoy the blooming. So far this year, they’ve just started to poke through the grass so there’s still weeks to go until they bloom. (*sigh* Well, at least we have snowdrops, crocus and winter aconites)
Have only tried one Penhaligon fragrance so can’t really say I have a fave among them yet. I’m in the EU.

  • sartorial and elixir are my favorite Penhaligons
Here in the northeast USA we are really suffering from winter blues so I would love to win

  • Victor Wong says:

  • This just sounds so perfect! Spring will soon be arriving where I am, and right now I have a nice bunch of cut daffodils in a vase to help keep me in a good mood! Yellow is my favorite color; the citrus, green and narcissus notes are very appealing, too, so I feel I’d like everything about this perfume, and I’m happy to read about its launch. I am in the US.

  • Greg Mayne says:

I am in North America (Canada). I am a huge fan of flowery and light scents, and this one sounds delightful. With spring on the way, this would be something I’d definitely wear! As for the house, Opus 1870 has been one of my go-to night out fragrances! It’s elegance in a bottle.

    Thanks for the draw!
