You are sunlight and I, moon. Joined by the gods of fortune. Midnight and high noon. Sharing the sky. We have been blessed, you and I.” – Miss Saigon

The first fragrance in Amouage’s mysterious new “Midnight Flower” collection, Sunshine Woman, launched last year (CaFleureBon Best of Scent 2014) and gave us a glimpse into the fearless new direction that Christopher Chong, Amouage’s Creative Director, was taking us. Its counterpart, Sunshine Man, arrives in the U.S. next month to shed new light on this intriguing collection.

When I first heard that Amouage was working on a “Sunshine” duo, there was, admittedly, a moment of concern. With a very closed mind, my thoughts turned to the endless barrage of frivolous-but-friendly summer fragrances that hit department store counters at the first sign of the sunny season. Would Amouage’s new collection have the literal and conceptual depth for which they’re known? Thankfully, I quickly learned that the only thing shallow about Sunshine Woman was my own preconception. To further prove me wrong comes Sunshine Man. One spray from my preview sample was enough to convince me that “frivolous” is not in Christopher Chong’s vocabulary. Rather, he was “inspired by the movement of an eclipse and the interplay between cool and warm, light and dark.” This, as a muse, granted a boundless array of possibilities both philosophical and cerebral … and an unexpected adjective soon to be discussed.

Sunshine Man opens with an expansive, chordal blast of energy. Top notes of lavender and orange brandy light up an evening sky of cedar, tonka and vanilla basenotes. Ancillary notes of bergamont, clary sage and juniper berry repeatedly flash and fade, the successive illuminations which blaze after a sun-gazer closes his or her eyes. I further perceive something akin to black pepper which adds to the fluid dimensionality. The cedarwood note is, I believe, the same bracing accord that was used in Reflection Man. There is interplay between (ostensibly) opposing elements which—at the expense of mixing metaphors—reminds me of a color wheel: hues which are seemingly opposites are often the most complimentary.

The position of the earth or the conditions of the weather do not negate the fact that the sun—or the moon for that matter—is always shining somewhere. Hence, the interplay of light and dark. This is sunshine, but not necessarily the summer sun. Spectacularly mercurial, this could be a blood-orange autumnal sun, a blinding sunlight reflecting from snow, or a tranquil sunrise through a bedroom window. Moreover, I can’t help but perceive that some of the light comes from a sparkle in Christopher Chong’s eye. After the cerebral depth explored in most of Amouage’s creations, it’s clear that he had fun here. In that, I see yet another contrast: intellect, rather than ignorance, is bliss.

You have the sun, you have the moon…and you’ve got The Rolling Stones — Keith Richards. by Nicky Barkla

Keith Richards by Nicky Barkla

Where previous releases drew from music as inspiration, Sunshine Man follows suit. Rather than Madame Butterfly (Honour), La Traviata (Opus IX) or Swan Lake (Memoir), Sunshine Man takes a new approach, as described by Mr. Chong: “Enticing layers of freshness and warmth with a ‘Rock n Roll’ twist.” It’s refreshing to see Amouage evolve in directions no one would expect”.   As Keith Richards once said, “You’ve got the sun, you’ve got the moon, and you’ve got the Rolling Stones.” Like its predecessor, Sunshine Man is unlike anything Amouage has ever created, yet undeniably Amouage. Like previous releases from the house, Sunshine Man is lavish and special—special, however, through its unabashed fun-factor. With due respect to Keith Richards, I joyously proclaim: “You’ve got the sun, you’ve got the moon, and you’ve got Christopher Chong.

This seems like a departure from traditional Amouage DNA with gourmand and woody aspects. The Amouage I like the most is still Amouage Gold. I am in the US

  • enjoyed about Mike’s review
I really enjoyed the quote at the beginning of the review. I enjoyed the pictures that match the review so well and this particular phrase “Sunshine Man opens with an expansive, chordal blast of energy.”

I am registered reader from the EU.

Thank you for this opportunity! Wish you all the best!

  • I have heard good early things about this Sunshine. I enjoyed in this review the descriptive paragraph the most, I really believe I have a handle on what this must smell like. I am happy wearing Jubilation for men from Amouage. USA

  • I’m really looking forward to this! I struggled with Sunshine Woman, I wanted to love it, I really did but it just left me flat. So when I read the notes of “Man” I thought now THIS is the one I’m gonna love! I’m waaay more Rock n’ Roll than opera anyway, and I’m ready to rock this perfume! I love Amouage Lyric Man and live in the USA.

Each Amouage’s new release is an event, one like or not their fragrances but none of them go unnoticed. Sunshine Man sounds great and unconventional sunny.
My favorites Amouage are Interlude Man and Memoir Man.
    I live in Italy.

I rather liked the Keith Richards reference. I’m into Opus IX (note: La Traviata was my first live opera). U.S.

  • I liked the description of the actual “juice” the most. I love Journey Woman and live in the EU.

  • Very nice review, I enjoyed to read it. I have never tried any of Amouage perfumes, but I heard a lot of wonderful thinks from those perfumes. I would very like to try it.
    I live in Europe.

Lovely sentence: “Spectacularly mercurial, this could be a blood-orange autumnal sun, a blinding sunlight reflecting from snow, or a tranquil sunrise through a bedroom window.” The only Amouage scent I have tried is Sunshine Woman, which I like quite a bit, so I’d love to smell the man version! I’m in USA.

Also, I’m dying to know what role Michael Devine will play on Orange is the New Black!

  • I was sent Sunshine Woman by a friend and like this “fearless new direction” Christopher Chong is going. I would like to smell both versions together. I like to wear Interlude Woman. 🙂 USA

  • My favorite Amouage perfume has to be the only one I’ve tried: Fate. It’s so lovely that I’m dying to try others. The idea of orange brandy intrigues me in this one. Thanks for the review, and the draw. I’m in the US.

  • My favorite Amouage Opus IX, I enjoyed the part where the perfume is described like a “blood-orange autumnal sun, a blinding sunlight reflecting from snow” so nicely put
I live in EU andI thank you for this lovely review and draw as well.

  • Thank you for the review and draw!
Amouage Jubilation XXV makes me jubilant! And Opus VI makes my heart happy.
So, given that I tend to prefer warm bases and more masculine-leaning fragrances, Sunshine Man sounds perfect! Based on this review, I really really want to try it. All of the imagery draws me in, even more than the notes–the eclipse, studies in contrasts, the many seasons and feelings of sunlight.

I love sunsets more than noon, and autumn more than summer, so like Mike I also did not get too excited for a yellow Sunshine scent. But knowing that he was blown away by Sunshine makes me think I will be too.

Also loved this part: ” After the cerebral depth explored in most of Amouage’s creations, it’s clear that he had fun here. In that, I see yet another contrast: intellect, rather than ignorance, is bliss”

  • What a great review to read! Amouage has to be one of the most elegant houses out there. I really enjoy Reflection and Dia Man, and the rest of their line is incredible as well. Sunshine Man I’m sure will be another blessing to my nose. I really enjoyed how in-depth the article was. I couldn’t stop reading, it was such well written! I’m in Canada and thank you for the draw.

  • The sentence: “You’ve got the sun, you’ve got the moon, and you’ve got Christopher Chong” it’s really fun, I don’t know how it will be possible to encounter a funny perfume, so curious to smell this one and I must say the notes are appealing for a masculine scent and so different from others Amouage for Men. Having some Amouages it’s very difficult to say which one is my favourire, it depends on the mood, perhaps Dia woman, because I wear it so often , or Lyrim w., so delicate and beautiful. For Man I also love Memoir a lot, and Dia M. By the way…I haven’t smell Sunshine woman yet 🙁
    I’m in EU.

  • I can clearly see the August starfall when I read Mike’s review! It’s a vivid description! I am a huge fan of citrus and wood combos, and Amouage Man is probably my kind of intellectual fresh and sunny fragrance!
I am in love with the whole Library collection of Amouage, and any single one out of it would make me happy!
    Thank you for the chance!
    I am in Bulgaria (EU).

  • Ahh, Amouage (and Mr. Chong), how I adore thee! What a wonderful, evocative review! I love the Rolling Stones association, and I agree, intellect IS bliss! I think that Opus V may be my current fave, but Sunshine Man sounds divine (I’m several behind in the Amouage collection.) I live in the U.S.

  • Lovely review! I’ve always adored the presentation of Amouage. Its so high quality and elegant. I enjoyed reading about Sunshine. It sounds very fresh and perfect for warm weather. Unfortunately, I’ve never tried anything from Amouage but I will soon! Canada

  • I’ve been looking forward to this fragrance for a while now! I’m a huge fan of Amouage, with my favorite being Epic Man. This one sounds so bright and lively and I love the floral and fruity notes in it. I know this fragrance will be a masterpiece, as many others from this house has been. Awesome review!

    I’m a Canadian reader.
