New Niche Fragrance Review: Parfums M. Micallef Style + BlackTie Draw

Cary Grant

When it comes to style men have it easy. If you’re a man and you have a basic suit, a couple of jackets, some shirts and ties to go with a few pairs of dress pants you’re pretty much good to go. You can get dressed and look stylish for almost any occasion. What hasn’t been easy for guys is to find a fragrance as easily stylish as our wardrobe. It isn’t a totally hopeless choice we face but, really guys; there are probably no more than a dozen formal men’s fragrances. That being said I really look forward to finding a new one to go on my “black tie” shelf. The new release from Parfums M. Micallef Style is going to be a new addition to that shelf.

Martine Micallef and Geoffrey Nejman

It is easy to forget that Parfums M. Micallef is really two creative people. Obviously Martine Micallef has her name on the bottle but her husband Geoffrey Nejman also has made some memorable perfumes including one of those fragrances on my “black tie” shelf, Emir. When I took my first sniff of Style M. Nejman’s style was very apparent. Where Emir was an homage to oud, Style is about evolving from spice and smoke into lavender, incense and wood. Style is all about smelling your best while also looking your best.

If you’ve ever been downwind of a bonfire and smelled your clothes as you put them in the laundry a few days later you will have an idea of the early going. There is a slightly musky, slightly smoky initial accord. What is particularly interesting is when the spices show up; cardamom, cinnamon and especially nutmeg comes off like they have been roasted in that imaginary bonfire. It makes for one of the most interesting openings I’ve experienced in quite a while. Then just like a floral breeze lavender arrives and blows away all of the smokiness. A smidge of jasmine and lily of the valley add some sweet and green, respectively, with the green keeping the lavender more on the herbal side of that note. The base gets very strong as an excellent patchouli along with frankincense and sandalwood create a very traditionally masculine base.

George Clooney

Style has outstanding longevity and average sillage.

Johnny Depp

As much as I am talking about Style being a “black tie” fragrance I wore it to the office one day while evaluating it and because the sillage is not overbearing it is also a good everyday fragrance. I noticed that while I was wearing it I definitely felt a little more confident and stylish even without wearing my tux.

  • They all look amazing, but tonight I will go with Johnny Depp! I am so loving MM Black Ananda, but I also love Mon Parfum.

  • George Clooney 100%. Have yet to try an MM, but the house is on my list! Thanks for the draw.

  • I have yet to try anything from this house, but I’d really like to. With all respect to those dashing gentlemen, none of them epitomizes black tie style for me (although Cary Grant comes closest). The epitome of black tie style is either Fred Astaire or James Bond, depending on the “mood” desired.

  • My favorite M Micallef aoud gourmet and avante garde
I think Johnny Depp rocks his black tie

  • I can hardly tell the difference between Cary Grant and George Clooney — but to me they’re both very very black tie. Born in black tie. I love me the Johnny Depp, but he’s a little eccentric now to rock black tie.

  • To be honest, none of those guys are my cup of tea, but if we’re talking fashion, I like Johnny Depp’s black-tie look; modern, stylish yet slightly scruffy.

My favourite M. Micallef fragrance is Gaiac.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • George Clooney or Johnny Depp, depending on the occasion. I just got a sample set of the Micallef vanilla fragrances, and am looking forward to trying them when I get some time to do so.

  • I think Cary Grant fits the picture best.
I don’t know any of the fragrances of M.Micallef
    Thanks

  • I must admit that Clooney looks very close to the “black tie” concept. My fav ist Gaiac. Thx!

  • I am so glad Johnny Depp’s an option because he definitely has my vote. 😀
And my favorite M. Micallef would be Aoud 1.

  • If I have only those 3 choices I would have to pick up Cary Grant.

My favs are Jewel and Gold.

    Thank you for the draw!

  • Cary Grant for sure, but Johnny Depp looks great in that photo. Wish he looked like that all the time instead of the walking wind chime look he usually favors.

  • Cary Grant, I think. I haven’t had the chance to try many MM fragrances but I do like Gaiac.

  • I don’t have a favorite MM fragrance…but I have a favorite of the other, and that is George Clooney!

  • Actually they all look nice. My favorite version of the black tie is Johnny Dep. A very bohemian version.

I haven’t tried any Micallef scents (yet).

  • Cary Grant is the only one of the three that, to me, embodies black tie style. Clooney tries to hard to be liked and Johnny Depp has cheek bone implants, style should be charming but have the confidence and the wisdom to not care about pleasing everyone.

My favorite M. Micallef is Gaiac.

  • Definitely Cary Grant! One of the most handsome, suave and elegant movie icons ever.
I am a very big fan of the Micallef house, but my favourite, and overall one of my favourite perfumes, is Gaïac.

  • Oh they look all very handsome, but…of course Cary Grant is a real gentleman, but I like Johnny Depp 😉 My favourite Micallef is Gardenia.

  • George Clooney was born to wear a tux … he has definitely aged well into it.

I haven’t tested any frags from Micallef … yet.

  • I admire George Clooney, but my choice for real “black-tie style” is the elegant Archie Leach aka Cary Grant.
I don’t have a favourite Micallef, but am interested in her new Vanilla line.

  • Good golly, definitely Cary Grant. The others don’t even come close. I haven’t liked any Micallefs so far…

  • Cary Grant.

I have tried three obscure Micallefs (found in the dark corners of a discounter’s warehouse…). They are called something like Le Parfum 1, Le Parfum 2, and Le Parfum 3. One of them is intended for men. They all smell good but appear to have been discontinued quite some time ago. I’d love to find out the notes and stories behind them.

Anyway, thanks for having this draw.

  • CARY GRANT!!!!! Of course. 🙂 Haven’t tried any M. Micallef scents…so would love to win! Thanks for the draw!

  • Cary Grant all the way.His style was timeless.Ylang in gold is my favorite M.Micallef fragrance. Thanks for the draw!

  • George Clooney hands down. My favorite Parfums M. Micallef has to be Aoud 1. I really wish it was easily accessible in the States.

  • Johnny Depp- he’s so elegantly modern..
haven’t tried, yet any of MM fragrances
    thanks for the draw

  • All three are luscious eye candy but Carey Grant embodies black tie style like no one else. I love Gaiac and would like to try more from the house. Thanks for the draw.

  • Without a doubt Cary Grant would be the one to best embody “black tie style”. Altho’ George is certainly a good enough approximation in this century. 🙂 – (Altho I’d still take Depp first tie or no tie.) 😉
~ As for fave Micallef it’s hands down Note Vanillee. (The original one is still the best vanilla ‘fume ever, IMO)

  • Gary Grant for traditional, Johnny Depp for sexy. Can’t choose between them two, and these are two quite different styles anyway. I am not sure about a favorite M. Micallef fragrance yet, but I wonder what my husband would think of Style.

  • Cary Grant by a mile! Thanks for the review and draw. I love that bonfire smell! I kept a fleece I wore in the evenings by the fire on a camping trip out of the laundry for an embarrassing amount of time just so I could bury my face in it…

  • Gotta be George clooney , even men think he’s gorgeous in black tie . I do not know much abt m miCallef. But this sounds really great!
