Solar’1 is the newest fragrance from independent perfumer Dana El Masri of Parfums Jazmin Sarai. As with all of Dana’s scents to date, music is her muse and Solar’1 was  inspired by D’Angelo’s soulful song Africa.  The minute the fragrance is applied to the skin the weary heart’s tears are dried by the comforting sun of the Mother Land and hope is restored to the soul as it travels back to the essence of civilization.

The fragrance begins with comforting warmth compliments of ginger and Osmanthus absolute and continues the sun beam theme throughout the heart with allspice while the earthy aroma of cocoa mingles in the background. Give it an hour or two and you’ll think you’re in the company of the regal and wise elephant as leather notes drift about and are blanketed by a soft cloud of musk. You  immediately notice the high quality of ingredients and although the sillage is softer than in the collection,  I believe it was purposely designed that way because the soul always speaks in soft whispers.  Longevity is excellent, I still smelled it on my skin after eight hours and the scent is perfect for both man and woman. Although this fragrance smells amazing now, I believe it will just bloom in warmer weather so I can’t wait until Spring when the sun beats against my skin and heats the fragrance up even more. Notes: Ginger, Osmanthus absolute, cocoa, castoreum, allspice, labdanum, and musk.

Sun Kissed by The Nosey Artist

(written to the beat of Africa by D’Angelo)

You’ve become my Mother Land sweeter than my mother’s hands,

On my face when I’ve had a bad day

I make haste but you say you need space,

Just know there’s none other than,

You…that make me feel this way

My young Cancer your aura is like amber,

You’re cocoa to my soul your essence is Osmanthus

What’s the chance of fixing our circumstances?

Take all the time you need as long as I get an answer

Just speak from the soul,

It’s ok to open up and let the heart take control

If you truly feel like this than greet me with a kiss,

I don’t want to lose grip or ever part from you no!

You’re my skin scent ginger and incense,

Kehinde Wiley

Got me on cloud nine I feel like I’ve been swept

Off my feet and I don’t ever want to get up,

This love is worth fighting for I swear I’ll never let up

You’re my Mother Land sweeter than my mother’s hands,

On my face when I’ve had a bad day

I make haste but you say you need space,

Just know there’s none other than

You…that make me feel this way

Art direction: MC D’Angelo released Africa in 2000 as a track on his Voodoo Album. Kehinde Wiley is based in NYC and known for his naturalist paintings of people of brown skin in heroic poses. I was at his Brooklyn Museum Exhibit  A New Republic early March 2015 so his art spoke to me as I read TNA rap, listened to D’Angelo and wore Solar’1.  Writer’s Note: Michelyn described this as Dana’s best fragrance yet in the  best of 2015 roundup and as one who has been lucky enough to experience her entire line I can attest to that.

  • I absolutely loooove D’angelo’s music so that along is enough to intrigue me about Solar’1! I really like Nosey’s line “My young Cancer your aura is like amber” because I’m a Cancer, though maybe not so young anymore 😉 I’m in Canada. Thanks!

It’s wonderful that El Masri has a consistent theme of musical inspirations for her perfumes. I have tried two and am excited to try the rest, especially if, as you say, this is her best yet. I believe I will enjoy the mix of cocoa and labdanum in particular.

  • Wow – I can’t even imagine cocoa and osmanthus together, but it sounds amazing. Like a soothing warm beverage. I too want to be cradled by the mother land! Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

This fragrance seems a nice tribute to Africa. Looking at the D’Angelo’s picture reminded me one of his videos really became popular because of the focus on his abs 🙂 The notes in Solar1 have been approp. chosen to remind one of Africa such as musk and cacao. thanks a lot for the draw. i am in the US

  • The fragrance is described as having complex development and being made from quality ingredients. All that is intriguing. What I liked most about the rap? Well this, “Osmanthus and circumstances”. 🙂 U.S.A.

  • I loved the notes in Solar1 which have intrigued me, especially when wearing on a hot day.! Nosey’s rap was great. D’Angelo is a homie from my RVA days and his song I think connects well with Solar1! I live in the US and thanks for the opportunity! 🙂

  • Solar ‘1 sounds gorgeous! I love that it has a cocoa note in it. I’ve been wearing fragrances that have that note in it for the winter (I Love NY for All by Bond No. 9 is my fave)
    I live in the U.S.

  • I’m intrigued by the ginger and cocoa part hmm and how you think the ensemble may behave in warm weather… My favourite part of this very intimate rap is “You”re my skin scent ginger and incense”. Can’t wait to get my hands on another one of her perfumes!

  • The note combination of ginger, osmanthus, allspice, etc., sounds amazing. My favorite line of the rap is, “You’re my skin scent ginger and incense.”, and I absolutely love the Keyhinde Wiley paintings that accompany it! I live in the US. Thanks for the chance.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

my favourite sequence is “You’re cocoa to my soul your essence is Osmanthus”, ‘I live in the EU, Austria.

Rhyming “Osmanthus” with “circumstances”: good use of poetic license! Osmanthus with a cocoa background sounds beguiling. I’m in USA.

  • I really liked the ‘You’re my skin scent ginger and incense,” line from the rap poem. The note line up sounds fantastic! I;m in the US.

  • “You’re cocoa to my soul” is a really great line and I’m really intrigued by the combination of cocoa, castoreum and musk! I’m in the EU (Finland).

  • Another great read! I love ginger in fragrances, so this one is definitely on my radar. The rap poem was also amazing. ” You’re cocoa to my soul your essence is Osmanthus. What’s the chance of fixing our circumstances?” That had to be my favorite part of it. Thank you for the draw and I’m in Canada.

  • D’angelo is one beautiful man! I saw him in concert back in the early 2000s a few times and he put on one helluva show!

I love the notes in this one: Ginger, Osmanthus absolute, cocoa, castoreum, allspice, labdanum, and musk. I’ve always been obsessed with ginger scents, when done right. It’s got that freshness that is uplifting. Labdanum has also been making appearances in many perfumes, but I have yet to try one with ginger.

I’d love to see someone perform the Nosey Artist’s lyrics to D’angelo’s song. I love these lines:

y young Cancer your aura is like amber,

You’re cocoa to my soul your essence is Osmanthus

What’s the chance of fixing our circumstances?

I live in the USA, thank you for the draw!

  • Mrs. MacDonald says:

Nice! Solar 1 and it’s warming soul intrigues me, and anyone that can write beautiful words is a star in my book! I’m in Canada

  • I am not entering the draw because I want someone else to have the pleasure of experiencing Dana El Masri’s perfumes. I have recently sampled Solar1, along with How You Love, and Otis and Me. They are amazing, I just bought a bottle of Otis and Me and am checking the mailbox every day for its arrival! I wish her much success and enjoyment of her craft.

  • The notes like: ginger, osmanthus absolute, cocoa, castoreum, allspice, labdanum, musk all very interesting to resist from smelling. Also the words of this song reminds me of a sensual mixing the finding of ones promise land like Africa.
I am a registered reader living in EU.

  • I like the image of sunbeams through spice, and the leather of an elephant’s skin. I am not familliar with this line. Thank you for the draw. USA

  • I loved the rap poem! I’m also a fan of the ginger and osmanthus mix. I think those two go great together. Thank you for the draw and I’m a Canadian reader

  • Another great read TNA! I see this fragrance as a serious head turner. It sounds very very unique and natural, and I have nothing like this in my collection. That’s what interests me the most! The poem was also awesome and I congratulate you for finding something to rhyme with osmanthus! Thanks for the draw.
