New 2018 Launch DSH Perfumes Heirloom Elixirs: Essenza dell’Ibisco

Dawn and me (photos 2017)

Throughout our 10 year friendship, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes and I have collaborated on quite a few perfumes. These interchanges of ideas ranged from CaFleureBon’s Lautrec (2011), Become The Shaman (2017),  Reveries de Paris  (2015) to naming Cyan. Last month, Dawn and I had our monthly chat, (she’s a busy one, with the Essence Studio, teaching classes, her multi-media art, Denver Art Museum partnerships and her most important role as a wife and mom).

I beseeched Dawn to bring back some of the discontinued  fragrances I loved. I wanted more Essenza dell’Ibisco and Giardini Segreti both favorites of mine from her earlier Italian series; I was down to my last drops. So under the guise of having a “brilliant idea”, I asked her to offer archival perfumes, that either were discontinued to make way for all her newness, (because ingredients changed due to scarcity or other reasons) on a bi-monthly basis. My concept was motivated two-fold, selfishly so I can get my hands on more of the “oldies” and because Dawn' s work is so popular worldwide that some of her earlier fragrances would be new for many perfumistas. I thought how great it would be for her many many admirers and collectors to be able to buy DSH Perfumes that they were not familiar with from earlier times.  –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

“The Heirloom Elixir collection gives a new slant to the Limited Edition concept. As you may know, I have a tendency to be a very prolific artist… I seem to have an insatiable need to explore new ideas, consider strange & newly discovered materials, look at crazy, unusual designs, as well as classical interpretations of my own based on masterpieces of perfume history.  Here's how it goes: Every two months (or so), per year, we will release a new limited edition fragrance in numbered bottles. It will only be available for sale during the selected month period and once it's gone, it's gone… with one exception. * If you bought or were gifted one of our numbered bottles, we will keep a record, and you can contact us for refills*. So, if you fall madly in love with one of our Heirloom Elixir editions, it can still be YOURS long after the edition has closed. {How cool is that?} In honor of Michelyn's gift, we are dedicating the very first edition to her with the re-release of her all-time favorite DSH Perfume (from a 2006 limited edition collection): DSH Perfumes Heirloom Elixirs Essenza dell'Ibisco. As an opulent, fruity-floral tuberose perfume with rich incense and purring animalics in the base, Michelyn has long said that Essenza dell'Ibisco was ahead of its time. We both feel that now is the perfect time for the new DSH Perfumes Heirloom Elixirs Essenza dell'Ibisco to take center stage and wow the crowd. I'm truly over the moon to be able to present Heirlooms Elixirs Essenza dell'Ibisco and feel her sing anew on my own skin (and yours).”

 And More…. Dawn smelling hibiscus

“The initial spark of inspiration for the perfume that became Essenza dell’Ibisco came as a flash of vibrant color while on a trip to Italy in 2003. We had been staying in Venice (my favorite place!) and were visiting Murano and Burano.  I was struck by the wonderful colors…the combinations one against another; each revealing a new beauty from the juxtaposition. I noticed it first with the buildings on the islands: orange then bright pink.  Again in the gardens, and again in a blown glass gallery, and once again a glorious fabric shop filled with silk scarves. I loved the vibration; the energy and excitement of the two colors together.  It was happening: a perfume “feeling” was forming.  Something lush and opulent and maybe a bit over the top. We visited another garden thick with hibiscus flowers and there it was again: those COLORS!  Bees were buzzing everywhere, swooning as they dipped into the calyx of the flowers coming out dazed and covered in sensuous pollen.  I knew this was it.”-Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

I am so excited to have #1 in the series

Dawn did take into consideration that tuberose can be polarizing, especially on me, added more plum and gently dialed back the indoles and animalics. Heirloom Elixirs Essenza dell'Ibisco is 92 percent true to the original, but in my opinion. sexier, more tropical, and more opulent than the 2006 version. The hibiscus is tromper le nez… the ambrettte seeds create the illusive scent. I am thrilled that 12 years later, I will be wearing it once again… I think you will too!

  • Thank you for the beautiful presentation of these exciting news, and of your fruitful collaboration and friendship over the years!
I’d be delighted to try this.

  • Fabulous news! Dawn’s work is so great and always full of surprises. Can’t wait to try this, sexy tuberose! Yum!

  • Dawn is a true artist and I honestly love everything I’ve tried so far from her line. I am a HUGE admirer of her work. No reason to mention I am dying to try Essenza dell’Ibisco… Plum, tuborose and animalics and all done by Dawn. I won’t sleep tonight

I love the ‘numbered bottle’ concept–how good of Dawn to do this for her devoted customers. Today I am wearing her Cimabue, my favorite of creations to date, but who knows, Essenza dell’Ibisco may also steal my heart.

  • The list of notes reads like a poem, and it’s such a great idea to ask Dawn to bring back some of her earlier masterpieces: for a devoted perfumista there are few things sadder than not being able to get a chance to wear a treasured scent again.

  • Hibiscus, tuberose, beeswax, Australian Sandalwood ( my favorite sandalwood), orange flower absolute and more – wow!!! I am so happy that Michelyn inspired Dawn to bring back this beauty. ❤️

  • Michelyn, I knew that Reveries de Paris (which I own) was a collaboration between you and Dawn, but I had no idea that Lautrec was (which I also own and still have some drops left). I also have a small vial of the original version of Essensia del ‘ibisco. It was my favorite from the Italian collection. I think, in fact, I bought my bottle when it was being phased out. So how lovely that some of these scents will be brought back for a limited time. I can’t wait to see what else makes a reappearance!

  • I absolutely adore Dawn’s creativity. There’s something for everyone in her collection of fabulous perfumes. I’m looking forward to sampling this. USA

  • This is a great concept, re-releasing a fragrance and being able to get a refill of it once its be discountinued for good, is a frag lovers dream! I am so glad Michelyn was able to help get this fragrance and series created this was a fantastic idea and this fragrance sounds like a burst of loveliness!

What a great idea, and an awesome collaboration. I have a long list of fragrances I would love to see back in my collection that can no longer be found. Heirloom Elixirs Essenza dell Ibisco 2018 sounds amazing ladies, although I have to admit to being a bit wary of tuberose heavy fragrances. And the concept of having your own scent that you dip back into – swoon. Keep up the innovative ideas and collabs!

  • I’m so excited this one is coming back. I’ve been out for a while, but I used to really like it. I can think of several from the Versailles series that I’d love to see again, too.

  • What a wonderful idea! I especially like the option to refill the fragrance in the future. Anyone who has loved a limited release or discontinued scent can vouch for the feeling of loss when you spritz those last few drops, never to be smelled again! Now that feeling can be avoided entirely – what a lovely thought. And how lovely for Michelyn, too, to have her favorite back again!

  • This scent sounds gorgeous! A tuberose with rich incense and animalics in the base? I’m intrigued.

  • “Brilliant ideas” usually have some selfishness attached, but why the guise? Friendships that has been years, and collaborations that have been successful are a very good thing. What a wonderful idea and a fabulous concept to bring back limited editions of the well loved perfumes to those that appreciate them. The new a refreshed notes sound like perfection. I so respect when two minds and busy schedules work together so uniguely. Thank you ladies, we all appreciate your work.

  • What a fabulous idea. That’s just great that if you have a numbered bottle you will never “run out” of a beloved fragrance. I’ve got to get my nose on something of hers, I’ve been to the website and there are so many choices that I end up not choosing!! I’m always hearing such good things about her work.

  • Tuberose with generous dose of plum…sounds divine and just perfect for the beginning of rainy autumn. I have been wearing a touch of DSH’s Mata Hari to bed for the last week and it is way better warmer than woolly socks (and definitely more glamorous).

  • Count me in as an admirer of Dawn and her work! This is lovely idea! It’s hard to select a favorite DSH because Dawn does so many genres well. So instead of a favorite, my latest full bottle is Bakul Medjool. Thank you for the great article. We are stronger with our friends.

  • oh let me fall into a sea of colour! I love this limited edition but refillable idea so far from coorporate , so personal and so much love for Perfume right there!

  • This fragrance sounds amazing. I also like this idea of being able to reorder if you do fall in love with the fragrance.

  • Congratulations on accomplishing your ‘goal’ and getting what sounds like an even better version revived! I like the concept of always being able to reorder too. I’d love to smell this one…I love the concept of tuberose but the more indolic versions always turn me off.

  • Thanks for the sharing the news. Tuberose is tricky for me. How wonderul to have a perfumer that will “plum” something up for you 🙂

  • What a gorgeous floral combination! It sounds beautiful! I would love to try it. I’ve never sampled anything from the DSH perfume house.

  • It’s been a while. Time to revisit DSH fumes. Lurve tuberose, plum am on the fence about. Could just be the compositions I’ve found it in were not my cuppa entirely — gotta keep an open mind. Just mixed a martini using Lavender Hibiscus liqueur from a new CO distillery, the problem being I’m not detecting much if any hibiscus flavor/scent, while the lavender portion comes off as caraway to my tastebuds. Hmmm, my interest in scent to wear and scent to drink often overlap … and offer insights into each other.

  • I’m so praying this fragrance is brought back. I have heard great things about it and I would love to get a bottle.
