Memo Paris African Leather (Alineor Massent) -Fragrance Review+ Opposites Attract Draw

The African Queen 1951 – Humphrey Bogart – Katharine Hepburn

Memo Paris has a series of leather fragrances, Les Cuir Nomades that was launched with Irish Leather in 2013, homage to Clara Molloy husband’s John Malloy; Italian Leather, French Leather followed as well as Memo Paris Russian Leather that was reviewed by Sebastian last year here. Today he is reviewing Memo Paris African Leather, a fragrance that is very popular and has quite a few fans. The spicy Cardamom and dry leather in Memo Paris African Leather make for the perfect match. When I smell this complex and compliment-getting  eau de parfum (composed by House Perfumer Alienor Massenet), I envision the pairing of Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in the movie African Queen. At first the uptight missionary and the heavy drinking Captain seem mismatched, but “opposites attract” and they develop a love affair as they travel together downriver in Africa around the start of World War I.

Notes: Oil of bergamot, Oil of cardamom, Oil of saffron, Oil of cumin, Geranium absolute, Oil of patchouli, Oud accord, Leather accord, Essence of vetiver, Musk

Really enjoyed all of Sebastian’s Memo reviews thus far, and I’ll have to agree with this one as well. His excellent use of imagery says it all. Incidentally, I had the very same reaction when I first smelled African Leather, mainly due to its strong use of spices giving it a rather “dusty” feel, as opposed to the green notes used in all of the others. Never minding that my favourite animal is the cheetah, the overall scent just reminds me of Indiana Jones or Han Solo from the Star Wars saga, on adventures in the deserts of Africa and Tatooine respectively. It’s rugged, it’s handsome and it’s easily my favourite of the line. I only wish I had a full bottle….

  • redneck gent says:

I have 5 designer fragrances. I would love to add this niche fragrance to my collection.

  • Andrei Caloian says:

Sebastian really makes the review worthy of sampling. African Leather has the notes that most intrigue me from the whole Leather line. The spices and leather should work great in combination, also the bottle design is the better in the line.

  • African is intriguing because the use of leather is what I look for in most fragrances. Their take on it according to Sebastian makes me wanting to have it. Please enter me in your giveaway. Thanks

  • Sebastian is a fantastic reviewer. I loved the note breakdown in African Leather. Sounds amazing from start to finish.

  • Luis Chavez says:

I loved the way Sebastian described African Leather,He said the note of cardamom is just beautiful!overall the review makes me wanna try this scent!please enter me in the Giveaway!!

  • Eric Sanchez says:

Great review from Sebastian!!! I haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing any of the fragrances from Memo Paris yet. Hopefully I will have the opportunity soon. Located here in Texas USA.

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

African leather love it. Im a fun of Sebastián so the review was great as usual
Never wear a Memo but Id love to

  • fazalcheema says:

Sebastian’s review indicates it is one of a kind leather that will impress those also who dont like leather. the cardamom note gives African Leather a unique twist and there is a dusty feel, probably a homage to African jungles. My favorite from Memo is Irish Leather. I am in US.

  • Although I don’t own African Leather it is my favorite leather from Memo Paris that I got my nose on. Sebastian is spot on it is “animalic” which I believe comes from the cumin, which my maturing nose has come to love. Awesome giveaway

  • I love how Sebastian describes the notes and makes parallels to a day in Africa on safari and then in the city. I haven’t been able to try any Memo Paris where I live yet, but I would love to have a bottle of this fragrance, if only for the cardamom/leather combination!

  • Michelle Maddox says:

This one looks like it would be amazing! Leather is one of my favorite notes ❤️

  • Love unisex fragrances! Sebastian’s reviews are always thorough and personal. Leather, spice and geranium? Count me in please, in the USA.

  • Leather and unisex, great possibilities. No favorite from Memo Paris, haven’t smelled any. USA

  • Sebastian is my most trusted reviewer. His nose and descriptions are spot on. I have driven well over an hour to get my nose on some of the fragrances he has reviewed. I am still relatively new to the community but my interest has quickly turned into a passion.

African Leather intrigues me because of its use of both cardamom and saffron in conjunction with leather. I also prefer unisex fragrances that are not overly feminine and challenges the senses. Sebastian enjoys this so win or lose, I will be sampling this!

  • HiMyNameIsWaste says:

Cumin + geranium sounds fantastic, like a sweaty flower. I like my flowers sweaty. Irish Leather is one of my go-tos, and I’ve been wanting to try African Leather ever since I first came across the line.

  • I’ve seen other reviews about this popular fragrance, but failed to get a sample anywhere. One thing I didn’t know that Sebastian brought up is that it has a dry essence, hence the African title. Love leather scents. U.S.A.

  • Always enjoy his reviews. Haven’t tried any Memo Paris fragrance yet
And would like to one day. Heard good things about African Leather and like to try it. Thanks for the giveaway. California

  • I’ve never tried any Memo Paris fragrances but I would love to try this one. What I liked most about Sebastian’review is when he described how the cardamom is really well done in this cologne. This got me interested because cardamom is one of my favorite notes. Thank you for the giveaway. I’m in the United States, New York.

  • I think this is one of my favorite fragrances I’ve tried lately, the only from the line I have smelled but I totally love Italian leather, great review by Sebastion!

  • I absolutely love the way this fragrance smells. Got a sample and really surprised at how I can stop think about maybe a purchase.

  • Nick rosenbeck says:

I tried this scent when I went to Portland a couple months ago and fell in love! Smells soooo amazing, and I haven’t picked it up yet. I liked that he linked the name with how the scent actually comes off your skin. Beautiful fragrance, beautiful review

  • I own Memo oud shams and it’s fantastic. I like the idea of cardamom and leather. Great review

  • Sebastian is great in dissecting the scent profile. I had a pleasure to smell this one and I could not describe it better. I tried this one and French Leather and I loved both. Thank you so much for a giveaway! (Niles, illinois).

  • This and Italian leather are just beautiful scents. They are both on my to buy list. Really hope I win this

  • Sebastian is somehow able to always come up with the perfect description for a fragrance. My favorite Memo is Italian Leather.

  • newyork318 says:

Looks like he really likes it too.
I’ve tried one of these and I tought its nice, not too sweet.
    Thanks cafleurebon.
    Happy Easter

  • I appreciated Sebastian’s vivid description of the fragrance, asking the viewer to take a sensory journey from the African safari to a city market. I was instantly transported. Thx.

  • Mito Pressler says:

Trust Sebastian reviews, as he has excellent taste. He is one of the few folks I would buy blind based on a review.

  • travis12364 says:

This fragrance sounds amazing with the spices and leather. I own 3 memo fragrances and my favorite is kedu, would love to add this to my collection!

  • I enjoyed Sebastian’s detailed description of African Leather. I love cardamom and when Sebastian mentioned it as a note in the fragrance it instantly peaked my interest. Add that to leather and I am eager to try it.

I do not own any Memo fragrances.

  • Eric I Diedrichson says:

I’m in the USA. I’m a leather lover. I had a sample of this and would love to have a full bottle

  • Armin Figo Dante says:

I always enjoy a lot of Sebastians review, Sebastian’s review on this African Leather, African Leather is a cardamom dominant note, i love the spices and mix with oud, leather and cardamom wow, its just brings your memories back in Africa, hope to win this full bottle, cross fingers for this and high hopes to win this, United States, California.

  • lordkelwynne says:

I particularly enjoyed Sebastian identifying the cardamom note in this fragrance. I too am a huge fan of cardamom. In fact, I not too long ago picked up a Cartier scent, after his review of that scent as cardamom heavy. Now, I will search out this Memo scent in Manhattan, as I’ve yet to own anything from that house. And I adore leather scents as well, This sounds as dreamy and perfect as I can imagine.

  • I really like how he talked about how the fragrance starts and ends. I can always appreciate a fragrance that tells a story as it develops! I’ve never tried a memo fragrance unfortunately but I’ve heard good things.

  • Devicemanager says:

  • As always I enjoyed Sebastin reviews!!! Sebastian you are great!!!
I am big fun of leather perfumes, but if thay not much rubbery or tire smell.
My favorite Memo is Irush Leather, which I did not like at first sniff, but I love this perfume.

  • I love how Seb described the cardamom in here! My favourites are African and French Leather. So I hope to win! Thanks for the opportunity.

  • Cardamom is one of my favorite notes in perfumery and I love Sebastian’s description of how it’s used in this fragrance. The only thing I’ve smelled from Memo is actually African Leather so thus far it’s my favorite! Good luck everyone!

I love this one. One of my faves from this house memo. When I first tried it, it caught me off guard and didn’t like as much because I was expecting something different.. more cuir and less green. As Sebastian said in his presentation of this gem, it has a vetiver note which at the time isn’t one of my favorite notes but this one has climbed the charts as for leathers I’ve tried. I sometimes layer this with a patchouli fragrance like LeMet or a Monsieur by Frederic Malle with great results however its outstanding on its own. Thanks for sharing another great review Sebastian Very well explained breaking down notes of African Leather. I alsow liked the way he tied analogies in with the notes. This is with out a doubt one of my faves from this house along with Irish leather and Shams oud. Thank you for entering me in this draw

  • NiceVULady says:

I always enjoy the specificity of Sebastian’s reviews. His descriptions are wonderful. I don’t have a favorite Memo fragrance, but anything that evokes The African Queen should be fabulous. One of my favorite movies.
Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews. This one is no exception. I like the idea of a dry, dusty, and spicy leather. Sounds wonderful, especially connected with Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen. I have not tried any Memo Paris fragrances. In the US.

  • Love cardamom, and love Sebastian’s reviews! leather and cardamom, looking forward to trying this one! thank you for the draw, and loved that first image! have not tried any other scents from this house, in the US.

  • His description of an earthy, spicy leather is so intriguing! As is a safari leather. He has a great way of painting an image of the frag. I have no favorites yet as I haven’t yet nosed one! Thanks for the giveaway. Live in Massachusetts, USA.

  • Incredible nots & beautiful review that paints such a vivid picture to describe the fragrance . Well done Sebastian . Thank you cafleurebon for this fantastic giveaway & hope to be the lucky winner ! Houston, Texas

  • I love Sebastian’s straight-forward review as always, he’s very good at succinctly describing the notes in a fragrance. I’m not a huge leather fan but this one does sound intriguing due to the cardamom note. My favorite Memo is Ilha do Mel. I’m in the U.S., thanks!

  • james weaver says:

  • Frank Gambina says:

I enjoyed how Sebastian compared the dry and aridness land of Africa with the dry scent of African leather. The mix of cardamom and leather sound appealing as well as the spicy nuances and the presentation of the bottle is amazing. My favorite from this house is Italian leather. New York.

  • doveskylark says:

How interesting that there is an aquatic note in this fragrance. This certainly sounds like a fragrance that takes the wearer on a journey. I love that the spice market is part of the journey. Oh, how I love spice markets. And I love anything animalic. I have only sampled Irish Leather from Memo Paris.
    I live in the USA.

I do follow Sebastian for a long-long time-since his old channel Man Loves Cologne. The way he describes things almost makes me feel like i’m wearing the fragrance he’s talking about.
African Leather is the 2nd best from the ones i’ve smelled from the brand. Right now i have 20 ml decant of Granada. Both are great but imo Granda is better.
