On December 7th, 2014,  Sniffapalooza's Seasonal Holiday Event headed down to New York City's West Village to the beautiful tres francais,  Annick Goutal boutique, located on 397 Bleecker Street. And what a most wonderful boite this is! The beautiful sunny sky and (very) brisk morning greeted close to sixty fragrance aficionados and experts for a most enjoyable two hour experience led by Sniffapalooza Founder Karen Dubin who prepared us for quite a treat -delectable gourmand desserts and Annick Goutal perfume pairings (courtesy of Financier Patisserie) presented for our sensory pleasure.

The Master Class (there were two sessions) was conducted by Francoise Alessi (Boutique Manager) and Cristina Valdes (Associate Brand Manager). They highlighted the house's origins founded in 1981 by the legendary icon of independent perfumery Annick Goutal.

The story of Annick Gouta'sl life, her passion for perfume,  her love of all things romantic, her classical music background and her passing (she bravely fought but lost her battle with breast cancer at age 53) resonated with me in a most personal way as do the fragrances.  Mme Goutal’s daughter Camille Goutal who has great style and flair is carrying on the tradition of French Haute perfumery with perfumer Isabelle Doyen who has worked with Annick Goutal Parums since1986.

The emotion of fragrance was the underlying theme of the presentation. Francoise spoke of the brand's love of their clients, the one on one consultations, the layering instead of blending one's scents and the House's continued dedicattion to Haute Perfumery. She stressed that love is always present in the House's creations, as if Mme Goutal was still with us.  Mme Allesi took our collective breath away as she showed the limited edition Annick Goutal  Un Matin D'Orage Butterfly Bottle (one of only ten in the United States) and its jewel-gift box.The butterfly is an important motif of the House.

The Pairings:

Eau de Charlotte (1982), named for Annick Goutal's stepdaughter, (a favorite of  Sr Editor The Silver Fox ) is a fruity gourmand with notes of vanilla and a superb  chocolate cacao which merged well with the Coconut Rochers

The glorious Eau de Hadrien (1981 and a 2008 FiFi Award Hall Of Fame recipient) with its wonderful citrus accords paired marvelously with the Key Lime Tarte and Lemon Madeleine (to die for!).

The masculine woody Sables fragrance (1985) was created by Annick Goutal for her husband, along with the Boite d'Epices candle, went well with the Pumpkin Spice Macaron (most delicious) best in context of a seasonal pairing the cinnamon and immortelle notes).

Quel Amour ! (2002), is a beautiful feminine floral and was the least successful pairing for me (on their own both wonderful). The Berry Tarte was fresh and the healthiest of line-up.

Vanille Exquise (2004) is a seductive feminine Oriental Vanilla  and a perfect pairing with the Vanilla Macaron.

annick goutal vent de folie

Vent de Folie debuted earlier this year and its inspiration is New York City women,  their boldness and femininity.  Word has it that Catherine Deneuve wears it as does our own New York City woman Editor in Chief Michelyn Camen (good enough for me!) The elegant floral with notes of raspberry and blackcurrant enhanced the Raspberry Macaron.

I was very impressed with Annick Goutal's extensive  body, bath and candle line, which was new to me. There is a Noel perfumed candle and a scented diffuser available for the Holidays, which is a joy to experience as the blending of citrus and pine is sublime. If you live in or are visiting New York City you must stop by this bijou of a boutique, and experience the beauty of the fragrances, the exquisite décor and lovely sales associates.

  • It was a lot of fun reading about Sniffapalooza and especially about the visit to the Annick Goutal boutique. I love their perfumes! My favorite is Eau de Charlotte, which I wear often. I have never been to Sniffapalooza. I am is the US.

  • I have never attended Sniffapalooza.. . .sniffle. . .sniffle. . .this particular event sounds like SO much fun!!!

My favorite AG is Encens Flamboyant. It’s one of my favorite perfumes! I don’t think there’s anything in the entire Annick Goutal line that I don’t at least appreciate, like or love. I look forward to visiting the shop next time I’m in NYC!!!! Thanks for the draw and the vicarious pleasure of this post. 🙂

  • I love the new cologne versions of Neroli and Vetiver. Never attended Sniffapalooza! Thank you for the draw!

  • I’ve never attended Sniffapalooza and sadly I have not tried an AG yet – but I really want to try La Violette and Eau D’Hadrien! Thanks for the draw – I’m a US reader!

  • AG is iconic. Such a cool opportunity to dive into the nuance and history of a house. Neroli is a beautiful tribute to the raw material and probably my favorite. i have never attended Sniffapalooza, but it’s bucket list worthy!! USA

  • I’ve never attended a Sniffapalooza, but I have gone through several bottles of Eau de Charlotte. I even hunted down the elusive EDP version from Europe many years ago, and then realized that I actually prefer the EDT version because it has less fruit and more dusty cocoa. Myrrhe Ardente, Musc Nomade, and Le Chevrefeuille are some other favorites. Thanks and happy holidays!

  • I like the Goutal line a lot, probably love the line, and choose Petite Cherie often, although that could change – I really want to try Nuit Etoilee this Christmas. I hope to go the Goutal next time in NY. I have not been to Sniffapalooza (although I have been to perfume meet-ups in Chicago). I live in the US; thanks for the draw.

No faves – simply love ALL scents…been this way since the 80“s 🙂 Not able to attend Sniffa – so we read and read and READ!! lol!! Thank you for the article and the draw!

  • I have never attended Sniffapalooza, but it sounds great! My first Annick Goutal was Les Nuits d’Hadrien, which I still reach for most often, but I also have Mandragore Pourpre and a vintage bottle of Heure Exquise. Love these too! I visited the NYC boutique not long after it opened and really enjoyed discovering Encens Flamboyant. This line really appeals to me. Thank you for a chance at the prize! I do live in the U.S.

  • this must have been such fun day. I have also bookmarked Financier Pattisserie for future visit. I am glad I own Eau d’Hadrien and Sables from the list. Sables is amazing and those who like ELDO The Afternoon of a Faun will also love Sables. thanks for the wonderful draw. I am in the US, more specifically, NY

  • Recently, I very much enjoy Petite Cherie. Thank you for this draw! So exciting. I have not attended Sniffapalooza, but am planning on attending next year. Sounds so exciting!

  • My favorite Goutal is Les Nuits d’Hadrien but I really like several others. I wish I had been to Sniffa but it isn’t in my neck of the woods. I’m in the U.S. thank you for the draw.

  • My favorite is Neroli, and I would love to attend Sniffapalooza sometime in the near future! I am in the US, thank you.

My favorite Goutal is Petite Cherie (lovely!); I have not had the pleasure of attending a Sniffapalooza but it sounds like a divine experience! I am in the US and thanks to AG for the draw.

  • Grand Amour is my favorite, especially for this time of year. I think there might be a balsam note there, plus myrhh, that I love in the cooler weather. I live on the wrong coast (the west) of the US to enjoy Sniffapalooza in NYC, but it sounds like great fun.

  • My favorite is Neroli and I have a few more on my list for sampling . Have not yet attended a Sniffapalooza event, but I joined the mailing list so I will soon!
I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love lOVE Encens Flamboyant, and am dying to try so many others in her line. I’ve never been to a Sniffapalooza – I live in L.A., and rarely get to NYC these days. (I gather there was one in L.A. at some poiint, but I only heard afterwards. There were tears.)

These pairings are fascinating & drool-worthy.

  • I’ve never attended Sniffapalooza, but I wish we had something similar in Chicago! This latest one looks delicious!

It’s very difficult to choose my favorite Annick Goutal fragrance. I love Eau du Sud in summer, and Encens Flamboyant in winter, but I think my very favorite might be Mandragore. I wear it in spring, summer, and autumn.

  • Good idea!
    Combine Goutal and pastrery!!
I use Ninfeo Mio and La Violette
    Letme think…
    fig biscuits with lemon cream
    And
And homemade cupcake with and intense aromatized violet blac tea
    Ummm

  • My favorite AG is definitely Songes, and I’ve sadly never attended Sniffapalooza- hopefully that will change someday.
    I’m in the US.

  • I do get the newsletters about Sniffapalooza but have not experienced it yet. However, when it comes to experience, Eau de Hadrien is my breath of fresh air. Love its fresh, bracing, natural citrus aroma.

  • It sounds like a wonderful event. I wish I could have been there. So sad about Annick Goutal. I never heard that she had breast cancer. So tragic. I have several AGs in my collection, but my favorite is Nuits de Hadrian on my husband.

  • My favorite is Ambre Fetiche- an amazing amber – beautiful!
And thank you for recounting this lovely event .
I love all the Sniffapalooza events ! Thanks to Karen and Karen!
And thank you for this opportunity.

  • I love this house-they seem to have such respect for their customers, and they created such beautiful scents. Can you imagine being so ill and having the courage to continue to make Ce Soir ou Jamais? Bobbles my mind.
My favorite-maybe Tubereuse. I have bought and used about 4 bottles of Nuit Etoilee this year-what a beautiful scent. Thanks for the great writing, and the beautiful photos.

I wish there was a Sniffapalooza held in California, they sound wonderful. I wear Songes most often of all the AG’s.

    Thanks!

  • My favorite is Les Nuits d’Hadrien. I have never attended a Sniffapalooza.
I am in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

  • I love Le Chevrefeuille. It makes me so happy.

I have never experienced a Sniffapalooza, but I have enjoyed running around San Francisco during the events that Tama organized. Oh, what fun that was!!

  • Thank you for this article and images. I have never attended the sniffapaloosa and I would love to visit Annik Goutal….one day. The website is beautiful, their packaging is gorgeous.
Out of the ones I’ve tried, I adore Eau de Charlotte because it does black currant like no other. Beautiful.

  • My AG faves are Le Chevrefeuille and L’Heure Exquise. I went to the first 3-4 Sniffas and had a lot of fun. Thanks!

  • Donna Spiegel says:

Hello, I have never had the opportunity to attend Sniffapalooza. That would be loads of fun for me. Love, love, love fragrance… 🙂
My first Annick Goutal was Eau d’Hadrien. What a lovely perfume, bright and citrusy and delightful. I actually bought the book, I was so intrigued by the perfume. Didn’t quite finish reading it yet (I tend to bounce around books), but none the less, it lead me to such a great read, which I never would have found the book, had it not been for the fragrance.
I’m in the US and hope I’m lucky! thank you for the draw opportunity.

  • Lovely event! Perfume and desserts sound like a marvelous combination. My favorite Annick Goutal perfume is Un Matin d’Orage; with its ginger, nectarine, and white floral notes and Japanese garden inspiration, I wonder if it would pair well with ginger or peach mochi. I’ve never attended Sniffapalooza but hope to in the future. Thank you for the giveaway and Happy Holidays!

  • I went to Sniffapalooza few years ago and it was lots of fun. I hope to go again soon.
My fav AG are : L’heure exquise, Songe and I absolutely LOVE Mon Parfum Cheri, par Camille.

    Happy holidays!

  • I have read about sniffaplalooza on this blog before and hope to go for Spring Fling. I am hungry just reading this. My favorite from Annick Goutal is definiely Sables although madrogore is close behind

  • My favorite Annick Goutal is Gardenia Passion. I also like Tubereuse. I’ve never been to a Sniffapalooza but would love to go! Thank you for the giveaway! Have a fabulous holiday season!
