Elements Showcase August 2012 Wrap-Up: A Raw Summer in NYC + Best in Show Draw

The fourth version of Elements Showcase the curated trade show for all thing fragrant just wrapped up after two days August 20-21, 2012 in NYC. As the only real US show of its kind, organizers Frederick Bouchardy, Ulrich Lang, and Jeffrey Lawson continue to provide an American alternative to the European trade shows with a New York City attitude.

The stars of this edition were raw ingredients. There were two separate workshops sponsored by Robertet celebrating 160 years of the rose. The centerpiece of both workshops was the conversations the invited perfumers had about using a new Robertet rose ingredient called Rose Petals Natural. Over the two workshops two Robertet perfumers, Olivia Jan and Jerome Epinette were joined by three indie perfumers Mandy Aftel of Aftelier Perfumes, Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co. and Anne McClain of MCMC Fragrances. This was a fascinating study in how five perfumers choose to use a raw ingredient. Mr. Epinette knew he wanted to create a fragrance around it and the result is Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme. Ms. Ethier told how it was the necessary final piece to her Rose Boheme as it added a rose which would pop against the dark patchouli base. All five perfumers exemplified how a great ingredient can be used to enhance their personal creativity.

The raw materials theme continued in a workshop, sponsored by Perfumer & Flavorist Magazine, on Tuesday where a panel passed out a number of raw ingredients for the audience to try. Perfumers Ralf Schwieger of Mane, Yosh Han of Yosh Olfactory Sense, and Kevin Verspoor of Drom along with Gillian Bleimann of Berje and Pierre Hellivan of Vigon International passed around many raw materials for the audience to experience. My take-home lesson is I am never going to open a bottle of Valerian root extract in my house. It turned our corner of the venue floor into a smelly gym locker. This was the rawest of the ingredients I would encounter this weekend.

Both of the Robertet workshops and the Perfumer & Flavorist Magazine panel showed that despite all of the regulatory pressures facing the perfume industry the artists who make perfume have imaginations which outpace even the most stringent regulator.

What the Elements Showcase is really about is what these talented people do with these ingredients. Here is the list of my Best of Show awards.

Best of Show: Celine Verleure brought all four of her Olfactive Studio fragrances and this was the first time for almost all of the US based perfume lovers to try these. As you know in my reviews I was already a big fan but I think Mme Verleure made some new ones. I just hope she strikes a deal for a US source of these amazing perfumes in time for the fifth one to be carried here. The perfumer’s initials for number five; OC.

Favorite New Fragrance (to me): Eight & Bob is a fragrance with a story so cool that if it isn’t true it oughta be. The key ingredient is a plant called Andrea which is harvested in the Andes in December and January. I’m not so sure about this but what I do know is Eight & Bob is an incredibly elegant men’s fragrance that completely surprised and delighted me.

Best Upcoming Fragrance (tie): There were three new fragrances that are coming out over the next couple of months and all three of them have me awaiting their arrival: Frapin Speakeasy, Bond No. 9 Manhattan, and Andrea Maack Coal. Each of these feel like they are going to be standout additions to their respective lines.

Delayed Gratification Award: If there is one line I have been waiting to finally have in my hands it is the expanded Agonist line. The original two entries, Liquid Crystal and The Infidels along with four new ones; Black Amber, Onyx Pearl, Vanilla Marble, and Arctic Jade. Ever since trying these over a year ago I have been waiting for these to come out and I am not disappointed.

Best News: The Fragrance Foundation that Independent perfumers can now join for $500/year. The Fragrance Foundation also announced that there will be a second edition of the Indie FiFi Award which will be presented at the January 2013 Elements Showcase. Forms for both of these exciting new developments are available on The Fragrance Foundation website.

Most Unique New Fragrance Maker: Alli Darling and Obi Kaufmann of Juniper Ridge travel around in a white Econoline van with a repurposed whiskey still wild harvesting plants and distilling them down as they harvest. This kind of DIY perfumery is fascinating to experience there is an authentic raw quality to their fragrances and it can be a little off putting but if it clicks with you it is probably because you can smell the authenticity.

Favorite Line from the Panels: When asked for a story about rose Jerome Epinette told of standing next to a rose farmer and asking him how he knew they were ready to harvest. The farmer told him, by taste, he would bite into a petal and when it had the right amount of bitterness them it was time to harvest.

Shouldn’t You Have A Booth Award: Hilde Soliani was busy exploring and sharing her fragrances with those of us who have loved them in the past. She sprayed me with one of her upcoming releases that was meant to smell of rose and plastic. It was amazing and I can’t wait for her to release it.

Best Cupcakes: The perfume inspired cupcakes from Stella’s Sweet Shoppe in conjunction with the cupcake inspired perfume line by Gerald Ghislain called Alice & Peter. There was a rose water chocolate cupcake that was divine.

Last but not least the family of fellow writers who I also got to spend time with as even though I only see them in person once or twice a year we all share a passion for perfume which makes us seem like old friends.

Thanks to the generosity of Celine Verleure we have eight full sample sets of all four Olfactive Studio fragrances. To be eligible just leave a comment about the most interesting thing you read in this wrap-up. We will draw eight winners on August 26, 2012.

We announce the winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so Like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilled perfume.

  • The most interesting thing is the names of some of the new fragrances.I know you can’t judge by name alone but they certainly sound interesting, especially Coal!

  • These guys, Alli Darling and Obi Kaufmann of Juniper Ridge, I want their life. That would be a dream come true to me, beoing a gypsy distiller. Glad someone’s doing it.

  • Agonist has always intrigued me. I hope we will be able to buy the perfumes without forking over for those fab bottles.

I seriously want one of those cupcake bottles!

  • I read so many great reviews on olfactive studio that I am excited it will be available here in the US
I learned about this line on CaFleureBon and really want to try them
I loved hearing about perfumers like yosh, Charna Ethier , Jerome Epinette and ralf Schwieger amidst all the raw materials
but I think the best news is that the FIFI foundation is going to try to make it a level playing field for indie perfumers who can’t afford the regular dues which I would imagine are thousands of dollars
Great wrap up lots of tasty tidbits

  • Oh how I wish I could go to NYC
You made the elements showcase come alive a distillery on wheels and natural ingredients everywhere
Vanilla marble and Andrea Maack coal got my attention
This gives me hope that the future of perfumery isn’t in cheap synthetic celebrity scents
Farmers biting roses to determine if they are ready to be harvested for perfume …loved that!
I have a sample of olfactive studio chamber noire and want more
I hope I win the sample set!

“Alli Darling and Obi Kaufmann of Juniper Ridge travel around in a white Econoline van with a repurposed whiskey still wild harvesting plants and distilling them down as they harvest.” it’s just awesome i love it.

  • I’m so happy to see the use of new raw ingredients and the comeback of rose. I haven’t seen many rose based fragrances being released in the last 12 months in the niche market, so I’m happy to read that this beautiful note hasn’t been forgotten completely. I’m very keen to try Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme when it comes out.

Thanks for the draw! The sample set sounds lovely.

  • Ah, the comment by the rose farmer about how he knew when it was time to harvest! I loved that.

  • Eight and Bob sounds interesting to me. I’d like to hear the whole story. Harvested from the Andes? a plant called Andrea? Wow.

  • I found that” the Robertet workshops and the Perfumer & Flavorist Magazine panel showed that despite all of the regulatory pressures facing the perfume industry the artists who make perfume have imaginations which outpace even the most stringent regulator” very interesting and hopeful

Eight and Bob are interesting too

  • I liked that there were perfume inspired cupcakes from Stella’s Sweet Shoppe and also there was a cupcake inspired perfume line, too.

I’d love to try the Olfactive line, thanks!

  • Oh how I wish I could join you at Elements! However since I am looking for the perfect rose scen I ound the most interesting the Robertet invitation to the perfumers to create a perfume based on rose petals natural. All three perfumers chosen are my favorite and would love to try their creations! Ah and the cupcaces look extremely yummy!!!

  • Scented Memories says:

I was reading a few days ago about all the exhibitors and the perfumes from Andrea Maack and Alice&Peter caught my attention. A really interesting and different approach on perfumery! Also the Olfactive Studio fragrances smell divine!

  • How to figure out when to harvest roses. How different do the different varieties taste and how similar is their bitterness level when ripe?

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Interesting to learn that there is a plant that is called Andrea. Now I am curious how Eight & Bob is going to be.

    Thank you

  • “Hilde Soiliani was busy exploring and sharing her fragrances with those of us who have loved them in the past. She sprayed me with one of her upcoming releases that was meant to smell of rose and plastic.”………would like to try this one, I´ve heard Hilde has made a few very interesting scents. thanks!

  • Queen Cupcake says:

It sounds like Elements was a really fun and fascinating event. I loved Jerome Epinette’s anecdote about the rose farmer. Thanks for the draw!

  • Love this! Thanks so much for the article. I’m so happy Agonist has released bottles that don’t cost $1,000 each. 🙂 And would love to try those HdP cupcake fragrances. So many new fragrances – love it!

  • I was glad to hear Celine has a new fragrance in books. Also Frapin’s new fragrance.

    Thank you for the updates!

  • Loved the story of the “ripe”rose. Perfectly logical! Thanks for the informative review.

  • The most interesting thing? Tasting the rose petals to judge the optimum time for picking! The cupcake paragraph also highlighted the parallel of food and perfume.

  • Add me to the list of those who find the ripe rose tasting very interesting. The whole experience sounds really fascinating; thanks for sharing the overview.

  • Very excited about the Fragrance Foundation bringing indie perfumers into its fold and providing more recognition to them! Very well deserved and a good thing for the fragrance industry as a whole.

Also, really fascinated by Juniper Ridge and their DIY aesthetic.

    Thank you for the draw!

  • What a cool way to spend a weekend! And I cannot believe that valerian was one of the raw ingredients..that stuff is VILE! Thank you for the draw.

  • The most interesting thing I’d read was about Juniper Ridge. I’d heard of them before, but hadn’t known that they traveled around distilling them as they harvested.

  • I like how the farmer bites the rose petals to see if they’re ready! Thanks for the great draw!

  • I liked the story of the ready to be picked rose petals. It’s a nice to know inside look. Thanks for the draw!

  • Great draw for the opportunity to sniff the Olfactive Studio creations! I found the strength of the Vetiver quite amazing. I also loved the Juniper Ridge DIY. I would love to be along with them for a week or two and witness them creating.

  • It’s exciting that The Fragrance Foundation will be offering memberships to indie perfumers at such a good rate! I also loved the rose story.

  • As a gardener/backyard farmer, I can identify with the notion of a ripe rose! Am excited to have the opportunity to possibly try Celine’s work!
    xo

btw – I love that one has to do basic arithmetic to validate a comment. Works the other side of the brain for a hot minute!

  • farawayspices says:

What an amazing sounding exhibition! The part about the valarian root made me laugh. Not long after I finished college I worked at a health food store. The shock of that aroma has stayed with me, but oddly I remember the way the stinky feet smell combined with the general herby smell of the bulk herb department with a certain degree of nostalgia.

  • Perfume inspired cupcakes? I had no idea, even though of course I am aware of food-inspired perfumes. Interesting it works both ways.

  • I’m quite surprised that the Elements show is the only one of its kind in the US. I will need to do my best to get to the show when it is next in town. I’ve been very curious about the Olfactive Studio fragrances, ever since you initially piqued my interest in Chambre Noir. I’d love to get a chance to try them!

  • What a great offering, since I already own 3 of the Olfactive Studio fragrances I can only say I LOVE them.

  • Nice wrap up!
Is it me or does the idea of fragrances that smell like cupcakes by a niche perfumer sound like its about business not about the art

I love HDP but was really disappointed by scents of departure
    Cute packaging but boring scents
I really enjoyed reading about the sublime scent of the robertet rose petals and the stinky scent of valerian

  • It was exciting to read this birds-eye view of everything happening. Can’t help by trying to imagine what it would be like to be there. I was most interested in finding out your best of the show, Mark (I always learn a lot from your reviews!), so I am glad there’s a way to try these out.

  • I really like Agonist’s Infidels so it vas very interesting to read thet there’s four new ones in the line. I’d just love to try Black Amber especially.

  • Thanks for the draw! I think (like many other commenters) that the story about the roses and the right moment to pick them 🙂

  • “Eight & Bob” has to be the most memorably charming name of a new perfume house. I love how quirky it it, and if that’s the sort of creativity that went into the name I really want to test the perfume.

  • There were tons of tidbits which struck me as very, very cool but fresh off a camping trip I’d have to say the Juniper Ridge folks traveling around with a whiskey still wild harvesting plants for their fragrances! that sounds like an amazing life!

  • It’s easy to forget about the regulations facing the fragrance industry. It is interesting that they had a panel to discuss how to work within the parameters set by regulations and still maintain some creativity. Design (of all types) is all about working with constraints.

  • Really fun summary to read – it´s hard to choose between the mysterious Andrea of the Andes flower, the Econoline van mobile still, and the rose-petal biting. In the end I think the rosewater-chocolate cupcakes is an idea I´m going to um, appropriate. As always, thanks for the draw!

  • I thought it was interesting to learn of Hilde Soliani’s upcoming release that smells like rose and plastic, and I am very interested! Thanks for the article, and the draw.

  • Agonist fragrance are great! I’ve tried samples few months ago. But the most interesting thing I read in this wrap-up is about Hilde Soliani: I love her! She’s amazing and innovative!

  • I am excited about rose petals natural!!! I’m sure all the perfumers mentioned had great fun being given the opportunity to work with a new rose extraction. I wish I could experience that

  • Borko Boris says:

A perfume with a note that I have not heard of until now!? I can not wait to try it. Andrea sounds intriguing.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • It was interesting to know about Juniper Ridge, I have been buying their products for a few years now. & love them!

  • I think the ingredient called Rose Petals Natural is really interesting and I’m always looking for a good rose!

    Thank you!

  • I loved reading all about the use of raw materials. The mix of synthetic and raw fascinates me!

  • Thinking of an old re-purposed whiskey still in an Econoline van now making fragrances makes me smile!

    Thank you for the draw!
