DSH Perfumes Aoud Blanc and DSH Perfumes Oudh Noir Review + Oud In Chiaroscuro Draw

When the nights grow long as shadows and cold sets up house, the waft of warm, enveloping perfumes can beckon as deliciously as a mug of cocoa. DSH Perfumes Aoud Blanc Heirloom Elixir #2 and DSH Perfumes Oudh Noir Heirloom Elixir #3, collectively named “Oud in Chiaroscuro”, (representing the artistic term of the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition)  are just the ticket.

The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame by Georges de la Tour, 1640

There’s an initial rustic coziness in DSH Perfumes Oudh Noir that makes me think of glowing embers in the fireplace, wind rattling the tree branches in melodramatic warning of encroaching cold. Out of the bottle, it is smoky tonic, warming and spicy. The oud is apparent but not aggressive, its medicinal woodiness melding perfectly with the profusion of arid notes that follow: sandalwood, with its violin scratchiness, the smell of old cedar chests, a rich, earthy tobacco. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is brilliant at roasted notes, and the crackly smell of firewood, tobacco and oud marry perfectly. You could settle down with a dog-eared book and comforter and breathe contentedly. But wait until the middle stage.

Oudh Noir abandons the hearth fire to light one in the bedroom. Civet and castoreum positively growl their way out of the bottle and a rubber note prowls around the edges. Resins and the bitter chocolate of patchouli hum quietly in the background while leather slowly brandishes her whip. And yet, just when it seems Oudh Noir is going to go all S&M, the composition softens, and flower and spice notes peek through: carnation, saffron, and toasty hints of cinnamon and clove. Over time, the roasted wood, spices and oud mellow, and Oudh Noir becomes downright snuggly.

Notes: Rubber accord, Oude/agarwood, saffron absolute, Atlas Cedarwood, Australian sandalwood, black leather (accord), brown oakmoss, castoreum, civet, East Indian patchouli, frankincense (olibanum), Indonesian vetiver, Mysore sandalwood, tobacco absolute, carnation, cinnamon bark, clove bud, damask rose absolute, grandiflorum jasmine, labdanum, aldehydes, bergamot, holy basil, lime peel, silver fir, leather, musk.

Where DSH Perfumes Oud Noir is tiger sauntering around the boudoir, DSH Perfumes Aoud Blanc is a Persian pussycat curled up on a satin pillow. The opening is all marshmallow-y rose and peach. The peach dominates, getting a juicyfruit tang of bergamot. The oud is noticeable and adds a dry counterpoise to the fluffy opening notes, lending a wine-like savor. Sandalwood – sleeker and more lowkey than in Oudh Noir – comes forward. The woodiness is accompanied by an unexpected, delightful note of beeswax that adds a lighthearted touch.

But while flowers and fruit command the first stages, suede is the heart of Aoud Blanc. The peachy, rosy notes hover, joined by a pinch of powdery ambrette, and soft greyish suede makes its way into the center of the fragrance. Iris becomes apparent, and the dusty odor of saffron. A trill of jasmine joins the suede accord; soapy, breezy, girlishly sweet. The longer Aoud Blanc wears, the more the floral and suede notes take precedence. This is a perfume of early Spring, lovely to wear when you need a hit of April.

Both DSH Perfumes Aoud Blanc and DSH Perfumes Oudh Noir are delicious, but they are also lovely foils for each other. Layer them together (Aoud Blanc on top), and they turn almost gourmand: the Aoud Blanc brings a vanillic quality it doesn’t have on its own; Oudh Noir lends its sister a delicious savoriness. Together, they are cocoa for the soul on an unkind night.

  • Would love to try either of these luxurious creations I know Dawn pours her heart and soul into every one of her creations

  • Both of these creations sound fantastic, although I would lean slightly towards the noir. Not gonna lie, the S&M description sells me 😉

  • Both fragrances sound delicious and i would love to test them, especially the Noir version, i can see a lot of awesome notes in the pyramid. Thanks for the chance, i am in the EU.

Dawn is one of my favorite perfumers on the planet. Aoud Noir has peaked my interest since it’s release.
I will enter the draw, but one way or the other, I definitely will sample.
Thank you Dawn and Cafleurebon for the opportunity!!
    I am in the USA.

  • These are interesting dual release, with oudh noir aimed at those who like their oud strong while oudh blanc is for those who prefer cleaner interpretations of ouds. I will choose oudh noir in extrait and oudh blanc in edp version. I am in US.

Loved the description on both and the thought of blending both seems really interesting. Portugal, EU.

Lauryn, I always enjoy your reviews. They always have a numerous quotes that I savor… ” cocoa for the soul on an unkind night” and “When the nights grow long as shadows and cold sets up house” were my favorites tonight. Aoud Blanc was my favorite from the review, and I do love that the feminine form of the word “oud”was used for the light half of the chiaroscuro. I would choose this in Extrait if I was so lucky to win. I am in the USA. Thank you for the lovely review and very generous draw!

  • Thanks for another lovely review, Lauryn! I love the contrast of these two new fragrances of Dawn. I liked your description that ‘Oud Noir is tiger sauntering around the boudoir, DSH Perfumes Aoud Blanc is a Persian pussycat curled up on a satin pillow.’ I’d love to win Aoud Blanc and sample Aoud Noir. Thanks for this opportunity. – California, USA

  • I love Dawn’s fragrances! After reading the lovely article by Lauryn, I would love to try Aoud Blanc. Thank you for the chance. I live in the US.

  • Both of these sound wonderful. I’d like 1/4 extrait of the Oudh Noir and the 3 ml EDP of the Aoud Blanc . I love the images that Lauryn creates. Thanks for the draw. I’ in the USA

  • Your descriptions couldn’t be more evocative. I would love to try any of these new fragrances by Dawn, and I believe my heart is leaning more towards the “smoky tonic” (yum) of Oudh Noir – though Aoud Blanc sounds equally delightful! Sounds like the perfect pair; yin and yang. And in the depth of a Canadian winter, I would definitely benefit form a “hit of April” 🙂
Thank you for the chance! I live in Canada.

Interested to see DSH travel into the world of Oud (though I suppose I have smelled it in some of her other compositions). I love the sound of Oud Noir–the “violin scratchiness” of woods, the feel of burning embers, as well as animal notes unfurling in the mid stage all sound great. Wonderfully described! The Blanc sounds good too–I love to see Oud paired with more unexpected notes than just a dark rose–but if I were to win, I’d love the larger bottle be the Noir and the 3ml Blanc. Thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the US.

What a beautifully written review! Layering advice is a spot on. I watched Dawn’s live stream about new Heirloom Elixirs and from the overwhelming positive feedback I am more than excited. Dawn is my most favorite perfumer in the world and I am not too familiar with her oudy compositions even though I adore this note. Since these fragrances are created out of different oud materials it would be particularly interesting to experience them side by side and together. Notes in Aoud Blanc are even more than I could wish. I would be very very happy to win and thanks for the chance. I am from Germany!

  • One of the most engaging and evocative reviews I have read lately. Beautifully written, Lauryn!

Both Noir and Blanc sound positively outstanding. While I love the iris, rose as well as suede notes of Oud Blanc, I am more attracted by the woodiness and general sense of darkness in Oud Noir.

If I were to win I would love the Oud Noir extrait and Oud Blanc edp sample. I live in the US.

    Thank you!

  • I am very intrigued by a noir and blanc duo released together. Lauryn is such a wonderful reviewer- her descriptions are so specific that I feel the sensation while reading, like the dryness of the sandalwood note having a violin scratchiness, or that the civet and castoreum growl their way out of the bottle. I’d love the chance to layer these two as Lauryn describes, too! I’d prefer the Noir in extrait and Blanc in edp. I live in the US.

  • The both sound gorgeous. I’m particularly drawn to Oudh Noir because of the woody notes. But I love the description of Blanc because of the saffron note. I love the idea of layering them and that it creates a gourmand feel to it.
    I live inthe USA.

  • Interesting review. I’m still relatively knew to Oud, but I enjoy how versatile and creative it is. The woodiness of Oud Noir sounds like something up my alley. I’d love the chance to check out the extrait version of Oud Noir and the EDp sample of Oud Blanc. Thanks for throwing this giveaway. Cheers from CT

  • Both sound beautiful and they are full of great notes. I haven’t been able to try any DSH Parfum yet so I hope I can try these two. Thanks for the giveaway. Enjoyed the article. Oud Noir extrait and EDP for the blanc

Lauryn’s review truly made me want to layer these fragrances this winter. I loved the wintery image that Lauryn suggested. The smokey and rubbery notes of Oudh Noir sound perfect for the upcoming winter, with maybe a few unkind nights to come.
I would choose the extrait version of Oudh Noir and the edp version of Aoud Blanc.
I live in the USA, Massachusetts.

  • Both of these sound intriguing. The Aoud Noir sounds like me more sexy and dark of the two, while the Aoud Blanc the bright sweet sister in the pair. Based of the descriptions I’d have to say the Noir is more my style. The smoky spicy opening and the dry down sound great, but those hearts note scare me a bit. With that said I think I’d prefer Aoud Blanc in the 1/4 oz bottle and only the smaller sample of Aoud Noir. USA, Arizona

  • Dawn’ fragrances never fail to impress me. Both sound exquisite and beautiful. Aoud Noir seems to be the darker one, so it suits me more, but I’m sure Aoud Blanc is equally beautiful.
Lauryn always makes great descrptions. Aoud Noir- a tiger and Aoud Blanc a persian pussycat curled up on a satin pillow is great example of inspiring writing.
Would love to try the Oud in Chiaroscuro Holiday sample set.
Thank the you for the article and generous draw.

I have always loved DSH’s approach to the art of scent and I have been trying to hone in on my favorites. Your review is beautifully realized. While I am newly enamoured with Iris and powdery scents (Blanc), in the more recent past I have been more attracted to the Noir of warmth and spice. These Ouds seem like the perfect representation of both. I would probably prefer 1/4 oz of the Oudh Noir and 3ml of Oudh Blanc, though I would be thrilled with either! Please count me in if I am not too late! Thank you!

Your review is exquisite and I would love to be included in this draw if I am not too late! Your review is so beautiful. I have been trying to hone in on some favorite scents and while for many years I was very attracted to warmth and spice, then more recently I was surprised at how much I love many “Blanc” fragrances with Iris or powdery aspects. Oudh Blanc and Oudh Noir seem to represent the best of both worlds. I would probably prefer 1/4 oz. of Oudh Noir and 3ml. Oudh Blanc, but would be happy with either!
    Thank you.

  • Both of these sound amazing! Oud Noir is the one that really spoke to me the most while reading this review. This comment peaked my interest even more “You could settle down with a dog-eared book and comforter and breathe contentedly. But wait until the middle stage.” While reading I also wondered if these could be layered and I am glad that Lauryn expressed that they could be. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US! 🙂
