Libby Patterson LBO Organics

Profile: I grew up in northeastern Ohio. When I was very young my father built a home on a lake. I love water, and grew up at the pool at the country club, and on the lake in my back yard. We summered on a larger lake in Michigan that always had beautiful water lilies blooming. I walked every day in the woods, and valleys, exploring the wildlfowers. I was very interested in how to plant my first herb gardens by an early age and was influenced by watching my mother and father’s gardens. It never occurred to me that one day I would become a perfumer but I was drawn to the herbs, and their folklore histories, the flowers, and all nature’s intelligence.

In 1975 I began studying the Egyptian pyramids, and found information there, in the meditative state that sparked my interest to study more in depth, about perfume. Then in 1978 I met the people from Findhorn and went to a lecture about Rudolph Steiner, found Jeanne Rose’s Herbal and it was at the time THE only modern book out on the subject. By then I had begun experimenting. It would be in the mid eighties I took a class with Avraham Sand, who suggested we keep notes on our patient results with the essences. I was doing quite a bit of massage and healing work then. Thought it was a great idea, and also started to treat friends, and develop a client roster, for simple perfumes, mostly love potions, attractants. Meanwhile I had a fashion career going, and eventually I decided beauty was really about what is penetrating us, under our skin, in the form of essences, flowers, and smells, through the cellular, inhalation and in the etheric body.

In 1992 I moved from the east coast to Taos, New Mexico. My long career in fashion drew me there, and I stayed to start Angelic Aromas. With thirteen products, featuring all the chakras: root, sex, solar, heart, throat, third eye and crown, plus angel glow, mermaid’s relief, and a couple others, I launched, and within several months of success  I was found within the top 500 stores in the country, and discovered by Hollywood insiders. The company grew fast, and within a couple years I had to move first to Santa Fe, then San Francisco Bay Area to manage the day to day business distribution, which became key to being on the west coast where 90% of my clients were.

After my 10 year retrospective of the library of Angelic Aromas 500 formulations, in 2003 I finally started in a new way. Not from a price perspective, costing, but from a luxury perspective, allowing myself to create, using the most expensive ingredients, and making composed perfumes. Structurally everything changed for me, after that moment, and all the reins, leashes came off and now there was a deeper fuller opulence to everything. It felt right to me and my clients.

In 2005 I started to spend more time with clients in LA. By springtime in 2011, I was spending most of my time there, working on my "gratitude perfume project" educating people about the importance of organics, over synthetics, one for the health benefits, and two because it makes sense for preserving the heritage of our native aromatics.

I have been lucky to be granted access to many properties, all along the coast, and inland on large tracts of land, ranches, and land trusts to collect and harvest sustainably for my raw wild perfumes. I created additions to my product line that would give the international client access to the simple soliflore work, built around simple plants all people recognize, and also scent memories from the meadow, forest and ocean. I am always adding to my collection from the SLOWCOAST REGION highlighting local and native plant species.

On American Perfumery: I am able to use all my skill sets in art, fashion, botany, and business as an indie American and NATURAL perfumer. Each day I am able to contribute to people’s happiness by creating by hand, a scent memory, and the scent journey that is completely transformational even if just a simple lavender soliflore, or a rose medley flower water. The sky’s the limit for creativity, and I am a prolific designer and always composing.

White Flower on Red Earth by Georgia O'Keefe 1943

Favorite American Artist:   Without a doubt Georgia O’Keefe because of her intimate portraiture of flowers.  I love and live by her quote: “When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower.” Upon reflection I became the flower, and I capture that blossom of or spark of love inside of all of us in a perfume. I create time in bottle and aromatic aphrodisiacs, which still to this day is what I am known for and  what many of my clients want in a perfume.

  • Libby Patterson’s slow journey to the west coast and how her creativity and interest in many of the arts developed along the way is really interesting. I had not been aware of her work but find it quite fascinating. I would be interested in trying “LPO ORGANICS Soliflore Set, Purrrr, Taos Heart Opener and Young Buck”. US

  • I love hearing stories of people growing up spending time in the Great Lakes region. I would be pleased to own 5ml of Purrrrrrrr. I like your profiles page, live in the US. Thanks!

  • I just loved reading about all of the places she has been and the way she creates fragrances… I am just starting to venture into all natural/organic fragrances and I am very grateful to have read this article since I was not familiar with Libby Patterson’s work. I also love the quote by Georgia O’Keefe ( as well as Libby’s thoughts after reflecting on this quote… ) I would be honored and feel blessed to experience any of these creations but if I was to choose it would be Purrrr. Thank you so much for such a lovely article. I have liked the Profiles… page & I reside in the US.

  • I’m particularly fascinated by how she built relationships with various owners and businesses in order to have trusted access to the wild plants on various properties. I am Calfornian and I love the plants out here, so her dedication to harvesting and preparing fragrances from my beloved West Coast is truly appealing. Can I also say that, though I do not typically drink tea, I would love to have brunch and drink tea at her beach-front studio because it sounds delightful?

I choose Young Buck. I’m in the US.

  • It’s interesting how a childhood next to a lake and a fascination with Egypt led to a fragrant profession. Hooray for all these amazing West Coast perfumers! I’m in the US, and I would choose Young Buck. Thank you.

  • I love her choice of Georgia O’Keefe as her favorite artist, and I also love that she has a perfume inspired by the artist. I would love to try the sampler of the soliflores, Young Buck, Purrrr, and Taos Heart Opener. I am in the US, thank you!

  • I found it very interesting that Libby is greatly inspired by O’Keefe. It is not uncommon knowledge that O’Keefe’s floral paintings virtually draw viewers into them with their sexual symbolisms. I appreciate the connection Libby makes between that aspect and becoming the flower — that is, returning to the womb, and in Libby’s words, emerging – reborn as it were – as the fragrance, the essence.

I would love to try Young Buck; I reside in the US.

  • Whatever the 10 year retrospective of the library of Angelic Aromas 500 forumklations exactly is, I’d like to read more about that.

I would love a sampler of the LPO ORGANICS Soliflore Set, Purrrr, Taos Heart Opener and Young Buck. 🙂 USA

  • I have been intrigued by Libby Patterson’s methods and philosophy for awhile now and was excited to read more about her life’s journey.
I love when people trust their passions to lead them into their life’s work and then keep listening, growing and creating anew.
All of her generous offerings sound wonderful and I would love to smell a bit of everything so the LPO ORGANICS Soliflore Set, Purrrr, Taos Heart Opener and Young Buck sample set sounds purrfect!

  • I liekd the line “allowing myself to create, using the most expensive ingredients”. I’m intrigued at what the results of taking on such a method would be.
Thr LPO ORGANICS Soliflore Set, Purrrr, Taos Heart Opener andYoung Buck sample set sounds interesting to me, ty

  • I loved reading her journey to perfume- the story of her life that somehow wound its way t o this great passion shared by all of us here- from the pyramids to note pyramids, I guess. I’m in the US and would like to win Purrrrr.

  • Donna Spiegel says:

I think what I find most fascinating is Libby’s journey. She seems to be on a path that is taking her to where she currently is with her organic creations but it will still move to further and more beautiful places because she is guided by those spirits. That to me is most inspiring. I would love to try the PURRRR. Always enjoy an aphrodisiac :). Thank you for a wonderful read! Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • There is something fascinating about Libby being at the pyramids all the way back in 1975, and something popped into her mind while meditating that prompted her to study more about perfume. I’d like to win the Young Buck. USA

  • I love how she grew up on a lake in the MIdwest then journeyed to Taos, Santa Fe, East coast to West coast…taking in multiple climates and environs. Also from fashion to perfume. I have not met Libby or tried any of her perfumes. I would love to try the sampler of the LPO ORGANICS Soliflore Set, Purrrr, Taos Heart Opener and Young Buck, Thank you.

  • I find fascinating about Libby Patterson, that she loves the nature, and she likes the lakes and she use for her perfumes organic ingredients. My choice would be The Soliflore Set.
    I live in Europe.

  • I like how she lived besides a lake when she was a child, I think that was a really healthy and pleasant environment. My choice would be Taos Heart Opener.
    I live in Europe.

  • I love the organic fragrances. I find fascinating about Libby Patterson, that she really love her job, and I sure of it, that her works are wonderful. My choice would be Young Buck.
    I live in Europe.

  • What I’m left with from reading this is how Libby let her business take a “natural” growth path (the change in location to be near the majority of her clients, and expanding into more expensive materials and composed perfumes) and not try to swallow the world whole. I would love to try Young Buck, so that would be my pick.

Thank you for this feature! I was unaware of LPO. Also, thanks for the draw. I am in the US.

  • 551coastroad says:

What a beautiful story. I was just passing through and read the whole thing. Thanks for the article and profile.

  • I have so enjoyed reading this review about Libby’s work. I was most interested in how her creativity spans simply everything and as she says’ The Sky’s the limit” and perhaps not even then!
I would love to win the Landscape Collection 30 ml Taos Heart Opener. I am in the US

  • i always say the most interesting people come from Ohio. don’t know why… just is.

i very much enjoyed the unfolding of the healing journey, from massage therapist to etheric worker.

of course i champion anyone who has this level of commitment to organics; that Libby is allowed to harvest on land preserves and such is a great honor.

i would prefer a sampler of the LPO ORGANICS Soliflore Set, Purrrr, Taos Heart Opener and Young Buck ! 🙂

  • What an Artist!! Thanks so much for sharing this. I loved hearing Libby’s story of progression, almost an unpeeling journey..the physical locations, the mind explorations into her fragrant world.
I would love to win a sampler of the LPO ORGANICS Soliflore Set, Purrrr, Taos Heart Opener and Young Buck I am international.

  • I was fascinated by Libby ‘s evolution from massage and healing to aromatherapy and eventually perfumes. She proves that you carry with you and make use of everything you have learned and experienced in life! It was great to learn that she is working on passion projects and sharing her knowledge with others 🙂
I am in the US, have liked Cafleurebon’s profiles in American Perfumery and choose Young Buck. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love how Libby’s career evolved with her passion. I was the lucky recipient of Tara White Love Goddess and I can say that a good natural perfume can impart such a feeling of well being that ordinary perfumes simply can’t. This one seemed to be imbibed with magic from Libby’s hands! If I won …. hard choice, but I would try Taos Heart Opener. I am in the US.

  • Jennifer B in SF says:

Thank you for featuring Libby – an awesome talent! I would love to win Taos Heart Opener because it is a tribute to Georgia O’Keefe – my personal hero. Thanks!

  • Georgia O’Keefe is one of my absolute favorites too! I always love reading about journeys into perfume, and found Libby Patterson’s growth into perfume composition with her roots in healing bodywork and training in aromatherapy very interesting. And it’s cool that she creates such a wide variety of plant/scent-related items!

  • I so admire Libby’s spectacular bravery in following her heart to a good place. I believe her creations show she is a powerful force for good. It is interesting that she is attuned to the power of the moon. The super moon has been keeping me awake and changing my dreams. I would love to experience Taos Heart Opener. I am in the US.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

Libby’s story reminds me of the stories of many other perfumers that living close to nature really makes you want to create smells..it is clear Libby’s childhood in Ohio has played a major role in her becoming a perfumer. Another interesting thing i learnt is that Libby has been a successful businesswoman for quite a long time and perfumery is just her latest venture. for this draw, my choice is Purrr. Thanks so much for your generosity, Libby..i am in the US

  • what a brilliant review–aromatherapy/perfume is not like other arts in that there is tremendous power in scent–you by pass places in the brain that would otherwise alter your experience. Libby you have a remarkable background.

  • What a fantastic profile on a woman that I dearly love and admire so much! Libby is so in tune with her creative process and I love her attitude. So glad to have her out west, and Libby I will make it to #slowcoast. xoxo Thanks for the generous draw and yes I choose Purr….. I am in the US.

  • Libby is one of a kind! She has always been a trailblazer with her luscious, original, organic body products. She is also of the funniest and brightest people I have ever met! I love her LPO line and can’t wait to get more!

  • Thank you Michelyn for the amazing perfumer’s profile. It is so nurturing to read all of your readers comments. I loved seeing what each person might choose. I can see a trend here between the Taos Heart Opener, and the Young Buck. How delightful. Thank you again. Much Love, Libby

  • I admire Libby Patterson’ desire to learn new skills and the courage to take on the entrepreneurial challenges that called upon her. She had several successful businesses, sold them to pursue another area of interests and developed another business again. I’m not sure whether she would ‘settle down’ on crafting the perfumes but am sure I would embrace her Young Buck.
