CaFleureBon: June 7, 2011… Happy 53rd Birthday Prince + Let’s Party Like Its “1999” Draw

Happy Birthday, Prince Rogers Nelson/

KISS "1986"/ Ida Meister

Yes, peculiar little man, you get to live another day, because of this song, released in 1986.

[And “When Doves Cry”]

I’m a sucker for a great bass line- and this is it, beyond a doubt.

It also conjures up images of a plummy Julia Roberts grooving with her Walkman in her notorious Jacuzzi bubblebath penthouse scene from Pretty Woman.

Not hard to take at all, at all. ..

The perfect perfume to accompany all this would be Dior’s Original Poison [created by Edouard Flechier in 1985], purple by nature and synaesthesia, not to mention over-the-top , in- your- face [what the French might fondly term ”éblouissant “], not-for-wusses.

A bombshell, plain and simple- take-no-hostage fruity –floral that broke ground in its time, much like the will ‘o’ the wisp fey artist himself.

We all adore Klimt’s Kiss– but Franz von Stuck’s version of an erotic sphinx doling out a conflagratory. buss is pretty hot stuff; I think The Artist Formerly Known As would approve.

Is it warm in here?

Little Red Corvette "1983"/ Mark Behnke

There are so many songs by Prince which were part of the soundtrack to my life but Little Red Corvette was the one that really captured the hedonistic early 80’s. The slow keyboard buildup to the chorus and the blistering guitar solo created an indelible fusion of funk and rock n’ roll. When thinking about a fragrance that matches this I thought of one which was also red. Montale Red Vetyver shares the same hot buildup as Little Red Corvette as the grapefruit at the start adds the funk of pepper before finishing with a rock n’ roll kick of patchouli and cedar. Both the song and the fragrance have speed to burn. http://youtu.be/mDduqH5cciQ

When Doves Cry "1984"/ Mary Beth Devine

Now, I ask you – look at these people. Look at these people! Potential desertion (“How can you leave me standing? Alone in a world that’s so cold?”) Self doubt (“Maybe I’m just too demanding.”) Sharp criticism (“Maybe you’re just like me mother.”) Confrontation building to screams.“This is what it sounds like when doves cry.” Maybe, but perhaps it’s more accurately the sound that makes doves cry. Souls wracked by torrents of emotion and misperceptions, a little bit of “You’re just like…….when you do that.”  And there go the lessons of an upright life and the ‘dove’ cries over broken human spirits and potential.

http://youtu.be/ucZRore0-EE

Enter a Bond No 9 Scent of Peace. Did you know that lily of the valley, the starring note, is a symbol of the return of happiness? That it’s said that when Eve wept in the garden, her tears became the bells of the flower? Scent of Peace is a simple little thing in same way our thoughts about the bigger peace are – “Just sit and talk about it.” – “Disarm and verify.” – and the ever popular, “I’m your mother (aunt, etc) and I said I want it.” Currant provides tartness or piquancy to remind you the path to peace and serenity has its bumps, those dastardly little things that bring you up short. It weaves in and out never quite fading. The lily of the valley and the currant are laid on a base of musk and cedar. Humanity and strength perhaps?  Were Laurice Rahme and her cohorts sending a scented coded message in a bottle? It’s a rather linear composition-no feints and dodges, but maybe just a little sad. Sometimes the tartness overwhelms and the cedar fades too far into the background.  What happens then?

We, like our two players in the song, are left hoping for happiness, a good like, and doves that cease their crying.

Purple Rain "1984" and Love in Black by CREED/ Mary Beth Devine

 http://youtu.be/5l75skRMlXk

How can one not be intrigued by a purple rain? The shifting light, the wind, the impending drama of it all? “Never meant to cause you sorrow. I never meant to cause you any pain.”Violets and iris and their inherent powder notes open a melancholic work. The violets are sweet, but deceptively so. They dry and turn to dust – a bleak memory. The iris looms large – bulbs almost ripped from the earth.

The ‘classic’ blend recedes a bit to introduce rose – also dark to me, but long seen as a token of high esteem and close friendships. This is all  offset later by a flood of black currant – a berry both tart and sweet as is a relationship about to be upended or started anew. What people describe as a ‘doughiness’ throughout the scent mirrors the indecisiveness and malleabilityof one who “wants to be a leader, but…can’t seem to make up (his/her) mind”. It can speak of comfort and potential in the same breath.Cedar wood provides a base – strong, uncompromising. Is it enough grounding in the maelstrom? Perhaps.

It looms large, this fragrance, much as these violent purple rains do. The ones that toss us about and fling us into new dimensions both literally and figuratively. It makes me uncomfortable. I’m never sure where it’s going to take me. But then again, I could say the same about  Prince's Purple Rain.

Cream "1991" /Emmanuelle Varron

Prince is certainly one of the few singers who marked my path from teenage years to adulthood. At that time (the early 90’s), he was considered a huge star, one of the most appreciated and well known American singer in France. And I cannot forget that in 1990, he gave a series of concerts at the famous Parc des Princes in Paris, a few meters far from the place I was undergoing my High School Certificate. Of course, no way for my classmates and I to be at one of his concerts, as you definitely do not trifle with French Baccalaureat…"Cream" is one of my favorite Prince songs. Because its orchestration and rhythm  IS almost perfect, and matches  Prince’s sexy personality. I also love the clip, its choreography in full harmony with the music, the lyrics… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VzXO9GQZBc

The scent that I would link to that song?  "Cadjméré" (No. 18) from Parfumerie Generale. A very smooth, very sexy creation, that reveals on my skin coconut milk, rosewood, sandalwood bark, and vanilla notes. A real treat, as "Cream" can be…Joyeux anniversaire,  Prince!

Let’s Go Crazy! Take me with You (1985)/Jane Daly

Now is the time to take chances with your make up- you can even go crazy if you like! This summer we are seeing a strong eye or a bright lip. I have always been a lover of sexy eye make up. For some reason I feel more confident playing up my eyes and keeping my lip more neutral with a nice plumping lip gloss like Duwop Lip Venom or Lipfusion.

For a heavy sexy eye I love lining my eyes all the way around with black liner, keeping it on the waterline and tight lining for a sultry feline look. Loving my Urban Decay 24 7 eyeliner for this, as it holds up to hot summer heat like a pro! So, if you are feeling brave you can go totally Gaga! OR  style your makeup after  circa Prince 1985 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdEE5Ph4p3A

Raspberry Beret "1985"/Michelyn Camen

According to the Owner of Molinard Jean-Pierre Lerouge-Benard : “Ohhhh! Parfume de Habanita?! For me Habanita is a kind of mystery, a miracle to The Habanita woman? She has a strong personality yet she is very feminine; an exceptional woman, (by the way she can be a blonde, a redhead or a brunette) but the main point is that she unique…herself!”

Well my beloved Habanita has been reformulated as of 2007. So now "it’s the kind U find in a second hand (ebay)store and if it’s warm you shouldn’t wear much more". When the song was written in 1985,  when I met a cute guy "i would die 4 you", one  had a a Harley “who put me on the back of my bike And-a we went riding.” The Parents were shocked! http://youtu.be/-szMex5raS4  Under my self confident, sultry, uber feminine exerior, was a vulnerabilty  and trust of a young girl expressed through the top notes of orange blossom, raspberry, peach and bergamot; middle notes of lilac, orris root, jasmine, heliotrope, ylang-ylang and rose; base notes are leather, amber, musk, benzoin, vanilla, oakmoss and cedar.Orignially Habanita was created to flavor cigarettes… I smoked 2 packs a day.

But now the Habanita I know is  gone “No No NoNo No No."

  • The beautiful ones is my favorite Prince song (and I have many many favorites!!)  It reminds me of someone I know.

Let's Go Crazy is my favorite Prince song. It reminds me of being at one of his concerts and the audience going completely nuts when the smoke cleared and there he was, sitting naked in a bathtub on the stage. I'll never forget that concert. I couldn't remember where I had parked my car so I had to wait until the entire parking lot cleared to find it!

  • LOVE this post and LOVE Prince!  It's so difficult  to choose a Prince tune I love most… I just love the entire album for Purple Rain and a live tape (bootleg; I'm dating myslef… tape?)  I got from a friend in college. 🙂    Thanks for this — it's fab!
    oxo,
    Dawndear

  • I have to pick a song not performed by, but written by Prince: Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U… haunting and beautiful and I love O'Connor's vocals.

I can't withhold the fact however, that to me Prince's legacy is very marred by recent interviews where he talks about being a devout Jehovah's Witness and seemingly somewhat anti-gay. He says "misquoted," but I believe The New Yorker:
" … on the opposite end of the spectrum you've got blue, you've got the Democrats, and they're, like, 'You can do whatever you want.' Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right." When asked about his perspective on social issues–gay marriage, abortion–Prince tapped his Bible and said, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "

Sorry, can't love Prince. Can still listen to his music — still listen to the anti-Semitic Wagner too — but his legacy is marred for me.

  • Prince was one of my favorite artists in the eighties and I loved so many of his songs. I can't say that one song stands above the rest. But Purple Rain comes to mind first when I think of that era. It's the perfect eighties pop-rock power ballad.

  • It seems that there are many of us loving Purple Rain but it is indeed a very good song. Not saying that I was born on the same day like Prince 😉 Thanks for entering me!

  • My favorite Prince song is…..Kissssss.  The guitar work and the bass is right up front and pushes it from Pop to R & B soul.  It's a sexy song with humor.  My favorite Prince performance was the SuperBowl Halftime show, and his phenomenal guitar playing.  Wow.

  • Valentine says:

My favorite is When Doves Cry for its interesting lyrics and a beat that makes me turn the radio up whenever it comes on (which is far too infrequently for my liking).

  • My favorite Prince song is "The song of the heart", heard in the movie "Happy Feet" 🙂  I know it's not one of his best songs, but it's funny and I enjoy listening to it. It puts me in good humour.

  • Picking a favorite Prince song is (for this group, anyway) like agreeing to wear only one fragrance! I'm going to go with Little Red Corvette, since I think it has the greatest opening lyric of any pop/rock song ever.  Happy Birthday Prince. Please enter me into the drawing.

  • I love all of Prince's songs, but the one that stands out for originality has to be Raspberry Beret.  I think it was his homage to the 60's sound of the Beatles.  I also loved the fact he showcased his musicians, especially the strong women.  And I love his sense of humor!

  • Michellle Hunt says:

Oh, what a fun article.  I have a hard time choosing a favorite Prince song…1999, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, When Doves Cry….all great!  Perhaps Raspberry Beret is my favorite.  And the videos certainly are memorable too!
Please enter me in the draw, I would love the samples of Montale Red Vetiver and Parfumerie Generale Cadjmere.  Thanks!

  • I love Prince! My favorite song is I would die for you. My ex thai-boxing piano wizard boyfriend used to play it for me on guitar.  Good times.

  • When Doves Cry- because it came out and was constantly on the radio the first time I ever fell in love…and always reminds me of that time…

  • "Raspberry Beret", if I have to choose just one.  I love the image of the woman who has her own style (vintage!  "The kind you find in a second-hand store"), not caring what anyone thinks (as she walks "in the out door").  Ordinary rules are not for her!
Please enter me – I'd be happy with any prize, but particularly have my eye on those lips!

  • I LOVE ‘Controversy’! I always remember working with this fabulous guy who said that his worst nightmare was being caught in a small aircraft with Prince during extreme turbulence…….think about it………;))

  • Happy Birthday, Prince!  Love him!  If I have to pick a favorite it would have to be "When Doves Cry."  I would love to be considered for the two samples.  Thanks.

  • Patty and Anya  I always identified with Rasberry Beret, still do.. yesterday walked thru the out door.  shopped vintage before it was fashionable  and again the cute guy with the Harley… ran into him about 2 yrs ago now comfortably  middle age, supports the Tea party. Not cute and rather boring..

  • love eighties!!! Prince is one of the greatest artists of those times. When Doves Cry is my favorite!

  • When Doves Cry……beautiful iconic song. Love the movie Purple Rain, plays all his great songs. Fun in the 80's 🙂

  • loverdoll78264 says:

Surprisingly enough, we didn't touch on my fave Prince song, which was Pop Life. Liked the idea that he wrote about the ill effects of drugs, and perhaps, some of the reasonsfor their use. Happy Birthday, Prince. Please enter me in the draw. . . . Georgette

  • OK my favorite Prince songs are: Delerious. Because I was a young girl who just got her own stereo! To see a movie and then hear the songs that were in that movie. Priceless memory. John Candy was the king of the 80's in my humble opinion he was so hilarious in all the John Walters movies as well.
The second is: Diamonds and Pearls. I can tell you that it always makes me think of the layered Coco Chanel look with the excess. Coincidently, when I wear faux baubles, I think of that song and remember that Coco always said to "take one piece of jewelry off before you leave the house".
How appropriate to relate Coco and Prince I mean really:)
PS when the Prince movie came out, Purple Rain, I was forbidden to watch it due to its rating and my age:((( so I snuck over to an older friends house where the rules were not being enforced and I watched it. I enjoyed it even more because I never (to this day) told my parents. But being that the cats out of the bag I should say,"hi mom".

  • sonia garcia says:

Oh Prince! I love his songs: Raspberry Beret, Kiss, Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain… OMG so many good memories, he's back now and he's been playing here in LA but the tickets are really impossible to get…

  • My fav is Raspberry Beret maybe because I loved wearing a beret at that time. Mine was white but I wish it was raspberry…
I went to his concert few months ago at MSG and he is absolutely fantastic. Still in his 30's … 😉  An explosion of energy. Loved every minute.

  • I adore Purple Rain! Who can deny a power ballad really…come on now! Don't you just love singing out loud to this song in the car or in your room? Especially the part where he is almost screaming, I know, I know, I know the times are changingggg!
I've always admired the fact that Prince still looked masculine, no matter how many frills and low-cut tops he would be wearing.

  • fav prince song is KISS because a dear friend surprised us all by singing it at Karaoke one night!

  • His version of "Kiss" is deservedly legendary. Who else but Prince could pull off that sustained falsetto?

  • I'm voting for Little Red Corvette, because it has everything a great rock song should have, including a killer guitar riff!
