ÇaFleureBon Behind the Bottle: Keiko Mecheri of Les Parfums Keiko Mecheri + Paradise Lost Draw

Keiko Mecheri of Les Parfums Keiko Mecheri created La Collection Hésperidés as a thematic olfactive addition to her signature line. The muti faceted flacon in clear crystal  that gleams like a diamond and houses Les Hésperidés fragrances; the  perfumed travels to places Keiko has been and / or imagined.

When did you have the idea to start a series that would be part, yet apart from your line.

KM: In 2009, we started on the creation of these fragrances which eventually evolved into the current La Collection Hésperidés, finally introduced at the Esxence in 2010.

My immediate thought when I heard the name Paradise Lost was the epic by John Milton. But after testing the fragrance I realized that might not be correct. What was your creative process?

KM: Paradise Lost is the latest addition to this collection and is around the theme of an 'escale' to the sun drenched beaches of Goa, India.

KM: One can only imagine the hippie jet set, with a nod to the extravagant lifestyle of the aristocratic adventuresses, end up on the shores on these beaches of paradise, surrounded by the picturesque city scape of Indo-multi-European influence, the hot air filled with the fragrant tuberose, jasmine, blossoming limette trees and patchouli.

KM: Think bohemian style meets jet set style, hâute flower power, the epicenter of orgiastic behavior with long haired "refugees" from the rich and powerful Western world. It is the celebration of naiveté and free-spiritedness of the counter culture ethos of a by gone era .Paradise Lost has its own inspiration although I am familiar with both John Milton's work .

In creating Paradise Lost which starts out with bright notes and ends in deep sultry notes what message are you trying to convey.

KM: The sultry notes enhance and add new facets to the citrusy freshness of these scents. A simple and authentic elegance for an olfactory escape. To capture the contrast between the youthful candidness represented by the fresh citrus notes, and, the mysterious, seductive oriental notes.(Notes Indian limette, bergamot, jasmine, tuberose, Bourbon vanilla, sandalwood, musk)

"Perfumes are rarely and if ever derived from flowers after which they are named" ~ Joris Karl Huysmans.

Lately many Houses are creating fragrances where the perfumista is an armchair traveler. You were one of the first . Was this conscious on your part?

KM: Perhaps it is because so much of what we do involves travel. Traveling is also sharing, even more important than evoking. Travel becomes the pivot of creation. It represents a kind of quest. The analogies that are drawn between perfume, music, and painting thus are stretched to encompass time and space.La Collection Hésperidés is about the escales: Les Nuits d'Izu – Japan, Mulholland – Los Angeles, Taormine – Sicily, Tarifa – Mediterranean coast
.

A place you have never been where you would like to go or capture in a bottle one day

KM: I am working on couple of creations, a desert, a mythical lieu. The story to be continued.

  • Would love to smell Alexandria, ca. 1942 as described by Lawrence Durrell in The Alexandria Quartet…My favorite Keiko Mecheri is Umé, I love the persimmon and osmanthus.

  • Charlotte says:

I love the show “Mad Men” that takes place in New York in the 1950’s and 1960’s. I would love a fragrance for the time with notes of rose, jasmine and a musk base. It is a fragrance that I can imagine the character, Betty Draper, wearing. She appears cool as ice, but is basically insecure and I can see her wearing this.
My favorite Keiko Mecheri fragrance is Jasmine. It is the closest to the original flower of any that I have sniffed….

  • I’m a big fan of Thailand vacation – so would like to try a scent of Samui Island.
My favorite one from Mecheri line is a Flear de Peau. Like the cuir and orris note in it.

  • I love Osmanthus, with osmanthus, apricot and musk.

I love Bali. Tuberose, or Malam Malam, as they call it, is predominatly displayed in my favorite hotel and it’s smell permeates the lobby, along with smells of the sea, the sand. It translates to my own personal nirvana.

  • I am wearing Isles Lointaines right now. It is a lovely, creamy floral; the gardenia and tiare make a sexy combination.

I would love to smell Keiko’s interpretation of the 60’s, although Paradise Lost sounds like it may be close to it. That time period was game-changing, but it was also a vulnerable time. I think Keiko could create that sense of vulnerability.

I would love Keiko to take us either to the Amalfi Coast or Barcelona. My favorite Keiko fragrance is Gourmandisesit is simply yummy!!

  • Wow! This is absolutely amazing. I am a Goan and Goa is but a dot on the map of India. Paradise Lost is an apt name, for Goa got its notoriety back in the 60’s for its hippie movement in an otherwise extremely conservative country. However, now, it is a long forgotten little known location for its divine white sand beaches and laid back lifestyle. I have to return back home every year for my Goa fix. It fills me with so much pride that Keiko Mecheri chose my homeland for her inspiration. I would love to smell her interpretation.
My favorite KM fragrance is Jasmine and I love it for her rendition of the heady night blooming jasmine that transports me back to India every time.
For a perfume idea, I would love to smell KMs take on imperial Russia or perhaps even an olfactory depiction of the majestic Himalayas.

  • I would like Keiko to bottle a Russian fragrance–something opulent from Tsarist times. My favorite of hers is Ume–it was the first niche perfume that I bought. The Japanese plum and wisteria are a great combination.

  • I’d like KM to bottle a green, meadowy Irish spring as I imagine that would be a perfect spring perfume.
My favourite from the line is Iris Pourpre.
I would like to try Datura Blanche as I’m not familiar with white dature but the notes list sounds great and Les Zazous as that one sounds perfect for me.

  • The place I would love to see bottled is Indochine around the turn of the last century. The atmosphere of Marguerite Duras’ The Lover.
My favorite Keiko Mecheri perfume are Les Nuits d’Izu and Gourmandises, since I love saffron and rose.

  • I would love for Keiko to bottle the poem by Byron “she walks in beauty”. Great name and great poem full of contrasts of grace, longing light and dark.
“She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies”
I am fascinated by Byron ever since high school when I read this poem
My favorite perfume is loukoum soir – tonka bean, benzoin -but now Taomorine- Sicilian petit grain, Calabrian bergamot for summer, I smelled this for the first time and it is a dream for orange blossom lovers so uplifitng and cooling, it is for the dog days of summer

I enjoy datura blanche bitter almond, tonka bean, vanilla madagascar for its bruja magic and cuir cordoba sandalwood, benzoin for its beautiful construction and longevity

I love Sardegna island in mediterranean sea, so I’d like to try a scent built aound its peculiarities. My favorite perfume of Ms. Mecheri is Paname. The mix of absinthe and rare spices in it is fantastic.

  • Heart be still- this sounds absolutely gorgeous. Loukhoum is my absolute favorite by Keiko Mecheri, in fact it’s in my all-time top five. I have such a great respect for her creations. The first thing that came to mind as far as bottling a time and a place, was the Christmas I spent in northern Italy about 10 years ago. I’ve always wanted to go back to Varese, there was just something about how the stillness, the snow, the cold felt and smelled different there somehow. A fragrance that captured that would capture my heart as well. Thanks so much for the generous draw!

  • Paradise Lost sounds delicious! I’m not familiar with Keiko Mecheri’s line, and have not had the opportunity to try any of her scents – must remedy this!!!

The scent I’d most like to try – Passflora. I’m crazy about passion fruit. It’s my favorite tropical fruit – so tart and vibrant. Notes are passion fruit, floral notes, lychee, green mango, yellow fruits, white musk.

Time or place in a bottle? Hawaii. Paradise Lost sounds like it may fit.

  • One of my favorite fragrances by Keiko Mecheri is Attar de Rose, it truly is a beauty Taif rose, Shiraz rose, Rose and amber are some of the notes i adore in this fragrance. I would love for Keiko to bottle Ancient Egypt during the reign of Cleopatra and include notes like Rose, Olibanum, Sandalwood, Peru Balsam, Galbanum etc.

  • VIntage Ume with plum and camellia is my favourite Keiko Mecheri with Iris d’Argent second. I am surprised to see the love for it amongst the comments here as I have never seen it reviewed anywhere. I would love to have the smell of the pavement after the rain bottled.

  • sara levy says:

I would like Keiko to use Morocco as inspiration. My favorite scent of hers is Crystal d’Ambre–benzoin and labdanium. Please enter me in this wonderful drawing. Thanks.

  • Queen Cupcake says:

I have read several enticing reviews of Keiko Mecheri’s works, but haven’t yet had the pleasure of sampling them. The one I would most like to try is Hanae, with its notes of yuzu and white flowers.

The scent I would love to have bottled by Keiko is a warm breeze blowing through the vineyards and meadow wildflowers of late summer.

  • May sound prosaic, but I’d love Keiko to bottle the smell of the New Jersey shore. No relation to anything to do with the reality series: this would have a top of sparkly aldehydes for the sea air, lemon ice; main notes of fruity beach roses; a dab of tar for the boardwalk; and some saltiness.

I have tried and loved Loukhoum – it’s that combo of hawthorne and vanilla that make it a delicious gourmand.

  • My favorite Keiko Mecheri fragrance is Oliban, which I own. It is deliciously soothing, and I love wearing it in bed.

My fragrances fantasy is the redwood forest of Northern California, such as the Muir woods, one of my favorite places on earth. Redwood trees and California Bay Laurel, cool fog and warm sweet earth, and California wild flowers.

  • kastehelmi says:

How wonderful it would be if Keiko Mecheri created a perfume dedicated to Armenia–I have never been but have a good friend who is Armenian-Persian and took off a year ago the country of her heritage. I know it would have some fresh coolness in it from the mountains, wildflowers, maybe honey or some animalic note…I don’t know, Ms. Mecheri knows which notes would work together!
My favorite Keiko Mecheri perfume is Mogador, the Bulgarian rose and jasmine together are so smooth and tender without being overly sweet or scratchy, I need some!

However, I have yet to try Attar de Roses, Damascena, Camellia, Isle Lontaines, Cuir Cordoba, Loukhoum Parfum du Soir….

  • datura5750 says:

One of the most amazing places for scents is Oaxaca, and I would love a perfumers take on that…
Tuberose and heliotrope make Datura Blanche a favorite of mine.

  • Lynne1962 says:

I have not had the pleasure of trying Keiko’s fragrances,,,though I am enticed by the notes in Paradise Lost. I love green scents with a passion,,,and would love a scent to reflect any green chypre. (Galbunum included!)

  • My favorite KM fragrance is Isles Lointaines, but I’m also loving Loukhoum.

I’d love Keiko Mecheri to bottle the spirit of the 1920s, either by creating a smoky tabacco loaden perfume or a wonderful green chypre.

  • I would like Keiko to bottle the scent of Eastern Europe with its folklore, happiness, sadness, beautiful flowers and green hills.
My favourite is Iris Poupre. I would like to try Paname because of Absinthe and Loukhoum Eau de Parfum because I love rose.

  • I would like Keiko to bottle an Ohio twilight after a summer thunderstorm, when the lightning bugs are starting to come out and everything is lushand warm. The aroma would be sultry, damp without being fresh, and have some of my Grandma’s jonquils in it.

I have yet to smell one of Keiko’s fragrances, isn’t that sad? Peau de Peche, with white peach and sandalwood, sounds sublime.

  • mariotgomez says:

I would like for Keiko to bottle San Francisco. I love the mixture of the urban city by the bay. I can’t just name one, the ones I use the most are Taormine, Mulhalland and Tarifa,

As I’m heading to bed, I am wearing Crytal D’Ambre.

  • I would like Ms. Mecheri to capture and bottle a vacation to a tropical island as a fragrance. Pure sunshine, the breezes, crystal blue waters, the mild waves, the beautiful flowers, the blue skies, the peacefulness, and the calm and relaxed state.

One of my favorite creations of Ms. Mecheri’s is Loukhoum EDP.
The combination of Bulgarian Rose and Vanilla Comores is beautiful

  • I would love Keiko to bottle Africa, because of it’s diversity and it’s beautiful nature..herbs, spices..that would make a great scent!

My absolute favorite is Datura Blanche but Loukhoum is also a big favorite!

  • I’d love to smell the Thai royal court around 1800 or so.

My favourite Mecheri is Ume, with Japanese plum and wisteria.

  • I have always loved Loukhoum (what is not to love ?). I would love a new KM scent that smells like the clean crispness of a frigid Winter day when you first step outside in the morning with wafts of smokey wood stove/fireplace smoke in the air.

  • I loved Oliban and Cuir Cordoba, I am also positively impressed by Loukhoum series. Next Keiko Mecheri scent- I suggest tropical rain forest. so many brands tried that theme, but they hardly succeded.

  • I think my favorite is A Fleur de Peau, with its iris and ylang-ylang.

If I were to choose a time and place that I’d love KM to bottle next, I’d say the era of Conquistadors and expansion into the new world. I’d imagine such a perfume would have a salty note for seawater and blood, rich spices, rare woods, incense, and lush tropical flowers from South America.

  • Oh this is a wonderful draw! I would like KM to bottle New England wind at the ocean right at the coastline nearest to Hammersmith Farm (where The Kennedys said their vows). I would like the wind from the salty ocean air that is mixed with the crisp leaves that are dropping and the faint maple smells from unknown bakeries. It smells to me like autumn. October and early November. Its not hot but its not cold. Perfect wind for an afternoon spent outdoors with great smells and bright colors in the air. No humidity in the air but the salty flavor is heavy in the breeze. Occasionally, you can smell the fish too. This would not be a water based fragrence. Im thinking almost more gourmand with emphasis on a nutty salted apple and pumpkin notes.
Paradise Lost is gorgeous. The dresses on the women and little girl are loely I want to wear that dress and Paridise Lost together and recreate that moment in the picture sure looks perfect too me.
    As always love you guys:)

  • I have not had the pleasure to try anything from the Keiko Mecheri line yet. Reading the descriptions I’m really curious about Loukhoum, it sounds sweetly delicious! Almond, honey, rose! Paradise lost also sounds amazing, I’m intrigued by the Indian limette and bourbon vanilla notes. Hmmm….. Take me away!

  • I would love to have a scent that smells like my homeland – house of Russian winters 🙂 cold and sparkly, very piney, grass and roots, and incense… dark winters of the Russian winters. oh, and some tea with honey – when you walk into izba, the village house.

my favorite Keiko mecheri fragrance would be Fleur de Peau. love iris and leather.

  • I’d like to try any of them, because I haven’t had the chance to smell this line yet.
As it’s a hot Summer in Spain, I feel attracted by fresh scents. I think Hanae would be lovely, with its hesperidés notes and crystalline musk. The inspiration of a teahouse garden in Kyoto is really appealing.

I think Keiko could work on a perfume inspired by Japanese Middle Age and its legends about the moon 🙂

  • Loukhoum, the one I’ve smelled and worn most often, is currently my favorite Keiko Mecheri scent. Although it’s usually described as being mostly a vanilla and almond scent, I think it’s the hawthorne and Bulgarian rose that makes it so distinctive and memorable.
    .
As for new perfumes, I wonder if Ms. Mecheri would be interested in balancing the sunny daylight of Mulholland with a darker, nighttime Los Angeles scent? I have in mind a wisp of night blooming jasmine blending with honeysuckle and magnolia, carried over the chaparral and sagebrush by the Santa Ana Winds.

  • I would love to smell a cool iced tea scent, or iced lemonade, maybe with mint- thinking the deep south, hot sultry summer days on wrap around porches. My favourite is the simply lovely Jasmine…
