Atelier des Ors Bois Sikar Fragrance Review + Smouldering Elegance Draw

Jean-Philippe Clermont and Marie Salamagne,  in-house perfumer for Atelier des Ors

Always a deep pleasure to reunite with Jean-Philippe Clermont and Megan Paki of Atelier des Ors; we share much in common beyond our love of the finest perfumes. In Milan, April 2018, just beyond the halls of Esxence, in a suite at the Hotel Principe di Savoia, we met and I was treated to an introduction of the new White Collection and this fascination, from the Black Collection, Bois Sikar (Smoking Woods).

Jean-Philippe Clermont and Megan Paki also of Megan in Saint Maxime

It is a personal history of Jean-Philippe within the cigar business and in his devout love for Highland Single Malts, especially from Islay.  Presented with a cedarwood cigar box full of dried tobacco and the scent of Lagavulin single malt whiskey, this was a prelude to the unveiling.

Atelier des Ors Bois Sikar Bois Sikar is a classical tumult of eloquence, finely time- tailored refinement, style abounds, akin to Jean-Philippe himself. A vivid combination of Gentleman’s Clubs and avant-garde bars of an era past where to be well suited and booted was a prerequisite, leather couches creased and worn, parlours of relaxation and ease, luxurious sanctuary from the external world. Vintage cars, driving gloves to the wheel, leather and silver hip flasks with liquid warmth contained within. Memories flood through me as the scent works upon me, its transportive ability is intense, my Uncle in his leather seated classic sports car, the scent of his cigars, the immaculate Saville Row announcing his presence. To pause, one cannot rush a fine Cigar or a Single Malt of distinction. Atelier Des Ors Bois Sikar is just as measured and timeless.

Aging Whiskey Barrels, Cardrona Distillery, Cardrona, NZ. Danu Seith-Fyr©

There is a cosseted intimacy, in a debonair flourish, the touch of fine tailored cotton cuff to perfumed wrist, the embracing of charred oak barrel up against the whiskey gold, peat laden distillation, the scent of the fleshy hand that skilfully rolls across the bunched tobacco leaves. Where they meet is this scent’s surging like the curling cigar smoke or the peaty fires of the Highland bogs.

Recollection. Psyche Ophuichus©

Nutmeg and Woods are not reticent to rise up from the contact with flesh, a rich aromatic pervasion of the smokiness of peat fuelled fires residing alongside the drawing close of match-fire to cigar tip, a sensual interaction, reminiscent of the intimacy of allowing another close with fire to light your cigar, mingled with the aroma that ascends from the pouring of distilled amber liquidity into cut crystal. At its core the combination of Guaiac wood, Cedar Needles, Cedar and Styrax anchor in the classic certainty of the self- assured, discretely measured aura of Atelier des Ors Bois Sikar, underneath an effervescent decadence acknowledged but barely dared to be entertained. Delicacy of Cedarwood cigar boxes pressed with sweet leaves, a conjuring of the evening’s progression to the exquisite company of creme silk dresses, pale flesh in conversation upon creased leather sofas, manicured grace curled around the glass wreathed in tobacco.

French Leather Club Chair, 1930’s Paris. Jackstrawclothingblogspot.

Evening wears a darker cloak in progression, a creamy Vetiver revealed of such smooth proportion, a framed porcelain shoulder warmed by the sweet Tobacco trails curled in strands of hair. So silky it melds to skin as a remarkable whiskey lingers on the palate.

Sean Connery as James Bond in Never Say Never Again

The Noble Renegade and Civilised Gentleman: yet equally embodying an elegant allure for Women on skin. I have to say Sean Connery comes vividly to mind through all this imagery. Atelier des Ors Bois Sikar is uncompromised elegance in every molecule.

Notes:Nutmeg, Woods, Guiac Wood, Styrax, Cedar Needles, Cedar, Tobacco Absolute, Vetiver.

  • Wow… this one sounds like a fall/winter dream! I really enjoyed Danu’s unique writing style! I’m a sucker for a rich smokey scent so this one is right up my alley. Arkansas, USA

  • mike_scintillating_scents says:

Creamy vetiver plus tobacco and whiskey sounds like an amazing winter and fall fragrance. Would love to have this in my collection!

  • This perfume sounds incredibly wonderful! I would very love to have this fabulous perfume in my collection. I very enjoyed the review. The bottle of this perfume is also amazing. Thank you for this wonderful draw! I live in Europe.

  • Catanosmia says:

Nutmeg & woods! I can’t wait for fall! Thanks for the review, the photos, and the draw–I’m in the US.

  • NiceVULady says:

I love the combination of notes-the vetiver, the whiskey, the smoke, and the nutmeg. Yum. As I was reading, 007 actually crossed my mind. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Richard Potter says:

What a sumptuous review. This sounds like a must have fragrance. The list of Notes is incredible. USA

  • fazalcheema says:

I am intrigued by Bois Sikar as it has been inspired by Jean’s taste for the finer things in life such as good cigars and whiskeys. If I am not mistaken, Bois Sikar was first revealed at the Esxense Exhibition. Thanks for the draw . I am in US.

  • Great review as always. Bois Sikar is on my radar after all the good reviews in the fragcom, also would be perfect for the fall and winter. Thanks for this awesome draw, i am in the EU.

  • This is right up my alley. I love, love, love Islay whiskies like Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Caol Ila and the like, as well as some heavily peated ones like Talisker. I’ve always wanted a fragrance which captures that smell. Tom Ford Man Extreme’s opening does to some degree, but it dies off really quickly. Along with that, I love leathery and tobacco fragrances; primarily older and classic ones, whcih this sounds like
    I’m in the US. Thanks

  • Just Add Light says:

Interested to hear Danu’s depiction of vintage cars, leather seats, charred oak barrels, and what do you know? – Sean Connery? Wunderbar! But what truly captured my imagination was the juxtaposition of dry cigar boxes with the creaminess associated with silk – undoubtedly to highlight the smoothness of the composition in the drydown.

From the visuals, there definitely is something intensely dry and smoky about Boir Sikar. I don’t think I’ve ever smelled anything like it. Just from the notes, some people might think that it could do with a little vanilla or amber in the base, but methinks that would take away from the overall artistic impact. Tobacco is my favourite note in fragrances, and this just might be the opitome of tobacco scents available today. My hats off to Marie Salamagne and AdO!

  • I adore the more peaty and smokey Scotches, especially laphraoig and talisker. I’ve been looking for a good whiskey perfume, but so far most of them are more bourbon style whiskey. I would love to try a perfume with more of a peat scent! And honestly, who can resist classic Sean Connerey?

    I live in the US.

  • This fragrance sounds like a wonderful mix of smoke and woods. Danu makes it seem boozy as well. I love the unisex fragrances, especially during the cold dark nights of winter. USA

  • roxhas1cat says:

Sounds a bit masculine, but maybe not. I gravitate towards fragrances with Guiac wood. The tobacco interests me, I am still on the hunt for a tobacco dominate fragrance that isn’t too masculine to remind me of my brother. I love that it is uncompromised elegance in every bottle. Sounds perfect for the coming too quickly autumn!! I have always loved the bottles, remind me of a sunburst. Thanks! I live in the US.

  • Excellent review, Danu! It amazes me how someone like yourself can conjure such eloquent words to describe a fragrance. What appeals to me about Ors Bois Sikar are those amazing fragrance notes. I’ll definitely be giving this one a try. Thank you for the draw. I’m located in the United States.

  • Danu Seith -Fyr says:

Bois Sikar is incredible on Men or Women.. on my skin it flies ..
In turn both ethereal and earthy.. indicative of its key components

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Wow this sounds great! I love reading about unabashed woody/spicy scents these days to cut the sea of fresh/sweet/etc. Loved the curated pictures and the evocative images in the review (cigar boxes, pressed leaves, etc.). Thanks so much for the draw! I’m the in US.

  • Scented Hound says:

Both of the top photos, show that Danu and Jean Phillpe had a good time at their meeting. Danu’s words paint a very descriptive scene that is so enticing of the elegant fragrance notes, and what gets me especially are the cedar needles and guaiac wood. Sounds devine, and I know that I would just love this scent, especially learning that Bois Sikar means “smoking woods” as I wave from blazing California!

  • “So silky it melds to skin”….Danu has a way with words and now I really want to try this fragrance! I am in the US. thanks for this draw.

  • ScentedCorpse says:

A modern take on the classic image of a refined Gentleman?

What’s not to like! Add to that Manu’s description of the drydown with the fleeting silhouette of Vetiver, a faintly sweet tobacco with a single malt aftertaste ? WOWZA !

    I live in Egypt/France.

  • How elegant and classy this sounds. Certainly masculine, but I think as a woman I would love to wear this too, as it might be a little unexpected. Also I am a total sucker for woody spicy combos. Add in some tobacco and I’m hooked.

Would love to win this – I am in Melbourne Australia

  • newyork318 says:

There are a lot of appealing references in this review, but the one that hit me was the need for pause, that like cigars and single malts, it can’t be rushed. Of course the idea of smelling like Sean Connery is also pretty cool. US.

  • Lord have mercy this was made for moi ! Just listen to the description “a creamy Vetiver revealed of such smooth proportion, a framed porcelain shoulder warmed by the sweet Tobacco trails curled in strands of hair. So silky it melds to skin”…argh ! I need this !! The fragrance is filled with almost every note I love and look for in a fragrance ..I cant wait to try this one.

Thanks for generous giveaway ,Im in Canada. 🙂

  • BreathingMyBelovedIn says:

Thanks to Danu for the wonderful review, as always! Would love to be transported into a 50’s film noir with Bois Sikar… certainly light years away from my natural everyday climate, but it’s so nice to break away from the usual airy, modern fragrances that make the middle eastern summer bearable… I live in Israel.

  • Hmmmm Sikar? Sikkim? Notes sound delicious — esp. the malt finish on the palate. Fine worn leather is another draw. The interviewers look like they’re enjoying themselves.

    I’m in the southwest US

  • MMMMM sounds smoky and wonderful. I would love to try. Thank you for the chance. I live in the US.

  • Literally everything appeals to me about Bois Sikar. Everything!

I don’t smoke but love some tobacco smells. And adore whiskey, though I’m not a big drinker either and not particularly knowledgeable. I know what I like! And Bois Sikar would definitely be in that category, with woods and spices and mmmmm

This sentence was both beautiful and also showed how well it could work on a woman:
Evening wears a darker cloak in progression, a creamy Vetiver revealed of such smooth proportion, a framed porcelain shoulder warmed by the sweet Tobacco trails curled in strands of hair.

Thank you for the detailed, vivid review and draw

  • Danu reminded me of the elegant pleasures of life. This perfume sounds equally as opulent. Bois Sikar contains some of my favorite notes in perfumery and we can all agree the bottle is to die for.
Cheers to a very generous draw!

  • Danu’s eloquent prose took me on a smoky, boozy fragrance journey! Bois Sikar reminds me of enjoying the finer things in life. Tobacco, cedar, woods, vetiver, and nutmeg means that I am all in! Thanks for this generous draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • I own and love Lune Feline from this house – it’s my go-to date night perfume. This combo of tabacco and vetiver sounds like it would be equally warm and rich and Danu’s reference to Sean Connery makes me want to win this for my hubby! I live in the US

  • Beautiful review, Danu! I love smoky scents, Bois Sikar where tobacco leaves meet oak barrels seems particularly interesting.
Thank you for the draw. I’m from Russia

  • Bois Sikar sounds enchanting as I love all things tobacco but I’m a little afraid it may lean too masculine for me. If I were to win I may have to share it with my guy! I’m in the U.S. Thanks

  • I think of decadence as languid, sultry, heavy-lidded… But Danu described the decadence of this scent as effervescent! How could I not want to try it? I live the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • Sérgio Teixeira says:

Congrats Danu, the review was so well put together it made me want to watch some old James Bond movies while enjoying a Padrón and some single malt.
    I´m from Portugal.

  • The imagery used in the review makes the fragrance sound so appealing. If definitely give it to my man but I might have to steal it from him occasionally.

  • I got to know about Atelier des Ors through this years Esxence 2018 and afterwards from Sebastian (Smelling Great Fragrance Reviews) In the expo, Atelier des Ors instantly cought my eyes because of the presentation, stunning, I would say Atelier des Ors was a start of the show this year no doubt. Had a chance to try a few scents, and I was blown away by the quality, uniqueness and pure baldness of the power. Bois Sikar was an instant love for me, because of the uniqueness and harshness, absolutely masculine scent that carries a big statement. Heavy ashy and boozy tone is just incredible, really one of a kind and a must to try! Review really states that, that it is bald and mature.
    I live in Europe.

  • m.r.everything says:

Let me first start by saying thank you very much for this opportunity! This fragrance and house have been on my radar for a while. Everything about Bois Sikar intrigues me! I have wanted this one for a while and it will DEFINITELY be in my collection one day! Tobacco is one of my favorite notes in perfumery. Throw in leather and boozy nuances, and you have yourself a winner in my book! Bois Sikar sounds like everything I would want if I created a scent! I was trying to pick a few excerpts from the above review but I couldn’t figure out which statement I liked best, as the entire article makes me want Bois Sikar even more! Danu did a superb job describing how Bois Sikar feels/smells! This article has just made my day! No matter what, Atelier des Ors will be a house I check out for sure! I have heard too many good things and the anticipation just keeps building! Thanks again for this very generous opportunity! I live in Newark, DE!!! Good luck to all!!!!!

  • This sounds exactly what I’ve been looking for to add to my collection for the Fall. Spices, woods and tobacco? What is not to love?!!

After this review I want to test Bois Sikar: creamy vetiver and sweet tobacco, wisky, cedar- it is real masculine combination.
    from Amenia.

Thank you for your warm and generous responses once again. To write is a pleasure for me… to write about such creations as these is an honour.
Thank you all.. thank you Cafleurebon, Michelyn and all the team.

  • Cigars and single malts are also my love, great house and probably great scent. I live in Poland.

  • DubaiScents says:

This review made the scent sound so luxurious and rich! I love tobacco scents and even better if they have a boozy note to them. I can’t wait to try this! I live in the UAE.

  • This fragrance sounds like a homage to the powerhouse fragrances of the 70s/80s. As much as I love my green notes of Pine and Vetiver, I’m really curious to see how nutmeg plays in this fragrance. I suppose its associated more with Christmas cooking and the holiday season, but I’ve always believed that Nutmeg could be the next big note, like what Cardamon did for YSL’s La Nuit de L’homme. Just you wait. Cheers from CT.

  • A very evocative review! Whiskey and peat smoke seem like a natural pairing so I think Bois Sikar sounds wonderfully rich and cozy. I’d love to give it a try and live in the US. Many thanks!

  • doveskylark says:

What an evocative review! The review allowed me to escape to a gentleman’s club in Cuba, so refined and elegant. I’m sure this fragrance also has the power to let the wearer escape into a smoky and boozy (in the best ways) world.
    I live in the USA.

  • The note list sounds great! I love vetiver and tobacco and I am sure that these two together will create a special fragrance.

I am from EU. Thank you!

  • Excellent review Danu !
Bois Sikar has been on my try list for a while now and Danu’s description makes me want it even more.
What can be more beautiful that a refined club atmosphere contained in a perfume. Tobacco is amongst my favorite notes and Bois Sikar would be perfect for fall/winter.
Thank you for the wonderful review and generous giveaway !
    I’m in the EU.

  • Thank you Cafleurebon and Atelier Des Ors for this fantastic draw !
I was able to sample Bois Sikar when i was in Paris last week – at the prime Jovoy boutique , and my iimpressions from my sample are very different compared to what Danu is getting from it:
    1. I am abstainer , but i do love boozy fragrances , and i can say at least on my skin i don’t get anything boozy .
    2. There’s no leather on my skin – nada.
    3. Sweet Tobacco ?!? Sure there is tobacco-a lot of it , but sweetness i don’t get…even some faint traces of it.
By the way this is not the first time me and her have absolutely diametrical opinions and perceptions about sertain fragrances.Same thing happen with Little Song by Meo Fusciuni – nice fragrance i was able to sample on skin at Esxence.Nothing wrong with this-different people, opinions, perceptions and skins.
What i get from Bois Sikar in short is fantastic VERY smoky, dry, earthy and ashy woody-spicy fragrance that leans way more masculine on my skin.
I absolutely love it , but it’s not a crowd pleasing fragrance for sure. You need to love smoky fragrances to wear Bois Sikar.Unlike most Atelier des Ors fragrances it is a challenging one.If you’re looking for high quality and at the same time unique attention grabbing fragrances go with Rose Omeyyade,Iris Fauve,Lune Feline or the white collection.
I am huge fan of Atelier Des Ors as a brand – i do own 100ml of Rose Omeyyade and 20ml decant of Iris Fauve-one of the top 3 iris fragrances for the past 2 years imo.I also love Lune Feline , but unfortunately sillage and projection are below average on my skin.

  • I have a *Thing* for leather, tobacco/whisky perfumes. This one sounds absolutely swoon worthy. I’d love to experience more by this house. I’m in the US.

  • Would love to try Bois Sikar, because it seems inspired by the finest things one can enjoy.
Danu’s review transported me to an old world, full of decadence and pleasure.
Tobacco, vetiver, woods, guaiac seem to create a wonderful fragrance.
    I’m already tempted.
Thank you for a perfect review.
    I live in EU.

  • A truly sumptuous review – whiskey, smoke and nutmeg, all in a creamy cloud, it sounds absolutely divine!
    I live in EU (France).
