April Aromatics Irisistible Review (Tanja Bochnig) + Pure Heart Draw

Blessed are The Pure of Heart for they shall see G-D Alphonse Mucha MFA.org

Mache dich, mein Herze, rein…(Make yourself pure, my heart!) ~ Saint Matthew Passion, J.S.Bach

Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics

Berlin-based natural perfumer Tanja Bochnig kindly sent me a sample of The Preciousss (aka April Aromatics Irisistible) last week – and Bach’s blessed triple meter, his Saint Matthew Passion – immediately minuetted into my consciousness. Yes, I’m fully aware that the Passion heralds Eastertide; it’s the overwhelming emotion, the sentiment of creating a pure heart (very like the Hebrew prayer “Lev tahor b’rali Elohim” – “Create in me a pure heart, o G-d of G-ds”) which moved me. When you factor in the Goddess of the Dawn whose Homerically ‘rosy fingers’ illuminate the heavens, whose flowing multi-hued robe is visible upon the horizon trailing every possible coloration in its wake – it felt entirely fitting (Welcome to my world; this is how my convoluted brain works).

Nocturnal Slumber collage Alphonse Mucha 1898 with detail

If the rainbow weds earth and the heavens, lightness and dearth of it, Tanja’s timing couldn’t be improved upon. The Winter Solstice arrives in the Northern Hemisphere in less than a month, that longest night of the year. Sacred and pagan observances abound. 36 years ago, right after I met my husband-to-be in Harvard Square during a nor’easter – I held a Saturnalia celebration in my three-room flat for 33 people (everyone from housekeeping staff and nurses, opera singers to brain surgeons!) and cooked for three days in preparation, an intense form of hygge. How timely to suffuse this energy into the Cosmos just when we are most in need of it.

Iris 1898, Alphonse Mucha

April Aromatics Irisistible literally explodes upon initial spritz, just as the cork on a champagne bottle will (under most circumstances). It is fizzy with irrepressible Italian lemon that pops right out at you. So delicious. On its coattails clings silvery floral/rooty iris; she carries her costly comrades in tow, a wealth of finest quality aromatic materials from the world over: Bulgarian roses, Indian jasmines and tuberoses, cassia from Sri Lanka! I’m fairly certain that I smell ambrette along with the sandalwood listed (Tanja alludes to many other undisclosed components), with its tenaciously subtle botanical muskiness. The cassia contributes a bright spiciness which settles into delicacy, part of the fabric’s weft.

Les Fleurs-The Iris" 1898 Alphonse Mucha

Irisistible is truly a thing of beauty and among my most loved releases of 2018; the more I smell it, the more I am smitten. My only (minor) caveat here is its ephemeral nature. As is not uncommon among botanical perfumes, it soon lies close to the skin very intimately; perhaps if applied lavishly, the pleasure might be more prolonged. I didn’t want to relinquish the drops I had left because they are so precious to me, so I didn’t test this theory. If any of you have – do share your impressions with us.

Many thanks, dear Tanja, for the sample! The best of the season to you and yours! My nose is my own…

  • I love the images of all of the Art Nouveau Irises. But, I am a sucker for Mucha. I love April Aromatic’s Ray of Light, and I look forward to trying another of her natural creations. Iris is one of my very favorite materials. Located in USA.

  • Thanks to Ida for the welcome to her world. I love how her brain works. 🙂 I also love April Aromatics especially since I prefer perfumes that are more natural than synthetic. My favorite is still Purple Reign!USA.

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Actually never got a chance to try April aromatics.
This one sounds like a good scent based in the early century images and
Allusions to the age of romance and chivalry.
I also heard they use natural elements, to make their creations.
    Thanks cafleurebon.

Mmmm, the notes sound amazing, especially the lemon, iris and cassis. A perfect tmie of year to talk about this one… when the weather has turned cold and snowy and blowy (at least here it has!). I love how Ida refers to it as The Precioussss!!!! I’m in the USA. Thank you for the review and generous draw. 🙂

  • This is a fantastic brand. Calling All Angels is fabulous, and I absolutely love it. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • I’ve been looking to get one of Tanja’s perfumes, and it seems that Irisistable could be a great start. Iris is one of my favorite notes. China.

  • I do like natural perfumery but until now i’ve had the chance to smell only a few houses like DSH for example. I would love to experience more of them especially houses like House of Matriarch or April Aromatics. The notes in Irisistible are looking great and i would love to try it. Thanks for the chance, i am in the EU.

  • I have never heard of April Aromatics but will definitely seek them out now. I was hooked from the silvery Iris and the champagne fizzing lemon. I adore all perfumes. I live in the UK.

  • Lemons, champagne, plus comrades? Mmmm! I will gladly test Ida’s thought to be liberal with The Preciousss. I’m in Southern California, USA. A perfume playmate, I am seeking more of the natural creators of the art of loveliness. There are several in Tanya’s quiver I’m enticed with.

  • Calling all Angels is my favorite AA, but I’d love to get to know others.
The review definitely peeks my interest in trying this new scent, and I appreciated how she tied Bach’s Passion to how Irisistable moved her.
I’m in the USA. Thanks for the draw!

    You had me at Iris!!!
It is my favorite material in perfumery and I am always looking for my holy grail orris scent . I enjoy all of Ida’s writing: It’s passion it’s honesty it’s simplicity …
My favorite April Aromatics fragrance is Bohemian Spice with Calling All Angels coming in a close second . I cannot wait to get a chance to smell this.

  • Wow! This sounds magical! Here is my favorite part.

I would always wanted to own at least one April Aromatics Perfume, and from the review and the notes Irisistible sounds fabulously. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I always love to read Ida’s reviews. They are always so evocative and lyrical. Her description of the opening of Iristible sounds amazing. I like Calling All Angels, Bohemian Spice and Ray of Light. I love natural perfumes. Thank you so much for the draw and for a lovely review. I’m in the USA

  • I’ve never had a chance to try any of April Aromatics Perfume but I’d love to: being a newbie to the world of natural perfumery, I’m quite fascinated by it. Irisistible – what a clever name! – has the notes I love and seek for in perfumes.

Thank you for the draw. I live in Russia

  • I thought the images and art perfectly complimented the article, and it’s something a always enjoy! I like natural perfumes as well, and this sounds just lovely. Thank you for the generous draw, I’m in the US.

  • From the eloquent, beautiful description of Tanja’s, Irisistable, I agree with Ida that Winter Solstice would be the perfect time to bring this to light! I do enjoy natural perfumes, especially Tanja’s line, April Aromatics. I cannot live without Calling All Angels. I reside in the United States. Thank you for this opportunity!

  • Tanja is not only a talented but also a very beautiful lady! I absolutely adore her fragrance Jasmina and Calling all Angeles. Iris is my favorite floral note in the perfumery and to own a natural iris scent would be a delight for me. From Ida’s review I hot an impression that it is also quite berry which is something new for irisy fragrance. I am from Germany, thanks.

  • Thanks for another great review, Ida! I love wearing natural perfumes and I agree that they sit close to the skin faster than you would like. I enjoy wearing them nonetheless. I love what Ida said – ‘If the rainbow weds earth and the heavens, lightness and dearth of it, Tanja’s timing couldn’t be improved upon.’ I haven’t tried April Aromatics yet and I hope to win this. CA, USA

  • Wonderful review by Ida! I love April Aromatics and you had me at Iris. Tanja does the best perfumery. Calling All Angels, Bohemian Spice, and Ray of Light are some of my favorites in this line. I loved this line “Irresistible is truly a thing of beauty and among my most loved releases of 2018; the more I smell it, the more I am smitten.” I would love to win and be smitten with Irresistible too. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • I love reviews like this. I took notes because I want listen to Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion. I also liked reading about Ida’s winter solstice party. And, of course. I loved the description of the effervescent lemon notes.
I love natural perfumes, but I haven’t tried anything from April Aromatics.
    I live in the USA.

  • Beautiful review, Ida, and I love the way your mind works! So stunning that this perfume bought all these imaginings to your mind and the artwork contributes to the effect, as usual. It sounds lovely. I only have the work that Tanja did for Tana, a rose, years ago, but it is lovely and this sounds even better. Thanks for the review. USA

  • Oh, Ida – another beautifully written review <3 and Michelyn, I love the choice of Mucha for the artwork. I liked the way Ida described the progression of the perfume, from a fizzy bright open, into a chilly iris that gives way to host of aromatic ingredients. I actually like botanical perfumes for the way they usually always stay very close to the skin on me. It's a very personal and private experience of scent that sometimes I am looking for. I have not tried enough April Aromatics to have a favorite, but I do like Calling All Angels. I'm in the US.

  • I love the artwork for this review. Really captures the natural and bright flowers in the notes. And Ida’s reviews always have a sense of poetry to them. Irresistible sounds lovely with the bubbly lime, bright spice, and aromatic florals. It does seem like something for more cozy memories. I have noticed with natural perfumes, although I’m fond of the idea of them and the scents seem more unique, they can be quite short lived or close to the skin. All the more reason to save them for more intimate occasions.

  • I have never tried natural perfumes and the description of the notes has me intrigued 🙂 I live inthe EU.

  • Yes, I enjoy natural perfumes. I always loved Ida’s reviews because of her choice of words. This I really loved…”the rainbow weds earth and the heavens, lightness and dearth of it, Tanja’s timing couldn’t be improved upon”.
    I live in California.

  • I love the notes mentioned in the review. Also Ida makes Irisisible sound delicious. I have tried a number of AA fragrances and my favorite until now is Rosenlust. I live in EU. Thank you for this wonderful draw.

  • Ida, another exquisite review. Your beautiful writing always inspires me.
I’m fond of all natural perfume, even though the ephemeral nature of some might be a downside. I keep them for more special ocassions so I can apreciate them even more.
I’m not familiar with Tanja Bochnig’s creations, but it’s never too late.
Irisistible, being one of Ida’s favorite releases of 2018, sounds excellent.
Thank you Michelyn for Alphonse Mucha’s art from this article. A great pairing.
    Thank you for the draw.
    I’m in Romania, EU.

  • I have never tried an AA fragrance, but absolutely love the note of iris! It’s been my fav notes for the longest time. Definitely interested in getting my nose on this one!

  • Ida’s review and Michelyn’s selection of art are truly beautiful and do justice to April Aromatics Irisistible.
I love all natural perfumes for their honesty and sheer beauty, even if some of them are short lived.
The fizzy opening with Italian lemon, accompanied by exquisite florals should make for a wonderful concoction. Would love to try Irisistible.
I haven’t tried any April Aromatics perfume, but Irisistible would make for a great start.
    Thank you for the chance.
    I’m in the EU.

  • I live in the US, and I love natural fragrances–I find their limitations and possibilities amazing! I like the Mucha-era images Ida included with the review; they really capture the living quality of the materials.

  • I have only tried a sample of Precious Woods, which I found enchanting. I love natural perfumes and am very attracted to the lovely images used in the description. What a beautifully written review, I loved the reference to the Hebrew prayer – truly makes me long to smell this fragrance! Iris has a way of filling my heart with a sort of… soft melancholy? Something unique and dream-like. Thank you for this generous draw. I live in Canada.
