An Ode to the Winter Solstice … A Poem by Monica “Skye” Miller

Dark Mother draw me down into the deepest recesses of your belly

Deep under the crusty layer of the earth (sweet Mitti Attar)

Deep under the rocks and stones (frankincense and myrrh tears)

Deeper even than the permafrost

Deeper than the underground rivers and lakes (the water we use to distill our plants to release their fragrant oils)

Deeper than the caverns under your mountains (hold crystals that energize us from below)

Dark Mother show me the way to where the light is not

And the colors are illusions in front of my eyes

Dark Sister why do I meet you down in the dark with eyes so red (fire smoke and tanning leather)

Is it to hide from your pain?

Do you think the dark will ease your sorrow

And renew your soul?

Why are you here sweet sister (sweet spices nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon)

Dear, sweet Sister, let us go deeper still into the fire of the great Mother

Into the fiery core of the earth herself

Where both of our sorrows will be burned to cinders (fueled by fragrant woods of cedar and sandal)

And our tears will turn to dancing diamond sparks (fiery ambroxan aroma crystals)

This Winter Solstice little Sister

Let us hold hands

And renew together

The dark is strange when you are alone

We should sing a little song to help us find the thread of light

That leads us both back to the sun

Be sad no more big Sister

Do you not see the light at the end of the tunnel of darkness?

This is the shortest night

And from now on things can only get better

Little sister you were a baby in my arms

Big sister you were there to hold my hand and guide me

Together

In love

In companionship

Let us walk

Hand in hand

Toward the light in a fragrant cloud of sweet perfume…
