Aftelier Perfumes Tango (2006)- Fragrance Review + Lust, Sadness and Longing Draw

mandy aftel tango perfume aftelier cafleurebon

We have called Mandy Aftel the Queen of Green, but she is much more than a botanical perfumer.  She is one of our country’s most talented olfactive artists, and has been the inspiration for an entire generation of perfumers from all over the world.  In addition, her best selling books including Essence and Alchemy should be on the bookshelf of every perfumista.  Her unique multi textured creations weave scented stories that speak on the skin.   Although I have only recently started exploring Ms. Aftels’ body of work, the fragrance that continues to haunt me is Aftelier Perfumes Tango, created in 2006.

Seven years ago Mandy told  Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen that Tango was one of the most complex compositions she has created. Tango can be indescribable as a reviewer because of all the emotions it stirs…lust, sadness, longing, sorrow and passion. It morphs from the scents of a dimly lit dancehall in Buenos Aries to the mournful strummings of a Spanish Guitarist unfolding into a bold and sensual struggle that is both earthy and elegant.

Tango unites unlikely partners, and joins them in a dance that is primal and moving, stripping away all labels and laying bare the soul. Coming together to the tempo is wild sweet orange and a hint of  ginger, moving deftly and directly at the top. Just as the opening chords of the tango are unmistakable and exciting, this fragrance glows with the underlying warmth and embraces you firmly. As the passion builds and the dancers get closer and more intimate, champaca flower defines the woman in all her beauty and mystery. As  he holds her close, she rebels against his earthy masculinity and strength; she matches each of his step with her own. Just as the Tango dancers, grasp, spin and release each other, so do these notes and the intensity only builds from here. After the rousing opening and erotic pulsations of its heart, Tango finishes with an amazing combination of olfactory moves using roast seashells (choya nahk), blond tobacco and tonka bean to portray salty tears, smoke and  naked skin.

Memories of aged wood, lingering sweat and smoke simultaneously haunt and confront. Though the the song remains unchanged, the combination of movements between dancers are infinite and each successive wearing has lead to different but always unforgettable fragrant experiences. Sillage: above average. Longevity: very good.

Notes: wild sweet orange, fresh ginger root, CO2 coffee extraction, champaca, choya nahk, blond tobacco and tonka.

Disclosure: Review based on a sample sent to me by Aftelier Perfumes.

  • I’ve never tried any Aftelier fragrances, although I’ve been wanting to. I’d most like to try Shiso, as its notes and description are fascinating, although I feel as though Tango or Lumiere might be more to my liking on me.

As far as dancing the tango, I LOVE it. I’d most like to dance with my husband, since he refuses to dance!

  • I love Tango and my sample is nearly gone. I also love Fig and Sepia. Actually I had the opportunity to sample Mandy’s entire line in 2012 and there wasn’t one that I didn’t like! If I could dance the tango with anyone… Tilda Swinton, Johnny Depp or my boyfriend but alas I am so bad at following, I would have to lead.

  • The Aftelier I would most like to try Cepes and Tuberose.
I would also tango with my husband if either of us could learn to tango!

  • Mandy has so many gorgeous scents, it’s hard to choose. I think right now my favorite is Secret Garden.
I think it would be a blast to learn the Tango with my husband. Thanks for the draw!

  • I have not tried any perfumes from Aftelier, but I have been wanting to try Cepes and Tuberose for quite some time. As for the tango…I’d say my bf except that we are equally left-footed, so that probably wouldn’t work out terribly well (though it would be fun!). That said, I would possibly choose Johnny Deep because why not?

  • wefadetogray says:

I actually adore Mandy’s elixirs, my favorite is Ancient Resins which smells divine!
I don’t really like dancing in couples. i tried to learn tango once and the woman teaching me screamed at me: do you want to be a man? well, I don’t want to be a man I just don’t want to be led.

  • i would have loved to have tried Pink Lotus, but it’s been retired… a tango? why Gomez Addams, of course!!

  • I’ve always wanted to try Tango. I love Cuir Gardenia and adore Secret Garden. I consider Mandy a true artist and look forward to her creations.

I would love to dance the tango with Maks Chmerkovskiy. lol

  • i love Mandy’s take on Tuberose, Cepes& Tuberose, but i’d also like to try Wild Roses and Cuir Gardenia. If I could dance the tango with omeone, it would be Ricky Martin, living la vida loca, lol.

  • I am intrigued by your review of Tango and would love to try it. It makes me wonder how a perfume artist interprets emotions – longing, sadness and sorrow – in the form of scents.

If I could dance the tango with anyone, I would choose Baryshnikov, and dance to the music of Piazzolla.

  • I’m a tanguera and also teach Tango and this perfume is on my list as must-try!
When I go to a milonga (that’s how you call a Tango dancing evening) I dance with many different partners, of course with some it works better, but the challenge for me is to enjoy the dance with any partner I meet.

  • I think I’m most drawn to try Cepes and Tuberose, it sounds really interesting.
I’d tango with Shakira, the girl can move!
    ty

  • I’ve always wanted to try Aftelier, especially Parfum Privé. Tango sounds vivid and tantalizing… I’d love to try this one as well!
If I could dance the tango with someone, it would be Ian Somerhalde 😀

  • I would chose my 2 children for the dance, because that would be the funest option.
and I would want to try tango and fig

  • My favorite of all time is Honey Blossom but I’m also dying to try Cuir de Gardenia =) If I could dance the tango it’d be with my fiancee… =P

  • Last summer I oredered some Aftelier samples with the help of a friend living in the USA – Sepia, Tango and Cepes & Tuberose. I was initially dying to try Cepes & Tuberose, but Tango turned a most lovable of the three! I get powdered cherry pits from the sample!!!The next ones I am craving to try are Shiso and the latest Cuir Gardenia!
    Thank you for the draw!
I am in the EU, Bulgaria.

  • I would love to tango with Antonio Banderas and I would like to experience Cuir Gardenia. I live in Europe.

  • Sepia! Sepia is one of my favorite perfumes ever.
I would dance with Cate Blanchett.

    Thank you for the draw

  • I’ve never tried any of the Afeliers, though the gardenia sounds fantastic. And I have to say that as a ballroom dancer, this one just climbed to the top of my list. If I could dance a tango with anyone (other than people I already can dance with) I would choose Mirko Gozzoli, one of the best ballroom dancers in the world.

  • I am sad to say I have yet to try any Aftelier fragrance. I have wanted to try Muse though. US

  • Carole Fallon says:

I would love to try Ancient Resins! I am not familiar with the line, but would love to win the Tango too! I am in the US. I would love to dance the tango with my dear husband, should we ever learn to dance!

  • What an interesting idea: perfume coloring the raw emotions of humans. I have not found any Aftel scent I liked but I would like to try this one. If I could dance the tango with anyone I probably wouldn’t because I don’t know how to dance it but if its a fantasy, then I would probably choose someone distinguished like Anthony Hopkins. Im in the US.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

my favorite Aftelier is the discontinued Absinthe..if i could tango with one person, i will choose Angelina Jolie..I am in the US

  • John thank you for another great article! I really enjoy reading your perfume vacations, as I have come to call your eloquent, elagant, descriptions….Mandy’s Cuir Gardenia is one of the few gardenia’s that smells exactly like the one’s in my garden LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!!!! John, we should Tango, Dear Friend, YOU ARE MY CHOICE!!!! 😀

  • Wonderful description! It caught my attention and I am already craving for it.
I only read about Aftelier perfumes and I would like to try them all, but above all it is Tango that I want to smell.
Because I like the dance itself.
Please count me in to the draw.
    Thank you.

  • I forgot to tell you…. I would dance tango with Andy Garcia
Of course, after my regular Tango partner, Paul 🙂

  • John, this is a wonderful review and it makes me dying to try Tango. My favorite Aftelier perfume is Wild Roses and I would tango with John Astin or Raul Julia (just call me Morticia). I am in he US.

  • julesinrose says:

I have not had the pleas re of trying any of Mandy Aftel’s scents. I just looked at her site recently and would love to try Cepes & Tuberose so much! But, Tango sounds fantastic, too! I really admire her work. In the US still!

  • helicalgnome says:

I love her Lumiere and that weird creature that is Cepes & Tuberose. I have never been good at dancing. I cannot even dance alone but tango sounds like one of those things I would like to try at least once.
Thanks! I am in the US.

  • I am beyond intrigued by Ms. Aftel’s solid perfumes, particularly Fir. Walking in a forest, barefoot on soft pine needles is where I feel most quietly spiritual.

A tango on the other hand, is a completely different kind of energy. I’d tango with Gene Kelly.

  • I’m dying to try Cuir Gardenia! Cepes and Tuberose is my fave so far, would love to try Tango. I would dance with Baryshnikov! Thank you!

  • Cuir de Gaedenia is one of my most powerful perfume longings to date 😉 and Tango sounds equally seductive–if perhaps more assertive.

I think Rodrigo Santoro looks like he could dance a very good tango.

  • Sepia is one I have a sample of and it’s the only one I have from the line so far. Yes I would love to try the Tango and dance it with Rudolph Valentino.

  • I’d love to try Tango and Shiso, but really they all sound wonderful! I’ve taken tango lessons with my husband which was a hoot since I’m already taller than he is and I had to wear heels for the class. We were like Morticia and Gomez.

  • I have never tested any fragrance from Aftelier, but I would love to test Oud Luban in solid form. I have read many great things about it!
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I would like to try Lumiere – and I would like to dance tango with Andy Tauer.:-)))

  • I would love to try Ancient Resins – which is apparently worn by Leonard Cohen. And, I would prefer to dance the tango with my boyfriend who is very forgiving of my clumsiness!

  • Ooh, this sounds lovely, but I’d really, REALLY love to try Parfum Prive…ambergris….wow! I live in the U.S.

  • My current favourite Aftelier perfume is Fig. I’ve only tried three, though.
I can’t dance the tango, but if I could, it would be with Lord Peter Wimsey.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • I have never tried an Aftelier perfume, although I do own her book Essence and Alchemy, I should remedy this by trying Honey Blossom, as I am on a honey kick lately. Maybe it’s this never-ending winter!
I wouldn’t want to inflict my dancing on anyone, as I have no grace whatsoever!

  • I’d like to try Tango, and would dance the tango with Gabrielle Anwar ala Al Pacino 🙂
