Aedes de Venustas Musc Encense Review (Ralf Schwieger) + A Lover’s Kiss Draw

At Esxence in Milan this past April, I was fortunate enough to snag a proper whiff of the brand new Aedes de Venustas Musc Encensé and I remember the fragrance had an immediate effect on me. I was suddenly rooted to the spot and completely mesmerized. I quickly jotted down some notes: “Deliberate. Thoughtful & considered. Passionate. Personal.” Those words still ring very true almost five months later on the eve of the release of Musc Encensé.

Incense by Bela de Takach von Gyongos-Halasz

The name Encensé is not just a play on the French encens (incense) and insensé (crazy). The french verb Encenser means both “to scent with incense” and “to praise to the skies.” Musc Encensé will garner an abundance of praise I suspect, all of it well and truly deserved. This is Master Perfumer Ralf Schwieger’s second perfume for Aedes de Venustas, the first being Iris Nazarena  (which won a Fragrance Foundation Award in 2014 for Perfume Extraordinaire). Aedes de Venustas Iris Nazarena did for iris exactly what Mr. Schwieger has done for Aedes de Venustas Musc Encense, weaving musk and  the brand’s signature incense into something so exquisite that it must be experienced. Schwieger is the nose behind some of my most favorite scents; Lipstick Rose for Frederic Malle,  Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle, Christopher Street for Charenton Macerations, Eau Des Merveilles for Hermes, Etat Libre d’Orange Fils de Dieu among many others.

It comes as no surprise to me that he created a musk and incense perfume that stops me dead in my tracks. All the more miraculous for having an incense-centric scent that I can actually wear and adore; incense has heretofore been a note I struggle with, my skin really hates it and almost always reduces it to a murky/ashtray/cigarette odor. Not so with Musc Encensé. This is incense that positively trills with joy and delight, but quietly and for my exclusive pleasure.

Aedes de Venustas Musc Encense is a fragrance with pedigree; perfectly realized and clearly well thought out with exact deliberation and consideration; a swoon-worthy takes-your-breath-away scent that truly feels as if a lot of time and effort went into the creation. A perfect perfume that is “crazy good” as my young niece would say.

Egon Schiele The Embrace

Opening with a furry and green herbaceous clary sage, it is a bright and fresh fragrance, but like pure white trails of soft smoke heading heavenward, this is a scent that slowly spins and pirouettes through a scented journey in a seemingly constant state of change, unfurling like bolts of silk thrown across a burnished mahogany table in slow motion. The ambery accords provide an unctuous warm base of near-gourmand feeling, sweetened slightly, and just when you think you’ve settled in for the long run, whoosh….you are off in another direction, the cashmeran and musks creating an almost feral, dare-I-say sexual vibe that is nothing short of a scented prayer or meditation. Aedes De Venustas Musc Encensé is sheer and airy staying close to the skin. When a perfume is this good, I simply don’t want to share with anyone, except for my “significant other” whom I suspect will want nothing more than to just get as close as can be and lick my skin. Notes: Clary Sage, amber accord, cashmeran, tonka, incense, musks

Disclosure: Many thanks to Francois Duquesne of Maison Duquesne for the samples. The opinions are my own.

Note: As I am taking my 2018 mid-terms so to speak, at this time, Aedes de Venustas Musc Encense is one of my top five best perfume of the year, which is why I felt compelled to write a mini-review. Like Robert, I do not fare well with incense or strong musk perfumes, but Musc Ensense’s swirls of incense wafts through folds of amber silk that caress my bare skin. Traces of his musky scent linger on my pillow; I feel his lips gently brushing the hollow of my neck and I am distracted all day. Greetings from Switzerland!

  • Top 5 best perfume of the year??? I’m all ears. Here’s my favorite line from the review: .”…a swoon-worthy takes-your-breath-away scent that truly feels as if a lot of time and effort went into the creation. A perfect perfume that is “crazy good” as my young niece would say.” This fragrance sounds remarkable – thought out and alluring. I’ve never experienced Aedes de Venustas fragrances but I’d love to give this one a wear. Arkansas, USA

  • DonMiguelIvory says:

I enjoyed the description lol. Its a dead representation of what you feel when you smell. Im from michigan in the US and y favorite fragrance from them is their signature.

  • I’ve never had the opportunity to smell anything from this house so maybe this is my chance 🙂 I like a lot the pyramid notes so i guess it’s a great scent. Thanks for the draw, i’m in the EU.

  • fazalcheema says:

Aedes de Venustas Musc Encensé. I have two perfumes from Aedes and enjoy both and several from Ralf’s creations. This perfume is true to its name and Schwieger’s past creations for Atelier Cologne, Malle, and Aedes indicate Aedes de Venustas Musc Encensé will be good as well. Thanks for draw. I am in NY.

  • I love incense, so this sounds quite worthy to check out. I’ve heard good things about Iris Nazarena but never got the chance to try it. I think it’ll be interesting to get to know what Ralf Schwieger’s style is like!
Thanks for the draw. I live in EU.

  • Absolutely love this brand, own several, favorite is Pelargonium. I like the analogy of a “scented prayer”. USA

  • Robert’s “sexual vibe that is nothing short of a scented prayer or meditation”, and Michelyn’s “The Kama Sutra of perfume” make me wanna try this at once!
I joyfully participate, I live in EU.

“Deliberate. Thoughtful & considered. Passionate. Personal.” Perfect.

Copal Azur is my favorite Aedes perfume, though the Phoenicis candle is my absolute favorite Aedes scent.

  • A very personal and sensual review, well done, Robert. Incense loves my skin and with the marrige of musk I am sure to feel the warm, gentle embrace of my lover long after he has parted. I am in the US. Thanks to Maison Duquesne, for the contribution of the draw..

  • broomflower says:

The image of the scarf being thrown through a window is so lovely! And I am glad Michelyn corroborates Richard’s sense that this is the perfect incense perfume. I really like Grenadille D’Afrique and I live in Vancouver, Canada.

  • I recently acquired a splash sample of this (which i spilled by accident! ), and i fell in love with it. Its subtlety is so alluring. My favorite musky incense fragrance to date. I’d love to have a bottle! I live in the US.

  • Onyinye Elochukwu says:

I quickly jotted down some notes: “Deliberate. Thoughtful & considered. Passionate. Personal. I loved how the notes were described in details.

I live in USA and I don’t have any favorites yet because I haven’t tried any.

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

This is my fav part “Aedes de Venustas Musc Encense is a fragrance with pedigree; perfectly realized and clearly well thought out with exact deliberation and consideration”
I have not tried this house so far. Id love to.

“Unfurling like bolts of silk thrown across a burnished mahogany table in slow motion.” That imagery is so magical. I’v not had the opportunity to smell any of the Aedes perfume,s but I’d love to get my nose on Aedes de Venustas Musc Encensé Chicago

  • Robert’s reviews are always thrilling to read! Props in this one for the use of the word unctuous Roberto! I want to smell this furry clary sage musk amber concoction so bad now! I live in Washington DC. My favorite Aedes de Venustas is Cierge de Lune, but I have only smelled a few, as they are rare to find in shops – I would love to experience them all! Thanks for this opportunity!

  • I love musk and I love incense, it’s a win win. This sounds beautiful. Enjoy fragrances that morph and I can catch wafts all day. I’m an amber nut and so glad this fragrance has yet another ingredient that just captures me. I am thrilled this was brought to light. Excited to try. I have not tried any Aedes de Venustas fragrances but I’m not giving up hope. In the USA. Review just made me giddy to try fragrances again.

  • Richard Potter says:

I just ordered a full bottle. I’ve been lusting after this since initial reports from Essence. Lovely review, Robert.

  • Thanks you for a really great review!! Like Robert and Michelyn, musk and incense do not go well with my skin. I love Robert’s notes when he first smelled it- “Deliberate. Thoughtful & considered. Passionate. Personal.” Such powerful and beautiful words for a perfume. I’d love to win this! Thanks for this opportunity. Ish CA, USA

  • Roger Engelhardt says:

This sounds really good. Great review, and I love the last paragraph!
I own Christopher Street and it is an exceptional fragrance. Also have the first release by Aedes, composed by Bertrand Duchefor, pardon my misspelling!!
Would love to be in the draw.
    I am in the USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Love the description of the “feral/sexual vibe” and the silky smooth imagery of Michelyn’s review. I spritzed this the other week at Aedes and thought it pleasant on paper, HOWEVER, the traces left on my skin is really where the magic happened! Thanks for the review(s). I’m a fan of their Iris Nazarena and Palissandre d’Or. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Would love to try this. Sounds interesting and the combination of Musc Incense scent is something I haven’t really tried. Thanks for the giveaway. California

  • I love the poetic language of Robert’s review and it makes me want to try it immediately. My favourite from the line is Cierge de Lune. I live in Sweden.

  • Wow! First of all this article and pictures play some crazy games with my mind to see a fragrance expert so excited about a fragrance means a lot! You got me with “daring sexual vibe” Musk is really not my number one favorite note but I love incense very much and when it is done correctly, it is a furry dream. I would love to have a versatile incense that would be sexy and not too meditative so Musc Encense seems to be a perfect one! I am based in Germany, Altheim-Münster. Thanks for this review and opportunity to win such an interesting scent!

  • lucacavaleri says:

    Hi from Italy!
I’m addicted to Aedes perfumes, they are classy and technically perfect. I Own 5/9 perfumes from the collection, my can’t-live-without favorite one is Iris Nazarena, sooooo i guess i’ll love this one too from the same great nose… From the review i enjoyed the paintings chosen to represent both te sacredness and the carnality this perfume evokes. I hope to win 😀 good luck to everyone!

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Wow thanks to the recent reviews, I have two more aedes de Venustas.
Such fine releases and being a great fan of musk and incense, it makes much more exciting to be able to get to experience this perfumers creations.

  • This sounds beautiful. I love Iris Rebelle and I’m interested in trying more from this perfumer. The images used in this article give me a real sense of what to expect from this perfume. Thanks for the giveaway. I’m in Ohio.

  • For a long time now, my dreams is to try Aedes de Venustas creations, since it is not that available in my country. As always love and thank Michelyn for introducing us with incredible creations and taking us on a journey through words and visuals to understand the creation physically feeling it. From all the creations made by Aedes de Venustas, Iris Nazarena sounds like my absolute dream and Musc Encense not far behind which sounds like an interpretation of a kiss.
I am from Europe, thank you.

  • Amber silk caressing bare skin? yes! I want to try this! And it would be the first Aedes perfume I will have tried. In the US. Thanks for this amazing draw.

  • doveskylark says:

I just love what Robert said about the sexual and feral vibe that is like a scented prayer, a mediation. I like when fragrances are sexy yet spiritual–this one really intrigues me. I loved Iris Nazarena; I’m sure I will equally love this one.
    I live in the USA.

  • Great brand! I own and like Copal Azur a lot, but I love Iris Nazarena. That is actually the only scent my partner and I share. She comes from the iris side, I love smoke, we both found each other in Iris Nazarena. – Musc Encense could be made for us! To be won to Germany, thank you!

  • I love Iris Nazarena and I love incense scents so this is going to be a must-sniff for me. I have to say Aedes makes one of my favorite bottles too. Thanks for the review & the draw. I’m in the US.

  • This house creation of Iris Nazarena is a personal fave. If they do something as well that includes musks, can’t wait. US

  • I have been a fan of Aedes de Venustas perfumes since they rolled out their first fragrance. I also really like their shop. The way Robert describes how this develops and Michelyn – well, anything that can distract one all day has to be worth wearing! My favorite Aedes perfume is their signature original perfume. thank you for the info and draw. I’m registered and in the US.

  • Wonderful review! I enjoyed every sentence. This perfume sounds fabulously. I have never had a chance to try any of Aedes de Venustas fragrances, but I always wanted to try them. At least a few of them. Thank you for this generous draw! I live in Europe.

  • Linnea Wiedeman says:

This purfume sounds wonderful. I enjoyed reafing this review and I am drawn to musk scents. The bottle is beatiful. I live in the U.S. thanknyou for a chance at this draw.

  • Oh my God, so wonderful review!
I especially like this part of description”-“like pure white trails of soft smoke heading heavenward, this is a scent that slowly spins and pirouettes through a scented journey in a seemingly constant state of change”.
    So nice. Thank you Robert.
Unfortunattly I have tested only Pallisandre d’Or- amazing perfume.
    US

  • Great review. I really liked the context given of this perfume among the other works by Ralf Schweiger plus the detailed description of the evolution of the scent.

  • Amazing how smell stirs up feelings, memories. Whenever I smell Chinese incense I’m back with my grandparents in Hong Kong. Wonder what this scent will bring up.

  • Sensual and spiritual. A lover kiss on the neck, this musc Encense sounds like another must have from Aedes. Clary sage and amber are also very different. I own Iris nazrena and the first one by Duchaufour. Very good quality house
    I live in the USA

  • James Weaver says:

A wearable Incense note I also have the problem of incense fragrances coming off as ashtray or a cigarette odor on my skin to. A sexy exotic incense fragrance very mouth watering. My 2 favorite incense fragrances are Mauboussin m generation and Raghba Wood Intense by Lattafa these do fragrances do not look comparable to Aedes de Venustas Musc Encense. My favorite Aedes de Venustas fragrance is Cierge De Lune. Virginia USA

  • The main thing I like about Robert and Michelyn’s reviews is the sensuality of them. That is one thing that I love about certain musc/musk fragrances; they are often scandalously sexy. I like how they both describe Musc Encense as a fragrance that will draw people closer to you. I also like that they agree that it’s a wearable incense, bc I too struggle with certain incense fragrances. This sounds like it could be so right for me. I enjoy the other notes in the fragrance as well! I’ve never tried anything from Aedes de Venustas, but this could be a first! Thanks to everyone for making the giveaway possible! I’m in the USA.

  • I love incense fragrances and this one looks to be right up my alley. Nusk is hit or miss on my skin. The more animalic musks seem to work best, while the white musks tend to smell really feminine. Antway, I would love to get to try this one and find out if it will work well. Canada.

  • I am a huge incense fan-love to burn incense sticks, and i do this almost every day.The smell of it makes me feel relaxed – my zen smell for sure.
The other notes are quite intriguing too + high praises from both Robert and Michelyn – should be a great fragrance.
To be honest i’m not familiar with Aedes de Venustas , but i do own 3 fragrances made by Ralf Schwieger , one of which is my scent of the day – Orange Sanguine , so i do have high expectations.
Tnx a lot for the draw.
Last few months non-stop back and forth between Virginia USA and Scotland , so basically US and EU at the same time

  • Green fresh opening with musk and incenses later sounds absolutely stunning, I’d love to try this one. I live in Poland.

  • So beutiful review full of nice description of nuances!!!
I like musc and incense!!! Sounds very simple, but beutiful.
I am intrigued- Kama Sutra in the bottle!!???!!!
I am not familiar with Aede, but have read so many wonderful reviews.
    US

  • This sounds really good. I recently discovered Iris Nazarena, so I’m excited to try this one as well, especially given that I do really enjoy both musk and incense fragrances. US.

  • I’ve come to really love incense lately. It’s so intimate and meditative. Based on your initial impressions, “Deliberate. Thoughtful & considered. Passionate. Personal” this sounds absolutely wonderful, and exactly the kind of scent I’ve been gravitating towards recently. Thank you for the draw!

I live in India and my favorite aedes is iris Nazarena . This is a great review and being a fan of iris Nazarena I am even more intrigued to try this new offering.

  • Great review! You make this one sounds fabulous and definitely up my alley. I’ve never tried Aedes de Venustas perfumes before.

Thank you for the draw! In the EU

  • I will tell you that I’m going to blind buy this fragrance if I don’t win this time! Great article, very descriptive, and being that incense and musk are two of my favorite accords, I’ve made a mental note about this perfume. Can’t wait to get my hands on this one. Sounds like it is truly addictive. I am at a point where I do not buy a fragrance unless it’s absolutely necessary, this is likely to be one of those scents that is unavoidable. I live in Niagara Falls, New York. Bravo-Robert Herrmann

  • I love incense fragrances. They’re my favorite perfumes for cooler weather. And that bottle is gorgeous! Love atomizers! I’ve never tried anything from this perfume house. This one is definitely on my wishlist!
I live in the USA (Pennsylvania)

  • Both of these reviews sent chills down my spine. I love incense and I must love something that would feel like silk on the skin. Both reviews describe something so passionately that I certainly want to try it. I’ve never tried anything from this house so I have no favorites. Thanks so much for the draw. I’m in the US

  • gvillecreative says:

This sounds amazing. From both of your reviews, it seems that its an incense for the person who struggles with incense perfumes– which is definitely me. I love incense, but I’m still working to find one that balances the spiritual/personal feeling of incense with something that doesn’t smell too much like burning wood and smoke. It sounds like the musk plus incense combo might be exactly what I’ve been looking for.

I have a sample of Iris Nazarena on its way in the mail to me, and I think this will likely be my favorite Aedes perfume.

I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!! Fingers crossed.

  • ooh, I like incense, but musk disappears on my skin – the Narcisco scents do not smell the same on me as on the SA when I tried it – much better on her! I would love to try one of Robert’s top 5 scents of the year, and need a close to the skin scent as well. I don’t have a favorite Aedes scent, but this sounds like a winner. thank you for the generous draw, and I’m in the US. lovely artwork for the article, too.

  • I love incense and love the style of this line! The review highlighted the sensuality of this note but also it’s serenity

  • It sounds like a dynamic and multifaceted scent. I love incense, but realize it’s not an accord for everyone. I’d love to smell how it plays with a decadent amber and sexy musk.
    I’m in the US.
I’ve never tried anything from this house.

    Thanks for the draw

  • Great review by Robert! This one sounds amazing. “the cashmeran and musks creating an almost feral, dare-I-say sexual vibe that is nothing short of a scented prayer or meditation” really got my attention and has me intrigued. If this is on Michelyn’s Top 5 list of the year, I know it must be stellar. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Robert’s review makes this perfume sound like such a tantalizing potion! I’m brand new to the world of niche fragrances and so far, incense perfumes are my favorites. I’ve yet to try anything from this house, and would be honored to wear this. I’m in the US.

  • Thanks for the giveaway. I’m in the US

Incense and animalic fragrances are some of my favorites. Having a dirty musk and incense sounds fantastic and something I would love to have in my collection

  • Thank you Maison Duquesne and Cafleurebon for this draw!
Nice job by Robert … with just one small statement .I do love iris fragrances – iris is one of my favorite notes , but to me Iris Rebelle can’t hold a candle to Iris Nazarena.I know both are made by Ralf Schwieger and Iris Rebelle is s nice fragrace too , but imo Aedes de Venustas one is on a completely different level – is better composed , deeper , richer , with better longevity , projection and sillage. One of the best irsis fragrances ever.Bought it because of Carlos from BFL and his review , but that’s the only Aedes de Venustas i’ve smelled up until now.
As for Musc Encense Michelyn’s “my top five best perfume of the year” and “The Kama Sutra of perfume” … strong statements for sure.I will most definitely sample it.
Most of the time VA when i’m in US , and London when i’m in UK

  • Wow both Robert and Michelyn have me almost doing a blind buy on this one! It sounds so sexy and otherworldly. My favorite Aedes de Venustas scent is Oeillet Bengale but I’ve not tried all of them. I’m in the U.S. Thanks for the generous giveaway!

  • Yeah, the fact that this post bundled together two enthusiastic reviews that proclaimed Aedes de Venustas Musc Encense to be heart-stoppingly seductive has my interest piqued. Unlike Robert, I rarely have trouble with an “ashtray” like aroma coming from incense. “Incense” covers a wide range of scent profiles, but I can see the appeal in most of them, lol. I live in the US, and if I’m fortunate enough to win this would be my very first encounter with an Aedes de Venustas fragrance! ;D Thanks!

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

Oh my… I have nothing like this in my collection. In the past I have shied away from incense as it somehow comes off dirty and rancid on me in general, but your enthusiasm has piqued my interest. I have tried no scents from this house to date but thank you for the introduction and I will investigate the offerings. I live in the US and thank you for this chance to try something completely out of my comfort zone!

  • I love both reviews as both mentioning the incense note being incorporated so well and not ashy. That‘s very important for a good perfume. And „the Kamasutra of perfume“!!!! Wow! Want that!
I love Ralph Schwieger and I adore Iris Nazarena. It‘s my top5 ever perfume! Please draw me in. I am from Germany.

From trying a sample of this fragrance, then reading this article this a spot representation that Robert Herrmann covered. Thank you for the giveaway. Live in the USA

  • What I love? The photos selected!!!! That is just making me lust for this fragrance. I live in Ohio, USA. I’ve tried Baume du Doge and Iris Nazarena from this house. They were just okay; so, I am looking to be made a believer.

  • I love music scents and like that this one also has clary sage. Michelyn’s image of incense and ‘amber silk’ is very inviting! My favorite Aedes scent is Iris Nazarena and I live in the US. I’d love to try this new offering – thanks for the opportunity!
