Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna Perfume Review +Vacation in Lucca, Italy Draw

Lucca, Italy Gail Gross©

The morning sun blistered the ancient walls surrounding the city of Lucca. The cobbled streets were literally steaming. Many, if not most, of the 100 churches, the possible cool refuges from the heat, were closed or under construction. Despite the stifling atmosphere, one could still feel the history of the place. The heart of Lucca, on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, has been a thriving hub of commerce and culture since early Roman times. But, at that moment, in the heat, Lucca's colorful past mattered little to me. As the temperature soared above 36 C all I cared about was a spot of shade and some sort of refreshment to cool my fevered brow.

Just as I began wishing to be anywhere but Lucca, a lovely young woman stepped away from the entrance of a shop. "It is so hot today," she said in perfectly charming English. "Would you like to try our refreshing fragrances?" As I walked through the door I was convinced of serendipity.  Without intention or plan I found myself in the cool blue interior that defined the Lucca retail space of one of CaFleureBon's favorite perfume companies, Acqua Dell Elba . I was soon relieved by the scent of the sea, offered to me as an exquisite eau de parfum – Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna

Fabio Murzi Chiara Murzi and Marco Turoni Acqua Dell Elba©

The perfumery, Acqua Dell Elba,  was created in the late 1990s by three family members, Fabio Murzi, Chiara Murzi and Marco Turoni. Hailing from the Island of Elba, the trio was inspired by the scent of the sea, the ocean breezes and the perfumes of the flowers that defined their island home. Destiny, serendipity and enthusiasm propelled the three to create a family business that now has more than 28 single brand stores in European. Acqua Dell Elba fragrances are also offered through a large network of specialized perfume shops in Italy and, increasingly, throughout the world.  Acqua Dell Elba has gained steadily in popularity since it first began production in 2001. Today this special perfumery, inspired by the island of Elba, offers not only personal fragrances but a variety of spa and home scents as well.

Back to my story – the Acqua Dell Elba shop was the perfect refuge from the heat, a place for me to catch my breath, and renew my senses while testing the beautiful fragrances.  Nicoleta, the gracious SA, proudly presented the entire line. I loved everything but gravitated toward (and purchased) Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna. Classica Donna opens with sea salt and flowers; a hint of medicinal myrtle, orange blossom, tart citrus and a breath of that round white sensuality that is gardenia.

There is no doubt in my mind that Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna is an aquatic fragrance – but nothing like the overwhelming and overtly wet aquatics of the past. Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna is all about freshness and balance, about sea spray rather than sea water, an aquatic that will not drown the wearer but rather invigorate, calm and sooth. In the dry-down the floral character of Classica Donna comes to the fore. he skilled use of citrus keeps both aquatic and floral elements in check, creating balance, transparency and a distinctive impression of island freedom and elegance. After six hours, the morning sea breeze and the garden flowers retreat and fade.  I am left with the olfactory image of another wind, a warm zephyr, from the land this time, lifting and carrying perfumes from the island slopes, the scent of wild Mediterranean herbs and woody shrubs as they breathe and transpire in the late afternoon sunlight. Notes: Orange, orange blossom, myrtle, gardenia, citrus, jasmine, marine cistus and Mediterranean shrubs.

Disclaimer: My bottle of Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna was a personal purchase.  My opinions are my own.

  • This review transported me to the city of Lucca. The respite from the heat inside the Acqua Dell Elba shop was a happy occurrence. The only island I have been to is Grand Island in Lake Superior. I live in the US.

  • Gail chose this fragrance during a heatwave, so it must be fresh and wonderful. The mention of myrtle and Mediterranean shrubs has me intrigued. My favorite is Sanibel Island in Florida. All those shells! USA

  • I like the color of the interior of the shop! Different and refreshing. That’s the color I painted my front door of my house. I love that this is a fragrance of the sea and not a “beach” scent. In my opinion, there is a difference. I haven’t been to many islands, I guess I’d have to say Catalina Island off the CA coast. Haven’t been there in decades, but fond memories. Thanks for the chance!! US

  • Great review, Gail. While I’ve never tried anything by Acqua Dell Elba, Classica Donna appeals to me because it sounds so refreshing and delicious! I work daily out in the high heat, and would love to give it a try. The most calming island I’ve ever visited was St.Croix, in the Virgin Islands. Such beautiful blue water and white sand. Thanks so much for the generous giveaway!

  • Oh, retreating to a cool store in the heat of the day of just improved by it being a perfume store. I like acquatic scents, and would like to try this as a little different, and it sounds nice for summer, as for islands… Hmm… Ile de la cite, Martha’s vineyard is calming, as is Whidbey Island in puget sound. Then you for the draw, in the us

  • I’m intrigued by the citrus blend to an aquatic fragrance. I normally find them too crisp for my taste. But this sound perfect and timely for the end of summer. My favorite calming island I’ve visited has been Fiji, but I’ve also had lovely experiences on many west coast (US) islands as well.

  • Wow. This sounds lovely. Understanding that Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna is all about freshness and balance, about sea spray rather than sea water, an aquatic that will not drown the wearer but rather invigorate, calm and sooth sounds like a perfect summer fragrance. The calming island that I’ve been to was Menorca in Spain. USA

How lovely that Nicoleta, the sales associate, invited you into the store on a sweltering day. I’m happy that you found a fragrance to ward off the oppressive heat. I’d love to try this line. Maybe this would be the line to get me to love aquatic fragrances. I seem to get headaches from aquatic notes, despite my love for the ocean.
The most calming island I have ever visited is Oahu, Hawaii. I hope to visit the other Hawaiian islands someday.
    I live in the USA.

  • What a lovely sounding fragrance! The notes sound refreshing and uplifting. The entire island of Hawaii is my favorite of all islands I’ve ever been to.

    I live in the USA.

  • I’m interested in it since it sounds like a true aquatic scent, as in it is actually reminiscent of the sea or an island, as opposed to what is typically found in aquatics. That’s sadly uncommon.
Most calming island was maybe Curacao.
    Im in the US, thanks

  • Gail, what a delightful surprise while on vaca! This sounds abolutely like it was an inspired find on this hot day. Loved this part an aquatic that will not drown the wearer but rather invigorate, calm and sooth. In the dry-down the floral character of Classica Donna comes to the fore. Although I’m landlocked doesn’t mean I couldn’t do with a bit of sea spray.

  • I love aquatics and anything inspired by the mediterranean. I love scents that are fresh and soothing. I would love this set. I’ve never been to a calm island other than a couple on Lake Erie. You all are lucky! I’m in Ohio.

  • Gail’s review makes Classica Donna sound like an oasis in the middle of this summer heat. Orange blossom and gardenia are some of my favorite notes.

My favorite island getaway has been the British Virgin Islands.

  • I love the reason why the family opened the shops and that they were inspired by the sea, ocean breezes and the flowers of their home island! Its wonderful that Gail found this gem of a store and fragrance on her vacay trying to get away from the heat of the day! I love that the scent is sea salt, citrus, orange blossom and flowers this sounds like a beautiful scent that would take you back to a beautiful island vacay! I loved Ochos Rios, Jamaica!

  • Based on Gail’s review, Acqua Dell Elba Classica Donna sounds so appealing in that it “is all about freshness and balance, about sea spray rather than sea water, an aquatic that will not drown the wearer but rather invigorate, calm and sooth”. The most calming island I have visited is Jamaica.

  • What a unique experience that Gail got to have when she wasn’t expecting it, those are what make traveling so fun and interesting! I am a fan of any scent that reminds one of the sea so this would be a sure thing for me. The most calming island I’ve visited is Orcas Island in the San Juans near Washington State. It feels very remote and unspoiled and I got to see orca whales in the wild there which was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever experienced. I am in the U.S. Thank you!

  • Gail, I loved this story! I felt like I was there with you. And although I consider myself a pretty experienced traveler, I had to google to find where in Italy Lucca is found. This perfume sounds heavenly. I love brands created to fit there surroundings and this seems to be one such. Thanks for the review and giving me a new brand (to me) to seek out. USA

  • Thank you to everyone for commenting and participating in the draw! Acqua Dell’ Elba Classica Donna is currently providing me a soothing cool escape from the dry and smoky late summer air of the Pacific Northwest.
