A Scented Walk Through Andre’s Garden -Art Basel, Six Scents and David Apel

A first for Symrise: From December 1-4, 2011, the company will present fragrance as part of a botanical artwork exhibit at the Art Basel Miami Beach.

 Botanical fragrance artwork at the Art Basel Miami Beach

 Exclusive collaboration with André Balazs Properties

 Cooperation between Symrise  and SixScents

The synesthetic experience combines fragrance with a garden exclusively designed for this event. The spa of the Standard Hotel in Miami Beach will feature André’s Garden, an attraction at the periphery of the art trade fair, for four days.  There, visitors will be treated to a botanical installation that showcases fragrances from Symrise. These were specifically created by Symrise perfumer David Apel on the basis of New York luxury hoteliers André Balazs Properties’ ideas. They run the legendary Chateau Marmont in Hollywood and the Standard Design Hotels in the US.“ As a perfumer it's surprisingly rare to be given such a type of visual, olfactive, and most importantly, emotional inspiration. André Balazs Properties have a crystalline vision of what they want.

David Apel created many niche, celebrity and luxury fragrances including Purple Patchouli for Tom Ford while at Givaudaun

With that vision and with the inspiring garden I began my creative work. Verde was created as a vision of the Lush Green 'walls' that enclose the garden space and envelop the observer with lush tropical humidity dripping down from green leaves. Incense into the Sea was centered more on the surrounding elements, bracing notes of the sea air with warm mineral sands and sun bleached Teak add a salty woody sensuality. My hope is that these fragrances add to the experience provided by André Balazs Properties and the Garden of the Standard Hotel MiamiBeach,” explains David Apel, Senior Perfumer Symrise North America. SixScents, which brings creative minds from the worlds of fashion and perfume together, initiated the aesthetic artwork with the goal of developing special fragrances.

2011 Art Basel

Inspired by the fragrances, SixScents designed a garden that allows both perfume and art lovers to experience the ingredients used in the fragrances in a unique and fascinating way.  For the installation, they have created two hanging upside downgardens. Each garden will make it possible to perceive one of the scents created for the Standard Spas. Verde will fuse with the air in the Hammam Hallway and Incense into the Sea gives a fresh touch to the Shady Swing Lounge outside. The fragrances served as olfactory inspiration and provided the basis for designing the botanical installation. For “André’s Garden” SixScents transformed the plants, flowers, and spices contained in the fragrance into botanical sculptures.- via press release

Editor's Note: Six Scents  and Joseph Quartana won the indie Fifi awards for their Series 3 in 2011 in conjunction with Givaudan. Is this a hint of Series 4 collaboration?

  • Life imitates perfume and perfume imitates life. This would be an amazing community project as well. It would make a cool grant funded project!

  • I’m jealous that I can’t go – it sounds so wonderful. I’m intriuiged by the Shady Swing Lounge and Incense from the Sea.

  • beautiful project-I’m glad to see more and more projects that combine senses, creat joy and where fragrance is the main player
maybe we enter (again) a period of syncretism

  • superb initiative The one and only perfume and landscape(well a place really) event I ever attended was in the gardens of Palais Royal with the fountains perfumed by a Francis Kurkdijian creation a few years back: amazing experience.Lucky those attending this event.

Sounds like a wonderful project. I met Mr. Apel on two occasions-once for an informational interview years ago when I was hoping to become an industry perfumer, and once when I tool a Perfumery 101 class at FIT. He is very enthusiastic about his craft!
