The wax of crayons…chalk dust…the leather from a new pair of shoes. Certain scents will always be associated with back-to-school in my mind, but the one that’s inseparable is the smell of freshly minted money in a bank envelope. In my family, back-to-school meant a huge multigenerational shopping trip, with fashion as much a part of the festivities as school supplies, and with mama and grandma coming home with as many shopping bags as the kids. There’s something about the season that says spend, with the minimal effort of summer giving way to a more polished look head-to-toe, and with thousand-page issues of fall fashion magazines to guide us.

Changing up fragrances is part of the same mindset– as the air gets cooler, our taste turns to more serious scents, or at least those that make more of an impact. Following are five on-trend fragrances for fall:

Eauvive

 Chanel Chance Eau Vive

Chanel Chance Eau Vive— This sparkling companion to the iconic Chanel Chance was formulated by Olivier Polge and features a youthful vibe that reminds me of the excitement of those first days of school. Opening with a mouth-watering citrus burst of grapefruit and blood orange, Chanel Chance Eau Vive wakes you up to the possibilities that autumn brings. Crisp heart notes of jasmine and iris lend a sense of sophistication– this beauty spent her summer vacation in the chicest locales. Vetiver, cedar and musk provide a sweet, clean base that makes Chance Eau Vive perfectly suited to those transitional fall days where the weather starts out cool but quickly warms up. Chanel Chance Eau Vive is available from Chanel.com for $77 for 1.7 fl. oz. eau de toilette.

Anthropologie LA: She Called But He Was Unreachable is part of Anthropologie’s new Fictions collection and has the added benefit of being packaged in an illustrated “book,” making it a must-have for back-to-school. Created by Josh Meyer of Imaginary Authors, this scent explores the emotions of an unrequited crush (a critical plot point in every high school rom com I’ve ever seen) with a hopeful opening of bergamot and lemon zest. Heart notes of linden and orange blossom lend a bittersweet tinge to the whole affair– there’s a reason we remember the one who got away. Base notes of ambergris and sparkling musk are meant to convey longing for that which we can’t have, but at $48 for 1.7 oz eau de parfum (available at Anthropologie.com and at Anthropologie stores), She Called But He Was Unreachable is happily accessible.

BlackOpium

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium via scentofobsession.com

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium is a gourmand twist on the classic Oriental fragrance, and it’s just the thing to satisfy that autumn urge for lattes. A collaboration between Firmenich master perfumers Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc, Black Opium opens with a shot of espresso sweetened by sensual vanilla. A heart of orange blossom feminizes the fragrance, and base notes of cedar and patchouli give it a bohemian twist. Black Opium will fuel your fantasies of Left Bank Paris, even if you’re only studying at your local Starbucks. It is available exclusively from Sephora.com at $67 for 1 oz eau de parfum.

sexy Professor

 Sexy Professor via hair.lookli.est

In contrast, Atelier Cologne’s Oolang Infini may take tea as its theme, but there is something very sexy professor about it. Top notes of Calabrian bergamot, Tunisian neroli and freesia are fresh like a blank notebook cracked open for the very first time. Heart notes of blue oolang, Egyptian jasmine and blond leather make us show up for office hours, and base notes of Balkan tobacco flower, Indian gaiac and musk are alluring in the manner of an older man. This smoky leather is available from AtelierCologne.com for $80.00 for a 30 ml travel spray.

True-Blood-bill-and-sookie

From the HBO Series True Blood Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and Vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Meyer) P.S They are married in real life …sighhhh

Finally, what would back to school be without a vampire romance fantasy? Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Coeur de Sang satisfies your True Blood cravings with a deep, gorgeous amber whose name means Heart’s Blood. A mysteriously tantalizing opening of blood orange gives way to a goth heart of black rose and Mysore sandalwood. Complex base notes of Tunisian amber, red amber, labdanum, benzoin, patchouli, Tunisian Opium, vanilla and orris evoke love, longing, and mystery like the best Young Adult novels. Available exclusively from SarahHorowitz.com, Coeur de Sang is $60 for 1 oz. eau de parfum.

Best of all? At $85 and under you can add each of them to your school supply list without breaking the bank. With fragrances this good, you’ll be tempted to take them from your daughter. Be nice and share.

My favorite part of back-to-school time as a kid was getting brand new school supplies. The best years were when I’d also get a new lunch box. I would choose Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Coeur de Sang Le Banque de Parfum. I’m in USA.

  • My favorite back to school memory is seeing my friends that I did not see all Summer, I would choose Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Coeur de Sang Le Banque, I live in the USA.

  • I am living my favorite back to school memory, actually, by going back for a Master’s degree in Women’s Studies just for the pleasure of learning 🙂 I Live in the US and my choice would be the Coeur de Sang Le Banque de Parfum

  • My favorite part of going back to school was the back-to-school shopping trips with my Mom. Yeah, sometimes we’d fight (over shoes!) but now that she’s gone, even those silly fights are fond memories. In the US and my choice would also be the absolutely fantastic sounding Coeur de Sang from Sarah Horowitz-Thran.

I just loved picking out a new pencil case and bag, and of course stationery, gotta love stationery!! I’m in the uk and would love the oolong infini. Thanks for the draw 🙂

  • I vividly remember going into 7th grade. Had spent 6 years in the Catholic school system and this was the first time I would be able to not wear a uniform. Such feelings of exhilaration and downright fear at what I would wear, it was mind blowing.
Would LOVE to win She called but he was unreachable. I live in the U.S. Thanks much for the draw!!

  • My favorite back to school memory is, when the most beautiful boy in the school, he was the singer of a local rock band, and he gave me a bouquet of roses for Valentines day. And all the other girls were so jealous.
My choice is Atelier Cologne Oolang Infini.
    I live in Europe.

  • My favorite back to school memory was seeing my favorite teacher when I was in 5th Grade. I had a small crush so all holidays I was excited and dreaming about returning to school. I am intrigued by Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Coeur de Sang and this would be my fragrance of choice. I am a registered US reader.Thank you for this generous draw.

my favorite memory is transferring to another school and finding on the first day that a previous classmate from the previous school was also my classmate in the new school since he had transferred earlier 🙂 my choice will be Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Coeur de Sang. I am in the US

  • My favorite, but sad, memory is of a gorgeous boy, we were both clearly enamored but so painfully shy that we never got much said. I’d literally not be able to speak. It was sad. I would love to try any of these fragrances, and especially love the summer scene on the Anthro! I live in the US.

She Called Him But He Was Unreachable … there were days before texts, instagram, Facebook, whatsap, snapchat – you’d giggle with a bunch of girls huddled around the phone and call him, not even sure if you wanted him to pick up or not. He did pick up and you hung up before he could say hello, collapsing with laughter. And, oh joy, there was no caller ID. School-day crushes and really why????? Oh well. So happy for texts and fragrance that makes you remember those days, the embarrassing silly moments. In the USA, thank you.

  • How fun! My favorite memory was when the captain of the football team asked to borrow my War and Peace. He actually read it too!
I wonder what happened to him?
My choice is from Atelier Cologne Oolang Infini it is one I never tried and I like the sexy professor pic

  • A fun back to school memory was when in highschool. We saw each other after the summer and notice how everybody was looking different, some were taller, some were tanned and we would share our summer memories.

Atelier Cologne Oolang Infini for me.

I am a registered reader from the EU.

Thank you for the opportunity! Wish you all the best!

  • Freshman year of high school, there was a boy I had a mad crush on. I would make sure to look really nice for the class we had together. Looking back, it’s very funny – I attracted everyone BUT him. LOL. I would chose Sarah Horowitz Thran’s Coeur de Sang! I’m in the US.

  • Donna Spiegel says:

My back to school memories….going shopping for new clothes, School supplies and then of course showing up at school on the first day finding out what cute boys were going to be in my class or classes that was always the best! Miss those days because the anticipation was always the best part. If I’m lucky enough I would love to try Sarah Horowitz Thran’s Couer de Sang. I’m in the U.S. And registered. Thank you.

  • My favorite memory is being able to go to the stationery store, and buying all new supplies, half of which I wouldn’t use (a pint sized stapler? Seriously?) and a brand new virgin binder just waiting to be written, glued, and drawn upon. I would choose She Called But He Wasn’t Available, and I live in the USA.

  • It is always still too hot in California Septembers to wear the new outfits. The clash of disparate weather moods echoed the thirst for new beginnings and the allure of the familiar. Oolong Infini sounds just the cool glass. US

  • For some reason, back to school shopping always meant going to Target – and that was the ONLY time we ever went to Target. Now Target is like, the IT thing and I remember just waking up one day and being like, whoa, why does everyone love Target? So I went to Target, and I too love Target all the time now. Hehe. Wow – all of these sound great, but I guess my choice would be the Oolong Infini. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • My favorite back to school memory is my junior year of high school when my sister’s old beater of a VW Beetle got passed down to me. No more riding the bus! Somehow the passenger seat had disappeared and we put a bean bag chair in it’s place. My friends and I had so much fun in that little car. I choose Anthropologie LA: She Called But He Was Unreachable, thanks for all the memories everyone 🙂

  • A favorite back to school memory was getting new books on the first day and smelling them. I would like that Oolang Infini please. 🙂 USA

  • In first and second grade I can remember wearing dresses that my Mom made, and I wore a petticoat underneath that literally made it stand out like an open umbrella. And not just me, all the girls (was that just a Southern thing?) Of course I’m old as dirt so many readers will not know what I’m talking about! It just seems so bizarre now that we wore this uncomfortable clothes, but still played kickball, dodgeball, etc., at recess with no problem. In third grade fashions must have changed or maybe the school said No More Petticoats; we could hardly fit in the desk. I love this phrase: ” Top notes of Calabrian bergamot, Tunisian neroli and freesia are fresh like a blank notebook cracked open for the very first time.” What a great image, and so true–I still love empty notebooks! I would choose the Oolong Infini if a winner. USA. Thank you!

  • My favorite part of going back to school was always shopping for school supplies. I live in the USA and would love to win: Oolang Infini and She Called But He Was Unreachable.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Favorite memories was hanging out with friends talking about vacation experiences. I also love the smell of schools, they smell like paper and pencil shavings to me 🙂 My choice would be Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Coeur de Sang Le Banque de Parfum. I am in the US.

  • To be honest I wished summer never ended. I did enjoy buying new notebooks and pens and book covers and those mechanical pencils. There was something satisfying in starting fresh. My choice for draw is going to be the Oolang Infini, a bottle of that size would be great. US

  • My favorite fun memory from my years in school was that feeling of longing and joy after 3 whole months away from my schoolmates due to summer holidays, where we would meet again and have fun while sharing ideas and thoughts while playing our games.
I live in EU and would love to experience Atelier Cologne, Oolang Infini.

  • hot for teacher..earth science (do they still teach that)
    Major 10th grade crush

    Usa
Would love to win she called it he was unreachablr from
    Anthroplogie

  • I was always looking forward seeing my class mates. Had a great time at school! I would love to win Oolang Infini. I live in Europe.

  • My favorite memory would have to be 6th grade English class and my mom was my teacher! It was the awkward feeling of raising my hand and not knowing whether to call her mom or Mrs. Laws, so I just waited patiently until she called on me! Needless to say, that routine continued for the entire school year. I’m in the US and would love the Oolang Infini. Thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • My favorite memories were going camping and fishing every summer. I also enjoyed the hot weather of course! And unfortunately counting down the days until school starts again haha. My choice is Oolang Infini and I’m in Canada. Thanks for the draw!

  • MikasMinion says:

My favorite back to school memory was actually from college. The beginning of a design studio meant, even better than new regular school supplies, new art supplies! I’m in the U.S. and would love to win She Called But He Was Unreachable. Thanks!

  • Valentine Girl says:

I spent the first 2 years of high school (comprehensive school) in UK & the last 2 years in USA. I had to learn to speak British and then re-learn how to speak American, so no matter which side of the pond I was on, I was always speaking with the wrong accent! While I didn’t have to wear a uniform in America, it was mandatory in UK and I always remember at the end of the year packing up my jumpers (sweaters:USA) for summer with little sachets of potpourri that I had made. When the school year started again, I loved pulling them out of the box smelling like the potpourri! When I finished my ‘O’ levels at 16 and was done with British school for good, me and a group of my mates built a small bonfire and burned our school ties to celebrate no more school…and then….I found out I was stuck with 2 more years when I returned to America in the fall 🙁 I would love to try Atelier’s Oolang Infini. USA resident.

  • One year, on the first day of classes, my high school turned into a sea of lilac, lavender, and violet. Purple Rain was the song of the day. I still smile whenever I hear it. I’m reminded of all those boys and girls in shades of purple.

I would love to try L.A. She called but he was unreachable.

    I am in the US.

Thank you to everyone for sharing your memories.

  • I grew up in a small town, but the beginning of each new school year, at least after about the age of, oh, 12, held the promise of NEW BLOOD — i.e., a new, cute guy who moved from far away. Someone to dream of, fantasize about…so Coeur de Sang would be my first choice, followed by She Called But He Was Unreachable! Thanks, and I live in the U.S.

  • My wife and daughters are True Blood fanaticswhich is how I found this post. Don’t know much about perfume but back to school means my savings account is drained dry
    I live in Texas US
    Help us his dad please

  • I remember looking forward to going back to school because it meant I could get a new shiny box of crayons. I loved getting the huge box with over 100 colors and doing my best to use them up by the end of the year. I’d love to try Thran’s Coeur de Sang Le Banque de Parfum. I am in the U

  • I remember looking forward to going back to school because it meant I could get a new shiny box of crayons. I loved getting the huge box with over 100 colors and doing my best to use them up by the end of the year. I’d love to try Thran’s Coeur de Sang Le Banque de Parfum. I am in the US.

  • I used to LOVE the first days of school when I was a teenager – picking out an outfit the day (or week! 🙂 before, catching up with friends, everything feeling so new and exciting (even if for a little while 🙂 I don’t have any particular memory that stands out, though.
I live in Canada, and my choice of perfume is Atelier Cologne Oolang Infini. Thanks for the draw!

  • No great school romance stories. Not till college when I met my honey. But I loved the new clothes, new hairstyle, brand new books and supplies! I even enjoyed it when my I got to re-live it with my own kids. I live in the US and would choose Atelier Cologne Oolang Infini.

  • I always associate elementary school with the smell of glue sticks. My daughter is six, and I was happy to see a jumbo pack of glue sticks on her school supply list just so I could smell them again.

I’m in the US, and my choice would be She Called But He Was Unreachable because it’s such a fun name. Thanks!

  • Back to school always felt like the first phase of New Year. The smells of leaves and apples and new books and pencils, the fiery colors of the trees on the walk to school, all of it was both familiar and exciting.

I don’t have many distinct memories of the first day anywhere because I was busy being nervous. I remember in middle school I was excited about my outfit of a choker, black top, and long khaki skirt with a slit to the knee(from Delias) and especially my black platform sandals. The first week we all cared about how we looked but a month or so in it was sloppy buns and comfy sweatshirts.

I wish I had a sexy professor memory a la Oolang Infini! But Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Coeur de Sang was much more where I was at. Lots of YA novels, daydreaming, drama. Couer de Sang would be my top choice. Thank you for the reviews and draw! USA

I always loved shopping for school supplies: smelling the new erasers, carefully selecting the right Trapper Keeper…

I’d like to try She Called But He Was Unreachable.

  • I remember my first day of high school, I wore the greatest band t-shirt: the cure. I wore that shirt until it deteriorated! Goth indeed, my choice is Sarah’s coeur de sang. Thanks to all! I’m in the US.

  • I always enjoyed shopping for school supplies. Which often included buying useless things I never used! I was always a bit too excited for the opening of school. I will choose Oolang Infini. Canada

  • My favorite memory has to be going to summer camp. I was about 10 years old and I remember everything. It was such an incredible experience and I made a ton of lifelong friends there.

My choice will be the Atelier and I’m a Canadian reader.

    Thanks!

  • I’m too late for the draw, but thanks for rounding up these great selections. The Atelier Cologne fragrance sounds wonderful – I’ll have to sniff it out somewhere!
