What would olfactory gluttony smell like? I find it quite fascinating that humans take such pleasure indulging in sugar that is otherwise almost useless to us. The feelings of ecstasy we derive from fantasizing and consuming sweet delights are equivalent to lovemaking for some. I am guilty of such obsession and I will confess that gourmand fragrances are my absolute favorite form of sugar debauchery – their makers apply thought and vivid imagination to create olfactory delights beyond what nature has to offer. From the house of Xerjoff and Casamorati Creative Director Sergio Momo who brought us the glorious Dama Bianca,  the sun drenched Dolce Amalfi, the timeless Mefisto, recently re-issued of 2016’s Italic  which is quite a treat. Warm and full-bodied Italica opens with luscious creamy almonds and milk; a pinch of saffron adds a much-needed counterpoint to the sweetness. Bake the whole composition on sandalwood enveloped by dark bourbon vanilla and you get a decadent rich gourmand that speaks of opulence, arousing senses and our imagination. It highlights the most side of sensual side of gastronomy, the pleasure of a delicious dessert as a perfect finale to a memorable meal.

There is an ideal balance between crunchy almond cookie and buttery milky smoothness, a juxtaposition of flavor and taste. I was surprised to see that after the initial opening, it was not as it first appeared. The creamy toffee-covered almonds were architecturally sound, built on a salty, roughly textured crust; it had a restrained, mellow powdery flavor, carefully tempered with a woodsy, slightly smoky base. The drydown is mostly white musk, soft and delicate, a scent of skin with traces of flour. Xerjoff  Casamorati Italica is an extraordinary plated dessert; from the moment your eyes rest on the bottle, its velvety smooth texture promises olfactory delight. An almond toffee twist on traditional St. Honoré, named for the French patron saint of bakers, Italica is not a replica of the classic choux pastry you’d find at a patisserie. However, the dessert contains most of Xerjoff Italica’s key ingredients: the tiny puffs of choux with transparent halos of deep caramel and the dark pastry layered underneath. It’s presented as a gleaming entremet, a glossy, and miniature cake garnished with whipped cream and candied almond. Xerjoff Italica is served with a glass of cold milk in an otherwise cozy Italian bakery that fills the entire street with the most delicious scents of pastries, cakes and treats.

Not surprised, Casamorati / Xerjoff never fails to create one masterpiece after another, and I’ve been wanting to sample Italica for a while but haven’t found it even at an official Xerjoff store.   • Olya painted a very delicious olfactory picture of Xerjoff Italica. I personally have not found a gourmand perfume I love, as I prefer gourmand things to be edible. Gourmand perfumes can be too tantalizing, sans food to go with them. I am keeping my mind open, however. Xerjoff is a famous brand so Italica is going to be a wonderful perfume (it does so appear from Olya’s review) and I would love to try it, hopefully after a healthy meal, so I am not looking for cookies and cakes after putting it on.   • Olya review is very close to what i have smell from the sample. Delicious cookie dip inside glass of milk. Hazelnut-and-Chocolate Meringue Cake is probably best desert that i have try down in portland. Thank you again for the giveaway. USA.

  • I recently purchased 30ml bottles of Dama Bianca and Bouquet Ideale from Xerjoff. I have been considering Italica for a while now. The desire for a decadent almond scent has kept me coming back to it. Now if only the purse would allow! In maryland.

  • Italica…a beautiful fragrance that makes me want dessert every time I smell it! The dry down is like caramel popcorn on my skin!!! Olya’s description is spot on and absolutely as good as the fragrance itself is!!

    I have a sweet tooth so I love trying desserts but the best one is an ube cheesecake a guy in LA makes and it’s bringing tears to my eyes just thinking about how rich and flavorful it is!!

    Gourmand fragrances are such a moving target for me (savory or sweet? Oriental or Fruity Floral, perhaps both? etc). At the same time, gourmand fragrances connect most with my background in wine & fine dining. When I read your lovely notes, I think of a woody bourbon that has been given extra time in oak barrels. From what I read on CaFleureBon, Sergio Momo is exacting in his quality standards for perfume materials. I would love to sample this scent!     I’ve been wanting to try a sample of this but I can’t find one! I like how Olya made a point to speak about how saltiness and woodsy/smoky notes balance things out. I was wondering how full on sweet it would be. I have and love Lira, so I know Xerjoff has a touch with gourmands. Now if I can only get a fresh pecan pie frag!     I have to admit, I’m drooling right now
    I’m not familiar with Italica, but just because of the quote , I’m so eager to try it.
    One of my the first niche purchases was Lira early 2012. Good old days, being a true noob in the niche world. To this day I consider Xerjoff top 5 niche brands ever, VERY few people would deny that , I believe.
    The best Xerjoff fragrances are Cruz del Sur II , followed by Golden Dallah and then comes my old love Lira. I have a great feeling about Italica, let’s see.
    Favorite decadent dessert ? Easy – chocolate tarts with fig jam.

    This sounds like it has everything a non-chocolate gourmand fragrance should have. Yet Olya’s description makes it sound un-fussy, unpretentious and down-to-earth, as evidenced in her sentence “Xerjoff Italica is served with a glass of cold milk in an otherwise cozy Italian bakery that fills the entire street with the most delicious scents of pastries, cakes and treats.” My favorite decadent dessert is cafe liegois, that simple but super concoction of coffee ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate coffee-bean candies.   • Almond milk is my favorite. Gourmand fragrances are the best, I love smelling like a snack lol. My absolute favorite dessert is Pecan Pie.

  • At first, I thought that this might be too sweet, but when Olya described the salty, roughly textured “crust” and the slightly smoky woodsy base, I changed my mind. Plus, having tried Lira, I know that Xerjoff does a great job with gourmands. As far as desserts, I can’t name just one. A perfect gelato sounds good right now. I’m in the US.

  • Italica sounds amazing. I enjoyed how Olya explained it as a desert. It does sound mouthwatering. I have a small decant of it I was given im going to try it asap was kind of saving it for a moment but this really made me want to try it!     Oh Olya you have described my best dream. Pastries!! My favorite bakery in town is St. Honore (I didn’t know the patron saint connection….cool). The saffron note is quite interesting to me, keeping it from being too sweet I am sure. I love most desserts, especially the Frangapine tart with apricots and ground almonds. Sometimes I just like a simple custard. The bottle is so gorgeous with that iridescent red. wow…..just wow. Tomorrow I shall bake something fabulous. Thanks for the chance. USA.

    I thought Olya’s review was excellent, and when she said that fantasizing about desserts was akin to lovemaking for some, it reminded me of a movie (so long ago I can’t remember the title), where they were consuming desserts as foreplay, with all the facial expressions and sounds to go with that.

    What did I like about the review? The description of this heavenly dessert! Yum! I like sweet gourmands, so I will probably enjoy this.   • I found this review absolutely delectable! Xerjoff Italica sounds so delicious and wearable…Almonds, toffee, sandalwood and vanilla…what more could anyone want. And of course, I have a favorite decadent dessert…among many I love pastries with almond filling and crispy toffee almonds baked on top…we call them Bearclaws in the US as they are shaped somewhat reminiscent of a bears paw. I am in the US and I surely appreciate the chance!

    My favorite decadent dessert is Italian Panettone bread soaked in amaretto and cream. It is very milky/lactonic, nutty, and a little spicy. It’s definitely giving off holiday vibes and is making me think of being at a Christmas party in July!     Quality with Xerjoff fragrances is through the roof , and Italica is no exception.
    Balanced crunchy almond cookie, milkiness , saltiness to balance the fragrance, slightly smoky base , Italica sounds so impressive
    I’ve sampled a few Xerjoff fragrances last two months,Nio ,Agusta , Golden Dallah , Accento Overdose , and Amabile-one of my my latest acquisitions. There’s some sweetness, but I don’t believe it’s a gourmand , to me it’s more tart , juicy, and spicy.The opening is mouthwatering, one of the best openings I’ve smelled. Amabile is now in my top 2 Xerjoff fragrances, number one still being Mefisto.
    I can’t say it’s decadent, but I love Chocolate Raspberry Cake.

  • The way Oyla wrote this review like a recipe is brilliant. Very enjoyable! I have yet to try a Xerjoff fragrance. In my area of the states it isn’t something we have in stores and I really want to see and hold them before I buy. Maybe on my next trip to the big city!     Italica sounds truly awesome, sophisticated high end gourmand , and I believe I’d feel in good spirits while wearing it
    For going out , and personal satisfaction I’m happy to have have Lira , my favorite Xerjoff, up until now. Amabile now is my second favorite, and my third favorite is a tie between Cavour I and Dolce Amalfi.

    Italica is fragrance with a character, that has a lot of layers, almond, caramel, saffron with heavy lactonic undertones , top gourmand . Something to be expected of all Xerjoff gourmands of course.
    Naxos and La Capitale are my favorite Xerjoff beauties , and Banana Caramel Pie is my guilty pleasure

    Italica review was such a pleasure to read , awesome job Olya .
    What impresses me the most is different facets set up by the perfumer. Italica is not one dimensional gourmand, there’s also smoke, saffron , milky sandalwood, musk. Posh fragrance at its best.
    We all need such fragrances in our lives.
    Summer nights, on a walk with classy lady, such situations I think will suit Italica the best.
    Untouchables and Eliot Ness I’m thinking every time I’m wearing Xerjoff fragrance. I like so many , my favorites are Casamorati Lira and Opera. Italica anf Amabile are now first on my wish list.

    Italica is photorealistic gourmand , in my opinion made exceptionally well. Like Olya said, it truly smells like you’re sitting in some super fancy Italian coffee shop/bakery and you’re enjoying the smell of your milky almonds, and safran dessert in front of you.
    On my skin Italica is rather linear fragrance, performance is really good. Slightly woody base is there, but unlike Olya, I don’t get saltiness and smokiness at all.
    If you’re like me, and you have a sweet tooth, you’ll be heads over heals for Italica. Try it guys , samples and available now.
    Plum is my favorite fruit, and also note in perfumery, Chocolate plum cake i adore.

    The best Casamorati, the best Xerjoff , and one of the best gourmands ever is called … Italica. Smells very, and I mean very similar to Toffee Almond Cake (traditional recipe) , famous Italian cake. I’m 99% sure the cake was the inspiration behind Italica.
    I’m traditionally trained in Paris Pastry Chef, and it’s really rare for me to get impressed so much by gourmand fragrance, considering well over 80% of my big collection is comprised by gourmands. Italica is special, I really mean it.
    I can’t pinpoint one favorite “decadent dessert” , it’s like asking a parent “what’s your favorite child?” . For the sake of the theme, I’d say Toffee Almond Cake .
