Xerjoff Golden Dallah Review + Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Draw

Xerjoff Golden Dallah

It is said that in ancient Ethiopia a goat herder named Kaldi became the very first caffeine fiend. Apparently, Kaldi came upon a coffee tree, helped himself to some of its berries, and subsequently found he couldn’t get a wink. While this strange bean was clearly not going to work as a sleep aid, it occurred to him that its energizing properties might catch on. He told the local abbot, who made a drink of the berries and discovered it kept him lively from evensong to matins. Before long, everyone in the monastery wanted their morning joe. Within the next few centuries, coffee cultivation spread throughout Arabia and its neighbours, and made its way to Europe during the Renaissance. Coffee houses sprang up in cities, the Vatican decried it as the Devil’s drink, and Bach set its addictive bliss to music: a worldwide obsession had begun.

It is to this storied history that Xerjoff Golden Dallah, part of the brand’s Coffee Break collection, pays tribute. With cheeky hits of ganja and an oud center, ambery Golden Dallah could be the voluptuous sibling to Parfumerie Generale’s splendid Coze. While heated, patchouli-rooted Coze is busy getting up to some free-spirited no good in the big city, buxom little sis Golden Dallah swans about the family country house flirting with the local lads and smoking weed with the stable boy.

At first spray,  Xerjoff Golden Dallah pours a steaming cup of black coffee and lights up a joint. The toasty, burnished notes of a classic dark roast filter up through a haze of bitter herbal notes that smell like artemisia and oud when separated out, but which give the overall effect of hemp. Amber arrives quickly to add some resinous sweetness and body, and I start to smell cocoa powder. As both perfumes head towards their middle sections, they depart from each other in style noticeably. Where Coze stays dry and heads into woody territory, Golden Dallah incorporates gourmand notes of cocoa and a distinctive crunchy hazelnut, like a posh Nutella accord. But then the spices come to play.

Cardamom, black pepper and a pinch of clove percolate with the coffee, and the ganja smell picks up again. While it takes some hide-and-seek, I finally find the rose hiding coquettishly behind and ephemeral tendril of incense. As minutes tick by, the rose becomes almost girlish, satiny, fresh and uncomplicated. The lactonic smell of tonka is clearly present now, and the coffee, cocoa, spice aromas intensify to the point where they almost seem like flavours. Right now, Golden Dallah smells like a well-made mochaccino sipped in an Amsterdam coffee house, with jangly indie music playing softly in the background. I can almost taste it.

Golden Dallah’s careful interplay between the bitter notes of the top and the milky, ambery notes that swirl in like stirred cream in the middle keep it elegantly centered between feminine and masculine. It is a delectably dark, off-sweet concoction that mixes up the most delicious aspects of cocoa, cardamom chai and French roast, perfect for days when you just want to jump back under the covers. If you love a good café au lait but want to keep the sugar on the downlow, Golden Dallah might just be your brew.

Notes: Coffee absolute, fresh exotic spices, rose absolute, incense, Cambodian oud, amber, hazelnut, cocoa, tonka hyperessence.

  • This was a perfect combo…I prepared my self a cup of black coffee, logged in here and saw a great review by Lauryn about a coffee based scent that I was always interested in but haven’t tried yet. I love her description and how she almost poetically talks about the transition of notes. I really like the combination of coffee and herbal notes in the top, but I also really like the combo of hazelnut and cocoa that comes in later. Perfect! I also appreciate the intro about the origin of coffee drinking, I didn’t know all those details. I still don’t own any Xerjoff fragrances so I don’t have a favorite one, but Golden Dallah was always on my list of first ones to try. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I have only heard great things about Xerjoff Golden Dallah and I think I can be addicted based on Lauryn’s description of dark roast coffee and ganja. Either way I will order samples thanks for the link. My favorite Xerjoff is Lira.
I do live in the USA

  • This recalls the glamour of old coffeehouse fantasies… an imaginary vie Bohème… and the promise of getting wired off a desserty drink (years before I built up a caffeine tolerance). Gives my heart a little furry hopeful feeling. Yes, please!
(Have never tried any Xerjoff, myself.)

  • I really love the pairing of the coffee to the oud and to the incense. This scent makes it seem like it would be powerful. It was also really cool that Xerjoff decided to base Golden Dallah off of that interesting myth. I also love coffee fragrance. I do not have a favourite Xerjoff fragrance though. Florida.

  • Hazelnut coffee with spices and incense? Yes, sounds excellent! I enjoyed reading about the inspiration behind Golden Dallah, and especially the painting of the Interior of a London Coffee House. Thanks for the opportunity to sip (sniff). Mich USA

There are 2 things, according to Lauryn’s review that I like about Golden Dallah:

    1) “At first spray, Xerjoff Golden Dallah pours a steaming cup of black coffee and lights up a joint. But then the spices come to play.”

    2) “If you love a good café au lait but want to keep the sugar on the downlow” (not big on ultra-sugary fragrances).

My favorite Xerjoff fragrance is More Than Words.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • A steaming cup of java in one hand and some smoldering grass in the other sounds like a great way to start the day! The gourmand aspect is very appealing. The cocoa, nutella accord and chai spices sound delicious and comforting. The rose-incense combination provides elegance. I like a not too sweet cafe an lait so Golden Dallah seems perfect. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • The story about how coffee was discovered in ancient Ethiopia is humorous though also plausible in a certain way. Golden Dallah has a bitter opening but a milky note follows it, and I enjoy milky vibes in fragrances. From the ones I have tried from Xerjoff, I like Naxos the most. I am in USA.

  • I never knew that story of coffee spreading from Arabia. What I find interesting is that I don’t drink or like coffee by itself but found that in certain fragrances I really love it so I would be delighted to try this one! Iowa, USA.

  • This review took me on a journey of memory through all of the coffee-laden periods of my life, and I loved it! I went to college in Seattle during the height of the 90s java craze, spending many late nights learning to enjoy my coffee black in a cozy cafe on Queen Anne Hill. I spent some time in my 20s working on an organic coffee farm in Kona, picking only the fully ripened red coffee cherries from the arching coffee branches, with a bucket strapped to my chest. If a sudden downpour of Hawaiian rain came, we’d run inside to play scrabble and wait for it to pass. In my 30s I lived in Amsterdam and had the pleasure of lounging regularly at sidewalk cafes with my dog, sipping cappuccinos and taking in the olfactive mixture of cannabis, pastries, and open air flower shops. Every facet of Golden Dallah seems to speak to those moments in one way or another, and I would absolutely love to experience it. Thank you, from Oregon, USA.

  • Lauryn gave a nice description of this strange, but intriguing, fragrance, which I have never tried. In fact, I have not tried anything similar, yet. Xerjoff Golden Dallah, with coffee, Oud, cocoa, hazelnut, etc. seems to be a gourmand perfume, but with other notes, and the Xerjoff name, may have other surprises hidden underneath. Enjoyed the writing as well as the pictures – the Xerjoff Golden Dallah bottle is so beautiful. Thanks for the generous draw and the review. Writing from the USA.

Oh, this sounds lovely! I’m on the hunt for a great coffee scent, and this sounds like maybe it might be it! I don’t know this house, but they sound great! I’m in NYC.

  • Golden Dallah is a fantastic fragrance, so well blended and layered, with a great gourmand, to my opinion, opening, followed by a layer of sweetness and warmth. In every combination, the tonka bean is fantastic, given just the right amount of sweetness and gourmand scent to a fragrance, and combined with coffee and incense, the result is divine, perfect for winter, for cold days. it is the perfect scent for an afternoon in front of the fireplace, with a warm hot chocolate and a romantic movie. I haven’t tried many Xerjoff releases but I remember liking Lira. And I also don’t drink coffee, but love the smell. A gourmand coffee with a peek of rose and smoke sounds so lovely.

  • The interplay of coffee and amber, as well as cardomom, a favorite for me, make this sound so alluring! Thank you for a great description and the draw. USA

  • I love a good coffee scent and the idea of swanning about the country house. The description reminds me of “the good old days” hanging out with friends having coffee, sharing a smoke. I am in the US.

  • Besides the coffee promise what is appealing are the accompanying notes. The rose seems unique here and anything called hyperessence is most welcome. I don’t have a fave from the line. US

  • A fresh cup of steaming black coffee! With cloves, milky amber notes and Oud to top it off sounds heavenly! I’m an avid coffee drinker and love that note in my scents as well. Super intrigued. Xerjoff makes quality scents. Based in the US, MN

  • The ‘devil’s drink’ moniker always makes me giggle. But I know exactly what Lauryn means by those herbaceous notes in the opening. They were part of the reason I fell in love with this one so quickly. In addition to the nutty gourmand feel in the drydown, GD never becomes too sweet like so many coffee fragrances on the market today. I don’t get much rose on my skin, although the lactonic qualities are unmistakeable. And the spices!! Goodness me. Lauryn nailed the cardamom, but I can’t remember getting any clove with the coffee. Wish I could go back to my sample to look for it, but in my hasty exhuberance I drained that sucker so fast…. Oh well. Perhaps I’ll get another chance soon. Favourite from Xerjoff is still Ivory Route, but this one could very well break my top 3. Methinks one way or another, a bottle is in my future. A perfect cool weather fragrance. MI, USA

  • Hashim Madani says:

It seems this one fuses Western & Eastern coffee palates in one fragrance. I can think of quite a few purely Western or purely oriental coffee fragrances that are wonderful but this fusion is new for me. Xerjoff is one of those houses where every other fragrance seems to be a must buy. It’s really tough to choose just one but if I have to, it has to be Accento Overdose. VA, USA

  • This fragrance includes all my favorite notes! Xerjoff Golden Dallah sounds like a heavenly concoction. I really enjoyed the opening anecdote of this review. I’ve heard it many times before, but I think Lauryn really captured the obsessive nature of the relationship that many of us have with coffee. I feel that way about coffee fragrances too. I’m always on the hunt for the next great one! I’ve never tried Xerjoff and would love to be entered in the draw.
    I live in California, USA.

  • Wow “cheeky hits of ganja and an oud center”. I’ve been trying to get into coffee fragrances but they always come off too strong and on the nose. If I wear a coffee I want it to have a twist. This sounds very intriguing especially with the amber facets.

  • I have been on the hunt for a coffee frag and a xerjoff would undoubtedly be beautiful. Cannabis note though.. hmm, interesting. Favorite xerjoff thus far is 40 knots.
    Commenting from NY.
    Thanks for the chance!

  • I am a coffee addict, and have no intention of kicking my habit! I’m glad it is no longer referred to as the Devil’s drink haha. This fragrance sounds amazing. My favorite from Xerjoff thus far is Naxos, but they have so many heavy hitters. Regards from NY, USA.

  • I still haven’t found the perfect coffee fragrance so I’m on the hunt. And recently, I finally got to try some Xerjoff just to get a feel for the house. I think the coffee and rose combo is in the right hands with them and with Golden Dallah it would be my first time trying it. Otherwise, all the notes seem par for the course for a cool gourmand.

As for my favorite, Cruz Del Sur II blew me away. I’m not as familiar with mango, but on me it was a milky, musky, guava skin. Incredible! I’m looking forward to trying some more and looking forward to winning Golden Dallah. Thanks in advance.

  • Devil’s drink seem very lovely almost too lovely to me!
I wish I could win one tester!

Really enjoyed the write up by Lauryn. Interesting history on how coffee came to evolve into what it has become today. The note breakdown is intriguing…cannabis, hope I can get away with wearing this one without raising the eyebrow of a law enforcement officer. I haven’t tried any Xerjoff offerings to this point. Appreciate the review and generosity of the giveaway. Best from Virginia, USA!

  • Thanks for beautiful review and draw!!
Girlish rose, lactonic tonka, oud and my lovely coffee (I love coffee very much)- this all sound just amazing.
I love Xerjoff very much, and my last perfume-love is Alexandria 2 from Xerjoff.

  • What an inspiring review. It made me want to go make e a cup of coffee with rose petals and cardamon and fire up a joint. So I did. Xerjoff Golden Dallah sounds like a beautiful perfume. I am in the US, thanks for the draw.

  • Been wanting to try Golden Dallah. I’ve been hearing it’s a great coffee scent. Based on the description I believe I’ll enjoy this one. A Café au Lait not too sweet and a bit of spices. Thanks for the draw, Ca

  • Pouring a cup of coffee and lighting up a joint sounds like heaven, so this must be the signature scent I’ve been searching for. I’ve struggled to find a good coffee note in a fragrance yet, but I think one with oud is what I’ve been missing. This sounds amazing, would love to try it! From Idaho, USA

  • patrick_348 says:

As someone who puts cream or milk in my coffee, but never sugar, Golden Dallah sounds right in line with my tastes. I like the idea of coffee and herbs backed up by spices and hints of rose and oud. I also like fragrances that are neither fully masculine nor fully feminine. I have read so much about Xerjoff fragrances but have yet to try one. I am in the US, in NC.

  • Wow! What a description, nice review. Coffee in perfume is really nice but is really difficult to achieve a balanced result. This perfume looks like its harmonious in all its parts to make a glorious coffee perfume. And to mention Coze it makes it even more interesting.
I’d love to win this one!
    I live in the US

    Thanks

I really enjoy coffee based fragrances, and the inclusion of spicy and gourmand notes make it even more appealing. My favorite Xerjoff currently would be either Renaissance or Mefisto. Located in California, CA.

  • I enjoyed the bit about Kaldi finding and eating the coffee and the abbot brewing it into a drink. What really intrigues me about Golden Dallah is how Lauryn discussed the coffee, amber, cocoa, tonka, hazelnut, and spices like cardamom being in the perfume and seemingly clearly perceptible while she mentioned having to search for the rose. I enjoyed Montale Intense Cafe but the rose was a bit strong so Golden Dallah sounds like it might be more to my liking. I’ve sampled and enjoyed a number of Xerjoff fragrances and its tough to choose a favorite. A few I liked a lot are Uden Overdose, Naxos, Mefisto, and 40 Knots. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Thank you Lauryn for the great review and Europerfumes for the kind giveaway. I’ve had experience with coffee houses in the tropics and the addition of the spices to this fragrance brings to mind these cherished memories. I have utmost respect for Xerjoff’s creations with my runaway favorite being Naxos followed by Mefisto Gentiluomo and “More Than Words” rounds up my top three from the house. I’m in USA

  • bigscoundrel says:

This unisex fragrance striking that balance between bitter, milk, and amber is wonderful. I’ve tried Golden Dallah before and I love it. I like many Xerjoff fragrances but some of my favorites are Nio, Renaissance, Alexandria II, and Golden Green. New Jersey, USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I have not smelled this one but I do love Golden Moka. This sounds completely different and had no idea the two were such different scents. I love the interplay between masculine and feminine as well as the mixture of some of my favorite breakfast treats, coffee, coffee cocoa, and chai. I definitely need to try this one. I don’t have a favorite Xerjoff because it’s too hard to decide. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • vickalicious says:

Great post! I’ve only tried a couple of Xerjoff fragrances, but this one sounds amazing!! I loved the historical component in the intro of the post; I found that very interesting. Thank you for the opportunity to win what sounds like an amazing coffee-centric fragrance! Located in the USA.

  • Oh my!! Golden Dallah IS my favorite Xerjoff fragrance!!! It’s gourmand without being sticky/sickly sweet. It’s dark and sexy, yet playful and lively. I love the quote “Golden Dallah smells like a well-made mochaccino sipped in an Amsterdam coffee house, with jangly indie music playing softly in the background. I can almost taste it.” I agree completely with this description!
I live in the USA (PA)

  • I’ve certainly heard of Xerjoff, and I’ve been wanting to try, at least most of, their releases, but I haven’t tried any of their releases yet. I am interested in trying this fragrance; the combination of notes in this fragrance seem enjoyable and interesting. I like the idea of those kinds of spices in combination with, most likely, a high-quality coffee scent. Even though I don’t approve of drug use, I’m interested to see what the hemp-like smell is like. I hope that I win; I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • What appeals to me the most is the prominent coffee note. As a coffee fanatic, the smell of a freshly brewed cup is to die for. The notes accompanying the coffee are quite adventurous and dark, with enough warm notes to make the fragrance sound very comforting. Also, I really enjoyed reading about the history that this fragrance was inspired by. Perfumery is so beautiful in the way that it pulls from these stories to enhance its beauty. For my favorite offering from Xerjoff, I have to go with Alexandria II, it is just a true masterpiece. Thank you for such a generous draw. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • I don’t have a favorite Xerjoff, but I love coffee and this sounds like it hits all the right buttons. Coffee and a toke? Mmmm Thanks to Lauryn for a splendid review and thanks to Euro Perfumes for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • I don’t have a favorite Xerjoff…yet. But this review makes it sound as if Golden Dallah could be in the running. I love coffee. And I love spicy fragrances. Lauryn makes the journey that this scent provides very intriguing. The fact that it’s not too sweet makes it especially appealing. I’m from Oklahoma, USA.

  • I think that the pairing of the coffee to the oud is brilliant and it is something that I wish I could smell. I really like the backstory behind the naming of the fragrance as well! I have never tried Xerjoff though so maybe this can be my first! I live in Florida, US.

  • I love coffee fragrances, I think that they might be among my favorites. What I think is really nice about this fragrance is combining that coffee note with incense which totally makes sense to me. I have never tried Xerjoff though so I don’t have a favourite fragrance! I live in Florida, US.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Xerjoff is up to date brand , with catalog of fragrances looking at the past , but dipping into present , and the future too. With what Lauryn said , Golden Dallah is somewhere in between i think .
“cheeky hits of ganja and an oud center” Nutella and mochaccino mix is comforting one , I need to finally try it . I’ve smelled maybe 10-12 Xerjoff fragrances, but not Golden Dallah. Kobe , Nio , More than Words and all really good .
For clubbing I have Lira , my favorite Xerjoff , and my only bottle.
    Fantastic draw. In USA

  • Lauryn take on Golden Dallah instantly reminded me of me making and eating Mocha and Hazelnut Coffee Cake at my Bakery . I absolutely love coffee heavy pastries, but in US I need to tone down the amount of coffee in it , compared to the original recipe , because most people here do not like it much. For example in the recipe of the cake I’ve mentioned, i should use at least 5-6 teaspoons of instant coffee (in France some use 10) , but here more than 3 , and people would start complaining.
THE best Xerjoff I’ve smelled is called Italica. Exclusive to Harvey Nichols in UK , and really hard to get in US. Smells very, and I mean very similar to a traditional Toffee Almond Cake . It’s a traditional Italian cake. I’m pretty sure the cake was the inspiration behind Italica. One of the best realistically smelling gourmands , and top 3 gourmands in my collection, and I have over 100 , mostly niche gourmands now .
Appreciate Lauryn review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Smoking weed with the stable boy: where do I sign up? I no longer drink coffee (damn gastritis) but I still love the smell. The cardamom and black pepper notes, along with the ganja, are what coffee house dreams are made of. I like the lack of sweetness in Golden Dallah. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Xerjoff.

  • concertslover says:

I have tried and love a few xerjoff creations. I currently have fars and Naxos. Interestingly, I do not like coffee at all but I love the aroma of it brewing. I find it intriguing how you describe the milky smooth chocolate coffee combo. From USA. Thank you.

  • Great review!
Classic dark roast coffee, sweet and resinous sweetness of amber, cocoa and tonka – it is like a yummy drink, Sounds amazing!!!
Xerjoff always do fantastic perfumes, I have Mefisto, Fars, Al – Khat and going to purchase other.
I would happy to win this beauty.

  • I love love coffe and coffee notes in perfumery too.
Thank you for interesting short info about coffee culture.
I enjoyed this article!! And so interesting to smell coffee with pepper ️- Hmmm…it will be great! And with tonka and amber will be round, yummy.

Thank you for the beautiful review Lauryn.

I personally really enjoy the idea of coffee based perfume and I haven’t been able to find one that I enjoy because of the sweetness. This one sounds like a joy with the coffee, oud, ganja, resins and the milky tonka.

I’ve often sees coffee in association with Vetiver and other notes, but the idea of these green notes intrigue me.

I’ve been experimenting with coffee tinctures to try and make my own coffee fragrance

I’ve only had the chance to smell some xerjoff kobe, which I like.

    Cheers from WI, USA.

  • This description of the fragrance is what really caught my attention and has me eager to try this!

“delectably dark, off-sweet concoction that mixes up the most delicious aspects of cocoa, cardamom chai and French roast”
My favorite Xerjoff is lira. Thank you for the draw and good luck to everyone!

  • We have a classic one today Well at least i think Golden Dallah would become a classic is a few years, like Naxos, Nio, Kobe and Lira did.
Xerjoff is one best niche brands ever.Their portfolio is vast, you’ll easily find a fragrance you’ll enjoy, no matter what your taste is. At this moment I own 6 Xerjoff bottles . My favorite one is Mamluk.
Golden Dallah goes through a lot of phases, it hits you with a blast of allspice in the opening, then comes the green coffee, and to me it’s oriental semi gourmand in the base. It’s also powdery too.
I’ve heard from a few people , they get marijuana, it’s not just Lauryn, but I don’t get even traces of it.
All the profiles I already follow on Instagram.
    Fantastic opportunity, thanks.

  • I love well made coffee fragrances, i should definitely check Golden Dallah.
When I think about Xerjoff pictures of Mefisto always comes to mind. Being a barber my love for aromatic and citrusy fragrances comes naturally. Lavender is prominent, but don’t push it into mature territory. Super classy, yet not overly aggressive fragrance. It also lasts at least seven hours, to me that’s fine.
Mefisto is more dressed up , day time occasions scent, but Golden Dallah feels like super sexy one , made for a club or bar. Starts spicy green and funky because of the ganja, but changes into mochaccino with cardamom, I’ll look for samples right now.
    Thanks Lauren , Europerfumes

  • “but want to keep the sugar on the downlow”

Common sense. I like sweet fragrances, but coffee should smell and taste dark, with bare minimum of sweetness, if any.
Honestly i never heard of jangly indie music , I had to Google it up , but what got my attention was
“Golden Dallah smells like a well-made mochaccino sipped in an Amsterdam coffee house”
Incense and coffee is such a great combination, I hope the smoky part will be strong enough through the whole life of the fragrance. I also like to put some raw cocoa powder in my coffee, Golden Dallah is a winner in my book.
As overly vain person , wearing Xerjoff fragrance is a special experience . I feel untouchable like Eliot Ness .My favorites are Lira and Opera . Love them equally .
I’m more than excited , USA
    Regards

  • The Ethiopian legend about how coffee was supposedly discovered was one of the enjoyable parts of Lauryn’s review, but I’m also intrigued by the fact that this is a coffee based fragrance that is drowned out in sweetness. Too many coffee fragrances are plagued by excessive, overbearing sweetness and it sounds like Golden Dallah is an exception. Cruz del Sur I and Al-Khatt are two of my most favorite Xerjoff creations. Thanks so much for the chance! Oregon, US.

  • Xerjoff fragrances are multifaceted , and Golden Dallah is prime example. Since I have a sample, I can tell.
I know it sounds like easy to wear fragrance, still i don’t think you should buy it without sampling. Not sure it’s because I’m a woman, but marijuana is strong on me , the spices too. I would not compare it to mochaccino in Amsterdam, but to Masala Coffee. I know it’s not in the notes, but I can smell milk , star anise and cinnamon easily.
Not for everyone , but to me , undoubtedly a stunner .
Naxos was my favorite Xerjoff for a long, long time, but after sampling La Capitale early December , I now have a new favorite. Naxos I do own, La Capitale I don’t.
    Generous giveaway, thank you. USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Xerjoff Golden Dallah appeals to me because of how descriptive Lauryn is in her review from learning about the history of coffee to learning about this combination of coffee, green herbal qualities, oud, and gourmand elements to make something that is super unique and sounds truly delightful. Currently my favorite Xerjoff is Naxos. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Mmmm…”dark off-sweet” coffee fragrance sounds divine. I have only tried a couple from this house and would love to try more. Thank you for the review and the draw. I’m in the US.
