Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022

Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022 Karl Topham (l) and Michael Devine (r)

Now that you have heard from Ermano and me, (our Top Ten Perfumes of 2022 here) and (The Best Fragrances of 2022 here), Ida and Lauryn,  and Emmanuelle and Nicoleta, we continue our Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022 overviews today with Sr. Editor Karl Topham who lives in the UK and Senior Contributor  and Fragrance Foundation Finalist Michael Devine who resides in New Jersey. Their selections have two direct brand overlaps, but perfumers Nathalie Feisthauer, Dominique Ropion and Manuel Cross appear on both. Now it’s time to reveal their respective Top Ten Perfumes of 2022 –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

2022 was a breakthrough year in many ways; as we once again had the opportunity to pack our passports and bags to set off to far away climbs and experience perfumes, contemporary brands and discuss their merits with new and old friends. Fortunately, I was able to visit Esxence in Milan, travel to the middle east, western, central and eastern Europe to take in the olfactory vibes. There was a newfound positivity and expectation in the air and goodness did the perfumers and brands deliver! -Karl Topham, Senior Editor and UK Brand Ambassador

Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022

In alphabetical order, here are my Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022 that made it a year to remember for all the right reasons.

Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian): The indomitable Cécile Zarokian once again teamed up with Customer Experience Officer Renauld Salmon of Amouage to create a tobacco fragrance uniting Cuba and Oman in a multifaceted and incredibly rich perfume both in terms of olfactive profile and historical connections. It is an exploration of cigar smoke from top to base blending the smoky facets with subtle sweetness and depth. There are aromatic qualities, dried fruits, and a spiky peppery nuance which blends with a unique prunol accord. Wearing it is an absolute treat, make no mistake, this is a grown-up scent for aficionados who love to dive deep into the orchestration of an ingredient and its multiple layers.

Astrophil & Stella Madame M(Nathalie Feisthauer): If there is one thing, I have learned about Nathalie Feisthauer it is her utter proficiency in seductive scents. Madame M is stacked full of sumptuous notes which create a fusion of carnality. It is a veil of subtle eroticism that creeps up on you. Luscious fruits, spices and resinous woods combine in an explosive concoction which comes with a rouge flacon, a red warning sign to those in its path. My go to for intimate date nights has always been Vapeurs DIablotines also created by Madame Feisthauer, Madame M is the scent I wish for a partner to wear. It truly is undeniably a siren in my humble opinion.

Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos): I waxed lyrical about Killer Vavoom earlier this year and my opinion has strengthened throughout time. Husen Baba has created a unique concept where all Azman perfumes are based around oud. His decision to enlist perfumer Miguel Matos in creating Killer Vavoom was inspired. Each wearing is a clandestine contract with the devil. Molten chocolate, thick iris concrete intermingling with a chypre underbelly? Oh, the body and heart yearn for it! I think we have discovered the future of artistic perfumery from the Middle East taking the soul of Arabic perfumery and twisting it unctuously with a western nose. Bravo!

Der Duft Privilege (Nathalie Feisthauer): This fragrance landed in my post box days ago and is a brand-new release. Given freedom of expression by owner Anslem Skogstad created by Master Perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer It is a personal interpretation of the word ‘privilege’ and an olfaction ode to nature. The greenery, water, woods and sea available to her. Nature in abstraction is how I would describe it. Whilst there are a vast number of notes to unpack the impression, I receive upon wearing Privilege is happiness. Particularly apparent on my skin are blackcurrant, rhubarb, sea notes, cedar and guaiac wood. The best fragrance I have smelled from Der Duft and one I will ensure is a staple in my collection.

 Best perfumes of 2022

Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022

Essential Parfums Fig Infusion (Nathalie Lorson): I have huge respect for Geraldine Archambault founder and owner of Essential Parfums. Built upon the qualities of simplicity and authenticity the collection is of a high standard and places each perfumer front and center. Fig Infusion combines a juicy and unctuous fig with black tea and sandalwood to produce a fragrance which performs as it should, highlighting fabulous natural raw materials in an unpretentious and clear style. It performs magnificently and gives the wearer security in the fact that they are experiencing top class perfumery done in an elegant way. Furthermore, Essential Parfums represents best in class whilst giving consumers their ‘bang for their buck.’

Initio Parfums Paragon: A return to form from a house I fell in love with some years back. The most recent release as part of the triumvirate of the Hedonist Collection alongside Rehab and Musk Therapy, Paragon keeps the fresh and musky experience to the fore. However, the introduction of white sage, plum and palo santo adds originality and a fresh direction to a versatile and eminently wearable perfume. Hours in and still performing magnificently the addition of sandalwood comes to the fore as a beautiful finish and there is a smidge of agarwood to round off this classy and smooth composition. On a side note, I wish the brand had promoted the perfumer of the fragrance yet unknown, but I have my suspicions on who might be the mystery perfumer.

Jusbox Perfumes Visionary Eye (Dominique Ropion): Possibly the most avant-garde perfume I selected for this list Visionary Eye was created to represent the authenticity of one’s truest self. A collision of cultural change and Bowie’s artistic genius this fragrance highlights a deep and creamy iris surrounded by aromatic and explosive notes such as Ceylon LMR cinnamon and absinthe. I was so intrigued by the story that I packed my belongings and headed to Berlin, the city that inspired the scent. Whilst Berlin is less in a time of flux in 2022 than the late 1970s / early 1980s I could notice the excitement and futuristic elements which inspired the creation of Visionary Eye by one of the premier perfumers in the world today, Dominique Ropion.

Matière Premiere French Flower (Aurelien Guichard): I was able to witness the passion and positivity of Aurelien Guichard (founder and perfumer of Matière Premiere) in London this year. His mindfulness, appreciation and cultivation of raw materials and a thirst to push boundaries were apparent. French Flower combines both honoring traditional processes of tuberose via enfleurage and harnessing new ways of invigorating our senses with Nigerian Ginger, Chinese Tea Leaf and a Pear accord, which creates a green, effervescent and slightly narcotic experience. Distinct from the commercial way tuberose can be used in perfumery, French Flower is a night blooming tuberose with bite.

Rogue Perfumery Rostracto (Manuel Cross): Manuel Cross is well-known for his neo-vintage creations and respected for his reverence for classical perfumery. Rostracto is a venture into the unknown. Rose done as a cubist painting presented, here the rose is splintered amongst an urban environment where the petals, stem and thorns seemingly appear and disappear whilst green and amber tones show themselves. Deeply emotional and original, Rostracto will challenge one’s nose to decipher its emotive message. If you ever heard the poem ‘The rose that grew from concrete’ then this fragrance might well chime with you.

Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels (Isabelle Doyen & Camille Goutal): In my opinion Voyages Imaginaires is a premiere natural perfumery house, who deliver on producing scents of incredible quality and durability. Their latest release is a whirl of chocolatey and solar vibrancy which struck me upon first sniff. The combination of bright and subtle sweetness would have knocked me right off my feet if I hadn’t been sitting on my first encounter with it. Delicate florals seep through into the brain and my limbic system was ablaze with gourmand, woody notes and this concert of raw materials so deftly orchestrated caused me to stop and take in what I perceive as a masterpiece in natural perfumery.

Best Limited Edition: Jeroboam Lab Edition celebrate the launch of Jeroboam eight years ago  with  a limited Lab Edition of Jeroboam Gozo, usually presented in a bright orange flacon, this special release is presented in a transparent glass bottle with an engraved insignia revealing the extract in its truest form, the same iconic scent.

Karl Topham Senior Editor and UK Brand Ambassador

2022 seemed to be the tock to 2021’s tick. For the first time in a long while, I found myself able to move on from things that were weighing me down, push through fear and refocus on what’s important. I put family above all and this pivot provided the perspective to understand what truly matters and what I can let go of. Fragrance-wise, I tried to reign in frivolous purchasing and only add bottles that truly spoke to me. Life’s too short (and my cabinet’s too small) for things that don’t move me. The perfumes that follow truly provided an emotional connection and re-established my appreciation for beauty in the world and the things that matter most.-Michael Devine, Senior Editor

What are the Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022

In alphabetical order, Michael’s Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022

Roja Parfums Apex (Roja Dove):  Roja has proven once again he’s the master of the neoteric classic—modern compositions with a vintage feel.Apex (in both its EDP and parfum concentrations) is an assured, but approachable, chypre that’s built like an ‘80’s powerhouse. Time-honored and timeless, Apex is a kaleidoscope of greens and browns: fir balsam, galbanum, cypress, oakmoss and patchouli that, per the clever marketing, suggest the pulse of the jungle. While you may not rule the jungle, you’ll rule the boardroom. Boom!

Areej le Dore Beauty and the Beast (Russian Adam): Oud + Rose—it’s a tale as old as time. So, what does it take to stand out in a crowded field? Substance AND style. Russian Adam, known for his use of luxurious (and often costly) materials, distilled real Indian oud in rose water, adding it to a composition totaling 30% real oud, his most generous dose of oud in any of his creations. The perfume opens with a roar but grows softer as the tale unfolds, tempered by French cocoa and a rose that’s dewy, pink and cheerful. A hand-in-paw waltz in a candle-lit ballroom. Like all Areej le Dore creations, it’s a limited edition. Oud connoisseurs (and those looking for a next-level oud) should check it out before the last petal falls.

Thomas De Monaco Eau Couer (Maurus Bachmann): As I wrote in my ÇaFleureBon review of this spectacular release, “Once in a rare while, I discover a perfume that reminds me why I love perfume. It’s a discovery that’s reassuring in the acknowledgement that fragrance can be heart-meltingly beautiful; it’s also eternally baffling as I ponder the intrinsic magnificence of the invisible.” Eau Coeur is a breathtaking fragrance that’s on par with Mr. De Monaco’s first release (and industry obsession) Raw Gold. Thomas De Monaco has once again struck gold! Stunning!

For the Scent of It “Folk Tale” (Michael Schrammel):With no published accords and no scent profile, Folk Tale is an olfactive choose-your-own-adventure. I don’t want to spoil the journey with my own descriptors, so I’ll just say it smells fantastic. Beyond that, I’ll defer to Michelyn’s 2022’s rising star Michael Schrammel, who describes his creation: “I have always loved the idea of a community-based fragrance where no notes are listed and people can discuss with each other what they think they smell. The name Folk Tale comes from the idea that folk tales change over the years from person to person, writer to writer. That is exactly the thought process on this fragrance. The next step was coming up with a ‘difficult-to-decipher’ scent, and that took some time. One day, I may disclose the notes and accords I intended to be in there. Just maybe, the tale I intended to tell will change as well…”

Aaron Terrence Hughes Hard Candy (Aaron Terrence Hughes): Hard Candy is the golden ticket into the Wonka-esque world of ATH. With elements of his previous creations (while remaining wholly original), Hard Candy unfolds like a trip through Aaron’s factory. Cheeky names aside, Aaron’s collection is wonderful and all seem to be predicated on one overarching theme: they just smell so good. Hard Candy is sweet, dark and a lot naughty. You may not make Santa’s list, but you’ll make mine.

Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M.La Croix (Manuel Cross):L’Homme M.LaCroix is an homage to the original rogues of Rogue Perfumery: Manuel Cross’ ancestors Allen and Corneleius LaCroix who, for “nefarious smuggling activities,” were ousted from France in 1735 and fled to Ireland. Created using all-natural botanicals, L’Homme M. Lacroix tells the tale of their passage, with cedar to suggest the planks of the ship in which they escaped, oakmoss to suggest ink, tar and seaweed and a strapping leather accord for the renegades in all of us. Truth be told, I find it utterly refined; perhaps these bad boys, once settled in Ireland, took up golf at the local country club.

 Best perfumes of 2022

Top Ten Best Perfumes 2022

Gallagher Fragrances Mists of Time (Daniel Gallagher):Mists of Time is a curious concoction from one of our favorite indie noses. Grounded in the sweet, earthy-patchouli DNA we love from the house of Gallagher, this time with an unexpected twist of blackcurrant, candied orange and mineralic notes. Brilliant! I wore this rich and bold composition for every minute of a week-long summer vacation at a lakeside retreat and now, every time I smell it, I’m transported to misty mornings and starlit camp-side nights.

Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits (Julien Rasquinet and Dominique Ropion): Instantly obsessed! Immediately my new favorite sweater-weather fragrance, Raised Spirits, from a masterful duo, combines rum-soaked caramelized sugar with a heart of what I perceive as warm chocolate pudding. Despite these gourmand accords, the whole is almost abstract—a feeling of sweet warmth and of home. Perfect for the holidays and cozy winter nights. Bonus points for the brilliant triple-entendre title! Kudos to Steven for his creative direction.

Amouage Royal Tobacco (Cecile Zarokian): After last year’s triumph that was Silver Oud (my favorite release of 2021), Amouage has teamed up once again with Cecil Zarokian to create—ok, I’ll say it—an absolute masterpiece. Royal Tobacco smolders with frankincense in the opening and base, surrounded by tobacco absolute, licorice root, benzoin, vanilla, oud and a score of regal accords that will lift you up as your knees grow weak. It has the rich and opulent Amouage-ness while remaining totally unique. What’s a bolder assertion than “masterpiece”? Royal Tobacco was the best perfume release of 2022.

Zoologist Sacred Scarab (Sultan Pasha): Sacred Scarab is the shaft of golden light through the dust of an Egyptian tomb. Sultan Pasha, known for his exquisite attars, has crafted a stunningly wearable journey back in time. Not just to ancient Egypt, but to the vintage French perfumes of the Golden Era. With its opening of blue lotus and plum wine which swirl amid an incense heart, Sacred Scarab is a treasure and one of Zoololgist’s best releases to date. Take the journey.

Best Designer Fragrance: It wasn’t until after I’d put the above list together that I realized I’ve included only indie/niche/artisan perfumes in my top ten. While I have nothing against a great designer release, my tastes this year clearly leaned in one direction. But! If I were to have had eleven best releases of 2022, there’d have been one outstanding designer fragrance on this page. So, let’s add a new category for Best Designer Fragrance of 2022 and put the spotlight on City of Angels from Louis Vuitton. Such a fantastic and fun creation, City of Angels by Jacques Cavallier smells like pink dust. With notes of lime, blood orange, tiare flower and sandalwood, this ode to Los Angeles at night is sweet, vibrant and carefree.

In the Karl’s selection I have found 2 perfumes that I really LOVE: Killer vavoom by Azman and Privilege by Der Duft. The Amouage one by CÉCILE ZAROKIAN seems also a great opción. The special mention to Jeroboam sounds interesting also I had not the opportunity to try any Jeroboam perfume yet.
I must confess that I have not tried any of the perfumes selected by Michael. Anyway Navitus, hard Candy and Areej le Dorée are in my wishlist of perfumes to try.
I am writing from Spain and I would like to win Killer Vavoom by Azman.
    BEST regards!!

  • Another great year end list.
I still have not smelled the Royal Tobacco and am looking forward to that.
I would pick the Navitus Raised Spirits for my winner.
I love how your editors bring new houses to your readers.
    Thanks
    Oklahoma USA

  • Really like Michael’s picks, although it’s great to see Rogue in both lists! Never experienced Lorson’s work with fig, so Fig Infusion immediately piqued my interest. L’eau des Immortels makes another appearance as well. But I did get to try Apex edp recently and can confirm Michael’s assessment. Very much 80s powerhouse chypre vibes (Roja loves his chypres after all) with a good dose of cypress, patchouli and oakmoss. Russian Adam’s creations also never fail to amaze. Superb materials and I just love that bottle design. But the star for me, and perhaps my fav of the bunch is Manuel’s new L’homme M. La Croix, paying homage once again to his french familial roots. The leather accord is wonderful imo. Still need to try Sacred Scarab which, in a recent interview with Sultan, he apparently had to convince Victor on, but nailed on the first try. lol Can’t imagine that happens very often. Finally, I’m gonna have to agree on the title of Raised Spirits. Love a little word play myself and it seems Steven does too. Warm chocolate pudding with rum-soaked sugar you say? My stomach is nodding. Shame on you stomach. lol I thought we had an understanding? What’s that? It’s still the holidays? You little….alright, I cave. Raised Spirits would be my stomach’s, I mean my pick. Seems appropriate for the upcoming New Year’s celebration after all! Here’s to another great year of perfume covered by the Cafleurebon team. Cheers from Canada.

  • There are 2 small typos i saw while reading, it’s

Eau Coeur and not Eau Couer
    and
Dominique Ropion and not Dominque Ropion

Esxence 22 was awesome, I can tell.

Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian)

“There are aromatic qualities, dried fruits, and a spiky peppery nuance which blends with a unique prunol accord. Wearing it is an absolute treat, make no mistake, this is a grown-up scent for aficionados who love to dive deep into the orchestration of an ingredient and its multiple layers.”

My opinion is basically the same as Karl Topham. Unlike Michelyn, we both don’t smell much licorice.
My favorite brand and upscale fragrance. In Royal Tobacco i see some strong One Thousand and One Nights , and Scheherazade connections. The resinous base, and the plum, together with the tobacco are the other most interesting aspects of the fragrance. To me the unexpected sweetness comes more from the plum. My favorite Amouage is still Jubilation XXV , but Royal Tobacco is up there too .

Astrophil & Stella Madame M (Nathalie Feisthauer)
Don’t know the fragrance, and the brand. Sounds sexy

    Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos):
Interesting how ,again we partially agree about AZMAN Killer Vavoom , the prunes and chocolate are so beautiful, the iris too ,but unlike me , both Michelyn and Karl never said anything about the strong boozy feel i get from Killer Vavoom.

    Der Duft Privilege (Nathalie Feisthauer):
With so many Cafleurebon contributors liking it, I decided to sample the fragrance

Essential Parfums Fig Infusion (Nathalie Lorson)
Price wise Best fig fragrance available.

    Initio Parfums Paragon
Nice , exactly what I thought it would smell.Paragon would share some similarities with the other two Hedonist fragrances
Rehab is one of my husband’s favorite fragrances. I like the lavender and palo santo , i’m happy for the addition of plum , black pepper in Paragon.

Jusbox Perfumes Visionary Eye (Dominique Ropion)

    “Ceylon LMR cinnamon and absinthe”

I’m a liquor lover, and to me the absinthe/wormwood is barely there.
Relaxing artistic iris fragrances are right up my alley, and I’m a fan of Dominique Ropion

Matière Premiere French Flower (Aurelien Guichard):
Narcotic or not , French Flower is too animalic for me , it’s just too much.

    Rogue Perfumery Rostracto (Manuel Cross)

“stem and thorns seemingly appear and disappear whilst green”

Emotional I agree , petals too , but anything like stem, thorns and green i smell. Rostracto i think it’s impressive, one of those fragrances that grabs you , and don’t want to let go.
In Rostracto I also like the jammy rose , smoke and resins aromas . Seductive, provocative, flirtatious fragrance.

Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels (Isabelle Doyen & Camille Goutal):
It’s confirmed by all of you, natural masterpiece with…extraordinary longevity

Best Limited Edition: Jeroboam Lab Edition ( i added the name of Vanina Muracciole )
Christmasy, cinnamon, mint, patchouli and rock candies on top of tuberose.

“Life’s too short (and my cabinet’s too small) for things that don’t move me”

    Well said

Roja Parfums Apex (Roja Dove):Classic chypre

Areej le Dore Beauty and the Beast (Russian Adam )
I like French cocoa and a rose that’s dewy

Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur (Maurus Bachmann):
    It has to be special

For the Scent of It “Folk Tale” (Michael Schrammel):
    Abstract fragrance

Aaron Terrence Hughes Hard Candy (Aaron Terrence Hughes):
Aaron is such a talented guy . Hard Candy i own , it’s sweet, dark and a bit naughty , just a bit

Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M.La Croix (Manuel Cross):
My favorite Rogue Perfumery is Derviche II , the macerated fruits and the Cherry Liqueur are so well done, and L’Homme M.La Croix i just too mature for me to wear.

Gallagher Fragrances Mists of Time (Daniel Gallagher)
There’s quite a bit of contrast in Mists of Time, between, the sea and the forest, the sweetness and the cypress-tobacco base. Unlike Michael , to me the patchouli is somewhere to be seen

Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits (Julien Rasquinet and Dominique Ropion):
Raised Spirits from Steven and Navitus turned back time to my mid 20s , when I was drinking Eggnog Latte, heavily spiked with a few extra dark rum shots.

Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian)
Michael Devine and Michelyn share the same opinion about the fragrance. You both smell liquorice, me and Karl not so much. Masterpiece it is , still my favorite Amouage is Jubilation XXV , but Royal Tobacco is up there too .

    Best Designer Fragrance:
I don’t know even one of Luis Vuitton fragrances. Never been interested in the brand, clothes, shoes, bags or fragrance

I enjoyed all 3 hours I’ve spent on Cafleurebon, I think I’ll treat myself now with 2016 Domaine Lecheneaut Les Pruliers , lovely Pinot Noir I highly recommend to all wine cognoseurs. Cheers
AZMAN Killer Vavoom I’d love to win
Thank you for the time , and effort, and for the opportunity

  • Another great list of perfumes for me to check out. Can’t say I’ve sample enough of the fragrances of this list to make an official judgement on the list by Karl and Michael, but I have heard of many of them, which one that especially draws me in is “For the scent of it” that I discovered from another prior post and wanted to order a discovered set from since. Based on what I heard and the popularity of some of these fragrances, I think that these are both really well made and detailed lists. I’m surprised to see Louis Vuitton is one of the best designer perfumes as I haven’t really heard much about their fragrances, but I’ll definitely have to try a sample next time I get a chance. If I were to win my choice would be Privilege, however, the rest sound amazing as well, and would be glad to have. From TX, USA

  • It must be a monumental task to narrow down so many fragrances to 10.
Kudos to Karl and Michael for putting this list.
I only have sniff one or two from the list.
I may say, I am so glad for Manuel Cross been on the list.
His interview with Steven showed how humble but also how perfectionist he is.

It must be a monumental task to narrow down so many fragrances to 10.
Kudos to Karl and Michael for putting this list.
I only have sniff one or two from the list.
I may say, I am so glad for Manuel Croix. If o get the opportunity to win, I would be delighted to get L’Homme M.DeCroix.

    Happy 2023 to all.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Dear Karl and Michael, A superb read and I concur again on quite a number of your selections, Cow, Sacred Scarab, Amouage Royal Tobacco, Privilege, etc. In fact all of Karl’s selections completely. Not entering the givaway, but thank you again for the article.

  • While I prefer Karl’s top ten, both Karl and Michael have great tastes and have very nice selections. I agree with Michael that family is first always.
I haven’t smelled Der Duft Privilege, but it sounds impressive, I would love to smell “happiness”. Happy new year to everyone. Hugs from Mexico !

  • Thank you, Karl and Michael, for taking on the task of choosing faves from such a strong year. I was thrilled to see some of my personal favorites included, such as Rostracto, Hard Candy, and Folk Tale. I’ve been digging deep into indie and smaller niche brands and all three of those fragrances were proof it is well worth your time to try these up and coming houses. Of course there were many I have yet to try but are high on my list to get my nose on in 2023. Paragon, Mists of Time, Visionary Eye and Sacred Scarab are all on my “short list”. If I were to be chosen as winner, I would have to go for Azman Killer Vavoom, as it is at the pinnacle of my must-try list and Karl’s description of wearing it as a “clandestine contract with the devil” further solidifies my choice. • It’s always a pleasure and a gift to read your top choices for each year, a tool to navigate through so much novelties, i would very much to try Azman’s Killer Vavoom or Rostracto by Rogue Perfumery, thanks for the chance, from EU! And Happy Holidays!

  • waxed lyrical about Killer Vavoom earlier this year and my opinion has strengthened throughout time. Bravo! A brilliant description by Karl this house and this fragrance sounds like a magical concoction. waxed lyrical about Killer Vavoom earlier this year and my opinion has strengthened throughout time. Husen Baba has created a unique concept where all Azman perfumes are based around oud. His decision to enlist perfumer Miguel Matos in creating Killer. From Michael’s list Areej le dore Beauty and the Beast really stood out because I love Rose and oud. If I am lucky I would love to win killer Vavoom. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Great picks by Karl and Michael respectively. I am intrigued by Areej ke dore Beauty and the Beast and Killer Vavoom. I loved Michael comments that he will avoid frivolous purchases and focus on perfumes that speak to him. Thanks a lot just in case I win I would like to win Killer Vavoom

  • Another great list of perfumes for me to check out, great job, Karl and Michael! Opus XIV Royal Tobacco by Amouage has been heavily praised, and included in top 10’s by the editors here at Cafleurebon, and I can definately agree with that. Cecile Zarokian has masterfully created another instant classic (who could have thought?). Another trend that I’ve noticed in the top 10’s thus far is the inclusion of Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels, which I have ordered a sample of. I hope it lives up to the hype.

Great options for the giveaway, and I had a hard time picking one that I want over the others, but I ended up choosing Killer Vavoom. Chocolate and plum sounds like a match made in heaven. Thanks.

    I reside in Sweden.

  • These are some very interesting choices, Karl and Michael. I can’t say I agree with all of them, but I do appreciate your thoughts. There’s been a lot of diversity between everyone’s choices thus far, which I cherish because otherwise it would be a stale read with every new top 10. Some fragrances have been a red thread, including:
    Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels
    Der Duft Privilege
    Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV
I have ordered samples of them all, because they are so highly rated among the ranks at Cafleurebon.

If I were lucky enough to win I would like to win the 50ml bottle of Killer Vavoom. You seem to highly rate the house of Azman so I’d like to check it out myself.

    I live in Sweden/EU.

  • These lists are a joy to read, and this one is no different. Some of these I recognize, others not, but one red thread is that they represent superb quality and the art of making fragrances. It made me happy to see some of the fragrances I myself put in my top 10 represented here as well. Such as, Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV and Initio Parfums Paragon. One thing that sets apart Cafleurebon from other fragrance blogs is the fact that they try to put a spotlight on up-and-coming perfume houses as well as indie/artisan houses. It’s very possible we’d never hear of those any other way.

I would like to win the bottle of Killer Vavoom, which sounds absolutely lovely. Thank you for this article and giveaway!

    Writing from Sweden.

  • Each and every time I enter the CaFleureBon website, I’m assured to discover something new: new perfumes, new houses, new ways to understand perfume. This list brings this feeling, tenfold.
I’m happy to see Nathalie Feisthauer heavily represented in the list. She has put in a lot of hard work during the year and it has most certainly paid off. With masterpieces such as Cow by Zoologist, Madame M by Astrophil & Stella and Privilege by Der Duft, she’s in the running for perfumer of the year, in my opinion.

Although choosing feels incredibly difficult, I’d like to enter the draw for Killer Vavoom by Azman. Karl’s description of it made me hungry, to say the least, hehe.

Writing happily from Sweden, EU 🙂

  • I am pleased to see Amouage Royal Tobacco listed as one of Karl’s top ten fragrances of 2022. This is yet another reason I must try this ASAP. Since Amouage has always been one of my favorite houses, there is no excuse for putting off testing Royal Tobacco any longer. I have no doubt it is a scent for aficionados with multiple layers.

I have not tried Madame M by Astrophil & Stella, but it sounds beautiful. Fruits, spices, and resinous woods likely make for an excellent date night fragrance. The rouge flacon is quite gorgeous, as well.

I am not surprised to see Killer Vavoom listed as another favorite. Molten chocolate and thick iris must create an intoxicating fragrance.

Reading Karl’s comments regarding Der Duft Privilege led to me believe this is quite an optimistic fragrance. Few fragrances are happiness in a bottle to me, but it sounds like Privilege is just that for multiple people.

I tend to enjoy fig when it’s on the woodier or milkier side as compared to green and leafy fig. Essential Parfums Fig Infusion sounds intriguing with its notes of fig, black tea, and sandalwood. I love black tea, so I can imagine this would be quite calming for me.

I have yet to try Paragon from Initio, but I do love palo santo. The note seems to be having a resurgence in perfumery, which is not surprising as it’s a calming note. Paragon does sound like an easy-to-wear and smooth composition.

I absolutely love absinthe and cinnamon. I have to admit that I overlooked Jusbox Visionary Eye when it was released. However, after reading Karl’s comments it sounds like a must-try for me. The combination of notes wouldn’t have led me to believe it comes across as avant-garde, but I am very intrigued.

Karl’s description of French Flower is beautiful. I truly enjoy tuberose but generally stay away from indolic tuberose. Effervescent and slightly narcotic tuberose sounds right up my alley.

I completely agree with Karl’s review of Rostracto. The poem “The rose that grew from concrete” couldn’t be any more perfect for this rose fragrance.

Another vote for L’Eau Des Immortels as a top ten fragrance pick of 2022; it has quickly moved up to the top of my test list. If Karl believes it’s a masterpiece in natural perfumery, there really is no reason to wait to try what I only imagine is a stunning fragrance.

While I haven’t tried the fragrance, I do like the limited edition transparent bottle for Gozo. I much prefer it to the orange bottle.

I loved Michael’s introduction. I also tried to focus on what’s truly important (which is family) and I have tried to only keep true loves in my fragrance collection.

I have not tried Roja Apex, but Michael’s description has been curious. I love anything with prominent fir balsam, so I may need to test this one. Anything that evokes an ’80s powerhouse piques my interest.

While I have not tested Beauty and the Beast, oud and rose is an excellent combination (even if it’s widely used). I imagine Beauty and the Beast really does open with a roar with a composition containing 30 % real oud.

I had overlooked Thomas De Monaco Eau Couer, but after seeing it listed as numerous peoples’ favorites from 2022, it sounds like a must-try. If Michael says it’s breathtaking, it is absolutely worth trying.

I don’t believe I was aware of Folk Tale before reading Michael’s review of it. I enjoyed reading about the inspiration behind the fragrance. I am very intrigued.

I love gourmand fragrances but I don’t generally enjoy overly sweet or cloying. Hard Candy sounds quite delectable and I am glad it retains some darkness.

While I usually have a hard time with seaweed notes, I am sure that L’Homme M.La Croix is a high-quality creation. It does sound refined, as Michael points out.

I love Gallagher Fragrances, but I’m embarrassed to admit I have not tried Mists of Time. I love patchouli and candied orange together; the added mineral notes must create a unique concoction. Anything that evokes misty mornings and starlit camp-side nights for someone sounds like a must-try for me.

I have tried many Navitus fragrances, but I’ve yet to test Raised Spirits. Michael’s description of it just confirms that I need to try it ASAP. Warm chocolate pudding and rum-soaked caramelized sugar is all I need to hear; what a delectable combination. This does sound perfect for the holidays!

Another vote for Amouage Royal Tobacco and another reason this is staying at the top of my test list. Amouage fragrances are generally opulent and rich, so it’s not surprising Royal Tobacco retains this Amouage DNA. There are a few Amouage fragrances that I consider masterpieces, so to hear Michael use the term for this fragrance really has me wanting to try it now.

I am glad to see Zoologist as another favorite. Each Zoologist fragrance is a journey; their originality and uniqueness always stand out.

Like Michael, my tastes generally lean towards niche and indie fragrances. However, there are some amazing designer creations. I have not tried City of Angels, but I have tried a few from Louis Vuitton. It sounds like City of Angels is perfect for LA.

Thank you, Karl and Michael, for the excellent reviews of your top ten 2022 fragrances. Thank you to all four houses/perfumers for their generous giveaways. I would love the opportunity to win Navitus Raised Spirits; it sounds right up my alley! I am located in the USA.

  • Thank you for such in depth reviews. Royal Tobacco sounds great, with its frankincense and licorice. I also love the green jungle vibe of Apex. If lucky, I’d choose Killer Vavoom, Rostracto or Privilege. Mich USA

  • Lots of great perfume listed here: Amouage offers a great variaty of fragrance and the new line is very interesting, even though I think Royal Tobacco is a bit too licoricy. Azman is a great brand which I recently discovered and I am waiting to receive my first perfume from them. Then Rogue, which is a favourite of mine: i have Bon Monsieur and Mousse Illuminee and I think the idea behind the brand is fantastic.
I would like to enter for Azman – Killer Vavoom and Rogue L’Homme M.LaCroix
    Riccardo Italy EU

  • I want to try most of the list, and it’s epic! Amouage Royal Tobacco and Navitus raised spirits jumped out at me the most. I’d like to win Raised Spirits. New Jersey, USA

  • Another interesting list! I love seeing the overlap, and how certain perfumes seem to win everyone over. Again, I have a few to add to my sample/smell list. Thank you, CFB editors, for all your hard work!
If I win the draw, I’d love to have Rogue Perfumery’s Rostracto. I’m in WV, USA

  • Elated to see another Azman creation making another 2022 top ten list! I have tried couple of perfumes noted here, bought a few based on your reviews (French Flower is still my favorite), and dreamt to make my own one day, thanks to the inspiration you all provide. Thank you!

If I were to win, I would chose a bottle of Killer Vavoom. All my admiration goes to Husan Baba!

    I live in Portugal/EU

  • I appreciate another list of fragrances I need to add to my fragrance wishlist. Amouage Royal Tobacco, I really love Amouage and the different types and quality of the fragrances offered. The description of royal tobacco sounds so appealing. Killer Vavoom by Azman sounds great and Azman as a house sounds very appealing and I would really like to experience Azman perfumes. There are so many other perfumes that have been highlighted on these lists that I will like to try- French flower (Matiere premiere), fig infusion (essential parfums), mists of time (Gallagher fragrances) and beauty and the beast (Areej Le Dore).
If I win, I will like 50ml of Killer Vavoom (Azman).
    Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • The only one I tested on this list was the Fig Infusion. I purchased the travel size and worked through it pretty fast, not a lot of lasting power. This list to me leans more masculine (yes, I know people should wear what they love no matter what, but I do prefer more feminine or gourmand leaning fragrances). This list does help me should my husband ever want to have a fragrance – I like not having fragrance competitions when we go out. The Thomas De Monaco selection is the one I will check out for reviews after seeing it’s why Michael was reminded he loves fragrance. I’ve heard a lot about City of Angels, I did test some LV fragrances when I went to Miami, but can’t remember now which ones. I rarely purchase a designer fragrance, but I do like to test when the chance happens. Chocolate pudding in the Raised Spirits! That’s the one I would love to win. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Wonderful list from Michael and Karl. Royal Tobacco, Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Immortel Der Duft Privelege and Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer seem to be favorites this year. I really would like to smell For The Scent of It Folk Tale, since reading your profiles in American Perfumy… and Rogue Perfuemry is a big winner too, so Rostracto and Der Duft Privelige are my choices.
    USA

  • Really savoring each of these magnificent best of 2022 fragrance overviews. Nice to see a mix of naturals there with Voyages Imaginaires and Hima Jomo. Should I win I would like to win Killer Vavoom, or Der Duft Privilege, as Nathalie Feisthauer seems to be on fire this year
    Hello from the EU

  • Their selections are very interesting!! I couldn’t argue anything. Pretty spot on! I smelled most of these and I really enjoyed a handful of them! I’m trying to expand my collection sense I’m new so I don’t have much to compare or contrast from but I do know what I like! From Amouage (sense these were the fragrances chosen. I enjoyed Rose more than the Tobacco slightly. The Tobacco was just not it for me. But I really liked the Rose. Now to Initio! When I smelled this at my local fragrance store I wasn’t expecting much. I own Side effect and love that!! But there’s just something about the Peragon I couldn’t put down!! I would love to own that one for sure! Much love from PA USA

  • it is great to read the reviews on these lists, and recognize several that have been reviewed on Cafleurebon. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried many of them. Killer Vavoom, Beauty and the Beast, Royal Tobacco reviews captured my interest, as I would like to try different variations on the Oud theme. Were I to win this draw, I will choose Killer Vavoom, as I have heard so much about this brand and I love oud perfumes. I am from the USA.

  • Really interesting selections and I love the diversity among the top picks. I see several favorite perfumers in the two lists including Manuel Cross and Nathalie Feisthauer with two a piece! If I were fortunate enough to be selected, I would like either Der Duft Privilege or Navitus Raised Spirits. MD, USA.

  • Karl and Michael-
I was so looking forward to your lists. And they sure did not disappoint!
I agree that 2022 was a significant year for perfumery and was grateful we had so much beauty to choose from.
Thank you both for your eloquent and engrossing reviews and making us aware of lines that many may not have heard of yet.

Looking forward to more in 2023!

  • I wished I traveled more during the year , at least Karl did
-Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian)
Amouage fragrances are loved by most Cafleurebon contributors , the Karl and Michael best only proves that
Frankincense, tobacco , resins , and mild sweetness, Royal Tobacco is upscale nighttime fragrance , with Middle Eastern , but also Cuban flavor.
-Astrophil & Stella Madame M (Nathalie Feisthauer)
The “fusion of carnality” part i find scary
    -Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos):
Succulent cocktail of chocolate, plum and iris
    -Der Duft Privilege (Nathalie Feisthauer):
    Rather unusual fragrance
-Essential Parfums Fig Infusion (Nathalie Lorson) i own
-Initio Parfums Paragon is right up my alley, not overly aggressive, cozy , woody, fruity sweet, with really round up characteristics.
-Jusbox Perfumes Visionary Eye (Dominique Ropion)
From Visionary Eye i expect really good sweet, and aromatic iris, and it’s important that just like my favorite Beat Cafe , is made by one of the best perfumers in the world , Dominique Ropion.
-Matière Premiere French Flower (Aurelien Guichard):
    “Narcotic experience” part scares me
    -Rogue Perfumery Rostracto (Manuel Cross)
Rostracto feels smooth, refined, but also alluring. I like what Karl said “deeply emotional and original”
-Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels (Isabelle Doyen & Camille Goutal):
Often immortelle fragrances do turn not into leather, but into sweet honeyed tobacco , something to be seen.
-Best Limited Edition: Jeroboam Lab Edition
The parent company I know, Psychedelique is beyond gorgeous, still need to try Jeroboam
“I found myself able to move on from things that were weighing me down , push through feer , and refocus on what’s important”
Michael moved into the right direction , and I’m happy for him.
-Roja Parfums Apex (Roja Dove) I own.
-Areej le Dore Beauty and the Beast (Russian Adam ) 80s powerhouse
-Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur (Maurus Bachmann):
Lots of praises for Eau Coeur lately
-For the Scent of It “Folk Tale” (Michael Schrammel): the tail of the unknown.
-Aaron Terrence Hughes Hard Candy (Aaron Terrence Hughes):
I follow the guy on YouTube and Instagram, the fragrance was out of stock on MaxAroma website .
-Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M.La Croix (Manuel Cross):
    Refined throwback fragrance
-Gallagher Fragrances Mists of Time (Daniel Gallagher)
I own Amongst Waves I think the best melon fragrance ,tropical and fruity . Mists of Time is another vacation fragrance from Daniel Gallagher.
-Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits (Julien Rasquinet and Dominique Ropion):
Festive, slightly boozy, tobacco party like fragrance.
-Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian)
You all love Royal Tobacco , I do too , upscale nighttime fragrance , with Middle Eastern , but also Cuban flavor.
    -Best Designer Fragrance:
Luis Vuitton fragrances I’m not familiar with , sweet, vibrant and carefree I like on vacations
AZMAN Killer Vavoom would be great
Thank you Karl Topham, Michael Devine and all the brands

  • Two amazing lists! As usual! I am particularly curious about Azman Killer Vavoon. Plum, chocolate, leather, vanilla! Sounds delicious! A potential signature fragrance. The fact that it links the Orient with the Occident it’s also an extra thing for me. I know how the fragrances from that area are created, that is why I am more curious about Azman and the concept of this house, since it’s aiming to bring a touch of the west in their particular perfumes.
Thank you! I am in Europe

  • Thank you for the work you are doing with these best-of 2022 lists! I can only imagine what a hard job is to pinpoint such a small number of perfumes, when there is plenty to choose from. Fortunately, 2022 was a year that saw the launch of many fragrances, and new houses launched, which is only a good thing, because there is everything for everyone’s taste.
From the amazing list of perfumed prizes, I am most intrigued by Azman Killer Vavoon because of the whole idea behind it of creating a bridge between the East and the West. Thanks very much for this opportunity and good luck to everyone who participated!

  • This ranking contains three stunners I’ve not been able to try yet, so it really works as a stimulus to go try them for the 2023.
Those are Roja Dove Apex, Rogue L’Homme M.La Croix and Initio Paragon. Roja alwas makes incredible perfumes, whit amazing raw material; with a different price point, also Manuel Cross works amazingly well with naturals…really curious.
I would like to enter for Killer Vavoom and L’Homme M.La Croix.
    Claudia, EU

  • I loved how both gentlemen related so personally to the fragrances they selected and described, as truly individual, emotional and intellectual experiences. It was interesting to see Amouage Royal Tobacco in the tops of both and some of the other Cafleurebon contributors’ too, and I totally agree with that. It’s a remarkable perfume and this only comes as a confirmation from all these trained and specialized noses.
It was lovely to read about perfumes that Cafleurebon has written about before, as well as new fragrances, that I can’t remember having read about.
I would love to win Der Duft – Privilege, as a portent of happiness and abstract nature, or Rostracto, as an abstract rose growing from concrete and defying all odds, or Husain Baba – Killer Vavoom. I have seen this name mentioned several times as something groundbreaking and it really intrigues me.
    Writing from the EU.
Happy New Year to Cafleurebon, its staff and its readers!

  • Thanks Karl and Michael! Great lists and as Mr. Devine says, we should buy perfumes that we feel and emotional connection with. As in other colaborators of ÇaFleureBon lists, there is a unanimity on the work of Nathalie Feisthauer, Manuel Cross, Ropion and Zarokian : different perfumes of this amazing perfumers appear on Karl and Michael list: Rostracto and L’Homme M.LaCroix of Mr. Cross, Royal Tobacco that is deep in the heart of Michael as the best perfume release of 2022 (last year Ms. Zarokian was on the top too), Raised Spirits and Visionary Eye of Mr. Ropion. Karl intoduced us to the Jeroboam Gozo Lab Edition of the great Vanina Muracciole: new bottle to celebrate 8 years since Mr. Henin launching the collection Jeroboam : a bright, happy, and full of charm scent with an amazing name Gozo. Designer fragrances also sparkled the interest of Mr. Devine, the work of Jaques Cavalier in Louis Vuitton fragrances (in general, little valued by conoisseurs and extremely preicey) with City of Stars/Angeles. I live in Spain, EU. If I Win I would chose L’Homme M.LaCroix of the one and only Manuel Cross.

  • For the Scent of It “Folk Tale” sounds really intriguing! I would love to try it some day. Before I was thinking that the only perfume without a pyramid is Ingredients from Maison Crivelli, which was a real discovery this year. Talking about other discoveries, Fig Infusion was my most summer scent this year, I’m glad that you have it in your list. Can’t wait to try des immortelles, as it’s one of my most favorite notes in perfumes.

I live in France, EU. And I would like to win Rostracto

  • I am SO excited you included one of my favorites in your list! Folk Tales!! I absolutely love the concept and the blend is an amazing unisex glory so it’s a win/win. I truly want the community to start their tale so we can share what we “see” on the journey. C’mon everyone, join in!!!
I also appreciated the Fig Infusion this year, love Fig as a note and this is another great one!
Manual Cross has been busy thankfully for us. I would definitely treasure a bottle of Rostracto if I won! Thank you for all your great work and give aways.

  • Damn, I’m catching up after a long break and I just realized how much I’ve missed. This is my another “top ten perfumes 2022” article and I’m just so exiting to read every one of them. From this list I gotta say – Beauty and the Beast, Amouage Royal Tobacco and Sacred Scarad are my favourites. Need to get samples and buy just one of theme, beceuse after reading previuos top tens I’m out of money :)) I don’t know how you do it but after reading a shord description of ecery of these fragrances I have this little devil on my shoulder telling me to buy them all… Hate this feeling and kinda love it at the same time. Gotta be honest – I would die for Killer Vavoom so I’d really like to win it. Greeting from Poland, EU. Happy New Yer everyone!

  • It must be a hard job to narrow down so many fragrances to the top 10. Well done, Karl and Michael! There are some gems that had been succeeding to impress many Cafleurebon editors and contributors and landed on my list to try in 2023 (French Flower by Matiere Premiere, Thomas De Monaco Eau Couer…).
I love Michael’s attitude towards adding only bottles that truly spoke to him. It is my goal for 2023 to thoroughly sample all the fragrances before dedicating myself to the full bottle.
So, based on Karl’s and Michael’s reviews of their top ten, my sample list is the following:
Amouage Royal Tobacco – heavily overlapping one, based on the reviews such a deep and multi-faceted masterpiece
Der Duft Privilege – I love that the perfume reminds Karl of happiness
Essential Parfums Fig Infusion –As Karl I love the concept of the house, the perfume has been on my try list since the first review on Cafleurebon
Rogue Perfumery Rostracto – I admire rose-centered perfumes and have been impressed by the house
Thomas De Monaco Eau Couer – Michael sold it to me. 

If I am lucky, I would be happy to get my hands on Rogue Perfumery Rostracto or Der Duft Privilege.
Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge about the fragrances!
    Greetings from Slovenia (EU)

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

The breakdowns of these fragrances and personal anecdotes included by Karl and Michael here were a pleasure to read. With so many to consider, I understand how difficult it must’ve been to narrow down to these selections. One of particular interest to me is Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits. Rum-soaked, caramelised sugar mixed with warm chocolate pudding? A highly intriguing concoction indeed! Appreciate the giveaway opportunity! Many blessings from Va, USA!

  • Thanks for the reviews Karl and Michael!

I’m happy to see Fig Infusion listed as the first. When the articles appeared I was hoping to see this appear on one of the editors recommendations. I am a huge fan of Fig and also highly recommend everyone to give this a try for a fresh and original summer fragrance!

I wasn’t aware Jeroboam released limited editions! I love their bottles and they have some incredible fragrances. I have not tried Gozo yet, so I will have a look for this. Thanks!

I’m not particularly fond of Louis Vuilton fragrances. Out of their collection I only liked Imagination and Ombre Nomade, but I find the price a little too high for this brand. I haven’t tried City of Angels yet, but I’ll try it and see if it will change my opinion!

If I were lucky enough to win I would choose AZMAN Killer Vavoom!

    Greetings from the UK.

    Thanks for the nice lists!

I would love to win either Killer Vavoom, or L’Homme LAcroix

  • A fascinating list! I would love to try every single perfume on this list, but actually I’m just about touching the surface of the perfume aficionado world (with a beginners budget too!).
I do find it really interesting to see the rapidly growing appreciation/influence of Middle Eastern styles of perfumery, particularly with the likes of Areej Le Dore and Amouage featuring heavy doses of oud in a rather bold fashion. As someone who loves rich resins and dark woods, (I enjoy burning frankincense and ouds of various origins) I’m always gravitating towards those types of fragrances. Though I don’t immediately go for sweeter fragrances, Killer Vavoom sounds like something I’d like to try, as chocolate is a weakness of mine. I’m based in the UK 🙂

  • So many more scents to try! The only one I’ve tested so far is Sacred Scarab, which is so unique and lovely it is definitely worthy of being on this list. I’ve also really been wanting to smell Royal Tobacco and Killer Vavoom as they both seem like warm and cozy (and maybe a little sexy?) winter fragrances. If I’m lucky enough to win the giveaway I’d pick Killer Vavoom. I’m in MN, USA. Thanks for the opportunity and happy new year!

  • I havent tried Gozo or Citybof Angels. Amouage Royal Tobacco, Rostracto and Sacred Scareb are the only.one I have tried so far. Navitus has been a a few lists and the brand is new to me with many top perfumers so I need to investigate. For the give away Killer Vavoom sounds fun!. I live in the US

  • These fragrances are fantastic! Happy New Year to you and your family. The fragrance I’m most interested in is Raised Spirits. I would be a true blessing were I to win. I reside in South Carolina

  • Karl & Michael!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Excellent lists!! What wonderfully representative fragrances of 2022! Manny Cross, Der Duft, Sultan Pasha, Russian Adam, Amouage, etc. are Amazing!!! ❤️ I’d be so lucky to win any of these bottles, especially Der Duft (the only one I have not experienced)! USA
    ❤️

  • Karl not only went to Esxence, but also all over Europe, I’ll start planning for Esxence 2023 early on

    ☆Amouage Royal Tobacco (Cecile Zarokian):
Royal Tobacco is like making Licorice Cake, with Macerated Plums and Walnuts, and later on sharing it with friends, while all smoking some top of the line Cuban cigarettes. It is grown-up decadent tobacco fragrance, but it’s not not mature.
    ☆ Astrophil & Stella Madame M(Nathalie Feisthauer):
I like fruity, resinous and spicy fragrances.
    ☆Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos):
AZMAN Majnoon I think smells like Zwetschgendatschi , the famous German Plum Cake, with a big cup of 100% Arabica made espresso. I so need to get my hands on the whole range of fragrances.
Killer Vavoom actually kind of reminds me of the cake I’m eating at the moment, Chocolate Ganache Cake, with Macerated Plums
☆ Der Duft Privilege (Nathalie Feisthauer):
Melange of fruits, woods and the sea
☆ Essential Parfums Fig Infusion (Nathalie Lorson):
Eating Fig Almond Tea Cake , and drinking Ceylon Black Tea is how Fig Infusion
    ☆ Initio Parfums Paragon:
Karl take on Paragon made me think of making, and later on eating Japanese Ume Cake , drinking bergamot juice, while sitting on a wooden bench somewhere in Japanese countryside, with some lavender scent also detectable in the air.
☆Jusbox Perfumes Visionary Eye (Dominique Ropion):
Karl Topham take on Visionary Eye made me think of making Fluffy and Moist Cinnamon Bundt Cake , and later on eating it , while in Berlin’s Tiergarten Park , enjoying the scent of iris there .
☆ Matière Premiere French Flower (Aurelien Guichard):
Not so indolic tuberose, ginger and pear
☆ Rogue Perfumery Rostracto (Manuel Cross):
Upscale resinous rose , Rostracto is a fragrance for special occasions.
☆ Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels (Isabelle Doyen & Camille Goutal):

☆ Roja Parfums Apex (Roja Dove):
    Classy and modern
☆ Areej le Dore Beauty and the Beast (Russian Adam):
French cocoa , and rose i like
☆ Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur (Maurus Bachmann):
I was expecting to be good, but such heart stopping reviews could only existe me even more
☆ For the Scent of It “Folk Tale” (Michael Schrammel):
    I can chose my adventure
☆ Aaron Terence Hughes Hard Candy (Aaron Terence Hughes):
Golden ticket to Wonka-esque world? Wow .
    ☆Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M.La Croix (Manuel Cross):
I’m happy for the fellow Chef ‍, and his success.
Rostracto and Derviche II I really like,
L’Homme M.La Croix is too mature for me
☆ Gallagher Fragrances Mists of Time (Daniel Gallagher):
Michael Devine take on Mists of Time made me think of Orange Mousse , with candied peel macerated in dark rum, vanilla Chantilly, cassis coulis, almond crumble and garnish it with two scoops of orange Gelato
Eating the Orange Mousse, while sitting on a beach right next to the coastal line is how I’d imagine Mists of Time
☆Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits (Julien Rasquinet and Dominque Ropion):
Raised Spirits smells like Christmas, and also making Kahlua Rum and Chocolate Poke Cake , with caramel glazing.I love such joyful gourmands.
☆ Zoologist Sacred Scarab (Sultan Pasha):
    Resinous, fruity and boozy
    ☆ Best Designer Fragrance:
Quality fresh fragrance from Louis Vuitton
I’ll be more than happy to win AZMAN Killer Vavoom
Appreciate Karl Topham, and Michael Devine fine work, and the giveaway campaign

  • Hello I would like to try this Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits its notes are incredible a wonderful perfume. A beautiful and original bottle. I have heard that it is woody and with rum. I like perfumes like that. I would like to try it. I’m from USA New Jersey

  • I found this article to be an excellent review. Both contributors are amazing. Amouage Royal Tobacco was amazing with excellent gourmandish spicy tobacco the pushes the envelope. Killer vavoom as another Azman frag also sounds interesting with chocolate/iris/chypre/oud. Essential parfums fig infusion with the unique fig note/initio Paragon with sage/plum/greenery/Jusbox visionary eye for the iris/French Flower for the tuberose/Rogue rostracto forbthe rose/voyages l’eau des immortels for the naturals..

The second list is also amazing with Roja Apex for the beautiful chypre/Areej le Dore beauty and the beast for the luxurious oud and rose water/eau coeur and folk take for the complexity of notes and blending/ATH hard candy for tge sweetness/Rogue l’homme la croix for the old school oakmoss masculine notes.

USA. Would love to try killer Vavoom. Thank you for your time and giveaways

  • How I want to test Royal Tobacco – sounds amazing! I am intrigued by this description!
Would like to win Der Duft Privilege or
    Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits.

  • I gotta love this Top Ten Best Perfumes section. I think that this year was amazing for perfumery and that it delivered great gems like the ones that are listed here by Karl and Michael.
I love both lists because they are very diverses and they each add something special.
I can outsand Killer Vavoom, Royal Tobacco, Hard Candy. They are all gems that I had the pleasure to try this year and got instantly in love.
I would lovae to wain Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits but any fragrance from the giveaway would be great.
    USA here.
    I would liake to win

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Very eclectic mix of choices, like the facets of a diamond – all polished, all quality, all refined. When perfume savvy people, like Karl & Michael, use terms like ‘instant obssesion’, ‘fantastic’, ‘most avant garde’ and give quotes such as “Once in a rare while, I discover a perfume that reminds me why I love perfume. It’s a discovery that’s reassuring in the acknowledgement that fragrance can be heart-meltingly beautiful; it’s also eternally baffling as I ponder the intrinsic magnificence of the invisible.”, I can only say that it would be a privilege to win Privilege 🙂 [since I’m living in Europe].

  • What a beautiful choices !!
Every perfume sounds amazing and must-try ! Especially Amouage Royal Tobacco !
The combination of blackcurrant, rhubarb, sea notes, cedar and guaiac wood in Der Duft Privilege sounds beautiful!
Would like to win Der Duft Privilege!

  • Thank you for two great lists! I particularly liked Michael’s, which included lots of artisan perfumers and some unusual selections.

I’m starting to see some repeats in these best of lists, including Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV, Azman Killer Vavoom, Matière Premiere French Flower, Zoologist Sacred Scarab, Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels, Thomas De Monaco Eau Couer, and Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M.La Croix. However, Both Karl and Michael included a few nominations that weren’t on many of the earlier lists, including some indie perfumes like Aaron Terrence Hughes Hard Candy and For the Scent of It “Folk Tale”. I’ve been really impressed with Michael Schrammel’s other perfumes, so I’ll seek that last one out soon. I’m also really interested in trying Visionary Eye and Sacred Scarab.

The only two here I’ve tried personally are Rostracto (smoky rose, seen through a haze) and Mists of Time (mineral, blackcurrant, and orange). The latter will be a go-to in the spring and summer; I love the sweet/aromatic balance and vaporous quality of it.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I’d love to win 30 ml of Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M.LaCroix. Thanks!

  • Fantastic reviews! This list actually contains one of my favorite perfumes of 2022, Sacred Scarab. Too bad a bottle of it was not offered in the draw!
Of the perfumes mentioned, i am most curious about Killer Vavoom, only because i have never sampled a Miguel Matos fragrance. If i win the draw, i would pick this bottle. I’m in the USA.

  • Great list – I only wish I was familiar with more of the fragrances! 2022 really seems to have been a boom year for creativity in fragrance. As I am most interested in natural perfumery, I’m excited to see perfumes like L’Homme M. Lacroix and L’Eau des Immortels show up on multiple lists! Personally, I wasn’t too taken with Beauty and the Beast but after seeing it on the list here I might revisit with a more open mind. I tend to stick to niche and naturals so I have not tried Michael’s best designer perfume nor Karl’s limited edition choice (though the musk and patchouli base sounds wonderful). If selected for this giveaway, I would love to try Rostracto. Best wishes from the US!

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Karl and Michael’s selections for Top 10 Perfumes of 2022. Amouage Royal Tobacco, Initio Parfums Paragon, Roja Parfums Apex, and Gallagher Fragrances Mists of Time are absolutely stunning and should be on everyones top 10. Two fragrances I’ve been dying to try are Voyage Imaginaries L’eau de Immortels, Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits which sounds like the perfect gourmand and Aaron Terence Hughes Hard Candy which sounds sweet and succulent. The best designer perfume Louis Vuitton City of Angels sounds like something I would enjoy, but I haven’t tried it. The limited edition Jeroboam Lab Edition of Gozo has an absolutely stunning presentation and it’s a beautiful fragrance. I am from the USA. If I win I would choose Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits.

  • Thank you, Karl and Michael for another great olfactive experience. The list is so unexpected and full of surprises. Amouage, Zoologist, Rogue Perfumery and many more are now in my memory and on my to-try list. City of Angels from Louis Vuitton is an unexpected name for me, but a nice surprise.
I would love to win Rogue Perfumery Rostracto.
    Hugs from Romania

  • My last Esxence experience was in 2019 , I had plain tickets , booked nice AirBnb apartment , but something came up ,and unfortunately I had to skip the exhibition.

As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances I know, and compare my thoughts with what the Cafleurebon crew thinks.

Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian):
Loved by many Cafleurebon reviewers , including Karl and Michael.
Absolutely gorgeous fragrance, but also a changeling, smells different on different people. On me it’s thick dark scent, with more peru balsam than tobacco, incense, licorice and hefty dose of plum. The plum in Royal Tobacco reminds me of the plum in Plum Japonais by Tom Ford, my all time favorite fragrance
Some Cafleurebon reviewers do get liquorice, some don’t, some get black pepper, some don’t.

    Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos):
Both Killer Vavoom and Majnoon are great, chocolate , plum and iris, or coffee, leather and incense, you can’t go wrong with either.
Both I believe are better suited for more experienced noses.

    Der Duft Privilege (Nathalie Feisthauer):
A few years back Der Duft was Instagram reviewer / influencer . I was interacting with him frequently back then, until all of a sudden he decided to start his own brand. I’m happy for his success.

Essential Parfums Fig Infusion (Nathalie Lorson):
Fig Infusion , catchy name no doubt about it. I really like fig fragrances. Nathalie Lorson implement the black tea into the mix , without making it overbearing and shadowing other notes , especially the fig . I like when the fig is prominent in my fig-based fragrances, and not just hiding somewhere in the background.

    Initio Parfums Paragon:
Fresh-fruity , woody and musky fragrance.
I only wonder why Steven never mentioned lavender , even as supporting note , I get lavender from the opening, the heart , base….

Jusbox Perfumes Visionary Eye (Dominique Ropion):

“Possibly the most avant-garde perfume I selected for this list….”

    Wait…what?!?
Royal Tobacco Opus XIV, Killer Vavoom, Paragon, L’Eau des Immortels, Gozo and even Rostracto I would call avant-garde , but Visionary Eye is easy to wear fragrance in my opinion

Matière Premiere French Flower (Aurelien Guichard):
    Such a heady floral

    Rogue Perfumery Rostracto (Manuel Cross):
Vintage inspired, but not necessarily a throwback , old-school scents , Derviche and Derviche II , and Rostracto to me smell quite modern, and up to date.

If I have to rate my favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrances:
    1. Derviche
    2. Derviche II/Rostracto
    3. Tabac Vert

Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels (Isabelle Doyen & Camille Goutal):
    Must try

Best Limited Edition: Jeroboam Lab Edition
Gozo is definitely rich and addictive .

For some could be something insignificant, but being a punctual person, I’d like to say there are 4 typos in the names of the brands , fragrances or perfumers Michael announced as his best for the past year

    The name of the fragrance
Thomas De Monaco Eau Couer (Maurus Bachmann):

It’s should be “Eau Coeur” and not “Eau Couer”

    The name of the perfumer
Aaron Terrence Hughes Hard Candy (Aaron Terrence Hughes):

It should be Aaron Terence Hughes , and not Aaron Terrence Hughes

    The name of the perfumer
Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits (Julien Rasquinet and Dominque Ropion)

It should be Dominique Ropion , and not Dominque Ropion

    The name of the perfumer
    Amouage Royal Tobacco (Cecil Zarokian):

It should be Cecile Zarokian , and not Cecil Zarokian

    Roja Parfums Apex (Roja Dove):
The EDP and Parfum versions are not quite the same , modernized vintage composition

Areej le Dore Beauty and the Beast (Russian Adam):
I have love-hate relationship with Areej Le Dore, some I love , some I hate with passion . I like Russian Oud , and if I have a chance, I’ll try Beauty and the Beast

Eau Coeur by Thomas de Monaco
A lot of love for Eau Coeur

For the Scent of It “Folk Tale” (Michael Schrammel):
    Kind of abstract idea

    Aaron Terence Hughes Hard Candy
Aaron Terence Hughes is slowly, but surely rising up the latter of my favorite people in perfumery. Hard Candy I own .I wear fragrances for my own pleasure only, but Hard Candy is a true compliment magnet

Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M.La Croix (Manuel Cross):
Derviche , Derviche II , and Rostracto to me smell quite modern, and up to date , but L’Homme M.La Croix is too much of a old-school scent for me.

Gallagher Fragrances Mists of Time (Daniel Gallagher):
Mists of Time to me is slightly different, compared to what Michael is getting. In The opening the orange is not sweet , but tart and acerbic , like I’m biting, and chewing just removed orange peel. The cassis is ever slightly sweet , and pleasantly musky . In the base the sweetness is more pronounced, with cypress, patchouli and cherry pipe tobacco. The blend is top notch , the tobacco slightly reminds me of the tobacco in Naxos by Xerjoff.

Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits (Julien Rasquinet and Dominique Ropion):
I’m a strict teetotaller, but I love boozy fragrances, especially now . I can’t go wrong with festive sweet , and boozy fragrance composed by Julien Rasquinet and Dominique Ropion

    Best Designer Fragrance:
From the so called Privé high end lines by the designer brands , I do believe Dior had the best releases. Still I’m curious about what kind of fragrance impressed Michael to call it the best designer of 2022.

I’d like to win AZMAN Killer Vavoom
    All 3 profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Thank you to the CafleureBon team for such a wonderful year. Every review is thoughtfully written and illuminates the experience behind the page. I enjoy the idea that perfume can be a folk tale, as it permeates unseen through the air. To each nose, subtle differences in the olfactory story can be picked up, with the masterful perfumer at the helm, weaving the story. I would like to try Killer Vavoom. Based in the UK

  • I’m not so familiar with most of the fragrances in Karl’s list but I’ve tried Rostracto which I would also consider to be one of my top 10 fragrances of 2022. I’m way more familiar with Michael’s top fragrances having tried multiple of them. I haven’t heard of Jeroboam Lab Edition before nor City of Angels from LV, however they both seem to be good fragrances from the descriptions.

I would like to enter the the giveaway for Rogue LaCroix which is the only fragrance from Rogue I haven’t tried.

    I am from Sweden

  • I am not familiar with any of mentioned fragrances with en exception of Sacred Crab. I am super interested in a scent with name „Privilege”. And for me, osonic (ocean) note is a smart choice as water is our unvaluable good. As well as whole nature. So I guess we are all privileged. Another interesting perfume is new creation of Aree Le Dore. He is a master of Oud indeed. I had once a bottle of Malik Al Taif: Rose and oud combo as well. I wonder how how does this fragrance compare to Russian Adam’s previous one?

I am from Poland and I would like to win: Privilege afer Duft, Killer Vavoom or Rostracto

  • I’m living vicariously through these lists, because I pared back and spent most of the year “shopping” my collection and revisiting older fragrances. Over the next year I’d like to explore more… thank you Karl and Michael for jump-starting that wishlist by describing such a variety of perfumes. I am especially drawn to warm indulgences during this season, so I would be over the moon about winning Raised Spirits! I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve read a lot of Karl’s reviews this year and I’ve some of Michael’s reviews too, and it’s interesting for me to see how they talk about this year in regards to fragrance releases. I did not get to try any of the fragrances they mentioned so it was helpful for me to read their take on them. I’d like to win a bottle of “Killer Vavoom”. I live in the U.S.A.

Best 2022 Perfumer for me .Matiere Premiere perfumes are really good, Oud Seven and Encens Suave , i just don’t like tuberose
    9.Rogue Perfumery Rostracto (Manuel Cross):
I’d really love to smell Rogue Perfumery fragrances, but unfortunately there is not even one point of sale not just in Paris, but in France
10.Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels (Isabelle Doyen & Camille Goutal):
Voyages Imaginaires are available at NoseParis. Other than L’Eau des Immortels Azahar and L’échappée Sauvage are also nice

  • I am in the USs and would like to win Killer Vavoom. I see it mentioned in a few lists.
I am so behind the 2022 releases, it is great to have a good summary – looking forward to exploring the list

  • I love love this list!!!! I’m getting into fragrances and sometimes I feel I know nothing about perfumes… reading this review I found myself trying not to get too excited!!!! I want to try them all!!!! I’m sure I would fall in love with Amouage Royal Tobacco Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits, Initio Paragon!!!! They have my favorite notes! I’m from Massachusetts, US and I would love to win Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits…

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful article Karl and Michael ! I love Karl’s choice of Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV one of my favorite discoveries this year for sure. I agree that it’s a very rich and multifaceted interpretation of tobacco. I also am intrigued by Karl’s choice for Best Limited Edition – Jeroboam is a brand that has been on my radar for a while but I have not yet tried.

Similarly, I am always interested in new Areej le Dore releases and Michael’s choice of Beauty and the Beast really appeals to me. I really like his description of it as standing out in a very crowded field of Oud and Rose with it’s generous dose 30% real oud. Learning that makes it even more appealing to me. I am a little more skeptical of his choice for Best Designer perfume but I have never been a big fan of Louis Vuitton fragrances.

I live in the US. I would be thrilled to win any of these but my choices would be in the following order of preference 1) Killer Vavoom 2) Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits 3) Rostracto.

  • have to summarize again the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind fragrance information

Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian):

    Favorite Amouage for Michelyn?!?
Amouage fragrances are just different. Even if you like all the notes , In my opinion you should never blind buy , without trying the fragrance you’re interested on skin. Some do smell very different on different people, when sprayed on skin .
I’m not questioning Michelyn of course, but I’d like to spray Royal Tobacco on skin . I wonder if I’ll smell the best tobacco , with resins and upscale spicy sweetness…or something different?

    Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos):
    Pure seduction in a bottle

    Initio Parfums Paragon:
I own Oud for Greatness , considered by many the best one in Initio Parfums catalog , and I’m sure I’ll also enjoy Paragon . The first is formal occasions only fragrance , the way i wear it at least, but the Paragon relative is more versatile, and easy to wear , from day time family gatherings , playful nights, to going out with friends , or weddings .

Jusbox Perfumes Visionary Eye (Dominique Ropion):
I don’t know much about David Bowie to be honest, but I know Jubox , quite a funky and interesting brand with different size bottles, design. I like all the unique things they do bring to the table. Of course not every fragrance is appealing to me , but Green Bubble, Night Flow , Beat Cafe , Golden Serenade, Siren & Sailors are all really good.
In Visionary Eye I like the sophisticated look on iris, the subtle cinnamon sweetness, and the musky cuddling touch.
Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau Des Immortels (Isabelle Doyen & Camille Goutal):
Natural Perfumery was not appreciated by most ,is because of the bad performance most of the time. Now houses like Voyages Imaginaires not only smell great , but they found a way to make naturals more potent .

Best Limited Edition: Jeroboam Lab Edition
The spicy floral amber with hints of orange candy sweetness .

Eau Coeur by Thomas de Monaco

partially relaxing , partially provocative and seductive fragrance if I have to guess.

Gallagher Fragrances Mists of Time (Daniel Gallagher):
i do like chocolate fragrances, I when I read The Best American Indie Perfume giveaway article , I had to order a sample of Wicked Good. Quite alluring, modern take on chocolate fragrance , smells like very expensive hand made Belgian chocolate, so realistic. Strictly cold weather through , but once the leaves are starting to fall, I’ll buy a bottle.
I rarely drink in a hot weather, but I’m all into creamsicles, mineral freshness with heavy dose of blackcurrant . Mist of Time is happy moments only fragrance.

Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits (Julien Rasquinet and Dominique Ropion):
Aubade (Lyrik) is collaboration between Julien Rasquinet and Dominique Ropion is the best Navitus fragrance I’ve smelled . I’m glad to know Raised Spirits is again made by the two. perfumers , with a different profile of course.
Delicately sweet, festive , cozy , and even playful, anyone could wear Raised Spirits , and enjoy the scent especially during Christmas time.

    Best Designer Fragrance:
    Dior 2022 releases > Chanel 2022 > Louis Vuitton 2022

If lucky I’d like to win AZMAN Killer Vavoom
Thanks for the draw, and Happy New Year
