Tom Ford Ébène Fumé Review (Rodrigo Flores-Roux) 2021+ Reflection Meets Renewal Draw

As we turn the metaphoric (or actual) calendar page from December to January, there comes a moment when reflection meets renewal, when we take a step forward while glancing behind. Around the world, those in every culture seize this moment to begin anew. In South America, born of an ancient Incan tradition, the Palo Santo tree (translated as “holy wood”) is burned as a gesture of positive transformation, its smoke thought to dispel negative energy and kindle a spiritual revival.

Forged in Palo Santo smoke and fire comes a new creation from the house of Tom Ford which creatively advances a genre while respecting its history and strength of character. Tom Ford Ébène Fumé, “ebony smoke,” is a triumphant return to the glory days of the brand’s pillar Private Blend launches. Ébène Fumé was composed by the great Rodrigo Flores-Roux, the master perfumer behind some of Tom Ford’s classics such as Jasmin Rouge, Sahara Noir and the mega-hit Neroli Portofino.

Tom Ford Ébène Fumé emblematizes the signature earthy-opulence for which the line is most revered, while remaining wholly unique and artistically evolved. Further enhancing the spiritual aura, a golden-hued incense rises throughout, curling in and out of ebony wood and smoldering resins. The incense ignites a memory of Gucci Pour Homme, a discontinued masterpiece which many have heralded as Golden-Era Tom Ford, who was, at the time, the creative director of Gucci before bringing his talents and vision to his own fragrance line. Despite its name, I find Ébène Fumé to be more wood than smoke, a buttery wood at that, beautifully balanced amid additional notes of crackling black pepper, violet leaf, a touch of leather, labdanum, papyrus, cade oil and rose. I also detect an unmentioned osmanthus accord further softening every edge.

Tom Ford Ébène Fumé has renewed this weary spirit. As someone who once stood in line at Bergdorf Goodman’s to have Tom Ford autograph a bottle of Amber Absolute, I’m thrilled with this new launch which has taken a prominent place on my shelf amid Moss Breches, Plum Japonais, and Bois Marocain.

I own my own bottle, and the opinions are my own

  • Haven’t smelled this and I kinda gave up on Tom Ford with their crazy perfume names but this article really renews my interest in the brand. Also like Rodrigo Flores Roux for Arquiste
Thank you for a wonderful review and chance

I was impressed when I smelled this one. It seems to be a return to more classic Tom Ford and I’m so happy they didn’t do the cheeky play on words for the name. It did remind me of things like Sahara Noir and Amber Absolute. Thanks for the lovely review Michael. I don’t need to be in the draw.

  • Hi Michael! Thank you for this great review! I’m always open to experience anything by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, the genius behind Arquiste Sydney Rock Pool and ELLA! The most recent Tom Ford scent I’ve enjoyed is Ombré Leather (there are so many to discover, such as Ambre Absolute, Moss Breches, Plum Japonais, and Bois Marocain, etc. etc.). I’m curious about the papyrus note. Thank you for the wonderful review & your donated decant (wow!) – one of us will be so lucky! USA ❤️

Thank you for the great review Michael.

I do enjoy Plum Japonais a lot and based on your choices, I believe that I would enjoy this fragrance a lot.

I love that this scent is Forged in Palo smoke – what a line to open the review. It makes me think of incense and resins immediately. I love that the notes also include cade oil, rose and osmanthus. These are all hard materials to work with and balance correctly.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I heard of this scent and knew immediately that I would want to try it. I believe it is made of everything I love. I would like to try those scents combined by a master perfumer.

  • Tom Ford knows how to do woody, earthy fragrances. My favorite TF’s I’ve sampled include Oud Wood and Costa Azzura. I do like Neroli Portofina a lot so I’m very interested in trying Rodrigo Flores-Roux creation, The Osmanthus accord is fascinating. I would love to experience it. Thanks for the review, Michael! MD, USA.

  • I love a good smoky scent and am just starting to get into palo santo. I don’t haven’t tried a ton from the TF Private line but I do like to wear Soleil Blanc in the summer. I am from New England

  • Thank you Michael Devine for the chance to try this new tom ford fragrance! I have heard alot about it and would love to try it. My favorite tom ford private blend is Amber absolute.

What a nice review Michael! I was really interested to hear that is more woody than smoky, and balanced with leather, labdanum, and incense. I also like that the burnt wood is reminiscent of an ancient Incan tradition, a nod towards transformation and revival in the new year. I have not tried as many Tom Ford Private Blends as I would like to, but so far my favorite is Jasmin Rouge, a gorgeous opulent jasmine. I live in the US.

Very good review. This fragrance sounds fantastic, and I hope to get my nose on it soon.

My favorite “Private Blend” is Tobacco Vanille. That frag is mmm-mmm-good.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I love woody, incense fragrances, and also find Tom Ford fragrances to be very elegant and well balanced. Thanks Michael for a clear description of Tom Ford Ebene Fume. I have tried Tom Ford Tobacco Oud and Oud Wood, but I am not sure if they are from his line of Private Blend fragrances. I find both to be exquisite and beautiful. Thanks again for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I would really love to try Tom Ford Ebene Fume, I don’t have any favorites from Tom Ford Private blend, because I haven’t yet tried anything. I would love the opportunity to try this. I am in the US

  • I am still new to being a fragrance enthusiast/collector, so I still haven’t tried anything yet from the Tom Ford Private Blend series. I would like to try this new release from Tom Ford, and I thank Michael for his generosity. Michael’s review of this fragrance made it seem like I should at least try this fragrance. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Michael Prince says:

Legendary perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux that has created so many beautiful fragrances appears to have created another. A beautiful smokey and burning wood along with buttery wood, pepper, spices, and resinous touches what’s not to love. My favorite Tom Ford Private Blend fragrance is Tobacco Oud. I am from the USA.
