The Best (and Worst Fragrances) of 2019 + Part 1 Draw

Editor in Chief Michelyn Camen of CaFleurebon and Ermano Picco Best and worst fragrances of 2019

For as long as ÇaFleureBon has been giving end of year Best Fragrance awards (2010)(2011), (2012), (2013)(2014), (2015), (2016)  (2017), (2018) there was always the question, “was this a good year for perfume”? Can we even judge Best Fragrances? What one editor loves another might not like…but instead of judging we look at the Best Fragrances of 2019 Annual wrap up as truly personal choices of fragrances that moved us, were well constructed and transported us. As we head into a new decade, Ermano Picco and I give you an overview of the year that was, (which for me was more about the people than the perfume). Over the next few days, you will read the top ten Best Fragrances of 2019 from Ermano and me, Sr. Editors Ida Meister, Despina Veneti, Gail Gross, Lauryn Beer, as well as Sr, Contributors Elena Cvjetlovic, and dana sandu.

Best fragrances of 2019

Best Trends: Neo gourmands and specifically coffee. Even if its grown-up addictive flavor is not new in perfumery (let’s remember the avant-garde Jean Laporte’s Maître Parfumeur et Gantier Santal Noble from 1988), this year we counted about 30 launches featuring coffee as a key ingredient, from fragrant cheap thrills from Yves Rocher,  the latest Chanel Les Exclusifs Coromandel parfum (Olivier Polge), to the niche Rubini Tambour Sacré (Cristiano Canali) or the site-specific Odeur du Théâtre du Châtelet by Caroline Dumur for Comme des Garçons in collaboration with Théâtre du Châtelet. –Ermano Picco

And the return of rose perfumes (not that they ever go out of style) but modern takes were everywhere!!!! While there are still creative directors who don’t disclose the perfumers who compose their fragrances, there is more transparency then in years past. This shouldn’t be a trend… it should become a best practice. Also Master perfumers who step away for a moment from the comfort of just creating for big companies’ briefs to start their own brands such as Olivier Cresp’s Akro and Aurelien Guichard’s Matiere Premier ParfumsMichelyn Camen

Time to move on:

The fruity in-peachment. Fruity notes can be a distinctive and winning character in fragrance if cleverly made. Frankly I am pretty exhausted of smelling the same generic pear-peach-red berries dull fruit salad in both gourmand soft orientals and soft florals. If you want to play this feature, either on the juicy, crunchy or pulpy side, please go for it with uniqueness! –Ermano

Let’s put a stop to the negativity and divisiveness between bloggers, video fragrance reviewers and Instagram posters. There’s room for everyone, as long as there is respect for the art of perfumery and  for each other. –Michelyn

Alberto Morillas

Alberto Morillas 2019 (credits Getty Images Europe)

Hardest Working Person(s) in Perfume:

Firmenich perfumer Alberto Morillas was surely one of the hardest working veterans in the perfume industry. Just try to google his name and you will find the creations he signed this year are about 30 between designer (Gucci, Bulgari, Chopard, Ferragamo) and niche (L’Artisan Parfumeur). He’s also quite active on social media sharing his everyday life as well as public events. I sometimes wonder if he ever sleeps. –Ermano

Best artisan perfumers of 2019

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Sultan Pasha and Sarah McCartney

I might as well give this award to Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes and Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays every year, but for different reasons in 2019. Where Dawn was incredibly prolific (over 20, you will see her perfumes on many a best fragrances of 2019 list over the next few days), Sarah shifted gears and composed less but began running artisan perfume classes and sharing skills, because she “believes secrecy is leading to misunderstanding and panic”. She also launched online workshops for $1 a month on Patreon.

Special recognition goes to Sultan Pasha of Sultan Pasha Attars, who I can assure you doesn’t sleep and spends over 90 hours a week on his gorgeous perfumes, which have a uniqueness to them that is almost mystical.Michelyn

Best perfumer Jean Claude Ellena

Jean Claude Ellena via WWD

Perfumer of 2019: Jean Claude Ellena does it again. His comeback for Frédéric Malle is the result of a three years joint research with Floral Concept on raw materials and formulation. It definitely marks a new evolution of his style and his ability to evolve after a 40 year career. In addition we loved his Perris Monte Carlo Jasmine de Pays, Rose de Mai and Baliflora for Laboratorio OlfactivvoMichelyn and Ermano

Honorable mention to Olivia Giacobetti for Best Perfumer of 2019 for IUNX Talc and NARS Audacious. – Michelyn

Etienne De Swardt of Etat Libre D'Orange

Etienne de Swardt of Etat Libre D’Orange via Etienne

Best Creative Director of 2019

Etat Libre d’Orange’s Etienne de Swardt who along with perfumer Daniela Andrier brought us the first Artificial Intelligence co-created perfume She was an anomaly. –Ermano

etat libre d'orange 500 perfume review

Photo Twisted Lily

From the genius mind of the Rimbaud of Perfumery, Etienne de Swardt were four perfumes in 2019, all as his style inhabit the realm of film, art, literature and his own intergalactic planet. Ermano mentioned She was an Anomaly;  add the rose majesty of Experimentum Crucis, the cinnamon spicy rose of The Spice Must Flow and the soon to be reviewed 500. Bravo.-Michelyn

best niche perfumes Alessandro Brun and Riccardo Tedeschi of Masque Milano

Alessandro Brun and Riccardo Tedeschi of Masque Milano via Masque Milano

Best Niche House:

Masque Milano had a great year, releasing very different perfumes like Love Kills and Kintsugi yet keeping high standards of quality and cohesiveness. Moreover in the last months they previewed a new line entirely dedicated to women:  Le Donne di Masque with two amazing creations that surely won’t pass unobserved next spring. Thus they win a Best Fragrances of 2019 award from both of us-Ermano and Michelyn

NISHANE at Esxence 2019

Murat Kutran and Mert Guzel of Nishane Esxence 2019

Nishane had a particularly brilliant year, with the magnificent Ani by Cecile Zarokian, Nefs, UNUTAMAN, Muskane, Florane, and Safron Colognise.Michelyn

Best Artisan Fragrances 2019

Francesca Bianchi  and Antonio Alessandria

Best Indie house:

Francesca Bianchi Perfumes:  What a stellar year for Francesca Bianchi. Francesca created five fragrances, all memorable: Etruscan Water, Lost in Heaven, Sex and the Sea Neroli, creamy and carnal and The Black Knight. Each an example of her particular deft handling of raw materials, and taming them so they are wearable olfactive art as well as innovative compositions. My  favorite was Lost in Heaven, which is one of the first “animalic” fragrances that really spoke to me in years, with its honeyed florals, soft spices and gourmand overtones.  Her exclusive for The Perfume Lounge to celebrate 10 years, Cuir Soyeux feels like suede and silk on bare skin –Michelyn

Antonio Alessandria Parfums. Looking back at Antonio Alessandria’s path, it’s evident he has a strong artistic vision and how it pushes him to always improve technically and too always develop original takes on the inspirations deeply rooted in Sicily. Combining severe high-mass incense with gourmand notes that wouldn’t smell trivial or vulgar was quite a challenge. With Dies Aurorae he managed to deliver at the same time a sophisticated neo-gourmand and an original incense, a comforting and uplifting fragrance able to convey both spirituality and innocence.-Ermano

Best fragrances of 2019

Best Natural Perfume house:

Hiram Green, an amazing year once more for Hiram Green. He does for rose in Lustre what he did for leather in the award winning Hyde. Voyage 2019 was another natural beauty. – Michelyn and Ermano

Best Natural perfume: Providence Perfume Co. by Charna Ethier Drunk on The Moon is a new take on tuberose with a boozy sherry accord that left me giddy. It’s one of the best perfumes of the year, in any media-natural or otherwise. –Michelyn

best Perfume of The year 2019 Frederic Malle rose & Cuir

Best Fragrance of 2019:

Editions de parfums Frédéric Malle Rose & Cuir –Ermano

Michelyn…. This is the first year I didn’t name one but I have a top ten best fragrance of 2019 list tomorrow

Worst Fragrances of 2019

Worst fragrance of 2019 (or most disappointing  …)

I really had great expectations on the new Hermès Jardin sur la lagune. Of course Les Jardins is probably the most “Ellenistic” line among the Hermès perfumes, an aerial inspiration that came straight from Ellena’s impressionistic poetry from the early 2000,  conflicting with the compactness of the typical Nagel style. Add that it is likely that the marketing people at rue Faubourg 24 aim to change the Hermès signature to attract a new clientele. The result is a pleasantly annoying floral that shouts its emptiness with a dash too much dry woods.-Ermano

 Nars Audacious perfume review

Best Bottle:  We really loved the debut of NARS in perfumery. NARS Audacious’ bottle is modern, chic, and above all its mix of thick glass, graphic lines with the nail lacquer motif leaking from the opaque black box definitely exudes the DNA of the brand. The scent created by Olivia Giacobetti with notes of incense and frangipani is a stunner as well.-Michelyn and Ermano

Worst Fragrances of 2019

Photo Twisted Lily

Best Packaging presentation- A new category… I was blown away by the simplexity and attention to detail in the presentation of Floraiku, the collection devoted to the culture of Japan and art of incense. Each perfume is elegantly packaged in a bento box and the stoppers are wrapped in woodblock inspired motifs-Michelyn

 via Accademia del Profumo

Best Limited Edition:

The fragrance Accademia del Profumo celebrating Leonardo da Vinci after 500 years from his death. After the success of the exhibition Leonardo Genio e Bellezza (Leonardo Genius and Beauty) curated Maria Pirulli that displayed in Milan, Venice, Bologna and New York, Accademia del Profumo launched a contest among the International players of the Perfumery and Design Industry to create a perfume dedicated to the Italian Genius who also created perfumes and cosmetics for the Milanese Court of Ludovico il Moro. The outcome is an amazing spiced woody fragrance inspired by oak (a tree Leonardo admired) created by award winning Symrise perfumer Emilie Coppermann around a majestic cypress note and a special pepper extraction. The fragrance bottle is a unique contemporary artwork by designer Franz Degano of Quinto Lancio Studio. The perfume that’s not commercially available has no name but bears under the disc cap the rebus “Ponti in core” (keep it in your heart) taken from the Forster I Code. –Ermano

American Perfumer Bloodline review review

Hans Hendley Bloodline for American Perfumer: The most beautiful cedar centric perfume of any year. Alongside his father’s cedarwood oil, Hans used a tincture he made with pieces of white pine fatwood, an artisan distilled pinyon pine needle oil, and a five-year-aged vanilla bean tincture. Only 15 bottles were made; I hope David Kern brings it back – Michelyn

Esxence 2019 best event

Photo: Ermano

Best Fragrance Event: Esxence Official Party at the beautiful Neoclassic Palazzina Appiani was indeed a major event in one of the most beautiful and unusual places downtown in Milan. It was amazing to enjoy the most festive people in perfumeland on the huge stairs facing the Arena – Ermano and Michelyn.

worse perfume bottle 2019

Worst bottle:  I have rarely seen a designer fragrance with a worse flacon than Dolce & Gabbana K. A standard tall bottle with  generic graphics topped by a pretentious golden crown with blue cabochons.- Ermano

Best bang for the buck:

Zara and Jo Loves best inexpensive fragrance review

Zara Emotions – the collaboration between Zara and Jo Loves gave us pretty nice bangs for the buck (40ml at € 15.95 each). Favorites are the sparkling Vetiver Pamplemousse and the heady Tuberose Noir.-Ermano and Michelyn

Rising star:

Euan McCall of Jorum Laboratories

Euan McCall of Jorum Laboratories courtesy of Euan

I thank the perfume gods and The Silver Fox for bringing to my attention the talented Euan McCall of Edinburgh-based Jorum Laboratories. He is a perfumer you will be reading much more about and have read about on these pages. He’s the nose behind the brand Senyoko Paris and has his own brand Jorum Studio. Two of my top ten fragrances this year were authored by him so stay tuned.-Michelyn

Mackenzie Reilly Perfumer rising star

via the Fragrance Foundation

My rising star perfumer is Mackenzie Reilly. She’s not only talented, she loves connecting with nature and giving her own twist to classic accords, especially with unexpected mineral brilliance. After some years under the mentorship of Master Perfumer Carlos Benaïm, she released her first creation A lab on fire California Snow in 2017. This year in particular she worked hard on various US lines such as Maison d’Etto (Macanudo, a crisp green woody narcissus), Polo player Nacho Figueras line (Palm Beach) and part of the Yellowstone collection by Caswell-Massey, an amazing project partnering IFF botanists who studied endangered species in the park with the living-flower technology. I  believe she will bring a new touch to American perfumery in the coming years.-Ermano

Michael Edwards Perfume Legends II best book perfume book of 2019

Best Fragrance Book of 2019

Perfume Legends II, the revised work by Michael Edwards updated to 2010 includes new Modern Masterpieces as Serge Lutens Feminité du bois and Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. To summarize this book in a sentence or two doesn’t do it justice, so we urge you to read Sr. Editor’s  Despina Veneti’s thorough book review here. –Michelyn and Ermano

Ermano notes that a Italian Biologist and Neuro-scientist at Max Planck Institute in Frankfurt Anna d’Errico  wrote “Il senso perfetto” (the perfect sense), an interesting book of scientific dissemination about how the sense of smell works, as an honorable mention.

Best Fragrance of 2019 Collaboration:

Accolades to Nishane Ani especially for the collaboration between Turkish creative directors Murat Katran and Franco-Armenian perfumer Cécile Zarokian. Ani takes inspiration from an ancient city at the borders of Turkey and Armenia. This long lost place, an ideal bridge of peace and knowledge between two populations embodied in this collaboration gives hope for the future. –Ermano

I have to recuse myself from my real picks for best collaboration- ÇaFleureBon‘s Red Queen by Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays and Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfumes Circe, as I was the creative director of both. Antonio Gardoni I LOVE YY with ScentbarNYC, is a voluptuous ylang ylang that demonstrates why Antonio Gardoni is one of the best indie perfumers on the planet, gets my vote and a warm welcome to New York. –Michelyn

Gucci Memoire d’un odeur best ad of 2019

Best Ad:

Gucci Memoire d’un odeur featuring Glen Luchford’s images perfectly portrays the scent and bridges the ‘70s nostalgia and values found in Alessandro Michele creations for the brand.-Ermano and Michelyn

Worst ad of 2019 Johnny Depp Sauvage

Worst Ad:

It’s Dior Sauvage Parfum advertising campaign once more featuring Johnny Depp. “We are the land” directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, and it couldn’t be worse as we are still scratching  our heads.  What’s the message ?  We’re offended as was most everyone so the ad was pulled after being  publicly criticized for cultural appropriation. –Michelyn and Ermano

Armani Privé Orangerie Vénise review

Best Designer Fragrance:

It’s a tie with Gucci Fading Autumn acqua di profumo by Alberto Morillas and Armani Privé Orangerie Vénise by Dominique Ropion. Both are in the exclusive offerings from the designers, but indeed they are worth a try. The first is a decadent mossy load of patchouli with plummy hints that make it playful and bohemian-chic. The latter is a spicy orange blossom topped by the minty sparkle of buchu leaves and backed by a glamorous trail of mossy Cedarwood-Ermano

It might be polarizing but Gucci Memoire d’un odeur with its retro-70s aromatic green-ness and startling chamomile accord has niche appeal. It’s a risk for the commercial market and might change perceptions of what a designer fragrance can be. –Michelyn

Best Celebrity Fragrance of 2019 Ignacio Figueras by Carlos Benaim

Best Celebrity fragrance:  Famed Polo Player Nacho Figueras had teamed up with IFF perfumers including Carlos Benaim on a new line of pricey, but worth it fragrances. that are currently only sold at Bergdorf Goodman. Mr. Figueros is an ambassador to Sentebale, which is a charity co-founded by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex to help raise funds for children and young people affected by HIV. My favorite was Windsor, homage to the Prince and has an absolutely stunning English Honeysuckle accord. All the proceeds go the charity.  Let me recap: beautiful fragrances,  much loved celebrity, proceeds to charity, gorgeous bottle.Michelyn

Baruti Perverso review

credit Baruti

Best perfume you want to drink or eat:

Baruti Perverso with its mix of booze, salty roasted hazelnuts, cocoa and caramel fudge indeed delivers its notes in a mouthwatering tobaccoish trail.-Ermano

best gourmand perfume 2019

Robert Greco for Perris

Perris Monte Carlo Arancia di Sicilia: Blood orange. The most iconic citrus from Sicily is  known as the Orange Sanguinella; bright red and  grown on the slopes of Mount Aetna. I find the warmth of the amber and the contrast of coffee against the citrus suits my skin regardless of the season. –Michelyn

Best fragrances of 2019

Best flanker:

Chanel Gabrielle Essence. Though less daring and unique than the original perfume, this Gabrielle flanker bears a more elegant sillage with creamy-woody floralcy redolent of some amazing tuberose bouquets  that have been stars of the niche market  for several years.  –Ermano

Sex and The Sea Neroli from Francesca Bianchi. I love it even more than the original. –Michelyn

Best Fragrance Name:

Etat Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow. Being a Dune and David Lynch junkie, since I read about the perfume, I couldn’t help but thinking of an ad featuring Reverend Mother Mohiam and her sisters.-Ermano

Ma Nishtana:  Translated from the Hebrew “Why is tonight different” from the Passover seder’s Four Questions.  I was wondering what happened to Prin Lomros the very talented Thai perfumer who was an art and olfaction award finalist? He started a new collection under the brand Parfums Prissana.

Robert Herrmann of Cafleurebon dies on October 1, 2019

RIP Senior Editor Robert Hermann

MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person):

Senior Editor Robert Hermann who left us this year, October 1, 2019. From Michelyn’s written tribute:”Robert Herrmann brought light and love to his local community, to his family,  to his many many friends,  and to the fragrance world. We will miss his thoughtful and insightful perfume reviews, his sense of humor and for me, personally, his friendship and love.Michelyn and Ermano

I mourn a special friend in fragrance,  Gaia Fischler who passed away late November. Gaia wrote one of the first (and best) perfume and makeup blogs called The Non-Blonde. –Michelyn

Best Buzz:

The storied House of Caron has a new in-house perfumer: Jean Jacques. Formerly working at Takasago, Monsieur Jacques is well known for his amazing creations for Isabey, like the iconic Gardenia or the charming Ambre de Carthage, or again for off-beat commercial scents like Courrège Hyperbole. Bridging Ernest Daltroff heritage is not an easy task for sure, so I wish Jean Jacques the best-Ermano

Have you heard? The cult niche brand Commodity which went abruptly out of business in April 2019, leaving perfumistas all over the world in tears has a second act. It was purchased by US niche perfume Distributor Europerfumes on October 31, 2019. That’s no trick, just a wonderful treat for those of us who love the brand- Michelyn

Hall of shame (…less than impressed…)

I am less than impressed with brands sprung from nowhere with no concept trying to get attention relying on influencers. It’s no surprise six months later you see 40% off sales on their online shop. Please be credible and come up with an idea. Or pay for it and rely on professionals, because likes don’t necessarily turn into competence or even sales. –Ermano

Patricia de Nicolaï of Parfums de Nicolai 30 years in niche perfumery

Hall of Fame 2019

The Première Dame of Perfumeland Madame Patricia Nicolaï who celebrated this year the 30th anniversary of the brand she founded with her husband. Many accolades and rivers of fragrant beauty have passed and definitely she’s been a role model for young women in perfumery. Moreover what a better way to celebrate than launching a daring, innovative fragrance as Baïkal Leather Intense, a must smell of this 2019 indeed and now for the new decade the upcoming Angelys PearErmano and Michelyn

hristopher Chong former Creative Director of Amouage 2019 Photo by Jay Brooks©

Honorable mention: Amouage former creative Christopher Chong  who led the brand for 12 years bridging the Amouage heritage with amazing creations like Jubilation and debuting successful projects as the Library collection and the candles. His beautiful goodbye to the Omani brand is a stunning green floral, Love Mimosa featuring a youthful crisp fruitiness that makes the best fragrance in the Secret Garden collection.-Michelyn and Ermano

Best Fragrance you never heard of:

Redamance Queen Nzinga

Photo © Leah Meltzer

Redamance Queen Nzinga: Created by Brooklyn perfumer Marissa Zappas and her mentor Olivier Gillotin, this luminous vintage inspired amber is translucent and for me brings to mind the transparency and depth of Olivia Giacobetti. It also gets my honorable mention for best bottle, as the custom flacon by Jonas Bowman is breathtaking.-Michelyn.

les indemodables cuir de chine review

I  had never heard of Les Indemodables collection which smells gorgeously French with a certain je ne sais quoi. Their Cuir de Chine smote me with its osmanthus loaded rendition of the 1919 Tabac Blond fierceness. The whole line is part of L’Aterier français des matières, a brand founded by Rémi Pulverais to pursue an almost made to measure excellence, from the quest for uncommon raw materials to the final product as a remedy to the flattening of perfumery. –Ermano

BUT there’s more….

Thanks to Marissa Zappas we have a draw for a 15ml bottle of Redamance Queen Nzinga for a 15 ml bottle USA registered readers only. (You must do this here)

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Euan McCall of Jorum Studio we are offering a complete sample set of the Progressive Botany Vol.1 collection (6 x 1ml), for one registered reader in the EU, USA or Canada

Francesca Bianchi is offering a discovery kit of her 9 fragrances  (does not include Cuir Soyeux) for one registered reader in the EU, USA or Canada

Great list with valuable suggestions. I don’t drink coffee, but I’m enjoying it in fragrances this year. I like fruit in frags in the warm weather as well.
Nishane Ani is my favorite release this year and in my Top 5 of all time.
    Pennsylvania USA

  • Wow- what a lineup and a great read!
Happy to see so many familiar perfumes and perfume lines in your fascinating list. We are looking forward to reading the coming reviews…

  • I always look forward to reading this “Best, and Worse, of” article on CaFleureBon. I’m looking forward to sniffing Armani Privé Orangerie Vénise and Perris Monte Carlo Arancia di Sisilia. I enjoyed learning about the perfumers behind the fragrances. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Any of your gracious offerings would be welcomed. USA

  • Very informative list. I appreciate that you noted categories like best perfume book, best packaging and rising perfume star. I’ve tried some of the Zara Emotions collection and agree they’re a pretty good bang for the buck. I’m in the US

  • I have tried many of the fragrances listed, but two of my very favorite creations of 2019 are Perris Montecarlo’s Arancia di Sicilia and Rose de Mai. I am very curious about Baruti’s Perverso and A. Alessandria’s Dies Aurorae, which I haven’t had the opportunity to try yet. I’d be very happy to win the 15-ml bottle of Redamance Queen Nzinga. I am in the USA.

  • I loved reading about all the different creators, their influences and their creations. The writers and editors are so knowledgeable. I have not tried any of the scents mentioned,. I would like to enter the drawings for US readers. Thank you.

  • Oooh I love reading these articles on best or worst in the different categories. Sultan Pasha doesn’t sleep! Ha! But he does create some of the most original and remarkable perfume attars ever! He changed the way I approached perfume….also loved Hiram Green another original creator and game changer…..didn’t get to try a lot of the others mentioned but there’s just SO many! That’s why articles like this are essential. Would love to try Francesca Bianchi….and Nars for that bottle oh and the worst bottle……D &G K……is truly ghastly!

  • I just got into fragrances beyond the Macy’s cologne alley stock. All of these are new to me. Some scents sound so interesting, especially Citrus, tobacco and fresher scents. I’m not the biggest fan of apple gourmands…

  • What a marvelous list to contemplate and savor. I haven’t tried any of the ones mentioned. Sometimes, there is a lag from these marvelous beauties to being able to find samples to purchase. I look forward to trying some of these in the near future, especially Spice Must Flow,Audacious, and Queen Nzinga, and a bunch of others you have written about. Thanks for a great article and a most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Thanks for the fun review. I love how you have a category for best natural perfume (which I have not tried yet), as well as one for best limited edition. The worst ad and worst bottle are also entertaining…no debate from me on your picks there! I have only tried a handful of what you listed, including my favorite Drunk on The Moon. Regards from Boston USA.

  • To me the worst frag was dior sauvage, between the cringe ads and popularity by the masses was enough
To let me know noting is unique or captivating about. Floraiku is a house
I’m really excited about, there bottles are one of the best bottles and art work I have ever seen, forbidden incense kodo is what i want to try. As always lovely review to end the year with. USA

  • I look forward to the ÇaFleureBon Best and Worst list all year long! I will be reading and re-reading the posts, catching up on fragrances I missed, nodding vehemently when the fragrances I love make it to someone’s “best” list (I’m betting Lauryn agrees with me on at least two or three things!).

Thank you for being unafraid to name the worst as well. That Sauvage ad was so wrong on so many counts!

Ermano’s admiring mention of the unnamed Accademia del Profumo tribute to Leonardo has me yearning for a chance to put my nose on it someday. How we ache for the things we cannot have!

I can’t wait for Michelyn’s top ten list, and Lauryn’s too.

I would love to be entered into the draw for the Jorum Studio Progressive Botany collection sample set. I adore the concept and the presentation, and the descriptions of the fragrances are just entrancing.

I am in Chicago, IL, USA.

  • I have tried Experimentum Crucis by ELDO, Ani by Nishane (a gurmand that smells of lemon cake, but not sickenly sweet as many gurmanda fell into this trap), I even own Kintsugi by Masque Milano, a magnolia-centered fragrance, which stands on its own, it is not similar nu anything I own or smell.

Gucci Memoir d’une Odeur is a camomile based fragrance, unlike most designer fragrances that were launched this year. I think Gucci had the courage to dare to do something different and take the risk. In the end, the customer has to be (and can be) educated as well, instead of just adjusting to what he wants.

  • There are so many perfumes I want to try on your best list! Some like the Francesca Bianchi have been on my radar for a while, but some of the others I have not heard of so I am glad you included some less well known fragrances to try. One day I will get my hands on Red Queen and I love YY. I have not tried any so I can have no favourites. One day I’d love to go to an event like Esxence, that sounds like such a paradise.
I would love to be considered for the Francesca Bianchi and the Euan McCall draws. I am a registered reader in Saskatchewan Canada.

  • I am afraid I have not tried any perfumes on your list but I am intrigued by Francesca Bianchi,s Sex and the sea Neroli. Thanks a million from United Kingdom

  • I have not had the pleasure of trying any of these perfumes but I am fascinatied by Hans Hendley a house I need to explore. Thanks a lot from UK

  • Being an adventurous old nose in fragworld, I promised myself – reading the bests and worsts from the ÇaFleureBon’s summa summarum – buying one of the worst frags with every two of the best perfumes. At the moment Baruti house is my favorite, Baruti Chai is my winter love. Oh, the best bottle NARS Audacious’ , what a beauty, can’t wait to have it. And Floraiku, it’s a must. Attila, Budapest, Hungary

  • So many good juices in there! Thanks for educating us, Cafleurebon.
I particularly enjoyed Rose et Cuir and I would love to have the chance of testing Francesca Bianchi’s perfumes.

    I live in the Netherlands.

    Happy New Year!
    Diana

  • I’ve hardly tried any of them which is shameful but I must remedy that. I haven’t even tried Red Queen and I love Sarah McCartney’s stuff.

  • Coconu Monica says:

What a great read, very informative too. I haven’t tried any of the perfumes mentioned but I almost bought an Ani decant recently.
I’ve already made sure I get to test a bit of Spice Must Flow next year. I will probably also order a Nicolai perfume bottle soon.

Thank you for this heartwarming article.
    I live in EU

  • I have only had the chance to try the Jo loves line and I really loved Tubereuse noir and Fleur de patchouli. The others I didn’t find too remarkable. And I’m one of those who find Memoire d’une odeur a challenging perfume to wear. It’s interesting as an experience, but I find it a bit too personal and also strange.
I would love to try each and every perfume mentioned in this article, but Sultan Pasha’s ones triggered my interest the most.
Thanks for the draw! From the EU.

  • I tried and was disappointed by Hermes – Un jardin apres la lagune. I found it quite synthetic and a weird combination of loud and subdued. Basically, it’s not loud, but kinda screechy, if it makes sense. I wished it would have been more original and blended better, as the whole Jardin line is. I would love to try the Francesca Bianchi kit, there are so many people praising her creations. I’m from the EU.

  • That’s a nice list, I only beg to differ on Dolce & Gabana K. I might be biased since I rather like the smell thus don’t take issue with the bottle but I didn’t think it should be the worst – how about those slanting bottles that have to sit on the side? My favorite would be Francesca Bianchi’s discovery kit. Thank you for the overview and the giveaway. I’m in USA

  • Grest selection! I agree the most of them, my favorites of the year are Nishane Ani, F.Bianchi Etruscan Water and an extra nomination for Marc Antoine Barrois Ganymede. Best discovery Jorum laboratories.
    I am in Italy.
    Thanks!

  • Please do not enter me in the draw (I have all of Francesca’s fragrances!! So happy to see she was chosen!!) And yaaay Sarah!! And Sultan!! But since you mentioned coffee I had to recommend one of my favorite fragrances of the year De Toma à Zouma by Motif Olfactif!! Please, please try it, cardamom & coffee and totally original!! It’s SO GOOD!! Created by fragrance reviewer and super nice guy Oswald Pare. The stuff is amazing!! Good luck to everyone!

  • As always your list brought up scents I had missed and now MUST try. For better or worse, I love Etat Libre D’Orange and all that they do, even the ones that don’t work, I love. And I love Jorum Studio as well, your pic of Euan McCall as an up-and-comer was spot on.
I would love to see some more catty “worst of” fragrances, lol. But that is just mean. And ever since reading previously on Cafleurebon, I have been dying to try REdamance Queen Nzainga.
    Your list is always great.

It’s wonderful to read about all the amazing fragrances and people behind them. I have yet to try any of the fragrances discussed in the article, but will definitely try sampling a number of them this coming year. I’m especially curious about trying Floräiku. Thank you for the drawing opportunity. I live in the USA.

  • I’m glad you mentioned 4160 Tuesdays, Sarah’s perfumes are my best discovery this year. From the rest of the list, i only tried Gucci’s Memoire d’une odeur, which i quite enjoy, and Jo Loves (not all of them. From the ones i tried, i like Vetiver Pamplemousse and Waterlily tea dress).
Thanks a lot for the list ! I hear a lot about Masque Milano and Francesca Bianchi, will try to find a way to sample some!
    I’m from Romania, EU.

  • Great article and list. There is so much in there I could comment on. Being positive, Francesca Bianchi is an unbelievable talented perfumer. Euan McCall of Jorum studios, I would love to try soon. Thank you for the amazing list and Happy New year and best smells. USA

  • Sunny Chaudhary says:

What a marvelous list to contemplate and savor. I haven’t tried any of the ones mentioned. Sometimes, there is a lag from these marvelous beauties to being able to find samples to purchase. I look forward to trying some of these in the near future, especially Spice Must Flow,Audacious, and Queen Nzinga, Naraiku, Prive Orangia and a bunch of others you have written about. Thanks for a great article and a most generous draw.

I could NOT agree with you more about Sauvage. My personal introduction to the house of Nishane was B-612 (which I absolutely adore) and I’m just itching to try Ani because I have heard so many wonderful things about that and Havicat. However, I am most curious about Nzinga by Redamance. I have read a lot about HRH Nzinga, and her campaigns against the Portuguese (in particular) in her country. I have so many questions: Why Amber? What about the scent evokes Nzinga? (Thank goodness for hyperlinks, eh?)

  • I really enjoyed reading this. There were fragrances I read about earlier in the year and some I hadn’t. I thought u did a wonderful job! I look forward to Michelyn’s list of 10 best fragrances. I havent tried Ermano’s best or worst. I really do want to try both of the best niche brands especially Nishane. In the U.S. Thanks for the draw.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I haven’t tried a lot of these, but I always love reading end of the year roundups! I use them to come up with a strategic sampling plan for the following year. I’ve tried (and liked) the Gucci Memoire, the PdN scents mentioned, and some of the Nishanes. I am excited to sample Francesca Bianchi and Cuir de Chine. Osmanthus leather sounds exquisite! Thanks for this draw! I would be thrilled to try the Jorum studio or Bianchi sample sets. I’m in the US.

  • Wow, I learned so much from your Best of…! I know some of the fragrances, but the most I still have to try! Thank you! Out of the mentioned ones, I am intrigued by Francesca Bianchi perfumes. In 2019, I discovered the house of Nishane and I can’t wait to try ANI! I also like the recently released Bee (Zoologist). Let us have a wonderful perfumed 2020!
    I live in Romania, EU.

  • I am not so knowledgeable about perfume to comment on best and worst of the year but I thoroughly enjoyed reading the winners and why. I have a lot of fragrances I have to smell now!
I appreciate that people are doing daring things with fragrance as the standard designer fragrances of the past several years bored me. Hope I can win a bottle or the sampler to try!

  • Forgot to mention I live in CT, USA as well as Berlin, Germany.

  • Unfortunately I have not had a chance to try any of those new release that mentioned on the list. But I disagree that Dior Sauvage Parfum advertising with Johnny Depp would be the worst ad. Actually that was one of the best in my opinion.

  • Stefan Cretu says:

haven’t tried any but I love Hans Hendley’s work and I bet that is one hell of a perfume. I’d like to win the Discovery set from Francesca or the complete sample set from Euan, heard only the best of thing about both houses. Cheers! Stef, EU

So many great suggestions in this article! It’s been a while since I tried coffee in my perfume – looks like I need to get out to sniff more. And soon (my coffee maker broke this week, so I’m in need of coffee in any form!). Jorum Studios and Gucci Memoire d’un odeur are two that stood out to me from the article. I was very saddened that we lost two very important voices in the perfume community this year. They will truly be missed.

Thank you for this great article!

  • Love Francesca Bianchi! I’m not sure if I should mention that I would love to try her sample set, thank you! Mich USA

  • For me the worst fragrance is memoir se un odeur loved Floraiku concept fragrances and packaging and would love to try everything else mentioned here Bronx NY

  • For me the worst fragrance is memoir se un odeur loved Floraiku concept fragrances and packaging and would love to try everything else mentioned here Bronx NY this is not going through

  • Wow, what a great list. Many on here that I haven’t tried. Been wanting to try Nishane Ani and their other fragrances. Also Francesca Bianchi a Etat Libre. Thanks for the giveaway, I’d go with Francesca Bianchi Discovery Set.
    California

  • I did not test a lot of new fragrances, but i liked Nomade and bought a decant of Memoire dUne Odeur, which would be great, if the longevity was better. I tested Rose et Cuir and thought it was a good scent too.
I would love the Bianchi tester set. I live in Germany

  • I love the list. It is always refreshing to read the worst of the year. I have tried some fragrances, others not. My favorite I’ve tried is Rose & Cuir.

  • I’ve tried Etat Libre d’Orange’s 500 years and Spice Must Flow. I was captured by the names but eventually they became my scents of the winter festivals. I have also blind bought Franchesca’s Bianchi Cuir Soyeux and the Black Knight. It was my discovery of the year.

I loved the list. Congratulations Ms. Nicolai! I have tried the new Gucci and am not a fan. I would love to try any fragrances of the giveaway. I am in Toronto Canada.

  • Excellent choices all around! As I scrolled down to the “Hardest Working in Perfume” section, I wondered if Sultan Pasha would be listed. I shared with my husband and chuckled, as he was so kind to order a sampler of his attars as my Christmas present, and it has yet to arrive! Good things come to those who wait, haha.
How did I miss the news about Commodity? I’ve never tried any of their offerings, but have heard a lot about their quality. Glad to hear they’re giving it another shot.
I’d be happy to win any of the offerings.
    USA

  • I always look forward to these articles summing up the year, thanks again! I would like to win the Jorum Studio sample set or the Francesca Bianchi discovery kit. EU.

  • Michelyn,
Thank you so much for naming my Drunk On The Moon fragrance Best Natural Perfume! I’m beyond thrilled and so appreciative of your continued support for Providence Perfume Co.

  • So many perfumes, so little time 🙂 I think I’ve smelled only ELDO – Spice must flow (which is a great name, I too think so 🙂 ) Count me in for the draw! I`m in Romania, EU

  • Great suggestions, I hope I will be able to smell them all one day. The most interesting ones for me are Spice must flow, Bloodline (what a great bottle!) and Baruti Perverso (the name and the description are both promising).
Would love to try my luck for the Francesca Bianchi or Jorum studio samplers from the EU.

  • Beautiful roundup that has my mouth watering! I agree about that ridiculous Eau Sauvage/Johnny Depp campaign: File under “W” for “what were they thinking?” I haven’t sampled a one, but would love to experience especially some of the new coffee-rich scents of 2019. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! Happy New Year, Michelyn and Ermano!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

There are so many on this list that I have on my “to smell” list! But I think of all of them I really am dying to try Perverso and Spice Must Flow (tbh, it’s the Dune reference that really hooked me). I have a lot of work to do in 2020! Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • I have not tried anything mentioned in this story, although Baruti Perverso, Nishane Ani, and Francesca Bianchi’s work have gotten high appraisals from many people. As for coffee fragrances, I’m surprised Akro Awake wasn’t mentioned when speaking of Olivier Cresp’s new venture. It is said to have an extremely authentic, fresh-brewed coffee note. The new sci-fi inspired fragrances by Etat Libre d’Orange are also quite impressive, especially regarding the bottle design. Being a Dune fan and awaiting the totally new version directed by Denis Villeneuve, Spice Must Flow sounds wonderful. Thanks for the giveaways and great annual review!

  • I love all of the list offerings. Sc mall is subjective so, until it passes my nose, its fair play. I haven’t tried any of these fragrances, but as to what I would want to try, just going by the reviews I have heard, anything by Francesca Bianchi is a must try. Then there’s Etat de Libre D’Orange Spice Must Flow, Baikal Leather Intense, Frederic Malle Rose and Cuir, Perris Monte Carlo Arancia di Sicilia, etc. Any USA giveaways I would want to be entered into.

  • I love Sultan Pasha’s creations, however a little-known but outstanding natural perfumer is Teone Reinthal of TRNP (Teone Reinthal Natural Perfumes). Her creations are absolutely brilliant, in particular Eau Naturel, Pagan, and Sylvana. Just ordered several more of her new creations. There hasn’t been a single one that disappointed me. She is a former aromatherapist and her intuitive mastery of ingredients from that field enhances her creations and takes them to another level.

  • I love all the different thoughts on a wide array of smells ANI is one of my favorites this year TN USA

  • Great article! Unfortunately I haven’t yet had the chance to smell any of the fragrances on the list. Francesca Bianchi and Spice Must Flow have caught my eye. Happy New Year from Bucharest, Romania (EU).

  • I adore reading these year-end posts, I also know how much time and effort are put into them. Thanks, team CaFleureBon for all your hard work and especially for these year-end wrap-ups.
I have had the pleasure of sniffing some of those mentioned here and enjoyed each take on them.
I’m going for the Redamance Queen Nzinga and I’m also eager to get my hands on the Jorum Studio perfumes.
Wishing you all a healthy and happy end of the decade.
    I am in the USA.

  • That was a long but informative and entertaining.
I have not tried any of these. I don’t have favorites, I am new to the world of fine/boutique fragrances and enjoying every post. It’s quite heady to take in and how wonderful to be the ones to write reviews and record your thoughts.

  • Blanche Russell says:

I feel that Neil Chapman’s book “Perfume: in Search of Your Signature Scent” deserves an honorable mention in the Best Fragrance Book category. It is well-written, thoughtful, informative, at times very amusing, and absolutely gorgeous to look at with its cover–an Art Deco perfume flacon in gold and silver on black leather background–and pages edged in gold. It is a book any perfume enthusiast would enjoy.

  • I havn’t tried most of these, sadly. I had to laugh at the ‘worst’ categories. Some of those were truly disappointing. The one I want to try the most is Arancia di Sicilia, which I will include in my next order. I would love to win the Francesca Bianchi discovery kit. I’m from Canada.

  • m.r.everything says:

What an incredible read…. I read this the other day when you first posted it, and had to reread it several times! I REALLY enjoyed this article and agree with most of the choices here! I have tried quite a few on this list and there are still quite a few that I need to get my nose on! I definitely agree on the hardest working person(s) in fragrance…. Sarah is, without a doubt, my favorite perfumer and creates stunning fragrances! I have subscribed to her Scenthusiasm classes on Patreon and I highly suggest it to anyone interested in perfumes, not just making them! It is quite interesting, info packed, and very fun! I can’t wait to see if there is going to be another collab with CaFleureBon and 4160 Tuesdays again this year. White Queen and Red Queen are both phenomenal fragrances and another one would be just as great!

I have yet to try any of Dawn’s masterpieces but that is going to change this coming year! i will be getting my hands on some of hers and I definitely can not wait! This year, I do plan on getting my hands on quite few more fragrances that I have yet to smell. There are so many fragrances I want to try and so many brands I really need to get my nose on!

Sultan Pasha…. what can be said?!? I have only sampled one or two of his stunning pieces of work, from a friend, but I would definitely love to get my hands on some more of his! I hear nothing but rave reviews and love for him and his scents! I follow him on FaceBook, and let me tell you… if you need a daily (ok, hourly) laugh, definitely give him a follow! he has me cracking up all the time! He is such a great person!

Thank you, Michelyn and Ermano, for putting this article together! Again, this was a fascinating read and I will probably re read it quite a few more times! I loved it! I hope everyone has a great new year and good luck to all! I live in Delaware, US.

  • As far as best trends go, bring on the Neo gourmands, especially the coffee! Although it was Baruti’s Perverso, with the nutty foodie overload that I loved the most. Nishane’s Ani is a very close second though!

  • Honestly, I haven’t tried many releases of 2019, but the one I really enjoy is Royal Elixir by Ormonde Jayne, because it is not just Ambre Royal in a higher concentration, but a more well-balanced version.
    Best wishes from Germany

  • a fun long read—i had to reread to add to my list— i agree about the best bottle. no favs yet, but i’m currently wearing I Love YY thanks you

  • I’m in the US and I’m combing over your lists for my next sample purchase! And I couldn’t agree more with your comments about the hardest working person(s) in perfume including DSH and Sarah McCartney!! They are so prolific but always doing something new and original, never resting on their laurels or flanking themselves to death. I admire them greatly!

  • A very big part of the mentionned fragrances are new to me. I absolutely have to try them 🙂 very nice review. Thank you! I am from EU

  • I feel terrible as so many people loved it but HATED Memoire d’un Odeur as I can’t stand the scent of chamomile (so dusty sweet) but 100% agree with the praise for Euan McCall of Jorum Studio and would love to try the new ELdO fragrances of this year, as I love how forward thinking they are – I don’t love everything they make on my skin, but I love everything they are willing to try!

  • I have tried none of the fragrances listed above, but really do excited when I read the review of those over the Internet. Fragrances world is a rabbit hole indeed.
I would like to have a chance at the Francesca Bianchi discovery kit.

  • Michael Prince says:

Great best and worst fragrances list of 2019. I haven’t tried any, but the reviews I have heard on them fall in line with this list. I am a fan of coffee and gourmand fragrances so I am glad they are trending and more popular right now. Baruti Perverso sounds so good. Robert Hermann RIP. I am from the USA.

  • Many thank you’s to Michelyn and Ermano for this roundup of best and worst for the year. I’m intrigued by the Zara / Jo Loves collab and hope to find tester bottles in the US.

I love the scent of pear, and many Nicolai fragrances work well for me, so I am excited about Angelys Pear.

As always it is a blessing and a curse that there are so many new fragrance offerings each year. It’s wonderful to have CaFleureBon’s help finding my way. And it’s especially lovely to read about the important people who make perfume happen, they are the beating heart of this art form I cherish.

  • BEAUTIFUL ARTICLE, IT’S NICE TO FOLLOW YOUR PRECIOUS SUGGESTIONS, I PERSONALLY LOVE THE GOURMAND PERFUMES AND ALSO THE COFFEE NOTE IS AMONG MY FAVORITES. THEN WITH THE HELP OF CAFLEUREBON I ALWAYS DISCOVER NEW PERFUMES. I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM FRANCESCA BIANCHI YET, SO I WOULD LIKE THE SET. THANK YOU LINDA (UE)

  • I love all kind of summaries. Regarding this one.. I see how much left it is for me to discover. I agree on Lustre by Hiram Green. I really appreciate F.Bianchi (my favorite scent is Angel’s Dust) and Masque Milano (Love Kills and Kitsungi are very unique)
I would like to win a sample set from Jorum Studio.
    I live in Poland.

  • Thank you for the list. It is always very helpful because there are so many beautiful perfumes every year. I’m happy to see ELDO and Antonio Alessandria. These are ones of my favourite brands, so good to know it was good year for them. I am very interested in Francesca Bianchi creations. Have heard so many good opinions but haven’t had the oportunity to try them yet. I would love to win the sample set. I live in the EU.

  • Wow! What a great compilation of scents. I’ve always loved Cafleurebon articles on best and worst. I haven’t tried any on your list but I look forward to doing so. Thanks for the draw. – CA, USA

  • I’m surprised at myself that I haven’t smelled most of the fragrances on this list. The one I did test out was Gucci Memoire d’un odeur. It wore close to the skin on me but it was so pretty and clean. One of those fragrances that are great to have in your collection to wear on days you just want something that is light and in the background.
    I live in the USA.

  • Since this has been a rough year for me physically and financially I have not been able to try many of the fragrances mentioned. However I do love the new Hermès Jardin sur la lagune. Every time I wear it I get compliments. However the one bottle that I did have to have was tha Nars Audacious. The bottle is cool and I adore the fragrance. So many great houses and perfumers were mentioned. I am looking forward to be able to test some of these gorgeous mentioned scents.

  • I don’t what would be a worst fragrance. It seemed like a good year overall, but my best were Perris Monte Carlo Jasmine de Pays and Rose de Mai. I tried them early on and then they became Christmas gifts to myself. I live in the USA.

  • fleurdetilleul says:

On these lists there are only two fragrances I have tried: Gucci Mémoire d’une Odeur and Zara Ebony Wood. I’d say the first one is quite different from the other offerings on the mainstream market and I appreciate it for that. I live in EU. Thank you!

  • The Zara fragrances sound like fun, and I am excited about trying Rose et Cuir. Thank you for the opportunity to try the Botany set. I live in Canada.

  • Very informative list, thank you! I have not tried many, of all those mentioned, but i just start to notice that memoir d’une Odeur starts to pull itself into the foreground of my thoughts more and more – maybe for me the one fragrance which i did not buy but i think of constantly of the the year 🙂 Living in Germany, EU

  • Not participating here (I can’t)

A lot of names I never heard before.
Baruti Perverso, Arancia Di Sicilia, Jorum Studio Nectary and Drunk Providence Perfume Co On The Moon sounds so interesting and looks like something I would wear! I would like to try those, might order some samples for those.

  • I would love to try Francesca Bianchi’s sample set – the chance to sniff all those scents sounds just fab! I rely on CaFleureBon and Sebastian on Smelling Great for all my perfume news, so I think you are spot on! what did I like this year, oh, in Berlin I went to Frau Tonis Parfum, and had a wonderful time selecting some sample sets to bring home with me. You make me want to try your tie for best designer fragrances, If the Bianchi set is selected, then the Jorum Studio sample, then Queen Nzinga. in the US.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

I loved your list and you truly share and find some amazing creations. I personally did not enjoy D&G k and sadly have not tried any or the other fragrances in this list. I do not have access to them at all, but lf course love to lesrn about them and have a chance. I would love to experiance and share Francesca bianchi’s discovery set ! ❤

  • I concur with Ermano’s observation that bland fruity florals are over. I hope they will continue to retire in 2020 making place for new more diverse and more exiting players on the fragrance scene. Niche perfumes are, by the nature rarer and more exclusive, but I believe they can influence the mass production in a positive way.
I’d love to try any of the editor’s favorites. I’m in USA.

  • A pretty diverse list but with meaningful commentary. I’m a fan of both Francesca Bianchi’s Lost in Heaven and Les Indemodables (although i prefer their other compositions over Cuir de Chine). I would love a chance to win the Jorum Studio sample set. Based in Canada.

  • Great lists! I haven’t tried most of the individual fragrances mentioned, but I did try Memoire d’Une Odeur and liked it very much. 2019 seems to have been a very creative and productive year for many niche perfumers! Thanks for doing this; I am in the USA.
