Sarah Horowitz-Thran has been creating beautiful fragrances since the 1980s.    From her early years at Essence on Newbury Street in Boston until today Sarah has been refining her signature style as an independent perfumer. Also, as a consultant and olfactory artist, Sarah Horowitz-Thran has developed fragrances for individuals and for several perfume and cosmetic brands.  Selecting only three from her amazing oeuvre has been a daunting project. I have to admit that I have not tried every fragrance she has created, but there are three from Sarah Horowitz Parfums that I believe everyone should be wearing (or at least should try).

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Veil review

It is impossible to write about the three Sarah Horowitz Parfums You Should be Wearing without first mentioning her “Perfect” Line of fragrances.  Every one of Sarah’s Perfect Perfumes is an olfactory distillation of an emotional experience. The names say it all – Perfect Gardenia, Perfect Bliss, Perfect Kiss.

The most iconic and perhaps best known of all is her 1999 Perfect Veil. Perfect Veil is just that, a soft, translucent, subtle veil of scent; a second skin, so to speak, that feels and smells like a better version of my own skin. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Veil is an ethereal musk fragrance that blends the effervescent sparkle of lemon and bergamot with touches of vanilla and hints of sandalwood, resting on a variety of soft musks. The result is an exquisite and discreet aura of clean comfort that lingers and entices for hours. Notes: Lemon, bergamot, vanilla, sandalwood and musk.

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Cœur de Sang review

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Cœur de Sang (2015) is currently available only on special request from Sarah Horowitz Parfums Banq de Parfum. It is a rich, comforting fragrance, especially suited to the cool misty mornings, mellow, hazy afternoons and blustery cold evenings of autumn. Cœur de Sang opens with an intense, sweet-tart blood orange that immediately plays against a dark heart of black rose, buttery Mysore sandalwood and labdanum.  Tunisian opium and a nuance of iris lend powdery balsamic mystery to a complex base of two distinct ambers, vanilla and patchouli. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Cœur de Sang (Heart’s Blood) recalls, for just a moment, the big, bold ambers and orientals of the 80’s, but does so with a very original and subtle 21st century twist. With Cœur de Sang, Sarah Horowitz-Thran has incorporated and infused her signature style into a classic format, creating, in the process, an intriguing contemporary perfume that never fails to surprise me with distinctly new fragrant facets, every time I wear it! Notes: Blood orange, black rose, Mysore sandalwood, Tunisian amber, red amber, labdanum, benzoin, patchouli, Tunisian opium, vanilla and iris.

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Origin Story review.

Origin Story, composed in 2018 is one of the three fragrances in Sarah Horowitz Parfums Evolution Collection, reveals the perfumer’s history in scent, recalling apothecary bottles of mysterious oils in the long ago bespoke perfumery on Newbury Street.  The perfume initially manifests as bright, zesty yuzu, a scented vignette, seen through glasses tinged with balsam, tasting of the smallest hint of grapefruit pith.  The fruity tang of cassis carries both earthy and green minty undertones filled with wine, black roses and jasmine. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Origin Story ties this nostalgic bouquet of flowers and fruits with an herbaceous ribbon of clear Tunisian Patchouli.  Resinous pine suffuses rich amber.  China musk and Mysore sandalwood complete the Origin Story, a perfumed tale that is one of my favorite modern “new age” romances. Notes: Japanese yuzu, cassis, Jasmine grandiflorum, Egyptian jasmine, black rose, spicy patchouliFrench vanilla, China musk, Tunisian patchouli, Mysore sandalwood, and rich amber.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Sarah Horowitz Parfums for my cherished bottle of Cœur de Sang. I previously purchased Origin Story, and Perfect Veil. My opinions are my own.

  • I love the story that is told by these three selections – it feels like all three represent important moments of being. I would like Perfect Veil. The word “ethereal” seems like the right thing for our current moment – something that floats above just so, still in the world, but also a little protected. I am intrigued by the mentioned longevity.

  • All 3 of these perfumes sound interesting and make for a difficult choice. However, Coeur de Sang is the one i would choose. I enjoy ambers and the notes of this look great to me as well as different and interesting. I also like that Gail mentioned it being surprising and discovering different facets still with every wearing. It’s also cool that it’s only available by special request. Perfect veil did sound really nice too and after looking at the website I’m considering sampling that line. Origin Story also is intriguing i just am more drawn to Coeur de Sang thus am choosing that should I win. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Liked Gail’s detailed description of the three perfumes by Sarah. While all 3 sound great, if I am the lucky winner, I would like to get Cœur de Sang. Perfect Veil is composed of a few notes, but what lovely notes they are. Had difficulty choosing between Origin Story and Cœur de Sang, but would choose Cœur de Sang especially as it is only available on special requests from Sarah. Thanks for the generous draw and the review. Writing from the USA.

  • I would love to win the Cœur de Sang one. The base sounds extremely interesting and complex and I absolutely love a good dry down.

  • These three sound wonderful and eminently wearable. I was fortunate enough to try a sample of Perfect Veil and it is indeed a perfect second skin scent. I would love to try Cœur de Sang. I have a fondness for 1980s orientals and I’m interested in Sarah’s take on it because she is such a nuanced perfumer. Commenting from the US.

  • I love the stories behind these fragrances. Coeur de Sang sounds like my kind of scent with blood orange, ambers and patchouli. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • Always a pleasure reading the beautiful storytelling/reviews by Gail.
The origins of the 3 are interesting to say the least. Coeur de Sang would be terrific to win.
    Thanks for the giveaway

  • I love the scent of blood oranges and I see it so seldom used. Many thanks to Gail for her wonderful review of all three of these great scents. I think Coeur de Sang is calling my name right now, although I would be happy to receive any one of them should I be lucky enough to win. I’m in the USA

Thank you Sarah for your amazing creations and Gail Gross for writing beautifully about them.

  • Coeur de Sang appeals to me and that is my choice. The juxtaposition of the blood orange and black rose at the top, and the balsamic Tunisian opium and resins at the base, is really intriguing. This sounds like a perfectly blended scent, with the different accords working in concert to give off a “rich, comforting” vibe. I’m based in the US.

  • I love Sara Horowitz Parfums and everything about Gail’s reviews. I like that she picked three such different scents from different times. I have tried and love “Perfect Veil” her description is perfect. I would like to win Coeur de Sang.

  • All three sound really good. I had a tough time picking my favorite. I also reread this post a few times and depending on my mood I would think that I’d prefer a different perfume out of the three. But I think that in the end I have to pick the Origin Story as something that I’d love to try and win. The combination of yuzu and floral notes just sound so good! As always great review by Gail! I’m from Illinois, USA.

  • Perfect Veil sounds incredibly versatile and wearable and probably good for any number of seasons. Coeur de Sang, which is the one I would choose, seems the most ambiguous and seductive and I like the idea of it having two distinct ambers. Origin Story sounds really complicated and while I am sure Gail’s description is accurate, I can’t quite get my head around it. In the US, in NC.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow Cœur de Sang sounds amazing! I love those notes, although I have no idea what the different ambers actually smell like. I’m gearing up for some cozy fragrances. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Intrigued by perfect veil. The quality of having “second skin, so to speak, that feels and smells like a better version of my own skin” plus the notes on this scent are beautiful. I’m also very curious about Cœur de Sang being a contemporary fragrance mixed with classic style and the notes omg! With black rose, Blood orange, Mysore sand wood, amber, vanilla, iris, it sounds like a piece of heaven!

  • Coeur de Sang sounds amazing! I love eating Blood Orange because of the scent (deeper/darker) and the deep rich description of this scent makes me hungry
    Would love to be entered!

  • I enjoyed Nicoleta’s description of Perfect Veil as a light and ethereal fragrance with its citrusy and musky notes. I haven’t had the opportunity to try Sarah Horowitz’s creations, so this is a great opportunity! I am in the USA.

  • Perfect Veil really appeals to me! Always love the combination of musk, citruses, vanilla and sandalwood! It would be the one I would like to win.

  • I would love to win Cœur de Sang out of all of the fragrances listed. The fragrance just speaks to me, due to the way that Gail describes it. I am quite intrigued by the sweet-tart blood orange combined with the balsamic base. I would love to get my nose on this one. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • Thank you for the beautiful review Gail.
It’s amazing to see how different each of the fragrances are in their ideas and execution.
    Perfect veil sounds like gossamer.
Coeur de Sang sounds like a heavy blanket in cold weather
Origin Story reminds me off jumping into a newly made bed.

I would go with either Couer de Sand or Origin Story.

    Regards from WI, USA

  • All three fragrances are excellent, but the most excellent to me, and the one that I want to win, is Origin Story. The notes, I am sure,, meld excellently together, especially that Egyptian Jasmine and Black Rose.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA and want this. GIVE IT TO ME!

    Please and Thank You.

  • Hello! I would adore a bottle of Perfect Veil. I am very drawn to the lemon & vanilla notes in this clean fragrance!

  • I have heard so many positive things about Perfect Veil. Many people say it is the calmest and most ethereal fragrance. I, however, would choose Origin Story because of the Japanese yuzu note. When I lived in Japan, I used to buy yuzu and submerge the whole fruit in hot bath water. It’s the most soothing scent experience you can imagine…I love that Sarah worked on Newbury Street in Boston, That’s one of my favourite shopping streets in the world.
Again, I would choose Origin Story. I live in the USA.

  • I would love the opportunity to try Coeur de Sang! What appealed most to me about this particular parfum was the Blood Orange as I am all about any citrus-y scents, & then I loved how it ends with vanilla! I have loved Sarah’s perfumes for years when I was first introduced to Perfect Veil! You can truly see Sarah’s love for concocting beautiful fragrances through the wonderful finished products, which I am sure bring joy & a smile to many peoples’ faces, including mine!

  • Honeydew Crenshaw says:

These all sound so exclusive and luxurious – Cœur de Sang, however, is the most intriguing and the patchouli, vanilla, iris combo sounds delicious

  • Beautifully described fragrances by Gail. In her words I see her love for Sarah Horowitz Parfums. Her descriptions and notes of Cœur de Sang sound amazing in that everytime she wears it different facets of the fragrance come through. Surprise! I would like to win that one. California.

  • All of these fragrances sound intriguing, especially the Coeur de Sang and Origin Story. I like that Origin Story is a history of Sarah’s journey as a perfumer; the name of the fragrance is fitting! I find the spicy patchouli note rather intriguing. Coeur de Sang sounds AMAZING and hard to come by. Thank you for the review of the fragrances and the generous giveaway, I’m located in the US.

  • Really, all three of them sound very appealing, just different facets for different moods and atmospheres! My favorite of the three is Cœur de Sang, with the woods and resins as the oriental style fragrances really speak to me. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Michael Prince says:

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Veil sounds amazing to me. A nice blend of citrus and ethereal musk with vanilla and sandalwood. A second skin and subtle fragrance that is perfect for any occassion. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • I would love to try ANY of Sarah Horowitz’s fragrances, as they all sound beautiful, but Gail’s description of Perfect Veil appeals to me the most right now, with its sparkling beginning and soft finish.

  • It’s hard not to be intrigued by Gail’s cherished bottle of Cœur de Sang, but I tend more toward jasmines and the apothecary on Newberry Street conjures an appealing image. I’d love to win and try Origin Story. I live in the USA.

  • I would love to try Cœur de Sang. As lovers of Mysore Sandalwood go, I’m in there with the best of them. Indeed, I wear vintage scents such as Samsara and Sensuous Just to enjoy that lovely, buttery note. But in combination with Blood Orange, Tunisian Amber, Rose, and Labdinum, I’m reminded of the time I spent in the southern Mediterranean and hope to be transported there again.
