Sarah Baker Far From the Madding Crowd, Charade, and Symmetry

Choices, choices! Depending on your mood, atmosphere, occasion, intention, or just random grab-and-go? Options of choosing three different fragrances from Sarah Baker Perfumes have grown with the most recent S.Baker Collection, featuring five new Eau de Parfums created by different perfumers: Bascule – Ashley Eden Kessler, Flame & Fortune – Sarah Baker, G Clef – Sarah Baker, Symmetry – Chris Maurice, and Far From the Madding Crowd – Miguel Matos. There’s something else absolutely new:  were created by Sarah Baker herself! You are maybe already familiar with the Extrait Collection by Sarah Baker so I’ve included one Extrait that’s not much talked about, and I’ll tell you why I think it deserves bright spotlights and applause.

Let’s take a closer look at these three you should be wearing,(and why):

Sarah Baker Perfumes Charade review

still from the 1963 movie Charade

Sarah Baker Perfumes Charade / Andreas Wilhelm: Let’s get classical and well-groomed like a 1950s movie star, even if it’s an illusion created by perfume only (and even if you’re attending your Zoom meetings following the business dress-code from the waist up, and with comfy slippers on your feet – as I do). Charade is a tuberose-on-leather chypre, spelling timeless elegance, black-and-white movies, Carry Grant and Audrey Hepburn, a humble polo neck turned iconic, and the allure of quintessential gentleman. Even at home, even in your PJ’s. Raise your hand if you’re missing being or just feeling elegant, or better yet, spray some Charade on! Sarah Baker Charade greets you with flirty tuberose while white flowers giggle behind its back, and then it melts your heart with a thin layer of ylang-ylang and honey. The leather is rather grainy and rough but what it achieves is that its animalic embraces all the tuberose’s indolic in a movie-like romantic/dramatic scene followed by green depths of inevitable romance between patchouli and moss. Forever elegant, expressive, and never forgotten: this dashing chypre was made for making a statement. Even if no one else is around, impress yourself.  You will be sporting that Carry Grant signature smile immediately.  Notes: French Tubereuse, Ylang-Ylang, Styrax, Benzoin Siam, Leather, Patchouly, Honey, Sandalwood, Amber, Vetiver, Moss.

S.Baker Far From the Madding Crowd Review

Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe  Edouard Manet

Sarah Baker Perfumes Far From The Madding Crowd / Miguel Matos: Close your eyes and enter a pastoral landscape like the ones you can find on 19th-century paintings, where nature is a comforting source of overall wellbeing. Hidden spots where lovers meet,  picturesque meadows, well-kept lawns, and endless orchards with ripe fruits. Gardens of Eden on Earth. Ah, the sensuality of nature, the thrill of hiding behind veils of green, and the sheer joy of being in the fresh air!  A tempting call coming from Far From the Madding Crowd invites you for a walk through crisp countryside air filled with an air of bergamot freshness hovering over the green-green grass of home. A straight-to-the-point and welcoming feeling, one that you would hungrily breathe in, filling your lungs fully as joy of life throbs through your entire body.

It’s the eucalyptus that plays an interesting role in this accord, giving it a touch of minty freshness on one side and Mediterranean herbs on the other, and a slight touch of spices provides depth. Flowers are a part of this idyllic scenery, rounding and completing it in a gentle way. Just as your senses grow accustomed to all this vivid and youthful greenery, ripe fruits chime in. Fruit-bearing branches are bending to the ground under the weight of juicy, ripe fruits. Somewhere in this orchard, there’s a jasmine blooming, hidden in shades and calling you to come closer. Miguel’s jasmine seems to always carry a carnal breath to the composition, and so this landscape changes. As you move away from your lovely and oh-so-decent picnic blanket set upon the soft green grass, you enter the shades, juices of ripe fruits picked from a tree and eaten with lust trickle down your chin, and a more sensual feeling emerges, filled with animalic tones. A beautiful flora and fauna drydown follows, infused by well-blended musks and oakmoss. Much more complicated than it might seem at first sniff,  Sarah Baker Perfumes Far From the Madding Crowd is an intricate and emotional journey between light and dark, sense and sensibility, and it’s exciting every step of the way. Notes: Heliotrope, Bergamot, Petitgrain, Eucalyptus, Black Cassis, Myrtle, Plum, Jasmine, Cedar, Castoreum, Musk, Oakmoss

S.Baker Symmetry review

Cultural Institute Of The Rep. Isl. Of The Iran In Rome – The Dome

Sarah Baker Perfumes S.Baker Symmetry/ Chris Maurice: Proportion and balance, in nature and in human relationships: things you immediately FEEL on subconscious levels, like empathy, reciprocity, or sympathy. Or in relation to aesthetics, like the immediate attractiveness of bilateral symmetry. Preferably approximate, and with enough complexity to keep things interesting. But instead of being in perfect symmetry, Symmetry feels to me more like a play of searching for, and finding – balance. What Chris Maurice has created reminds me of the two faces of Janus – the god of transitions, duality, doorways, and gates: it all depends on which one you’ll enter. Luckily, with Symmetry, you can’t go wrong.

Almost at first, you can feel two things seemingly opposite: the freshness of citruses meeting the depths of oud, with a whole array of push-and-pull sensations straight from the beginning. Sarah Baker Perfumes Symmetry is not as much a story about clearly defined contrasts, but rather seeking and finding balance. What impressed me the most is that this is a multifunctional perfume – while it may seem that it performs as a cologne at first and that it can perform the best in warmer weather, it delivers the blast of citruses tainted with traces of oud from the very beginning! This is not just a cologne, by no means. The smoothness and depths of oud with some amber is in fine balance with a cat-eyed green cypriol, with the warm-skin musky tones enveloping you closely in the drydown.  Don’t let this oud scare you, it plays its role perfectly, showing up in different stages of development where it should be, doing what it should do to assure that you are fully enveloped in a very cozy fruity-musky fragrant cocoon, soaked in oud-colored warmth that’s bound to perform a different play in every season in the year. Although this collection features Eau de Parfum concentrations, longevity and projection are above average, and these citruses seem to carry on forever and ever, to the bottom, just as oud moves all the way to the top!  Symmetry is energetic and soothing at the same time: finding balance in life matters. Notes: Bergamot, Petitgrain, Neroli, Orange Blossom, Amber, Cypriol, Musk, Oud.

All sound very nice, but Far From The Maddening Crowd caught my attention due to the eucalyptus, love mint in a fragrance.
All sound beautiful and fit different folks preferences.
    Pennsylvania USA

  • Wow that’s one fabulous article! I’m so honored. Thank you very much, Elena, for these well crafted words! Thank you, CaFleureBon, for being wonderful, 🙂

  • WeAreScentient says:

Elena paints such a beautiful picture especially of Far From the Madding Crowd. She nailed the beautiful play between florals & fruits with the undercurrent of carnality. Charade too makes me feel dressed up even when I’m not, that air of class is captured in the tuberose on leather combo is stunning. I love her reviews & writing.
    I’d love Charade & I’m in Dublin, Ireland 🙂

  • I had a sample of “Tartan” that I absolutely adored! I loved the edenic description of Far From The Madding Crowd and would love to try it for myself. Based in the US.

  • I’m so pleased with Elena’s choices here! I love the Sarah Baker house because even the fragrances that aren’t my cup of tea impress and intrigue me in some way and dare me to try them again and again.
Charade despite not being talked about much, is my favourite. As Elena describes it does feel vintage like a 1950s movie star but also has something very contemporary. Love wearing this when I need a boost of confidence.
The Miguel Matos creations for Sarah Baker follow closely and Far From the Maddening Crowd isn’t different. A great naughty roll in the hay or picnic.
Symmetry is one of those fragrances that I find challenging. Probably this is the oudh, a note that I struggle with. The push-and-pull sensation that Elena mentions is exactly what I experience in the contradictions in this perfume. One I will be returning to.
As I already lovingly embrace Charade, I would love to try more of Far From the Maddening Crowd. Marit UK

  • Claumarchini says:

What a great review! Sometimes I must confess I struggle to follow all the notes and to fully understand how a fragrance might smell, but here Elena really pictures perfectly the notes and evolution of these perfumes! They all seem fab, if I had to choose I would pick Far from the madding crowd! I live in Milan, Italy

  • Interesting perfumes and Elena’s reviews for sure. All three perfumes appeal to me in this situation of working from home. I find my self needing elegant fragrances like Charade to feel nicer since I’ve been working from home for far too long. On the other hand I sometimes need fragrances like Far from Madding Crowd to relax and imagine I’m somewhere calm and nice in nature…and not at home. Although Symmetry would probably do the same thing for me given it’s nice citrusy notes. I live in Illinois US. Out of the three I would pick Charade.

  • Kirsten Mae says:

These all sound so amazing, but Charade definitely sounds like something I dream of! Lovely review for lovely fragrances! Thank you for the draw! Im in Colorado USA

  • Symmetry sounds right up my alley! I really enjoy fragrances that have tension – like a counterpoint in music – because they grab my interest and command my attention. As a lover of both citruses and oud, I’m intrigued by the composition and would love to see how they’re juxtaposed against each other with finesse.

I live in the UK, and would love to have Symmetry. Thank you for hosting the giveaway!

  • They all sound wonderful but Symmetry sounds like the one I’d wear for my enjoyment alone which dictates most of my fragrance choices these days. Michigan USA

  • i want to soekl like a gentleman in my zoom meetings so i would choose charade. Anyway i enjoy classic scents and cant handle to green ones

  • Each review is so eloquently put, far more than mere listing of notes. The description of the timeless elegance of Charade in particular is something I would identify with and would be the direction which I would lean. California, USA

  • I’m a goner for a well composed chypre, so I’m most interested in S Baker Charade. I love tuberose and the combination with leather and honey sounds warm, elegant and slightly naughty. All of the fragrances sound delightful. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • zacharyari23 says:

I really enjoy reading Elena’s reviews, and these three of course did not disappoint. I really liked reading about the play in balance of Symmetry. I haven’t come across many, but I have really enjoyed a well-known Lime/Oud fragrance. This one jumped out at me. If I had the chance to pick, I would definitely go for S.Baker Collection Symmetry EDP, though the others sounded great as well. Writing from Colorado.

  • Elena’s review are on the point.
I particularly love far from the maddening crowd due to the eucalyptus invigorating note.
I can see myself wearing that. I hail
    From PA, USA

  • I think that I’m drawn to Far from the Madding Crowd at this point. I would love to be in that pastoral landscape right at this moment. Elena’s review made it really difficult to make that choice as all of these fragrances sound wonderful. Many thanks to Elena for her great review and many thanks to Sarah Baker Perfumes for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • wow, all the scents sound lovely, but Charade speaks to me most. I never think of myself as elegant, so wearing an elegant scent sounds nice, and i like the sound of leather and tuberose. thank you for the really lovely reviews and the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I would pick Far From the Madding Crowd because I love eucalyptus, cassis, and plum a ton, I love in Ohio U.S., and I loved Elena’s review, specifically her words on Maldini and how much she liked it, she described it wonderfully.

  • Interesting connections drawn in the interview! I’d like to try Charade , i saw a youtuber review it and it sounds unique. Im in Philadelphia

  • I really liked reading the line, “the freshness of citruses meeting the depths of oud, with a whole array of push-and-pull sensations straight from the beginning.” I really had to think of what this would smell like. I live in Florida and the fragrance I would choose is Sarah Baker Perfumes Symmetry.

  • I really liked reading about the balance of Symmetry which relates to its name I suppose. It balances the light with the dark and I always love fragrances that make me stop and think about what the fragrance is trying to convey. I live in the US and I would like to win Symmetry because it sounds really interesting.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

    What a great review!
I choose Charade because I love elegante and feminine touberose
as Elena describes it does feel vintage like a 1950s movie star but also has something very contemporary
    I am from Eu Bucharest

  • Symmetry sounds like a wonderful citrus fragrance that I would enjoy during the summer months. Thanks for another great article and great draw! Mich USA

  • I’ve been intrigued by Sarah’s fragrances for a while, and Elena’s descriptions are very vivid. I especially liked the sound of a tuberose/leather embrace in Charade, so that’s the one I would choose if I were the lucky one.
    Roger from London, UK

  • I really appreciate reviews like this , where you get a plethora of choices and get to learn about so many offerings from a house. I adore Sarah’s creations and charade sounds like everything I love in a bottle.

    Florida, usa 🙂

  • Bryant Worley says:

I think Elena’s review of the Sarah Baker Perfumes Three You Should Be Wearing was excellent. For all three, she painted a lovely picture of each fragrance (especially “The Malding Crowd”, and how each would/should waft off our skin. Just FANTASTIC! BRAVA!

Eventhough I think she really ‘put her foot’ into the picture she painted for “The Madding Crowd, the one that I would choose is Charade. The notes are so excellent, and I can already smell it. And what man can resist the opportunity to potentially sport the Carry Grant signature smile.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

I am intrigued by the citrus and mix of oud, cypriol and musk. A beautiful piece by Elena intrigued by all the fragrances but Symmetry takes the cake. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

A beautiful description by Charade by Elena nailed it perfectly patchouli and moss mix sounds like a magical concoction. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • jayne_nalanga says:

Far from the Madding Crowd beckons me! From Elena’s beautiful description to the note breakdown, it feels like a breathe of fresh air!
    Love from Puyallup, WA USA

  • Great reviews Elena and amazing aditions to the Sara Baker perfums collection. I fall in love with Charade, the one I choose, the beautiful Stanley Donen Film… Cary Grant is the best actor of all times… with the Charade perfume and the Henry Mancini music… I will mind fly to Paris. I live in EU, in Spain.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Thanks for the draw. I love the pictures Elana chose for her review, they transprt very well the scents. I live in the EU, I think, all perfumes sound very very intersting and are worth trying but as a Tubereuse fan I would chose Charade.

  • Love the Sarah Baker perfume line-up ! Charade would definitely be the one i’d choose. Based in the EU

  • I never had the opportunity to test any Sarah Baker perfumes. But from all the review I always found them a little bit on the edgier side. Elena here describe them beautifully, and make me want to dip my toes in it.
Particulary with Symmetry, that I would pick, where she reassure us to not be afraid of this oud, and to let us be conforted in it’s “cozy fruity-musky fragrant cocoon, soaked in oud-colored warmth”.
    France EU

  • Wonderful article by Elene, very descriptive and lovely presentation. All of the scents sound beautiful to me but definetely the one that caught my attention the most is Charade. If I had the chance to chose I would pick Charade 50 ml Extrait bottle. I’m from Bulgaria.

  • Symmetry has citruses that seem to carry on forever and ever, to the bottom, just as oud moves all the way to the top! That’s the one for me that I would love to try, though the description of the other two makes them quite interesting also. Thank you for this draw. Greetings from Athens-Greece.

  • They all sound desirable to try. The description of one got me a bit more though. I would choose Far from the Maddening Crowd for this draw. US

  • Judging by the review, I’m interested to try all three of these fragrances, but I believe that I’d choose the one that is called “Symmetry”. I’m interested in seeing what the oud with citrus combination is like. I’m also interested in trying a Sarah Baker Perfumes fragrance for the first time. I appreciate that Elena mentioned that the overall performance of these fragrances is good. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Elena’s review is so full of detail.. She does a really great job of putting scent into words. It is a tough call, but I would want Symmetry, if I were to win. I am in Kansas, USA.

  • I’ve literally never smelled a Sarah Baker perfume I didn’t like (and just sprung for Greek Keys, despite my – and my wallet’s – best efforts). All of these perfumes sound amazing – but Far from the Madding Crowd seems most interesting, because of the eucalyptus. I’m still looking for a scent w/ eucalyptus. I had huge hopes for Zoologist’s Koala, but it turns out the scent lasts about 30 minutes on me before I can no longer smell it.

I’m in DC (and would choose Far from the Madding Crowd, although all of them sound *heavenly*).

Timelessly elegant, expressive tuberose-on-leather chypre and a unisex one too, oh my! I really wish to meet this unisex tuberose! Charade is definitely the one that caught my attention thanks to the enticing description Elena wrote! I live in the EU. Thanks for the chance!

  • Thank you for making my December 2020 more enjoyable. I’ve just found your site a few weeks ago, and I’ve been learning a lot by reading great reviews.
Elena’s vivid depiction of perfumes made me intrigued about the house Sarah Baker Perfumes. Citrusy-woody dance, as described by Elena, in Symmetry made my mind about which perfume I would like to try first. I live in the EU.

  • MarcelRoosUSA says:

    Elena, great article as always!

I really like how you paint vivid images with your words, it brings the notes and accords alive!

Charade sounds like it would definitely be my favorite. Ylang-Ylang, honey, sandalwood, and amber are all notes that I really enjoy! I also like that it sounds so sophisticated with the blend of the other notes.

    New York, USA.

  • I would love to try Far from the madding crowd. I love the sound of a mediterran scent with the addition of eucalyptus. I am in U.K.

  • The Plum Girl says:

Thank you for all your wonderful comments, I’m really happy to share my take on these fragrances with you. And even if you didn’t click with any of these described – there are more from this brand so take your time and explore! I’m sure you’ll find at least one you’ll love. Good luck to all!

  • Out of the three, I would go with Charade because I loved the movie. An instant classic that it’s still talked after so many years. If the perfume is as nice as the film, then it’s extraordinary!
I am in Europe. Thank you!

  • I always love myself a chypre created in the old style of the chypres. You know what they say: no school like the old school!
It is time to bring back the timeless elegance and style of those times! Charade it is for me then!
    Thank you! Romania, Europe.

  • I LOVE Elena’s description of “cat-eyed green cypriol”. What an evocative way of phrasing it! While all three of these fragrances sound lovely, the described “push-and-pull” between oud and citruses caught my eye the most, so I would choose the bottle of Symmetry if I won. I am in the US 🙂

  • Thank you for the beautiful reviews of all three fragrances. Far from the Maddening Crowd, in both name and description, feels like it is speaking directly to my soul. I am in the US.

  • wandering_nose says:

A lovely compilation of the attention worthy offerings from the house – a great read and a time saver, thank you Elena! Sarah Baker fragrances are getting me more and more intrigued! I am most attracted to Symmetry. Based in Ireland.

  • I like everything about Far From the Madding Crowd – the name, the notes, the bottle…
    I live in Zagreb, Croatia.

  • Far from the Maddening Crowd sounds most appealing! I love Elena’s inclusion of art and photography to her articles. The Manet painting seems a perfect match to this scent as she described it. I still have yet to experience any of Sarah Baker’s fragrances – would love to try them!
    Boston area

  • bigscoundrel says:

Love the smell of Charade, but I’d like to win Far From the Madding Crowd. It sounds like the plum and black cassis really made quite an impression. New Jersey, USA

  • Lovely descriptions of three very different fragrances, each with its own inspiration. Although I always enjoy chypres, but am going to pick Far From The Madding Crowd: the notes are intriguing and unusual, and I am interested in trying one of Miguel Matos’ creations. I am in a USA.

  • I appreciated Elena’s selection very much. She picked three fragrances that sound totally different from one another, and all three are described eloquently and skillfully.
I would personally pick Charade. Some class and glamour would be very welcome indeed…even between four walls I live in the EU, thanks Elena for the review and Sarah Baker for the generosity!

  • Amazing article. Love all Sarah Baker’s collection but from this article and all references made, I have to say that I’ll love to get my nose on Far From the Madding Crowd. I love the green and the idea of a comforting garden, far from people and crowds. Thank you for the opportunity to participate. Commenting from Orlando, Fl. USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I have never tried any Sarah Baker perfumes so I’m finding it incredibly difficult to choose one should I be lucky enough to win. These all sound so lovely but I think Charade is edging out the others. The leather and tuberose combo sound gorgeous. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Beautiful review, Elena! I loved the description of the three perfumes, I could imagine them so well I could almost smell them.
They all sound wonderful scents, but I would like to win Far From the Madding Crowd.
    I live in the UK.

  • symmetry because symemetry is the sense of life. this would be my choice. thanks. V from Romania, EU

  • All sound beautiful, but I musta say, when I hear tuberose, the sky turns purple :))).
One of my friends said that the only perfume she’d want to own [after getting rid of all her other perfumes] would be a Sarah Baker. So, obviously, I’m so so so so tremendously curious. But for now, I think I would like to start with Charade. And then let her know 🙂
    I live in Europe.

  • Not having tried any of these three fragrances, I found them all most alluring from Elena’s fetching descriptions.
If I was to choose one, it’d be the tuberose/leather charm of Charade – and yes, it’s cinema-referencing name did influence my choice A LOT!
    Best from France (EU)

  • Choices choices indeed. Based on Elena’s description, Far From The Madding Crowd sounds my kind of fragrance. Freshness of eucayptus, touch of spices, heady jasmine, juicy fruits infused with musk and oakmoss. Dreamy! IL, USA

  • Thank you for these reviews! I think Charade appeals to me most since I love a good leather fragrance. I really need to give this house a try. I’m in the US.

  • From Elena’s reviews, they all seem wonderful, but I am drawn to Symmetry especially as she says it is energetic and soothing at the same time. Plus, it has Oud, which is my favorite, plus so many citruses, such as Bergamot, Petitgrain, Neroli, Orange Blossom. And it also has musk and Amber – seems all of the classics are in this fragrance, and one can’t go wrong with this one. So based on Elena’s reviews, I will choose Symmetry, if I were to win this draw.

Thanks for the reviews and the generous draw.
    Writing from the USA.

  • I thought that Elena’s review was really quite interesting. I liked reading about that each fragrance had a distinct story and reasoning behind their creation. I really like learning about the backstories of fragrances. They all sound amazing but I think that I would choose Symmetry just because I really like oud fragrances and I would like to know what it would be like to be paired with citrus. I live in Florida, US. Thanks!

  • All These sound very good, but if I would have a chance to win, I would pick Charade. I am in Finland, EU.

  • Vanillander65 says:

    Thank you for the review!
I love how Charade sounds, I’m fascinated by the 50’s and black & white movies, so that timeless elegance is something that I always wish to experience.
    I am from EU.

  • Thanks for a great review, Elena! Your description of the scents really give the readers the vibe the perfumer wants to convey through their creations. My favorite would be Charade because of its tuberose and leather accords. I would be thrilled to win it! Thanks for this draw. – CA, USA

  • Thank you for the great reveiw Elena. I really like the detai that you put into reviewing all three scents, particularly the Alice in Wonderland like description of Far from the Madding Crowd.

I would love to win a bottle of Far from the Madding Crowd.

    Cheers from Madison, WI, USA

  • Scott Morrison says:

Of these, I would choose Charade. My wife’s favorite movie is Charade (if you have not seen it, do yourself a favor and watch this hidden gem). The combination of leather and tuberose sounds mesmerizing and very elegant. We live in Utah.

  • All of the fragrances Elena reviewed sound fantastic, but the review of Charade sold me. Oh, how I love 1950s elegance. I live for finding just a little bit of elegance in each and every day; perfumes help with this. The leather and tuberose combination is sure to make an elegant statement.
    I would definitely choose Charade.
    I live in the USA.

  • Oooo Symetry sounds soo good. I love the notes, ant its style. I like this tyope o reviews – souple of fragrances of one brand in one article, it give a lot of information and i can compare a coouple of interesting fragrances at one time. I had a chance to wear some fragrances by Sarah Baker and they were so clasy. Poland, EU

  • I choose Charade. It seems to be the most unusual and extraordinary. I like perfumes made for making a statement. I believe perfume should stand out in the crowd. Charade is just like that. I live in the EU.

  • All the scents sounds pretty good to me, but if I have to pick one I suppose Far From The Madding Crowd would be my choice with the freshness and green notes, makes it sound like a great day to day scent

    from Denmark

  • Though I like and appreciate Elena’s warning about the oud in Symmetry, I would choose Far from the Madding Crowd as I love all things green in perfume. I’m in the UK

  • The flirty tuberose, ylang ylang and honey in Charade sounds amazing to me! Can’t wait to try it out!
Would love to win the Charade 50 ml Extrait!
    Florida, USA
