Sarah Baker Perfumes Bascule Review (Ashley Eden Kessler) + Horses, Hay and Leather Draw

Sarah Baker Perfumes Bascule review from the new S. Baker collection

Have you ever observed a horse approaching an obstacle in a gracious stride, engaging hind legs forward under the body, flexing loins, with hind legs lined up together to push upwards? The beauty of these magnificent animals moving up and forward to prepare for the jump is immense, the movement of muscles under shiny, well-groomed horse coat powerful.

Sarah Baker Perfumes Bascule review

Bascule – Horse Jump, photo by Equine Wellness Magazine

Their necks are extended, forelegs folded up and curved during the takeoff phase, and that specific and exact moment when a horse flies over the obstacle (measured in seconds), when the whole muscular body of magnificent animal curves in mid-air to form an arc (bascule in French) – is simply spectacular. Bascule is considered to be one of the most beautiful segments of equestrian show jumping – an athletic activity that requires almost a symbiosis of a rider and a horse, and always manages to leave observers breathless.

When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes. ”  – William Shakespeare / Henry V

The Hippodrome not far away from where I live and the relaxed atmosphere of observing a horse-jumping show is where Bascule transported me in a matter of seconds! Memories began to float, and I felt an air of joy and anticipation that’s breezing around you when you walk slowly across a well-groomed, freshly mowed grass field above the track as you approach white tents scattered around the field, providing shade above carefully arranged tables with crisp-white settings. Cold drinks and cocktails decorated with lemon spirals are served to welcome the guests, and waiters circle around with trays of petits fours frais, cubes of juicy peaches, and yet the scent of soft grass carpet you are standing on is present at all times. The show, and everything surrounding the show was always classy, I remember.  You can hear horses nearby, the sound of their snorting and neighing signaling their excitement. Those stables are kept impeccably clean, and the scent of fresh hay on a sunny afternoon is soothingly sweet-leaning and tenderly earthy-warm. I find the hay accord used in Sarah Baker Perfumes Bascule addictive; it adds extra depth to the scent and builds an interesting passage towards the deeper tones and a change of atmosphere that follows. As the fragrance develops further on my skin, it feels as moments when the attention of spectators on the hippodrome shifts toward riders on the course, with their meticulous attire, well-polished leather riding boots, and to horses with carefully adjusted martingales, bridles, crops, and shiny twinkles of spurs in the sunshine. What surprised me the most is that the very smooth vetiver note at one moment reminded me of the scent of a clean horse, an amazing and delicious smell of a fine and well-groomed animal that you can feel if you lay your head against a horse’s and bury your nose in it!

S.Baker Perfumes Bascule review

The beautifully balanced dry down brings forward traces of softly glowing amber that swirls around more balsamic and aromatic notes, with earthy vetiver touched by dry white tobacco that is slightly spicy at moments. Sarah Baker Perfumes Bascule thrusts off with impeccably-groomed fields of fresh grass, adds a touch of elegance by well-dosed citruses-infused bitterness, canters in a round, balanced frame with neatly arranged and addictive smelling stacks of hay, jumps over a steeple-chase fence wearing high leather boots, and finishes all the combinations and all the rounds of its development in a well-composed way, remaining refined until the end of the competition. Poise, angelic grace, and effortless elegance: even when your horse acts stubbornly, or you step into a pile of dung.

Notes: grass, peach, bergamot, Lily of the Valley, hay, leather, vetiver, amber, musk, fir, tobacco, metal tack.

Editor’s Note: Bascule, is a new fragrance and one of five launched  in the “S.Baker Collection” last week.  Perfumer Ashley Eden Kessler has been developing it since 2015! Sarah Baker,   the house’s founder and creative director makes her debut as a perfumer, contributing two fragrances in this collection: G Clef and Flame & Fortune. Far From The Madding Crowd is created by Miguel Matos, and Christian Carbonell composed Symmetry.

S. Baker Collection via Sarah Baker

The London-based Sarah Baker Perfumes brand launched the new S. BAKER Collection last week as an adjunct to its existing collection. They are Eau de Parfum and lighter than Extrait de Parfum fragrances the house is known for. Sarah refers to them on the brand’s new website as: “spanking new, and for Very Important Parfumistas“. Each fragrance is available in a rectangular 50 ml glass bottle with a matching gunmetal cap, and the label on the signature is made of matte gray paper by British heritage papermakers G.F. Smith.

Sarah Baker explains: “For quite a while I thought there was a need for this kind of collection. Everyone in the industry knows that fresh, light fragrances are very popular. But we wanted to try and approach it in a new way, a way that isn’t obvious. The heritage of cologne was the starting point—even though this collection is entirely Eau de Parfums. We want a good spectrum of variety within the core concept, and I think we’ve achieved that, from the lightest, angelic meadow freshness on one end of the spectrum, to smoky, burned notes, combined with juicy freshness and florals on the other.“

The new S.Baker Collection is currently available in the USA exclusively at https://www.sarahbakerperfumes.shop/  Available to the rest of the world online at https://www.sarahbakerperfumes.com/ and at select stockists.

  • This one sounds magical for the autumn. I’m particularly intrigued by that vetiver note that Elena mentions reminded her of a clean horse. An old friend of mine had a mother that used to train horses and I’m rather familiar with that smell – and combined with stacks of hay and hints of tobacco, I can only imagine the effect. In fact, a different friend from grad school (who I had a crush on) was an accomplished equestrian and I once got to see her in full kit. Something about a woman in uniform… Don’t have a favourite from Sarah, but I do wonder if Bascule would give me flashbacks of what might have been eh? We shall see. Canada.

I loved all the sensory details of the Hippodrome, as well as the vivid descriptions of the propulsive movement of horses! This sounds absolutely lovely. I appreciate and seek out all things hay, and would be excited to try this. Love hearing it’s a mix of grass, dry hay, citrus, tobacco, etc. I haven’t tried any of Baker’s perfumes. Thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the US.

I enjoyed Elena’s description of equestrian horse jumping. The idea of a leather scent blended to capture the feeling of attending this event sounds interesting. I live in Maryland USA.

This fragrance sounds DIVINE!!! I used to ride, and love anything equestrian-inspired. I enjoyed Elena’s very visual description of this fragrance. The only Sarah Baker fragrance I’ve tried is Charade, which I love. I would love to try Bascule! Located in the US.

  • I loved everything about this review. The description of the Hippodrome was so evocative I loved feeling I was there. I have tried Charade from Sarah Baker and it’s a firm favourite. I’d love to try more especially if this new style conjures up horses! I am in U.K.

I really liked the atmosphere that Elena presented to convey Sarah Baker’s wonderful scent. I tried only only jungle jezbel so far

  • amber and aromatic notes are my thing im sure i will enjoy this more in the drydown. I havent tried anything from the brand as they are not available in my country. Im from Greece, Europe

  • I love horses, I used to ride years ago. I always loved the smell of horses and the place they were in. This fragrance sounds very nostalgic and calming. I would very like to try it. I never had a chance to try anything from this brand. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Just wow. This perfume sounds AMAZING. What a perfect perfume for autumn! I love the sound of peach, hay and leather blending together. I’ve never tried Baker’s fragrances. I live in the USA

  • I love the smells of hay but in my opinion, silage is more of an olfactive bomb of fermented grasses and weeds, when you open a fresh bale of silage the experience of smelling all the juices dripping outside of the plastic is multidimensional, like mule wine, rancid, sweet, narcotic-like. Animals will search with their noses for the more aromatic and tasteful parts.
Equestrian sports can trace their roots as far back as ancient Greece, where dressage was developed as a way to prepare horses for war. For me, the horse is the most gracious of all animals: elegant, powerful, muscular, full of grace.
Bascule is a vision of both the horse and the equestrian sports, an Aromatic Fougere like the wild country on a summer day, and the horse represented with the tobacco and the leather. The presentation in itself is a work of art and very thoughtful the use of papermakers G.F. Smith for the label, .well designed and a very interesting collection of perfumes to discover. Thank you . Ireland.

I enjoyed how Elena changed my thinking. I would ordinarily have thought of a horse as something I would not want to smell like. But she suggested how great the vetiver-like smell of a really clean horse might be, and how mixed with the aromas of fresh hay and grass and leather and tobacco and citrus it could be something special. I don’t know any Sarah Baker scents, but this gets me curious. I live in the U.S., in North Carolina.

  • Thank you for introducing this perfume house. I didn’t know about it. Horses are indeed amazing animals. Bascule sounds very intriguing. And the description of the notes by Elena is spot on as always. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • My daughters used to ride and I remember all the scents associated with horse shows. The jumps were always the most exciting parts of the show. Leather, hay, grass, vetiver and metal tack (!) all conjure images of Saturday mornings at the equestrian farm. I’ve not tried anything from Sarah Baker before. Commenting from the US.

  • I enjoyed the comparison of the scent of the perfume to the scene of a jockey showing off their equestrian skills. I think that is such a neat concept of which I have never heard. I have never tried a Sarah Baker fragrance before so I am hoping to with this giveaway. I reside in Florida, in the United States.

This review reminded me of my childhood.
I grew up in a city of Ploiesti that has a racetrack wirh racecourse
as big as a park. Every Sunday there were derbies and I often went to see the horses elegantly running jockey handballs on the track. it was fascinating to see these graceful and powerful animals. Everything smelled around the grass with wildflowers, roses, flowering trees, or dried leaves depending on the season. Of course, among these fresh smells was the smell of hot running horses, leather from taut harnesses and the stable.

  • I live in the US and I have not tried any Sarah Baker perfumes. I liked this about Elana’s review, great description and those notes are intriguing. Metal tack? How interesting. “Sarah Baker Perfumes Bascule thrusts off with impeccably-groomed fields of fresh grass, adds a touch of elegance by well-dosed citruses-infused bitterness, canters in a round, balanced frame with neatly arranged and addictive smelling stacks of hay, jumps over a steeple-chase fence wearing high leather boots, and finishes all the combinations and all the rounds of its development in a well-composed way, remaining refined until the end of the competition. Poise, angelic grace, and effortless elegance: even when your horse acts stubbornly, or you step into a pile of dung.

Notes: grass, peach, bergamot, Lily of the Valley, hay, leather, vetiver, amber, musk, fir, tobacco, metal tack.”

  • Elena’s review brought back many fond memories of show jumping, dressage, and all the many elements of that world. As I read the notes, I can almost envision this fragrance. Many thanks for a wonderful review and to Sarah Baker Perfumes for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA.

  • S.Baker Bascule is an aromatic and earthy amber that seems suited to the upcoming cold weather. It also makes conjures images of horses and has classic elements. USA

  • Five years in the making, wow. I don’t have any relationship with horses, so I’m curious what images this will evoke in me. I would love to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • Despite the rough name, the fragrances sounds delicate and heavenly. I’m very curious about the Lily of the valley and leather combination. Also, I’m very intrigued by the mixing of notes, from fruits, flowers, greens and metal…It is interesting how it contains elements from every category and I think this makes it unique. I would be very delighted to try it.

  • I loved how Elena described in so many details the movements a horse make, I never thought of it that way. I don’t have a favorite Sarah Baker fragrance since I haven’t tried any. I live in the EU ( Romania).

  • What appeals to me most is the fact I love right beside a famous irish race course and thus I’m very familiar with the inspiration behind this and the actual smell of hay so the use and prominence of it in this fragrance has my curiosity piqued!

I adore Sarah’s line, rules of attraction and jungle Jezebel being my favourites.

    I’m from Ireland, eu.

  • Interesting idea behind this scent, loved the description of a horse getting ready to jump and how his body is aligned. Just beautiful! Would love to try! Living in the EU

  • Always something new to learn at CaFleureBon. I enjoyed reading about the meaning of bascule and the details of how a horse prepares for a jump over obstacles. I could almost hear the hoof beats. Thanks Ms Elena. Mich USA

  • I have no experience with horses whatsoever. Neither riding, touching or let alone smelling one. But this review by Elena gave a sense of familiarity and comfort and a description of something pure, yet animalic, that I would love to experience. I have never tried Sarah Baker frags before. I am in the EU. Many thanks.

Appreciate the review and the opportunity for the giveaway! What really intrigues me are the grass, hay, leather and tobacco notes and how I imagine they interplay with the peach accord. I’ve never tried anything from Sarah Baker but I’d like to add this one to my collection. Best from Virginia, USA.

  • I never heard of Baker brand before. It have white tobacco that spice scent like indie scent. Love to try it. Im in Sweden EU

  • Jed Or Alive says:

I never spent much time around horses growing up, but I truly do enjoy these immersive perfume experiences. Elena’s descriptions really set the scene for a very thematic and transportive perfume. I’ve also been discovering a love of hay in perfumes, so this one sounds right up my alley. I haven’t tried anything from Ms. Baker yet, but I would be very excited to start with Bascule! Located in California, USA.

  • I have been to this type of event in South America, where it is called “jineteada”. I can definitely understand the festive feeling this kind of reunion transmits, almost like a party, with its cocktails, colors, grass, food and, of course, the animals fragrances, the barns and the sight of the horsemen with their leader boots and mountings. Excellent review, it transmits exactly what the place evokes. Excellent place to travel to through an aroma. I’ve never tried a fragrance by Sarah Barker, but it is no doubt in my wish list. I love equestrian events and feel the beauty and seemingly effortless grace is so captivating. The description of Bascule in this review makes me long for the days of enjoying the Rolex Three-Day Event in the warm sun. I currently have Tartan by Sarah Baker and have tried a few others via samples. All her fragrances are magnificent. I live in the US!

  • Elena created a vivid imagery of the Hippodrome, bascule the beautiful arc formed by a horse’s muscular and skilled body, and Bascule the perfume. Grass, hay, leather, vetiver, amber, these note create the olfactory image to go with the visual and auditory images of the Hippodrome. Seems to be a nice perfume to create impression of being outside with fresh-cut grass, smell of hay and horses in the air, with one about to see a brilliant show of strength and skill, of both the horses and equestrians alike. Haven’t tried any Sarah Baker perfumes, yet. Enjoyed the review. Thanks for the review and the draw. writing from the USA.

  • I love hay notes so much and they are described so beautifully here! I haven’t tried Sarah Baker before, but have taken classes with Ashley and am familiar with her wonderful accords. I am based in New York 🙂

  • It is a bit sneaky but I’ve tried Bascule already as a sample and think Elena’s review is spot on. It opens with a beautiful grassy green accord that is addictive, but dries down to an addictive animalic hay accord. It is like being at the classy horse races with the bit of dirtiness that belongs to it (as Elena says “even when you strep into a pile of dung”). Wonderful! I have tried Leopard by Ashley Eden Kessler which has a similar addictive animalic aspect. My favourite Sarah Baker is Charade. Marit UK

  • I am fascinated by hay accord – which intrigues me about this perfume. This sounds like a beautiful autumn scent, out with the horses, the smell of hay, grass, citrus. I have never tried this house.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I enjoyed about Elena’s review, was the way she incorporated all the elements that encompass the horse, the rider, and the surroundings – – leather boots, the hay, the vetiver-dominant skin of the horse, etc, all beautifully illustrated to give us the best visual representation of the way it should smell.

I have never experienced Sarah Baker before, but I’m going to change that.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Danny Constantinescu says:

From the inspired choice of its name to the description of the notes, this perfume screams originality and artistry and Elena’s review is vividly descriptive. The way she describes the symbiosis between horse and rider through the notes of the perfume is absolutely fascinating, down to the metal in the horses’ hooves, but it’s the way she describes the hay note that’s most appealing and interesting. I’ve never tried Sarah’s perfumes, even though I always wanted to smell Tartan and Jezebel. I live in London, UK.

  • I haven’t tried any Sarah Baker fragrance before. I really love how Elena related the perfume to equestrian horse jumping. I have a perfume Lalique Pour Homme Equus which also reminds me of horse and hay. Hope I get to win this draw!
    Florida, USA

  • Very intriguing concept behind this lineup
Horses, bitter citruses, vetiver and high leather boots
I have smelled Tartan , and it’s really different . To me it smells woody with lots of bread
    Thanks for the giveaway.
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • This one has some interesting notes going on: leather, balsams and animalic vibes. I would love to give it a try.
    I am in EU. Thanks

  • The atmosphere created by Elena has this grounding effect because is so natural and relaxing. The notes are absolutely incredible for me “grass, peach, bergamot, Lily of the Valley, hay, leather, vetiver, amber, musk, fir, tobacco, metal tack.”
I haven’t tried any Sarah Baker perfume before.

  • As a lover of all things equestrian, Elena’s review reignited my desire to ride and experience all the emotions related to being around one of these magnificently graceful creatures ! Fabulous inspiration for a scent !

Although a city boy i love horse riding. Just a few years back it was a hobby of mine, but now I barely find time to ride , 2-3 times per month at best.
I have a sample of queer one Jezebel . It’s a good one , sweet and sweaty at the same time, and extremely strong. One spray is enough.
    Nice draw

  • I do not know anything from this wonderful lady, but I read and watched many reviews. It would be great if I get to explore this house and start with this particular fragrance.

    Many thanks! Europe

  • I enjoyed the description of this fragrance in relation to the beauty and passion for horses and horse racing. I am curious to see how the drier notes blend with peach. I only had the chance to smell Sarah Baker’s creations once and only briefly, so I’d love to explore them more. I am in the USA.

“scent of fresh hay on a sunny afternoon is soothingly sweet-leaning” is a great memory – one of my childhood friend’s family had a farm with horses, and turning into the main gate to the farm always gave me olfactory overload: cut grass, oats, drying hay bales, leather and saddle soap

what a great review – just reading about the scent does transport my back to riding, hauling hay, washing and drying the horses, cleaning the tack

    nice

  • Woody-boozy and dry i adore , that’s why I bought Tartan , my favorite Sarah Baker fragrance .
The concept of the new line is nice, and the implementation looks good too.
I do also like the fact Sarah Baker is passionate about those fragrances , and it’s not just some business for her.

  • I haven’t tried any scents from this line but, the fact that this one has ties to horses immediately intrigues me. I love a hay note in a scent and the use of vetiver, tobacco and Leather make it sound gorgeous! I would love to try this. I’m in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Elena, great review of S.Baker Bascule. I love the story on this one about horses, the smell of grass and hay, the smell of the horse, the riders leather boots. The whole horseback experience is put into a fragrance. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Sarah Baker. I really would love to try this one. I am from the USA.

  • This review makes me think of a racetrack before a race…more of the time when the horses arrive. The hay, dust, animal smell, and leather especially! I’ve not tried anything from this house before but I’ve heard so much about Sarah Baker from this site. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • statikstepz says:

Hello, please enter me in your giveaway. I live in the United States in Florida. What I really enjoyed most from the review is her description of being at an equestrian event and also the hippodrome… almost as if you were to close your eyes and have someone narrate that part of her review to you, it would put you there and you would feel as if you were there taking in all the sights and more importantly, the smells. I would love to see how this perfumer incorporated the accords/notes of hay, leather, citruses, vetiver, tobacco, and lily of the valley. Definitely seems like this would be a very unique scent that would elevate your senses! I look forward to smelling this one, and hope I win… this fragrance smells amazing!! I have never smelled any fragrances from this company but I hope for that to change!

  • The notes do create a strong contrast – animalic leather, musk and grassy, balsamic notes versus delicate flowers and suculent fruits.
I must say that I am quite curious about this one.

    I am in EU. Thanks!

  • wandering_nose says:

The harmony between the horse and the rider has always been extremely fascinating to me. The preparations for the equestrian shows with the slick clothes, impeccable leather riding shoes and all the pomades used to groom the horses only add to the exclusivity and enjoyment. The way Elena presented the images made me feel like I am there, among the breathless observers of the show, craving to get closer to the riders and the horses to bask in the unique mix of smells. I haven’t tried Sarah Baker’s perfumes before and I would love this one to be the first one I put my nose on. I am in the EU

  • I’m in the US and I’ve never tried this house, but I enjoyed this review & the scent sounds very appealing. While the review drew me in with the description of the grass, hay & leather, the notes list mentions peaches, fir & metal tack and I’d love to give it a try. Thanks for the review & the draw.

  • Vetiver, fresh grass, tobacco, high leather boots ? Alpha is creeping inside on me just by reading the notes

It’s funny because I was just reading the other day about Sarah’s new line of fragrances and was quite intrigued by them all. I love the fact that Miguel and Christian each have composed one of the new fragrances in the line. It is awesome how Sarah herself has come up with two of her own for own line as well, which makes them even more curious for me to smell. Now, Bascule really stuck out to me as my grandfather was huge into horse racing/bets and was at Delaware Park (a horse race track and casino here in Delaware) all the time. In fact, him and my grandmother were so in to horses, my grandmother wound up working at Delaware Park as a bet teller part time towards the end of her life. Needless to say, of the bunch, Bascule really stuck out to me just based on the first few words of the description on Sarah’s site…. Horses, Hay, and Leather. You’ve got my attention! Seeing this one come up here on CaFleureBon is a coincidence and truly appealing to me. However, I did not know until this article that Ashley Eden Kessler has been working on this fragrance since 2015. WOW! That is awesome and has opened my eyes even further then they already were! And yet again, this is why I absolutely adore team CaFleureBon! I have only tried one of Sarah’s fragrances but that will definitely be changing in the near future. I actually have her site pulled up on my computer as I type…. I have a few more samples I need to order. The only one I have sampled thus far is Jungle Jezebel, and let me just say, a stunner! Full bottle worthy for sure! I need to also get my hands on the three from my favorite perfumer, Sarah McCartney, which I believe are Atlante, Lace, and Tartan. Ok, but who are we kidding?!? Sarah Baker has a star studded lineup of perfumers working on her brand and I really need to try them all! Thank you Elena, for your thoughts and beautiful write-up on Bascule. It was a fantastic read and one I will definitely return to! Thank you Sarah, for sharing your creative direction with your phenomenal brand and for your generosity! It is appreciated more than you know! As always, thank you Michelyn, for bringing us this content and always keep us wanting more. You are truly a wonderful person! Sending warm wishes and gratitude from Delaware, US. Good luck all and stay safe friends!

It was fascinating to read about how the scent of vetiver is associated with that of a horse. I would have imagined of a more animalic quality, but this has gotten my attention.

Another interesting point was the emphasis on a Cologne structrure for an EdP. I have often wondered about this, but it seems to be a clash of ideologies. A light EdP sounds oxymoronical, no?

  • Thank you Elena for another illuminating review. This took me back to being startled by a horse walking close by me as I was deep in thought and was still able to appreciate its majesty. Bascule sounds like a musky delight. I’m in USA

  • When i was a kid I had experience bad experience with a horse, long story short I’m afraid of horses, literally. Every time I’m seeing a horse i get cold feet, and i still can’t get over it.
Let’s see if Bascule can help a little bit.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

A grass based scent sounds incredibly attractive, and I love how you weaved the scent into the description of equestrian activities. I have not tried a Sarah Baker perfume before. I’m in the US.
