Verdi prati, selve amene,
perderete la beltà.
Vaghi fior, correnti rivi,
la vaghezza, la bellezza,
presto in voi si cangerà. ~
G.F.Handel’s opera Alcina
“Verdant meadows, pleasant forests, you will lose your beauty. Dreamy blossoms, flowing streams, your charm, your beauty will soon fade (my translation).”

We are ever haunted by the transient natural beauty which surrounds us, although we may take it as our rightful due. In perfumery, as in life – we do well to stop in our tracks to savor and acknowledge such gifts. Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur is one such olfactory illustration.

So many talented perfumers are drawn to their calling via myriad means: some began as dancers, painters, musicians, art historians, designers – even farmers! Artisanal perfumer Manuel Cross of Rogue Perfumery commenced as a chef by trade – his chosen path since 1993 (this particular association is well known to me; I too find the link between gustation and olfaction to be intimate and compelling). His choice of moniker is brilliant: Rogue Perfumery is evocative, naughty and truthful – in that Mr. Cross wearied of the IFRA and EU restrictions which contributed to the attenuation/distortion of venerated classical perfumery. His personal response was to push back, utilizing the highest quality materials he could obtain while composing nouveau-vintage style fragrances which span every genre. I initially encountered the perfumer’s work on Etsy in 2017 (Chypre Siam and Tabac Vert) and purchased several fragrances as a direct result of sampling. When asked what I might like to try, his new Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur appealed based upon its description, and Mr. Cross promptly sent me an inclusive rollerball sample set. I was grateful and extremely pleased.

Vetifleur is a scintillating old-school verdant floral of the finest stripe – a first-rate example of the whole equaling more than the sum of its parts. It  opens unerringly with a luscious burst of bergamot, segued by the classic fragrant triumvirate of indolic jasmine, rose and silvered iris. I’ve come to suspect that many of us have become somewhat jaded – we see this magnificent trio appear and simply take it for granted, forgetting how crucial it is to the success of memorable fragrances such as Chanel No.19, First by Van Cleef and Arpels, 1000 de Patou, Joy de Patou and many others. Vetifleur’s luxe mossy base rich in sandalwood, oakmoss and vetiver harkens back, as homage – to numerous majestic chypres of yore (they are components present in all those I’ve just mentioned); this melange never fails. As for amber tones, reflect back upon 1000 and First: where would they be without them?  Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur shares a DNA profile with these iconic perfumes, but one which further accentuates the lovely sweet, racine booziness inherent in Javanese vetiver, which imparts its pronounced voluptuous mystery, swirled with a whisper of smoke. In such a setting iris and vetiver dazzle – reminiscent of the tango they perform in Chanel No.19.

In spite of the entwining silken threads commonly shared with other grand fragrances, Vetifleur emerges its own creature: sparklingly elegant, timeless and ravishing to wear. Manuel Cross has his eye on the present and future while retaining the caliber of a classic tradition. I can’t recall such quality offered at a more reasonable price point for some time now. Another plus: although classified as eau de toilette, Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur possesses excellent longevity and sillage (as so many of his fragrances do). I would encourage you (if you haven’t already), dear readers, to sample this and other perfumes composed by Mr. Cross; you are certain to find at least one which will please.

Notes: bergamot, Java vetiver, rose, jasmine, iris, oakmoss, amber, sandalwood  Draw closes 8/23/2021

Samples kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • Ida, what a fabulous review of Manuel Cross & Rogue perfumery!!! ❤️ This is spot on: “In spite of the entwining silken threads commonly shared with other grand fragrances, Vetifleur emerges its own creature: sparklingly elegant, timeless and ravishing to wear. Manuel Cross has his eye on the present and future while retaining the caliber of a classic tradition.”

I LOVE Rogue Perfumery & own 8 full bottles (impossible to select a favorite, they are all so gorgeous & accomplished). Vetifleur is classic, elegant, and easily as indispensable as one’s favorite bijoux. I’m so happy that Mr. Cross is abiding by his own standards, using great materials, and creating the kind of nouveau-vintage fragrances that we sorely need in the world today! ❤️ No need for me to enter the draw (and someone else should have the opportunity to experience this glorious fragrance), just a few words of appreciation & thanks! I would not have discovered Rogue Perfumery if not for CaFleureBon! Thank you!

  • Marion Corvi Low says:

Mr Cross’ love for vintage perfume (regardless of IFRA rules) sends my heart beating a tad faster. A deep green mossy classic will never be ignored by someone in the know, who remembers the glory of Chanel #19 and First VCA. With great sillage too! What’s not to desire? After viewing the offerings from Rogue, one must lengthen the “want list” again. I’m in the great state of Arizona USA.

  • Vetifleur has that green chypre vibe which is one of my favorite scent types. I live in the United States. My favorite Rogue Perfumery scent is Chypre Siam. Thank you for the drawing.

  • Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur seems to be another classic perfume, built in the tradition of classic perfumes, as Ida so eloquently describes. I wasn’t aware of vetiver and iris doing their magic in Chanel No. 19. Being a chef requires a good nose, so it’s not surprising that Manuel Cross brings his olfactory sensibilities to perfumery. Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur seems lovely and I would love to try it. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • The presentation of the fragrance and stories behind it really appeal to me. I think Scintillating Verdant Floral is my favorite. I live in Poland, EU.

  • rachel wiener says:

I love that Rogue gives the finger to IFRA and that Cross pays homage to the classics while injecting his own creative juice into his perfumes. I also deeply appreciate the price point as not all of us can afford big collections. Ida does a great job describing the integrity of this house and how the notes of this perfume are woven together. I’ve only sampled Chypre Siam and Jasmine Antique and both are brilliant though I think I favor Jasmin Antique. I’m excited to try more of Rogue. Thank your for this great review and draw.
    I’m in Brooklyn, USA.

  • I love the idea of a long living scent that also have good spillage. This scent sounds easy to wear and delightful. In maryland.

  • Francesca Brice says:

Throughly inspired by the adventure of this story, peppered with colour and the best of iconic fragrance notes! Love the name: Vetifleur

  • Ah Rogue….is an amazing and oh so wonderful house. I have recently ordered a sample set of all of his fragrances. He is an artist. I appreciate Ida’s comparison to some other well knows fragrances, I have never smelled. I was lucky to sample Vetifleur and I agree with Ida that Vetifleur is elegant and timeless fragrance. I urge everyone to try Rogue fragrance they are amazing. My favorite are Mousse Illuminee, Derviche II and Champs Lunaires. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I am so amazed by Mr. Cross’ masterpieces. I have not sniffed one that I haven’t loved. They make me yearn for the days when all perfumes must have smelled this wonderful before IFRA came and cut them down to shreds of their original premises. Vetifleur sounds like another winner (how could anything along the lines of Chanel No 19 be bad?) and I would be honored to win a bottle. Thank you, US

  • I love the idea of the flow of silvered Iris jasmine and rose. I have great feelings for the Sandalwood and oak-moss. I live in San Francisco. I have Rogue Jasmine Antique

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love Rogue, and knowing the kinship of this scent to the likes of no 19 has my interest piqued! I also love how the floral green chypre overall accord is anchored by vetiver. Favorites from this line include Chypre Siam and Flora and Fauna. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • This article is my introduction to Rogue Perfumery. Vetifleur sounds very attractive to my liking. A classic timeless yet modern fragrance… I like that. I did check out their website and found there to be great value in what is offered. Fragrances I have a strong interest in are: Derviche (Sweet, Oriental, Ambery, Floral, Resinous), Fougere L’Aube (Fresh, Green, Fougere, Bright), and Tuberose & Moss (Floral Chypre). Thank you Ida for the introduction. US

  • I’ve never tried a creation from Rogue Perfumery. This review makes me want to though. The way Vetifleur is described here implies a great balance of old school and modern. I mean oak moss? Heck yeah. The java vetiver with the florals also sound amazing: “swirled with a whisper of smoke.”

    Chicago, IL

  • Sounds like a green Chypre, which i generally like, but nevertheless don’t have one in my collection yet. I also never tried Rogue-scents before, therefore the perfume appeals in more then one way to me.
    Living in the EU.

  • joshuabrian says:

Manuel is a super talented perfumer and Rogue has some really amazing stuff. This scent sounds really nice and versatile. I’d love to check it and more out from the house! From USA.

  • Sounds like yet another beautiful composition where classic perfume heritage in a contemporary interpretation. I truly enjoy all Rogue perfumes that I have tried so far (Bon Monsieur, Mousse Illuminee, Tabac Vert and Chypre Siam) and really look forward to get to try Vetifleur as well. I am based in Sweden/EU.

  • emorandeira says:

Ida’s review is great as always! I like how she describes the perfume, how she compare It with other Well known fragrances and speaks about the vintage vibe that this perfume has. I like also to know the compositions of the perfume: vetiver, oakmoss… It has to be as a Green floral paradise!!
I have not tried many Rogue perfumery fragrances but the one that I liked the most is champs lunares, a great fresh and bit tropical tuberoses perfume, with very high quality and good performance.
My name is Edgar (parfum_sindromico) and comment from Tenerife un Spain (EU).
    REGARDS!!!!

  • Lovely review, Ida. Sounds magnificent, an homage to golden chypres and like a trip back in time. Haven’t tried any of Rogues fragrances but would love to. Thank you for offering this draw and this beautifully written post. Writing from Amsterdam, The Netherlands

  • “I can’t recall such quality offered at a more reasonable price point for some time now”. I don’t have a favorite Rogue. US

  • Born from the love of iconic perfumes but having its own character strikes a chord with me. Ida’s description of how the notes blend together is vivid. Too vivid I would say! I have to order the sample set to experience all the perfumes of Manuel Cross. Thank you for this draw. Greetings from Athens-greece.

  • From Ida’s review, Vetifleur seems like an instant classic. Something to wear to the symphony. It sounds amazing. I live in the USA. i haven’t tried any of Rogue Perfumery’s offerings, but I suspect that Mousse Illuminee would be my favorite. Thanks!

  • Vetiver based fragrances are a favorite of mine! Seeing that this also contains Jasmine, Iris and Sandalwood, which are also favorite notes of mine make me desire it intensely. Something that really stood out to me was that this perfume is and EDT. A bit surprising, since most perfumes coming out these days are EDP. I would love to have an opportunity to try out this chypre fragrance. I have not had the opportunity to get my nose on the Rogue scents but a discovery set is surly in my future. Unfortunately, I live a long distance from a perfumery, in Utah , so I must obtain discovery sets before purchasing a full bottle. Thank you so much for the opportunity.

  • My favorite classic perfumes have a sparkling green quality. So, Vetifleur sounds like something I would love. I have a small sampler set from Rogue and while they are all very good, Champs Lunaire and Derviche are at the top. TX, US.

  • Great review! I enjoyed Ida’s exploration of the notes in this scent. I didn’t realize jasmine, rose, and iris was such a classic “magnificent trio.” This makes me want to wear Vetifleur more, to better familiarize myself with this trio.

I am a HUGE fan of Rogue Perfumery. It is probably my favorite house, in fact. I own a sample of every one of his scents that is still in production, including Vetifleur. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite, because it seems to change by the week, but Mousse Illuminee is probably the frontrunner. A modern classic.
    Cheers from NC, USA.

  • Vetifleur promises to follow the same principles of the great chypres which made history. The opening with the bergamot, followed by the flowers and then a base of oakmoss and vetiver is classical in the best possible way, whereas the amber and smoke, I’m sure, offer a surprising twist.
I have unfortunately not only not tried, but not even heard or Rogue perfumery before!
    I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • Kim Alexander says:

Reading the notes of bergamot and jasmine, sandalwood and vet over, I think this may be a fragrance I would truly enjoy. I also love that it is meant to be affordable but smell expensive.

I’m located in St. Louis, MO and I haven’t had the chance to try any Rogue perfumes but I will have to take a look at their website.

  • Claumarchini says:

I am not familiar with Rogue perfumes so thank you very much Ida for this excellent review! I would love to try some of Mr Cross fragrances, given the duality and the existence in them of both a vintage side with a more modern one. Vetifleur is especially appealing to me, as I love green floral and Chanel n. 19,so I am sure I would appreciate it immensely. Greetings from Italy.

  • WeAreScentient says:

You had me at indolic jasmine, rose and silvered iris. I’m a fan of his work, love the vintage inspired creations he does, I think Flora & Fauna is my favourite, but its a hard choice. Bon Monsieur is also a beaut!.
    I’m in Ireland

  • It’s so great to see a new release from Rogue and to see it reviewed here! I also purchased my first fragrances from this house when he only sold on Etsy and I’ve been singing his praises ever since! This is one of my top ten Indie houses. He creates unique, fantastic fragrances at a completely reasonable price point. I can’t wait to try this one. My favorite from him is Chypre Siam.

  • I purchased a sample set from Rogue Perfumery based on the last review on CaFleureBon! Manuel Cross has a talent for making complex fragrances that feel vintage but play to modern sensibilities. Vetifleur sounds like an ode to chypre
(which Rogue Perfumery handles so well). The classic florals; jasmine, iris and rose ground the fragrance in elegance and femininity. Vetifleur was not in the sample pack I received. I liked so many from the set with Champs Lunaires being a standout. I’m in MD, USA.

  • The oulaw perfumer is incredibly appealing. But vetiver and bergamot are favorites, so I’d love this. I went and read about his other fragrances (haven’t tried any) and need to find them! NC USA

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Ida’s review of Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur is this fragrance being based classic chypre style with vintage vibes and styling. Ida describes it beautifully and it sounds like the boozy javanese vetiver that I love. I haven’t tried anything from Rogue Perfumery so I don’t have a favorite. I am from the USA.

  • Fraghead Summy says:

I loved how Ida. highlighted the fact that doesnt matter what, some note combinations never get old , and they have been used in one masterpiece or the other . Chanel no. 19 has already been one of my favorites and it would be really lovely to give this one a try too. I have not used any perfumes from this house yet, but on checking out their website i think i would really love their Fougere L’aube.

  • Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur seem to posess that timeless clasical profile , i’m very curious about it. Thanks for this review and the draw, from EU!

  • Susanna Augustsson says:

I’m so excited over this new perfume from Rogue Perfumery. Jasmin and iris are my definitely favorites. I can imagine that bergamot gives bit of spiritual smokiness and rose old lux.
I’m a big fan of the house and tried almost all of his perfumes. I personally own Mousse Illuminee and Flos Mortis and above those have several samples. It would be so much fun to add Vetifleur to my collection!

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

always those who walk their own line and refuse to be confined, pique my interest. Ida, as ever has written prose into perfume. Vertifleur seems to possess a vintage pedigree yet with a refined modern twist. I would be thrilled to experience. I live in SW France.

  • Elegant, timeless, classic. That sounds great and up my alley. Even though I haven’t yet florals haven’t really found their way into my nose I’d really want to try. Maybe I get lucky with this draw. I live in Germany.

  • I am interested in Vetifleur, because, as Ida suggests, “Manuel Cross has his eye on the present and future while retaining the caliber of a classic tradition”. I know this will be a succes in my notebook, after releases like Jasmin Antique and Flos Mortis.

Thank you for the chance, especially because I live in EU and Rogue perfumes are pretty (or almost impossible) to find here.

  • Another fabulous review by Ida.
I have heard so many great things about Rogue and would love to be entered to win vetifleur
    USA here

  • Bergamot, my favorite…indolic Jasmine, rose, iris sandalwood are always very appealing to me!! EDT with longevity & sillage thanks for the review Ida!! Ohio born & no I haven’t had any rogue perfume, but eventually will add toy list Good luck everyone!!!

  • I’ve been wanting to try more from Rouge Perfumery ever since I tried Chypre Siam. The quality of the materials is evident. I love how Manuel is deeply rooted in the classics while providing his own twists. I would love to have this high quality floral vetiver in my showcase.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Great review by Ida, I’m also keen on the scents of yesterday and mr Cross knows how, my favorite is chypre siam.
    Las Vegas nv

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the wonderful review Ida.

I’ve had the pleasure of sampling Mousse Illuminee and Fougere L’Aube from Manuel Cross and both of these are wonderfully green, bright, floral and as you said verdant fragrances.

I hope that Vetifleur joins this list (it seems like it might do so, based on that wonderful trio of jasmine, rose and iris). I love how your review likens this fragrance to the big ones of last year – an ode to Manuel’s style of perfumery.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Jmmcmenamin says:

Honestly, I think the part I like the most is that near the end of the review it was described as timeless. There’s something about a classic scent that is really appealing right now. I do not have a favorite Rogue perfume… might this be it? In Louisiana USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Ida! What appeals to me about Vetifleur is that it is exactly the type of perfume I most want to try from a perfumer who founded and named his house Rogue because he was fed up with IFRA and EU restrictions that distorted and ruined classic perfumery. Out of all the types of fragrances affected by IFRA, there can be no doubt that old school green florals took the hardest hit. Therefore, it is the type I most would love to try by a renegade such as Mr. Cross! Its description as “scintillating” and perfectly indolic, luxe, mossy and rich also entice me greatly.

I adore Rogue perfumery and I would be very hard pressed to pick a favorite. If you insist, I would probably reluctantly pick Jasmine Antique – it’s such a stunningly multifaceted soliflore, made dimensional and vibrant with at least 3 if not 4 or 5 different varieties of jasmine, heady yet regal. I live in the US.

  • wandering_nose says:

Ida describes Vetifleur with such charisma that I would love to smell it here and now. This year has brought me a newfound love for chypres, maybe I have just matured even more to appreciate them more fully. I catch myself craving a good and lasting chypre. Vetifleur sound full of life, energy and sparkling sophistication. I love the notes and applaud the perfumer for making the fragrance last! I am not familiar with Rogue Perfumery creations as of yet. Based in Ireland, EU

  • After having read from this review, I am very interested in trying this fragrance and all of the other releases from this company. I do plan to get a discovery set from them. I like it that Manuel Cross gets around the fragrance regulations so that admirers, like me, of nouveau-vintage style fragrances can have more of what we like. I like many chypres and I like the ingredients in this fragrance; I also like hearing about the iris and vetiver combination. Ida has convinced me that I should try all of their releases. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I adore No. 19 in all its forms. Vertifleur shares traits of No 19, First, and Joy in its formation, and that’s all I needed to hear. Sold! I’ve never had the opportunity to try any of Rogue’s perfumes, but I have read reviews praising each one. Vertifleur will add to the accolades. I’m in the US.

  • Chiara Prete says:

I love the way Manuel Cross play with vintage and modern, I’m very curious to know Vetifleur for blinking to chypre classics. My favourite frag is Mousse Illuminee. I’m in Italy.

  • snowflake15 says:

The comparison to older classics, like Chanel 19 and First Van Clefef and Arpels, makes me want to give this a try. I love an old fashioned perfume. I have not tried Rogue perfumery yet. Usa

  • I would love to try this offering from Rouge Perfumery. I have not had the pleasure to try anything from them yet.

  • NituNicolae says:

I have always loved vetiver, but this is the first perfume i have seen where it is in contrast with jasmine. Great review. Thank you for the giveaway. I live in Romania, EU.

  • What I could smell of Rogue so far was of incredibly high quality. Chypre-Siam and Derviche are in my collection, and now I am very curious how Vetifleur could smell. Thank you for this nice presentation of the fragrance.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Procuring a Rogue Perfumery sample set has been on my to-buy list for some time now. Reading Ida’s review, I may have to elevate it to the top of my list. I’m a relative noob when it comes to fragrances and have been exposed to many designer offerings and a few niche ones. I cannot concieve of the type of quality that is referred to here but I am highly intrigued. Florals have not customarily been my favorite but I do like Vetiver…I’m curious about the interplay here. I appreciate the opportunity of the giveaway. All the best from Virginia, USA!

  • Ah it called to me with that lovely mossy base…I love a classic chypre! It sealed the deal with the iris and vetiver dance. This definitely sounds like something I would be into as I really like alot of those referenced classic chypres, but this sounds like a very modern creation too. I haven’t tried anything from this house before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Love that persons like Mr. Cross who revives classic and old perfumery traditions and working with higher class ingredients!
Flowers, Vetiver and moss – together sounds very interesting!
