Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud Review (Ramon Monegal) 2017+ Sea Change Giveaway

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud review

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud Image by Karl

Life is fraught with danger and challenges and sometimes we feel out of our depth or pushing ambitiously into the unknown.  For me Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud encapsulates the challenges we face and the understanding that we have within us the inner strength to push through and persist in our endeavours until they become our reality.

Scents can transcend time, space and evoke deep feelings.  Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is one of those rare treasures in my collection.  The perfume is inspired by the interesting juxtaposition between oud wood and sea water.  It is a scent of contrasts laying bare the essence of protection versus a daring adventurous nuance.  This duality plays an intrinsic role as we are met with both facing the unknown and being comforted at the same time.  There is such beauty to this perfume.

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud don't touch my ouds

The unexpected is what this fragrance delivers in abundance. There is both a dark undertone and a soothing quality about it, equal in its ability to surprise and provide security. The opening is a journey of new horizons and risks as we are immediately met with a fusion of calone, cistus ladanifer and amberwood.  Whilst the initial experience is a bracing mineral melange reminiscent of a tidal wave of saltwater, deep azure depths and sheer power; this is juxtaposed with a warm leathery accent, and it ebbs and flows between these aspects and there is an airy spacious aspect which allows one to move effortlessly back and forth to enjoy this strange but wonderful encounter to the fullest.  I also pick up on a slight animalic twist to it right from the first spritz.  This is hugely entertaining and sets the scene for an unusual olfactory journey: this may come from ambergris which flows from top to base.

The coexistence of these opposing accords is linked with an incredibly soothing and beautiful rose and jasmine.  The floral touches seem to act like a seamstress weaving together the strength of these protagonists in a multitude of swells. The warm tones float above the depth of the seascape as a smooth piece of driftwood steering this scent across the ocean.  The heart of Ocean Oud is a myriad of warming oud tones, Oud Assam and Oud Padong from Laos settle our journey and bring through a sweet resinous experience as we glide serenely through now lilting lapping waves.

The base of Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is where the story of our unexpected journey reveals itself with ambergris, oakmoss and musk.  The ambergris adds a subtle sweetness, which plays a soft and comforting role here.  Oakmoss is the perfect note to partner with as it is deeply sensual and has a musky amber warmth which acts beautifully with the distinctive ouds.  To enhance this enveloping feeling musk allows us to feel that we are finally steering a safe course to our destination and have braved the elements successfully. These notes blend everything together and seem to bring a clear understanding to the vision of this highly complex masterpiece of a perfume.

This to me is the beauty of this incredible composition.  It really is a magical experience.  Oud wood and Sea water should not mix well.  However, they do, and they do brilliantly.  They present us with the Ying and Yang of polarising components through the genius of Senor Monegal’s immense talent we find in Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud a fragrance that has brought to me a new appreciation of the depth and scope of his perfumery.  Released in 2017, this perfume feels incredibly modern and forward thinking and I wonder if the world is ready for such a sea change.

  • The amazing deatils about the perfume specifically interests me. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Karl says Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is a fragrance of contrasts where we see the airy aspects of ocean collide with the darker aspects of oud. Thanks for the draw. I am in US.

  • Hi Karl! ❤️❤️❤️ Fascinating review! I love marine scents! As you say, what an interesting combination! Saltwater and oud, mineral & animal – Super intriguing! I love jasmine & rose! The base sounds lovely (who doesn’t like ambergris, oakmoss, & musk?). I would love to experience this fragrance! I’ve been wanting to try RM for some time. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! • The use of aquatic notes along with oud is an intriguing combination. Apparently this can be a polarizing fragrance which is what I like to find. I’ve never tried a Ramon Monegal fragrance. Thank you for the generous giveaway and good luck everyone!

  • Oh my. The combination of oud and sea notes sounds like it would be a tug of war but I am extremely interested in how these work together.. I haven’t tried any fragrances from this house yet.

  • Johnmc500 says:

The review interests me in that I have to disagree with the statement that Oud wood and sea water should not go together. As a child I would smell everything. At the beach we would smell shells and the drift wood that washed up.

Maybe it’s not exactly but I expect to be taken back to that time with this fragrance.

  • Ocean Oud sounds wonderful. Karl’s review was really interesting.Marine notes are one of my favorites.I would definitely love to try this Fragrance. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • I am interested by the bold and unusual pairing of saltwater and oud, with surprising floral notes of rose and jasmine. The journey and balance sound amazing! It must have taken much effort to create. I have not tried Ramon Monegal perfume. I am from CA, USA.

  • Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud seems to be full of contrasts, enveloping minerals and light/darkness juxtaposition, that is intriguing . From Romania with love!

  • Senor Monegal’s work is truly exquisite. I have only sampled Soul of Oud from this particular collection which emphasizes more on the ‘hollow’ aspect of oud. Ocean Oud sounds like a true scent of contrast equally as fascinating. Would love to have the chance to try this.

Oudul is a note in perfumery that intrigues me. I’m curious how this oud can be in combination with the other notes in the perfume.

The first thought I had when I started reading the review is The old man and the sea. Thematically not on point but also it is, adventure (struggle), and home, familiar. I am intrigued by combination of notes in this perfume suggesting adventure and comfort at the same time as a person can often be torn between these two desires. I would love to smell how are those united in one experience in a bottle. Ambergris and oak moss are some of my favorite notes, while I’m still looking for an oud fragrance to really love. Haven’t tried this brand before, but this perfume now goes to the top of my test list. Thank you for the review and opportunity to win a bottle. Austria, EU

  • I was interested trying to imagine the contrasts you described- and I have to admit I couldn’t. I guess this must be smelled to be believed! Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

Notes: Calone, Cistus Ladanifer, Amberwood, Oud Assam, Oud Padong Laos, Rose, Jasmine, Ambergris, Oakmoss, Musk. I am intrigued by the especially oud and calone mixture. I have never been let down yet by this house wonderful review by Karl. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Thanks Karl for letting us know one of the perfumes that shape your dearest treasure collection : Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud. It sounds amazing that the scent put side by side oud wood and sea water (that shoudn´t mix well in other hands). The contrast of this duality is the heart of it and it is full of unexpected twists: from the mineral opening (calone, amberwood) with a warm leathery accent. As the sea is present, animalic ambergris play a role from top to base. All linked by the florals rose and jasmine. The heart belongs to a bunch of warming oud tones with its sweet resinous experience. Ramon Monegal is a genius and his collection grows in quality and interest day by day. I love the saffron in Flamenco!! I live in Spain, EU.

  • Ocean Oud sounds extremely complex and unique. So many sides to it! From the fresh, oceanic and mineral calone to the sweetness of roses and jasmine, to the richness of oud and finally, to the elegance of ambergris and oakmoss. I find it difficult to even imagine and even more so to categorize, without smelling it. I would love to understand how can all these seemingly very contrasting notes blend together in what Karl Topham calls “a magical experience”.
    I live in the EU.
I have only smelled Faisa and Ole by R. Monegal and thoroughly enjoyed both.

  • The concept of combining ambergris and oud in the same fragrance is endlessly curious. Oud Wood and sea water is a seemingly odd combination, but perhaps that’s what makes it work!

I have heard about the house but yet to try their perfumes

  • Josh Sentner says:

Sounds like a great fragrance! Oud and sea notes when done right are a classic staple and unique approach to woodsy aquatic. TF Oud Minerale does it quite incredibly but very interested how this one comes across!

  • What i loved about the notes on this one is how an animalic and powdery, leathery fragrance has been balanced by a musky base. I think its a must have for fall.
I would love to try it.

  • Nothing can beat the watery notes with oud lurking in the background. Definitely excited to try this one out,

  • Marine and oud notes together sound super interesting! I love both of these note families but have not yest found them in the same composition. Thank you from the US!

  • Karl says it so aptly that oud wood and sea water should not mix well but they brilliantly do here. That’s what I loved the most about this fragrance, its not any frag but a well crafted fragrance.

Yes, I have several fav’s from this house namely Mon cuir, lovely day (love the black currant on this)

Thanks for the links to other reviews as well, found them equally good and informative. Well done Karl, you have done justice to this masterpiece. Would definitely want to try it out if given a chance.
My favorite currently is their Flamenco ( europe)

  • I love oud perfumes, so I am sure I will love Ocean Oud . It has all the heavy hitter notes. It is intriguing to me how sea water and oud are blended here. In Karl’s review he says this blend is magical in this perfume. So I want to try this perfume. No experience yet with Ramon Monegal perfumes, though have heard so much about them on Cafleurebon. Thanks for the draw and review. From USA.

Thank you for another great interview, Karl.

I really appreciated the connection between marine and oud! I’m also appreciating the connection between oud, mineral, animalic, jasmine, rose, ambergris, oakmoss, and musk. What an intriguing and intoxicating assemblage!

Thank you Karl for this very evocative and poignant review! I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am intrigued by the concept of oud wood and sea water/ ocean notes working together to both comfort and challenge the wearer, with the ambergris flowing from top to base. From Karl’s description I feel Ocean Oud could pull me in easily as all of the notes used are extremely appealing and then Mr Monegal’s genius comes into the mix… Highly curious to try this beauty. My favorite Ramon Monegal fragrance is Mon Patchouly. Thank you for the draw from Dublin, Republic of Ireland, EU

  • I am never more intrigued by a scent then when it includes ambergris. It boggles my mind that someone used this to make beautiful fragrances. What possessed them to experiment with such an ingredient? In maryland.

  • Teresa Cs says:

Karl’s description of how the notes are woven and mated together to make disparate notes into a cohesive whole is very compelling. This sounds like a great sea fragrance. I live in the USA

  • LeeHino21 says:

Wow this fragrance sounds awesome! The way Karl describes the composition as opposites going back and forth against each other while not clashing and acting like a wave powerful yet perfect together is a spectacle one needs to try! I have never tried any Ramon Monegal perfumes but now I am going to have to! I would like to be entered in the give away and cheers from the USA! Great review again Karl!

  • GennyLeigh says:

Great review Karl. Fragrances containing Calone are usually prett tricky for me but I trust Ramon Monegal’s expertise. The addition of the oud brings to mind driftwood on a windswept beach. The ambergris, oakmoss and musk drive home the sea connection. Sounds lovely! MD, USA.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Wow, just wow! Calone, ambergris, oakmoss and musk in this fragrance is just from another world. I love Ramon Monegal and the fragrance this house delivers, being my favorite Flamenco. I am totally interested in the aquatic notes on this fragrances and how they blend to make it so interesting and beautiful.
    Hope to smell it soon.

  • I have never owned an oud fragrance that I could label aquatic let alone fresh. This sounds so intriguing to me and would very much like to get my hands on a bottle. From the US.

  • eaudepittsburgh says:

Great Review Karl – I’d be interested to hear how you would compare this to something like Tom Ford’s Oud Minerale or Imaginary Autbors Every Storm a Serenade. I unique aquatic fragrances are such a divisive vein of parfumerie but this sounds very sublime – also the character that the ambergris sounds magical. Would love to be considered! I live in Pittsburgh, PA and I have never smelled a Ramon Monegal fragrance before … let’s change that!!!

  • I like how Ocean Oud sounds. How ocean, wood and Oud mix really well in this one. Sounds nice and mysterious. Thanks, ca

  • Karl’s review is beyond interesting in the way he describes the different ingredients as if it was poetry. Day/night, wood/sea, ting/yang, as if they need one another to exist, a balance in life, all captured and well blended in this fragrance. Truly wonderful to read such passion in this fragrance and would love to smell this as I reread the review. Currently live in Marina, California.

  • cassandra says:

I have never in my life heard of an aquatic oud based fragrance, this is incredible. Such top notch ingredient to make what I am sure is a mythic scent. Excited for the giveaway. From Romania, EU.

  • You really captured my interest with the contrast of notes. I like the way you describe it as “They present us with the Ying and Yang of polarising components”. I am always a fan of anything with rose in it. I’ve never tried anything from Ramon Monegal so I’d be thrilled to have this be my first in my collection.
    I live in the US.

  • “Oud wood and Sea water should not mix well”. Well, I’m dying to find out how do they actually do in this perfume I’m dying to try.

    I live in Portugal

  • Thanks for the article Karl!

The juxtaposition between oud wood and sea water really caught my interest. I am trying to get a good idea how these notes would work well together, but I think this is something I have to experience for myself. This glaring review of Ocean Oud has made me really excited to try this!

I have tried any of Ramon Monegal’s fragrances yet, but this sounds really interesting and I am really excited to try out some of the fragrances in their catalogue.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Ramon Monegal’s Aghar musk was my first foray into niche parfumerie, I am very intrigued revisiting Ocean Oud now that my nose has changed. Ramon (from Luxembourg).

  • Regis Monkton says:

I haven’t had a chance yet to try anything from this company but I do plan to try their fragrance releases. I’ve heard that this company uses oud often and in a high-quality way. Lately, I’ve been adding some oud-centric fragrances to my collection. I would like to see what the different accords in this are like. I think that this fragrance could help me to have a better understanding of what ambergris is like. I live in the U.S.A.

  • ElenaChiss says:

Beautiful pictures! I am curious about all these notes together – calone, ambergris, the two types of oud, but also of the flowers – rose and jasmine. It really seems to be a different take on your classical marine, woodsy fragrance.

Thank you! I am in the EU

  • As many others have noted, the combination of oceanic notes is quite unique and very captivating. A similar idea in Tom Ford Costa Azzurra where it works to great succes. I am sure Ramon Monegal has a very personal twist on this. I hope it can be my new summer fragrance.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • To tame the oud to be marine with an ambergris note.. is an aromatic miracle. there is no Venn diagram connecting oud and the natural scent of the ocean – they are not natural bedfellows. This makes this a strange and enigmatic scent, full of contradiction and juxtaposition!! Never have I ever smelled anything like it. I’m always obsessed with Oud as a perfect note in cold weather, therefore I’m so interested in smelling Ocean Oud. I absolutely love this and whilst it clearly (from the oud) smells of my signature, it does not compare to anything else in my collection and I am so happy to have this in my life. Greetings from BiH

  • All Ramon Monegal fragrances I’ve tried are provocative, powerful , and almost bohemian.
Karl Topham review made me believe through Ocean Oud I’ll be able to hear the song of the sea , and maybe even Poseidon .
One of my favorite fragrances is Impossible Iris – Ramon Monegal. Modern and cozy fruity-floral.

  • Firstly, I was amazed at Karl’s review, especially the preamble spoke to me on a deeper level. The perfume that encapsulates our inner strength to conquer the upcoming struggles of life!

Secondly, contrasting fragrance notes are tackling my imagination. How does Ocean Oud smell, and develop? How would the dry down smell on my skin? Karl masterfully answered all my questions and made me absolutely excited about the fragrance.
As an oud lover, I loved to read that Ocean Oud consist of many warming tones of two different sources of oud. As an admirer of contrasts, I loved to read how polarizing components can be fused into a new perfection – balanced union.
Ramon Monegal fragrances have been on my radar for a while, but have not had an opportunity to smell them, yet.

Thank you, Karl, for a captivating review, and thank you, Mr. Monegal for your generosity.

I really appreciated the contrasts in the fragrance, along with the fact that the florals seamlessly ties everything together. What I’m looking forward to getting my nose on is the opening, to see if its as bracing as Karl states: “The opening is a journey of new horizons and risks as we are immediately met with a fusion of calone, cistus ladanifer and amberwood. Whilst the initial experience is a bracing mineral melange reminiscent of a tidal wave of saltwater, deep azure depths and sheer power; this is juxtaposed with a warm leathery accent, and it ebbs and flows between these aspects and there is an airy spacious aspect which allows one to move effortlessly back and forth to enjoy this strange but wonderful encounter to the fullest.”

Never had the chance to experience a Ramon Monegal fragrance. But my love is with the ocean. Deeply in love with it. Sea water and oud sounds so bizzare and i can think of some sea water fragrances and oud just seems so out of place there. But after this review, it seems magical. I would love to wear this. Have the beautiful ocean vibes on, but with oud for a punch. Thank you for the opportunity! I live in Romania, EU.

What interests me about Karl’s review of Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is how you get the fresh and light aquatic and floral touches that contrast with the dense and woody facets. It super unique and rare to have this note combination in fragrances and I would love to try it. My favorite Ramon Monegal fragrance is Flamenco. I am from the USA.

    Thanks for the great review.

I absolutely love the use of calone and all the different ouds in this. THis is a scent of dichotomies – open salty air, driftwood, calone and then beautiful florals, with touches of animalic and woody oud.

I haven’t had a chance to smell any fragrance from this house before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • A combination of oud and briney aquatic notes seems very unusual—or even outright unlikely—and I certainly haven’t tried any fragrances that employ that unique approach. This also sounds like a somewhat challenging fragrance; animalic oud, calone, ambergis, and jasmine can all be strong, opinionated notes. But Karl makes a compelling case for the elegance of Monegal’s design. Thank you for the glowing review Karl! I’m adding this one to my to-try list, which would be the first Ramon Monegal fragrance I’ve tried.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

Ramon Monegal build his own brand well i believe, relying on heritage, and own creativity and vision , and Ocean Oud is a nice example of what creativity in perfumery is.
Mysterious marine and oud fragrance, almost magical creation.
