Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca Review + Ibiza Summer Draw

In 2018  the renowned Barcelona perfume house  (Impossible Iris Mon Cuir, Cuirelle), introduced Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca, one of a trio of new perfumes; three magical Eau De Toilettes inspired by the Balearic Island and jet-set playground, Ibiza. Each of them capture a different aspects of a perfect summer’s day on the La Isla Blanca (the white island).

During that pristine childhood,

Scent came before language.

And stories would become smells,

Illustrious but brief discussions of wordless perfumed magic.” -Ramon Monegal

The first in the series, Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca was a joy for me to review for one very singular reason; the island of Ibiza relates directly into my own personal childhood narrative, and the thoughts and scent memories brought forth true tears of joy. My family had a deep abiding love for the Balearic islands, starting with a summer spent on Mallorca in 1959, followed in 1960 by the first of many idyllic summers spent on Ibiza.  How my parents discovered Ibiza in those pre-internet days was never explained to me. Every June we would pack up our lives in San Francisco, and travel to Europe with tents and sleeping bags in tow. Upon arrival there was usually an automobile waiting, usually a VW Bus which would carry us intrepid campers across the EU to Barcelona where we would board an overnight steamer, arriving on La Isla Blanca early the next morning. To this day I still pronounce Ibiza in the “Ibicinco/Castilian” manner (eh-BEÉ-thuh) with that beautiful soft lisp that still designates Catalan Spanish.

The sights, sounds, and scents of those magical summers remain fresh and vivid in my mind’s eye to this day 60 years on. The blinding white of the houses, the electric blue of the endless sky and sea. The smell of diesel fuel (mixed with the tang of salt air) from the small boats that took us almost daily to secluded beaches; more often than not Cala Bassa or our beloved Port d’es Torrents. The Ibicinco beaches in the early ‘60’s were totally undeveloped but for a single palm frond roofed shed which sold fresh grilled fish for 5 pesetas, and a delicious bottled chocolate, evaporated milk, and soda drink that I have never tasted since. The scent of the hot sand, warm sea, and surrounding scrubby hills; sage-like dusty, and shot through with perfumed Spanish suntan oil still haunt me.

Arriving back at our rented villa at sunset and smelling the mineral scent of the white plaster walls covered in bougainvillea where we would eat our Sunday Paella dinner.  The wisps of my mothers perfume, (always Maja by Myrurgia for summer evenings), as my parents prepared for nights at a café/bar with other ex-pats in nearby San Antonio Abad. Very heady stuff for a six year old, yet those memories are some of my clearest. Life felt still and slow and summers would last forever.

Spraying the bottle of Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca is akin to throwing open a Pandora’s box of those childhood dreams. Miraculous and intoxicating, with many notes that jog my memory but contemporized to reflect the Ibiza of now, still beautiful and rugged but with a frenetic nightlife scene and a certain Boho-chic that attracts party-goers and sun-worshipers from around the globe. Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca is a party in a bottle; cascading white flowers climbing the ancient walls of the hilltop fortress in Ibiza Old Town, the almond trees in bloom licked by the salty and ozonic Mediterranean air. The vanilla vibe of pure tanning oil on bronzed skin, mixed with languid wisps of patchouli and musk, reminding us to slow down, stay young (or young at heart), have fun, make love, and live in the moment of the sun-drenched summer.

Notes: Anise, Ozonic Aldehydes, Ginger, Almond blossoms, White Jasmine, Salty Heliotrope, Tonka bean, White Musk, Patchouli

Disclosure: Thanks so much to Europerfumes for a tester. The opinions are my own.

  • This fragrance sounds out of this world! Just this morning I was talking about how wonderful the honeysuckle smells in our yard, and I count that as a white flower, so La Isla Blanca sounds terrific to me. I live in Connecticut, and thank you for the chance to win this prize.

  • Beautiful review. Very vivid portrait. This sounds right up my alley. Thank you for the draw! NY- US.

Robert says La Isla Blanca reminds him of his trip to Ibiza and his sensory experiences are still fresh after more than 60 years of the trip. My favorite from Ramon Monegal is Cuir. I am in US.

Unfortunately Ibiza beaches nowadays has NOTHING to do with this beautiful description.
La Isla Blanca sounds wonderful-sweet floral goodness is what I imagine.
I happen to have one Ramon Monegal bottle called Bravo. Got it 99% full from a neighbor for $80. What a steal. Unwanted gift – that’s why was so cheap. Smells like a hookah to me. A gem no doubt.
    Appreciate the giveaway campaign

Oh gosh, I need an escape to an island right now, and if the only way to get it is in a bottle I’ll take it! Please enter me in the draw and thanks for the opportunity.

  • I love how family vacations were part of the inspiration for this perfume. Salty heliotrope sounds like a very unique note and I would love to see how it plays with the ozonic notes, anise, and warmer base notes. Thank you for the opportunity and I live in the USA.

  • If those familiar notes were enough to make the editor cry, it must truly be a true recreation of Ibiza’s scent portfolio. This creation sounds like it holds true to one of the key principles of perfumery: evoking emotion. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • “Salty” heliotrope and anise?!? I’m interested in sniffing this one! Definitely going on my wish list! The pictures are precious. ♤☆♤ Mich USA

Ohh this review was so beautifully written, it makes me nostalgic for a part of Spain I have never even visited and longing for summers in Provençe, which is the closest equivalent I have. Robert, I would love to hear more expat stories from you, you are an incredibly engaging writer working with fascinating material! The almond trees, salty air, and vanilla-y tanning oil on hot skin are intoxicating even to read about, and I’m sure even more so to smell. I’ve never had the chance to try a Ramon Monegal perfume before, and would love for tantalizing La Isla Blanca to be my first! I am in the US 🙂

How wonderful to be able to capture the essence of a place and lifestyle. That is certainly what this fragrance seems to be about and we have Robert’s glorious review to make that happen for us. I would love to try this and hope I’m lucky enough to win. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • Was a lovely review, and I love how Robert incorporated his memories of his families summers in Ibizia, this fragrance sounds beautiful, I hope I will one day have my own memories of summers in Ibizia or at least or summer! I live in the USA.

I want to open the Pandora’s Box that is La Isla Blanca. I have not tried a Ramon Monegal fragrance, yet. USA.

  • I enjoyed reading about Roberts childhood and his family vacations to Europe especially Ibiza. I also loved this…”Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca is a party in a bottle…” it just sums it all up.
I don’t have any favorites because this is new to me.
    I live in California.

  • Sounds like a great summer scent. Would love to try this “party in a bottle”. US

  • I liked very much Robert’s description of this fragrance and i think it could be part of my collection 🙂 I don’t have a favourite from Ramon Monegal since i’ve only tested Flamenco and even if the quality is there, it doesn’t work for my skin. Thanks for the chance.

  • I love how smells can take us back to memories perhaps once lost, or never forgotten and the scent returns you to that moment. lovely! USA

  • Heck of a review! They again, selected the correct person to write it. I really enjoyed reading how Robert related his memories from his childhood with this fragrance. Good old days with no cellphones , expensive hotels , luxury restaurants – i miss those days .
Beautiful pictures with your family .
There’s something really nostalgic in this review , but at the same time it’s nice to see La Isla Blanca clicks with Robert Herrmann in a really nice way.
Never had a chance to smell Ramon Monegal fragrances.
Thank you all for the draw.

  • I am so used to modern day life . I do admit I can hardly live without my cellphone and my laptop. Even though when I going to the beach I only go to undeveloped placed. I don’t like the crowded beaches at all.
Never been to Ibiza , but I’m pretty sure there’s no undeveloped beaches there at all in 2019 , like there were back in the days.
My girlfriend wears Flamenco , and I do like it a lot , but that’s the only Ramon Monegal fragrance that I know.
Thanks Robert and Europerfumes for all of this.

I was not born in the 60’s , so can’t tell what it was back then , but as a 80’s kid growing up in Europe , i do remember well there were a lot of undeveloped , and even some wild beaches.
Some perfumes are able to evoke feelings , memories and emotions. That’s exactly what happened with Robert and La Isla Blanka . It’s good to know he had a loving family , and a fun life growing up.
Party fragrance with floral , sweet and almondy nuances and vanilla – count me in please .
To me the best Ramon Monegal fragrance is called Mon Patchouly. Top quality creamy floriental i only wear on special occasions .
    Thanks for the giveaway.

Thank you Robert for sharing your childhood memories of Ibiza. I can smell it now. I need a fragrance that’s a party in a bottle! Ramon Monegal perfumes are new to me so I don’t have a favorite yet. Thank you for this draw.

  • Thanks for the draw! I’ve never smelled any Ramon Monegal perfumes. What wonderful memories of summers in Ibiza you must have and how fantastic that your parents were able to make that happen for you! What a gift!
    I’m in the US.

  • What a pretty review! “Party in a bottle” was a great quote! I really like the notes. It sounds so dreamy!
    I live in the US.

  • Outstanding review by Robert. What appeals to me of Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca is that it is a fragrance that tells us to stay young at heart and partying is a plus. Thanks for the draw. I live in the CA, USA.

  • I enjoyed your childhood memories, Robert! And this sounds like a beautiful perfume for summer. I love white flowers! Thanks for the review. My favorite Ramon Monegal perfume is the one they did for Neiman Marcus, I think it’s Mariposa?

  • minteacup says:

Oh, I haven’t tried any Ramon Monegal perfumes, but after this review I would really like to. The turn of phrase that captured me was the “almond trees in bloom licked by the salty and ozonic Mediterranean air.” La Isla Blanca isn’t quite in my usual wheelhouse, but that makes it all the more intriguing. I haven’t been to Ibiza or anywhere in the Mediterranean for that matter, so I wonder about what feelings this fragrance would conjure up for me. Right now I’m enjoying. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.

  • Good review i love how scents can transport us back to our childhood memories. Great review and insight into your childhood. I like the connection with the scent of the wild flowers growing in Ibizah with your memories. My favorite of this house is Cuire. Thanks for the draw.

  • Michael Prince says:

Robert’s great review of Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca. It sounds like being in Ibiza on the Mediterranean Coast in a bottle. A summer fragrance with floral notes, almond, salt, vanilla, patchouli, and musk. I don’t have a favorite Ramon Monegal perfume because I haven’t had the opportunity to sample any.

  • Oh, i just loved his memories from childhood regarding Ibiza, and that they traveled with tent and sleeping bags to Europe! I would love to smell this and experience Robert’s memories too. Party in a bottle sounds fantastic. I’m in the us, thank you for the lovely review and draw.

  • tuiu silver says:

Well… I can’t deny it… I wasn’t so sure about what to expect from this fragrance just based on the notes…
    But once I have readed Robert’s review… Oh my… It expanded my mind in a way I couldn’t imagine…
I have a powerful olfactive memory, so the way Robert described the emotions, feeling, nostalgia between his family and Ibiza just made me want to try this beauty ASAP.
I haven’t had the chance to try any fragrance from this house yet, unfortunately…
But I dare to say that this one definitely caught my eyes more then the others… (based on my researchs).
I would like to join this draw please.

  • WaltherP99 says:

I have to say to me the best article for the past month . Fantastic job Robert !
About opening the Pandora box full of childhood memories and dreams , I can say one particular Ramon Monegal fragrance is doing this every time I’m wearing it.
When I was a kid there was a gelateria right next door to our house.
When I was coming home my favorite thing to do was to ask there if I can clean something, or throw the garbage so I can get my favorite combination- 2 scoops of cherry and 1 scoop of strawberry icecream . Each and every time I’m wearing Cherry Musk I’m reminded to those days. That’s exactly how it smells too… to me.
I’m not familiar with this Ibiza line , but the notes I like.
Thank you again Robert, and Europerfumes too.

  • Excellent review by Robert and I really enjoyed his walk down memory lane! The salty heliotrope, anise, musk, and patchouli have me swooning. Robert’s words were so vivid it was like I was there. My favorite part of the review was: “Ramon Monegal La Isla Blanca is a party in a bottle; cascading white flowers climbing the ancient walls of the hilltop fortress in Ibiza Old Town, the almond trees in bloom licked by the salty and ozonic Mediterranean air. The vanilla vibe of pure tanning oil on bronzed skin, mixed with languid wisps of patchouli and musk, reminding us to slow down, stay young (or young at heart), have fun, make love, and live in the moment of the sun-drenched summer.” Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Sounds like a great fragrance. Like to wear this during nice sunny days. Thanks for the giveaway. US

  • I really enjoyed how vivid the scent memory was. I’ve never had the good fortune to smell a Ramon Monegal fragrance but La Isla Vlance sounds wonderful. In the U.S. Thanks.
