Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud Review (Ramon Monegal) + Hall of the Two Sisters Draw

Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud review

Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud by Neringa©️

“I am the garden appearing every morning with adorned

beauty; contemplate my beauty and you will be penetrated

with understanding.

In here is a cupola which by its height becomes lost from sight,

beauty in it appears both concealed and visible…

The bright stars would like to establish themselves firmly in it,

rather than continue wandering about in the vault of the sky…” -Dodds 250; a poem found in the Hall of the Two Sisters in the Alhambra inscribed in Arabic calligraphy.

Alhambra derives from the Arabic الْحَمْرَاء al-Ḥamrāʼ (f.), meaning “the red one”, the complete form of which was الْقَلْعَةُ ٱلْحَمْرَاءُ al-Qalʻat al-Ḥamrāʼ  “the red fortress (qalat)”. The literal translation of Alhambra, “the red (feminine)”, reflects the colour of the red clay of the surroundings of which the fort is made – a testament to Moorish culture in Spain and the skills of Muslim and Jewish artisans, craftsmen, and builders of their era. Moorish poets described it as “a pearl set in emeralds”, an allusion to the colour of its buildings and the woods around them. It is popularly believed that Hall of the Two Sisters with its beauty, intricate delicacy and proportion has enchanted  poets and artists over the centuries.  Spanish perfumer Ramon Monegal perfectly captures the magnificence of Alhambra – one of the most beautiful buildings in the world weaving  scented magic into his Alhambra Oud, the fourth from the Don’t Touch My Ouds line of Extrait de Parfums.

Like all the Don’t Touch My Ouds perfumes,  Ramon Monegal lets the star of the composition, Laotian oud sing with the high pitched crystalline clarity of a soprano; masterfully showcasing it’s unique and captivating facets – the citrus-sugary undertone lacquered with sweet silver needle chai with a faint peppery lime note that prickles your scent buds just enough to give the overall profile a picante, gourmand flavor that doesn’t take away from the airy citrus-lime-green Laos core. Alhambra Oud, redolent with nostalgia for a bygone era and the magnificence of 11th century begins to enchant with a mouthwatering apple; it’s refreshing, effervescent vibe so beautifully realistic – the sweet nectar bursting out with iridescence as the first rays of early morning sunlight illuminate the Court of the Lions, gentle cooling breeze combining lustrous freshness and warmth in a rounded olfactive jewel.

Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud review

Interpretation of the materials used in Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud by Neringa©

Señor Monegal adorns Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud  with filigree-like olfactive strokes. After the opening’s dazzling eruption, the powerful, pearlescent bouquet of heady orange blossom and jasmine gracefully unfold; bountiful blooms releasing dewy droplets of intoxicating nectar that float in the air. From the timid bud caught in the luminous layers of the top notes, to the fully opened bloom casting its bewitching spell of the most exotic, hypnotising fragrance the opening leaves one enveloped within velvety folds of irresistible sweetness. Alhambra Oud’s finale unfolds with infinite grace and seamless transition as alluring darkness and mind-numbing sensuality collapse together in a heady embrace; deeper and more exotic notes weaving its way out of the shadows – a beguiling juxtaposition to the initial nonchalant fruity happiness. Intricate as the walls of Alhambra lavishly decorated with tiles laid in geometric patterns, displaying fine stucco carvings held up by a series of slender columns; Alhambra Oud displays the multifaceted profile of Assam oud – a force of nature with its avalanche of olfactive sensations providing boundless pleasure. The heady curlicues of oud smoke warmth permeating the composition intensifies; birch and ambroxan join hands in a dizzyingly sensual spin, faster and faster and faster; culminating in the masterfully executed crescendo – as breathtaking and majestic as the stalactite dome with its star in the centre and highly ornamented carved stucco in honour of Pythagoras’ well-known theorem.

Alhambra Oud has the glow of candlelight in the dark, simultaneously warm and luminous, emphasizing the depth of the shadows; its bewitching charm lies in impeccable dosage and balance. Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud truly embodies olfactory travel – as majestic and captivating as its inspiration source, with the scent of oud trailing softly through all the perfume stages; Alhambra Oud is a wonderful harmony between density and lightness, sweetness and animalic growl, luscious effervescence and warm sensuality combining influences from both Andalusian and Moorish cultures in one sumptuous blend of fruit, flowers and the mind-altering smoke of the precious oud.

Notes: Top: Oud, Apple, Orange Blossom; Heart: Oud, Rose, Jasmine; Base: Oud, Birch, Ambroxan

I’m in Louisiana, USA and this review sounds sultry and mysterious. Hopefully the scent reflects that… I’m sure it will. I’m not familiar with the perfumer, but am excited to learn more.

Laotian oud and sugary undertones with a pinch of lime seems like an interesting oud gourmandish fragrance. I am curious about this combination.

  • I’ve always wanted to visit southern Spain and this review reminded me why! The scent sounds wonderful as well. I don’t have a favorite Monegal perfume…yet. I live in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • What an amazing review! Neringa expertly blends a fascinating review of the history of Alhambra with a penchant for wordsmithing that makes the review read like poetry. Loved it.

I have yet to try a Ramon Monegal perfume, so unfortunately I don’t have a favorite yet. Maybe this will be it!

    Cheers from NC, USA.

  • Neringa’s review of Alhambra Oud is very enjoyable to read. Beautiful pictures, beautiful description, along with the history and geography of the region. Haven’t tried anything by Ramon Monegal, yet – hopefully, will soon some day. Classic notes in the perfume – I bet it’s a lovely perfume. Thank you so much for the review and draw. I am in the USA.

Hi! My name is Edgar and I live on Tenerife (Spain).
What I like the most of the Neringa’s review is how she makes the relation between the scent and the spanish monument. Reading the review is like visiting the Alhambra wearing the fragrance… I could almost feel It!!
Ramón Monegal is one of my favourite noche brands. My favourite perfume is flamenco, very long lasting and with a great sillage, with his musky and Woody mixture of Raspberries and roses. I like a lot also imposible iris, a very Well blended soapy iris scent, the New paradise, a mossy perfume with a touch of fig, olé, a fruity Woody fragrance, and faïsa, a sweet oud fragrance different to all the oud fragrances that I have tried before.
Congratulations to naringas for this amazing review and to all the çafleurbon team for your great job and for your wonderful giveaways!!
    Cheers!!♥️

  • I do enjoy many from Ramon Monegal, one of which is Kiss My Name. Alhambra Oud sounds very unisexy to me. I like the notes of oud and apple in this fragrance. The poem found in the Hall of the Two Sisters is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Michigan USA

  • Dubaiscents says:

What a perfect choice of scent to review in honor of Eid today. I have tried several of Mr Monegal’s ouds and loved them all. I like the idea of him mixing the Spanish scents with Middle Eastern and adding fresh fruit and florals. I would give this bottle to my husband as a gift for Eid if I were to win. He and I both love the line with Dubai Next to Me bring a favorite as well as Oud on Fire. Thank you for the draw. US

  • patrick_348 says:

I was intrigued by imagining notes of oud and apple combined. Apple is not my favorite note, but I can’t help but think that oud would give it a dimensionality that would be appealing. I like the idea of a certain smokiness balancing the floral notes. I have never tried a Ramon Monegal fragrance, but the descriptions of them are always appealing. I live in North Carolina in the US.

  • Neringa’s enchanting and lush review is certainly captivating! ❤️ The reader gets a wonderful sense of the movement and harmony in this fragrance. Alhambra Oud is a scent I would Love to experience, along with Soul of Oud and Ocean Oud (these have been on my wish list). Thank you to CaFleureBon & Ramon Monegal for this amazing opportunity! I live in the USA.

  • I loved the descriptive term ” the glow of candlelight in the dark ”

It gave an almost three dimensional aspect to the review. I’ve tried the entire line from Ramon monegal and there are so many gems , this being one of them and maybe my favourite from the oud collection.

My favourite is amber del Sur , it’s absolutely divine!

  • Apples, followed by orange blossoms and jasmine erupting in explosion of oud sound wonderful. I always wanted to visit Alhambra and of course someday I will. Until then this olfactory interpretation sounds just right.

  • Alhambra is an entire world of warm exoticism and wonder, Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud may be the same! Thanks for the draw from Romania!

Neringa’s writing is pure poetry and I’ve long been a fan of her “wordsmithery” (see what I did there?, really trying my hardest). Huge fan of her Instagram account too. The way she describes the perfume, what can I say, its beyond enticing and captivating. I live in London, UK, my fave Monegal perfume is Mon Vetiver, a Barcelona exclusive.

  • Sandro Mateush says:

An interesting construction of the composition, Oud lives three different lives in his opening – fresh, floral and woody. According to a wonderful description, the fragrance is very complex and exciting.
    I’m intrigued!
My favorite fragrance from Ramon Monegal is Flamenco.

Great review and thanks for the draw!

  • I live in the US and unfortunately I’ve never tried any of Ramona Monica’s fragrances previously, but the way you describe this one I can’t help but fall in love!

  • I loved Neringa’s almost architectural approach to her review – it was inventive and coherent with the source of inspiration for this perfume, the gorgeous Alhambra.
And also the notes and the fragrance itself echo the beautiful Andalusian spirit – deep, dark and alluring like oud and ambroxan, yet always joyous and (“iberically”) effervescent like orange blossom and jasmine.
    I am in EU.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I’m interested in smelling how the apple mixes with oud. My line fave is Impossible Iris. US

  • Thank you Neringa for the wonderful review. I’ve loved some Middle Western fragrances and Alhambra sounds like it would scratch that itch. My favorite from Ramon Monegal is Umbra but that might change. I’m in USA

  • I love to read Neringa’s review of Alhambra Oud : it is a joy to see how Monegal perfectly captures the magnificence of Alhambra. Let´s not forget that Alhambra is not just a palace but a complex with magnificent gardens, and in the gardens you can imagine the orange blossom, the jasmine, the roses that surround the Oud that the Moorish (the Nasrid dynasty) brought with them creating a nectar that float in the air of Alhambra. Neringa says tha Monegal adorn ths scents with filigree-like olfactive strokes… in Alhambra you see filigree-like works all around, and you understand the great work Monegal has done mixing cultures in one sumptuous blend of fruit, flowers and the smoke of the precious oud. My favorite Monegal perfume is Faisa: in this scent he uses, as in Alhambra Oud, jasmine , rose and oud in a delicious leathery gourmand way. I live in Spain, EU

  • Neringa’s review is uplifting. I want to travel now! But if I can’t, olfactory travel with Alhambra Oud would more than suffice. I haven’t tried any Ramon Monegal scents, so I don’t have a favorite. I am in the US.

  • Loved the combination of history and olfactory experience in this review.

What a beautiful review I love oud and never thought of the green apple combo.
Stunning visuals and I learned a lot about Alhambra which I didn’t know like Muslims and Jewish people worked together to create this beautiful place and that their is Arabic calligraphy.I didn’t know who Moors were and saw they ruled Spain for 700 yrs.
    USA reader from Los Angeles
My favorite Monegal is Cherry musk

  • sephrenia300 says:

Gorgeous review. I loved the imagery and the reminder of the historical context. The Alhambra is a fortress that I’ve long wanted to visit, but I haven’t yet made it to that part of Spain. The culmination of cultures clashing is ever so interesting to me, and a perfume that embodies that juxtaposition sounds divine! And I live in the US.

  • I have several scents with oud, but I have never gotten a scent with oud as the star player. I love the idea of such a pronounced note here. In maryland.

  • Wow!
I feel like I’ve read a novel about a luminous but mysterious and complex character, the lord of Al Hambra palace. His name is Al Hambra Oud of Ramon Monegal dynasty.
This review should be included in a catalogue from Ramon Monegal! I’m sure he’s proud!

Amazing literature, Neringa! This has exceeded by light years the bounds of a typical review that you hear on YouTube. Congratulations!

I would love to win this and to travel to Andalusia while wearing this perfume!
    Regards from Germany!

  • Very informative review, Neringa. I visited the Alhambra years ago and these photos brought back pleasant memories. I’ve tried many oud based fragrances before but I think the combination with apple is a first.Favorite Ramon Monegal fragrance is Impossible Iris. I’m in MD, USA.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Oud plus apple! I’m so intrigued. I love the description of “the glow of candlelight in the dark,” I would be thrilled to try this one. I’m in the USA!

  • Laurentiu says:

I have not tested this particular take on oud from Ramon Monegal, but the others I did test and have oud (Agar Musk, Next To Me) I found very interesting and worked perfectly with my skin chemistry.
    Thanks for the draw! EU

  • ElenaChiss says:

This is an oud overdose! Oud in the top notes, the heart and in the base notes! I am very curious about that note of apple in combination with the oud. That’s a mix you don’t get to see in every perfume!

  • Apple and Oud are a perfect match and I loved the poem. I’ve never experienced a Ramon Monegal fragrance but would love to own this one. USA

  • In February I’ve smelled a few new (to me) Ramon Monegal fragrances , and I have to say Cherry Musk , and Impossible Iris are both impressive. Still I prefer Flamenco, jammy sweet , almost gourmand I own, with over 10 hours of lasting power.
Alhambra Oud is very different to the 3 I’ve mentioned, it’s lustrous , woody , citrus-sugary fragrance , with mouthwatering apple
and spiciness. Related to the magnificence of Alhambra colder weather gem I’d love to win.
Thanks to Neringa Svobutaite , and Ramon Monegal

Neringa’s review really paints an intriguing expression of the fragrance. I am looking forward to experiencing this Alhambra oud fragrance. Thanks Neringa.

  • This review is wonderful and it touches all the senses! I am mostly interested in Assam Oud: “Alhambra Oud displays the multifaceted profile of Assam oud – a force of nature with its avalanche of olfactive sensations providing boundless pleasure..”
Thank you for the review and the giveaway, I am from the EU!

  • WaltherP99 says:

The whole “Don’t Touch My Oud” collection is good, not just Alhambra Oud , the latter is eclectic leather and oud fragrance, with crispy juicy apple and rose. Like Neringa said in the base the fragrance gets a lot sweeter, and it becomes a gourmand.
To me the fragrance is really well composed, and rather easy to wear, I don’t get even traces of “animalic growl” . Both the leather, and the jasmine are not dirty, or animalic…to me of course.
Ocean Oud is the only challenging fragrance from the “Don’t Touch My Oud” collection.
Ramon Monegal is going forward, a lot of their latest offerings i like a lot. Cherry Musk for years was my favorite one from the house, now it’s not even in my top 5. If I have to rate my favorite Ramon Monegal fragrances:
    1. Flamenco
    2. Olé
    3. Faisa/Soul of Oud
    Thanks for the opportunity.

Neringa unfolds the intricate nuances of the composition as they come along, alluring and enchanting, like the amazingly beautiful fort she likens the fragrance to. The complexity of the perfume attracts me with the layers of oud in the top, heart and base so I would be delighted to win Alhambra Oud. Thank you form Ireland, EU

  • carlos_lager says:

Thank you very much for this beautifully written review. I especially loved the poem in the beginning. The notes list sounds really interesting. Havent yet smelled an oud and apple combination. Thank you for the chance to win a bottle.

  • Alhambra Oud to me feels comfy , warm and relaxing .
Apple Brandy , crackling open fireplace, bouquet of roses , burning oud chips, and my husband and I enjoying our time alone , is what I’m thinking right now.
Let’s have a drink please , shots of my favorite $220 per bottle Nikka Single Malt Miyagikyo Apple Brandy , the 47% Wood Finish edition, my treat of course 🙂
To me the best Ramon Monegal fragrance is Mon Patchouly . Small decant is in my possession , top quality creamy floriental , with incense nuances. Performance is awesome.
    Great opportunity, thanks

Thank you for the excellent review Neringa.

This is such a fascinating oud fragrance – apple, orange blossoms and jasmine. I can just imagine the floral fruity strokes that this olfactory brush paints on the nose.
This fragrance is also interesting in its use of both Laotian and Assamese ouds.

I haven’t had the chance to smell anything from this house as yet.

  • I really liked the review and enjoyed this line very much: ‘Alhambra Oud has the glow of candlelight in the dark, simultaneously warm and luminous, emphasizing the depth of the shadows; its bewitching charm lies in impeccable dosage and balance.’

A beautiful review, Neringa, Bravo. Words to conjure the scent and sights of a very special place, a place of a confluence of cultures, richly held and appreciated history. Alhambra Oud speaks of the intricate details embroidered upon this magnificent palace, their hidden meanings and cultural significance. It reflects a place untouched by time and in that sense opens my treasure trove of memories in that beautiful building, a true opening and invitation to voyage. I live in Sw France

Green apple , oud, birch, rose and juicy sweetness i believe will make Alhambra Oud truly unique, I don’t believe I’ve smelled such fragrance before.

Cherry Musk is my favorite Ramon Monegal . Compliments are important to me, and if you’re like me, Cherry Musk will get you noticed , smelling amazing of course.

  • Alhambra Oud is provocative, powerful and almost bohemian. Burnt wood chips , aromatic smoke, rose petals, birch and mouthwatering juicy green apple sweetness. Fragrance that warms you from inside.
It was also delightful leaning about how glorious Alhambra is , and the Moorish culture in Spain .
Alhambra is in my wish list to visit, and Alhambra Oud in my wish list for smelling , all thanks to Neringa.
One of my favorite fragrances is Impossible Iris – Ramon Monegal. Modern sweet fruity-floral .

  • I still haven’t tried any releases yet from Ramon Monegal and Neringa’s review gives me a better understanding of what fragrances from this house are like. I know that oud is one of the main ingredients used in perfumery these days and I can also gather that Ramon Monegal uses oud in a lot of their releases. I still haven’t tried many oud-centric, or oud-prominent, fragrances and I think that this fragrance would be a good way to familiarize myself with oud. According to Neringa, this fragrance uses Laotian oud and Assam oud, and there seems to be a lot more to it than it just being an oud fragrance. I’d love to try it. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Amanda32828 says:

Lovely review. Truly love the notes description and the images presented. Currently I do not own any Ramon Monegal fragrances but I truly will love to have one in my collection. Commenting from Orlando,Fl.

  • I did not test anything from this house, but I do notice that they are a constant presence here on CaFleureBon and I think that the editors would not review these fragrances if they were not anything but great!
Alhambra Oud strikes me as a sensual take on oud, perfect for the summer evenings spent together with your special one.

Thank you for this draw! Europe

The perfume seems very distinctive oud, sounds so smooth and mellow. I am really interested to try it, I wounded how apple pairs in this whole composition. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA, and I really enjoyed the review, which was well-worded, especially: “From the timid bud caught in the luminous layers of the top notes, to the fully opened bloom casting its bewitching spell of the most exotic, hypnotising fragrance the opening leaves one enveloped within velvety folds of irresistible sweetness.” Senor Monegal, I look forward to being hypnotized.

I have never tried a Monegal fragrance before, but have been wanting to get my nose on Flamenco.

  • I haven’t smelled a Roman Monegal fragrance before but I always stop when I see a picture of one because the bottles capture my attention. I loved reading about the Hall of Two Sisters and the beautiful pictures. The description of Alhambra Oud sounds like a beautiful blend of fruits, florals with an embrace of warm oud. Just lovely. In the USA.

  • Exploring this blend of Andalusia and the Moorish culture would be intriguing, and the Alhambra breathtaking. NC USA

I enjoyed very much reading this review, that combines my relatively new passion for fragtances with my old passion for travels. I love the south of Spain but have never been to Granada, and this review made me dream of being seated in one of the fortress’ patios, eating dates and sniffing what seems to be a complex and amazingly constructed scent. Oud is still a difficult note for me, it can be overwhelming, and I would be very curious to experience Mr Monegal’s talent in using oud and make it waltz with all the other notes throughout the whole pyramid! Greetings from Italy

  • Neringa Svobutaite take on Alhambra Oud , and history lessons reminded me of making, and eating the traditional for the region Tarta De Manzana , the spanish Apple Tart , while someone is burning oud chips right next to me. I almost felt walking in the streets of Alhambra complex, enjoying the remnants of the Moorish culture.
I happen to have one Ramon Monegal bottle called Bravo. Smells like expensive hookah to me , I love it.
