Puredistance Rubikona Review (Cécile Zarokian) 2020 + Glowing Ruby Draw

The enduring allure of rubies undoubtedly springs from their (ideally) red color – a color that represents blood, vitality, energy, passion. Rubies have been cherished and worn for centuries as symbols of power, nobility, social rank or eternal love, perhaps eliciting more emotion than any other gemstone; on a less apparent level, these precious gems have been used as talismans against evil spirits, even as medicine against ailments of all sorts. From the scepters of Emperors to the crowns of Kings and Queens, from the breastplates of High Priests to the shields of warriors, and from the precious jewelry adorning cinema stars to the magical “ruby” slippers on Dorothy’s feet in the 1939 film adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz”, rubies have asserted their impressive presence in history, art and pop culture.

Translating into scent not just the color red, but also the timeless appeal and emotional power of rubies, was a mission that the Perfume House of Puredistance, and its founder/creative director Jan Ewoud Vos, undertook with great care. The fragrance’s chosen name – “Rubikona” – possesses a multi-layered dynamic: at first, it brings to mind the river Rubicon which Julius Caesar crossed in 49BC, thus igniting the Great Roman Civil War. Furthermore, “Rubikona” appears to merge together “Ruby” and “Icon”, like two mineral components co-existing in the same gemstone. Never one to rush things, Mr. Vos allowed his evocative notion to mature, evolve. The detailed timeline of the fragrance’s creation, that he so graciously shared with me, is most intriguing. As early as in May 2017, Mr. Vos invited perfumer Cécile Zarokian (who had previously signed Puredistance Sheiduna) to compose a second perfume for the brand. As Mme Zarokian told me, she was thrilled, since their previous collaboration had been “smooth, engaging, and gave birth to a close relationship based on solid trust”. Mr. Vos handed her for inspiration a reworked version of “Our Lady of Vladimir”, the celebrated 12th-century Byzantine icon of Virgin Mary and the Divine Child.

In August 2018, Mme Zarokian was asked to start working on the composition. However, a few weeks later, Mr. Vos would have an unexpected epiphany that changed his creative course. While watching the 2014 film “The Equalizer”, he saw a scene that startled him: a religious icon, hanging on the wall of a vicious gangster’s office, is splattered by blood after the latter is shot to death. That icon was none other than a copy of “Our Lady of Vladimir”. Perceiving it as a sign, he decided to abandon the initial concept involving this holy icon. In October 2018, Mr. Vos handed a new brief to Mme Zarokian: Puredistance Rubikona would be a deeply warming perfume with the message “Chic Inside Out”, visualised by a vibrant red ruby. By the end of 2018, Cécile Zarokian had proposed three different scent options; Jan Ewoud Vos and the Puredistance team took all the time they needed to turn their instinctual preference into certainty, ultimately choosing the very first version in November 2019. Eleven months later, Puredistance Rubikona is finally being presented to the world…

In Puredistance Rubikona, the desired ruby-red ambiance is achieved in a somewhat unexpected manner (without the use of berry/fruity notes or dominant, lipsticky rose). The perennial flower is of course present; still, it’s the warmth emanating from every strategically placed note, and the interaction between them all, that conveys that glowing-red radiance. Even more catalytic than the rose is Rubikona’s patchouli: omnipresent and multifaceted. Perfumer Cécile Zarokian confirmed my thoughts: Rubikona is a warm, enveloping floral bouquet of iris, ylang-ylang and rose. I used orris butter in order to translate elegance in a smart and subtle way: the fragrance had to be “sophisticated, chic, refined and stylish”. Rubikona also had to be very, deeply red – not in a figurative way, representing for instance a “red rose” red, but expressing intensity. I chose different kinds of patchouli to translate this intensely red color.”

Generous and extroverted, Puredistance Rubikona bares its soul from the moment it touches my skin: a moist, fertile patchouli, infused with nectarous grapefruit, mandarin and bergamot, makes for a surprising, fascinating opening. A slightly metallic – yet unmistakably red – rose blooms, ready to receive the aromatic gifts of the other floral notes: the intrinsic sophistication of the iris, the carnal brightness of ylang-ylang, the motherly comfort of the orange blossom. At this point, patchouli feels like the impregnated earth from which all these beautiful flowers stem. The fragrance’s spiritual aspect is communicated by the meditative aroma of cedarwood, and a resinous, ambery aura. The delectable creaminess (owed to rich vanilla, fluffy musks and sandalwoody accents) that progressively takes over unveils the patchouli’s chocolatey nuances, leading to a long, pleasurable – crème chantilly-like – drydown. Apart from being a stunning perfume, Puredistance Rubikona is also conceptually successful in reflecting the ruby’s aesthetic, symbolic, spiritual dimensions. Its glowing opulence embellishes the skin like a piece of stunning jewelry, while its warming energy comforts like a loved one’s embrace. Puredistance Rubikona makes me think of an Italian screen goddess like Sophia Loren: a beauty that’s at once earthy and extraordinary, projecting unaffected charm, warmth of spirit and voluptuousness that just can’t be helped.

Notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot, Mandarin; Rose, Iris, Ylang-Ylang, Clove, Orange Blossom, Creamy Notes; Patchouli, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Solar Notes, Musk.

  • My favourite fragrance from Puredistance is M which I also own and wear whenever I want to feel like 1 million bucks.
I am sure my special other would love Rubikona and I would definitely love to smell it on her.
    Thank you!

  • What a dazzling display of words to describe this fragrance! I have found that only in the last few years did I even glance with any interest at a Ruby stone. Perhaps it is maturity, I am not sure. This perfume sounds so phenomenal. Patchouli is my favorite note and I always look forward to analyzing it in a fragrance. Despina’s review is beautiful and absolutely humming with barely restrained passion. Very fitting in describing the ruby. I definitely want to try this fragrance. I know that Puredistance does everything with excellence! Thank you for this opportunity!

  • This looks and sounds simply amazing, one of the most intriguing release this year. Everything i’ve tested from this house was good or great , the quality is obvious. I don’t have a single favourite number one, but i can write down three of them, on the same place: sheiduna, black and M. Thanks for the draw, i’m in the EU.

  • (First, I apologize if this is a multiple post. My computer is really being disagreeable )

  • Stunning visuals and it was so interesting how Mr Vos was dissuaded to create a perfume with religious overtones after seeing the Equalizer. I love that patchouli is so prominent yet Rubikona smells so rich like rubies. Good job Despina Veneti. My favorite Puredistance is Gold, but I want to sample more from the house

Despina Veneti’s review got me daydreaming on the outfit I’d love to wear paired with Rubikona. I’ve only smelled Aenos and Black and they instantly became top fragrances on my wishlist as they surpass by quality many fragrances I own. Incredible well made, Black is my to go perfume for a perfect evening out. I’d love to try out Puredistance’s very own interpretation of red. Thanks for the opportunity! EU, Romania

  • Love the parallel drawn to color red! represents blood, vitality, energy, passion. I also enjoy Cecile Zarokian’s work so was excited to learn more about the perfume here. Iris, rose, ylang ylang plus spices like cloves add to the intrigue. Based in the US

  • vickalicious says:

I enjoyed reading about the inspiration for this fragrance, and how it took an unexpected turn from the original vision. The notes combination of this one sounds lovely! I’m located in the US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

This sounds like a beautiful scent that uses classic structure and notes, and I’m sure with Cecile Zarokian’s hand it will feel classy and contemporary. I love the idea that the patchouli smells at times like the “fertile soil” that the flowers emerge from. I like Puredistance’s slow but steady approach to releases, and I think I’ve found almost all of them to be wonderful. My favorites are M, Black, White, I, and Antonio. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • The bottle looks great and the description sounds wonderful. From what I know about this house, this must be another beast mode yet smooth and elegant powerhouse. Rose and patchouli, two of my favorite notes and an all time classic combo. Definitely need to get my nose on Puredistance’s creation of this combo! My favorite fragrances from Puredistance for now are Black and Aenotus, black is such a deep profound elegant incense scent, and aenotus is probably the deepest citrus scent that I’ve ever smelled. Patchouli was also used in both of these two fragrances. Really want to see more from the house!
Thank you for the opportunity of the giveaway, I live in France, EU.

  • I have not had a chance to tried all of the Puredistance perfumes, but those which I tried are all real masterpieces. My favorites are 1, Antonia and White. Those are all fabulous perfumes, and I think that Rubikona is totally fits among her wonderful mates. 🙂
Thank you very much for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I have not tired any Puredistance fragrance so I do not have a favorite. I liked this description of Ida’s “Generous and extroverted, Puredistance Rubikona bares its soul from the moment it touches my skin: a moist, fertile patchouli, infused with nectarous grapefruit, mandarin and bergamot, makes for a surprising, fascinating opening. • Cecile Zarokian and a nice red bottle. Need I say more?

I have never tried any Puredistance perfumes, but I love Cecile Zarokian’s creations.

    Oregon, USA

  • I loved everything about this review: the fragrance description, the wonderful pictures, the highlights on red as a color, the reference to Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers. And what a beautiful name! I like that this is a fragrance that evokes the power of red without including berries or more classic lipstick accords. I haven’t tried any scents from this line, but I am intrigued. I also love that this was created by Cecile Zarokian. I am in the USA.

  • I enjoyed most the descriptions of all that rubies have represented throughout history and all over the world and trying to capture that in a scent. I do not have a favorite Puredistance fragrance for I have not yet tried any and I live in Florida, USA.

  • this one looks like a feminine leaning fragrance although i enjoyed the description and i like the notes.
I haven’t tried anything from puredistance

  • I truly enjoyed reading about the inspiration behind Runikona and how a movie moment changed the composition. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • What a gorgeous bottle and a compelling aesthetic. The juice sounds lovely as well. At first, the notes didn’t really read as “red” to me but Despina convinced me the richness of the rose, patchouli and cedar wood combine to mimic the depth of a ruby. I’ve not tried any Puredistance before. Commenting from the US.

  • The idea of a patchouli with so many facets, including being “moist and fertile” brings such a different idea of what patchouli can be. My favorite from the Pure Distance line is the fresh green floral of Antonia. I live in the US.

  • The aesthetics was the best part of the review. My favorite color is blood red, so those pictures strongly activated my interest. They are just gorgeous. The mention of a dominant patchouli further interests me because it is my favorite note. Love Puredistance M. Fantastic stuff.

Thank for this opportunity. I’m in US.

  • I recently discovered the Puredistance line. I just blind purchased M on a recent sale and I’d be very interested in trying a new addition to this intriguing House.
The intense imagery surrounding this new creation combined with the eclectic collection of notes make this a must try.

  • patrick_348 says:

The list of notes make this sound like a little-bit-of-everything fragrance, but Despina’s review gives a sense of the pleasing unfolding of the scent. I like the idea of the citrus, patchouli and cedar being used to complement the sweetness of the floral notes. I have never tried a Puredistance fragrance, but this one certainly sounds skillfully created. I am in the US, in NC.

  • impromptu1992 says:

Despina does a wonderful job of translating Rubikona for me. It sounds exciting! Like a glowing red ember jewel, or an Italian screen goddess, as she would say. My favorite puredistance perfume is M.
    From Texas with love
    Xoxo

  • I loved the comparison to Sophia Loren: “a beauty that’s at once earthy and extraordinary, projecting unaffected charm, warmth of spirit and voluptuousness that just can’t be helped.” As well as the stunning visuals that accompanied the review. I’ve not tried any Puredistance perfumes so I don’t have a favorite yet. Thank you for the generous draw. I’m in the US.

  • My favorite Puredistance fragrance is Gold! I have a sample of it and I am cherishing it.
Rubikona sounds amazing to me. A warm iris, ylang-ylang and rose scent? Sounds like it will be my favourite scent of the year.
    Florida, USA

  • “Its glowing opulence embellishes the skin like a piece of stunning jewelry, while its warming energy comforts like a loved one’s embrace.”
I’ve read this part several times. I think this is what all perfumes should do. Lately I’ve given up wearing jewelleries and I often fill that empty space with fragrance.
I haven’t tried any Puredistance fragrance till now.
    I live in Romania.

Notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot, Mandarin; Rose, Iris, Ylang-Ylang, Clove, Orange Blossom, Creamy Notes; Patchouli, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Solar Notes, Musk. A beautiful description by Despina intrigued by red colour of rubies and especially the note of Patchouli. This is a house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by the notes and the translation if the colour red. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

I am intrigued by the notes especially patchouli and red rubies and the translation of the colours into notes by master perfumer Cecile Zarokian is mesmerising. This is a house that I have got no experience with I am afraid. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Very charming scent, rose, warm patchouli, red color. I don’t know the Puredistance brand. Very beautifull the parallelism with Loren, the actress who is the symbol of Italian cinema in the world, her temperament, a strong and also sensitive woman. RUBIKONA has already entered my heart.
    Linda, EU

  • OMG! This is a real gem, from the box and bottle design to the composition. Sounds so delicate and elegant, definitely a ruby. And, oh, that passion the red sends…I think it is love at first sight.

  • Iuno feronia says:

Tanks for the draw, I don’t know a perfume of Puredistance yet. Rubikona sounds great, I live i the EU.

  • Gorgeous, evocative review! The notes sound so beautiful.
My favourite Puredistance is Sheiduna, another masterpiece by Cécile Zarokian, who is fast becoming one of my favourite ‘noses’.
I’m in the UK and would love to try this. Thank you for the chance!

  • I loved the story about the creation of the perfume. And great visual material as always!
    I’m in Slovenia, EU.

  • QuentinMathieu says:

This sounds particularly intriguing to me since I don’t have anything that really evokes the colour red in my perfume wardrobe, although I really find this “glamorous red” theme fascinating. I’ve heard only good things about the works of Cecile Zarokian, and I’m really looking forward to trying one of her compositions. I really appreciate the fact that the perfumer didn’t fall into the trap of clichés like red fruits and berries, but instead chose to focus her work on the luxurious and glamorous aspects of the colour red. I’m really excited to smell this one as it would be a great introduction to the brand, which I am not familiar with. From Belgium (EU)

  • I loved how the ‘red’ olfactory composition was juxtaposed against the dazzlingly red visuals full of chic and glamour, which left a striking impression.

Based on what I have tried, my favourite Puredistance fragrances are White and Aenotus. I would love to try out the new Rubikona as well! I live in the UK.

  • Fascinating story about the “Our Lady of Vladimir” that transformed into more dramatic image! Ruby red is my favorite color and red parfums with patchouli are my favorite scents. This line is capturing me: “Apart from being a stunning perfume, Puredistance Rubikona is also conceptually successful in reflecting the ruby’s aesthetic, symbolic, spiritual dimensions. Its glowing opulence embellishes the skin like a piece of stunning jewelry, while its warming energy comforts like a loved one’s embrace.”

I havent tryed all the creations of Puredistance, but so far my favorite is Warszawa.
I live in the EU and would love to participate in this draw.

  • Oh! how I would want any Puredistance fragrance. I don’t know of any, I just know they are dangerous.

  • What a fascinating interpretation. Despina’s description really highlights how different this scent is from other interpretaions, yet how completely appropriate. I have not tried any Puredistance fragrances and I am in Kansas, USA.

  • Wonderful ♡♥♡
I adore Puredistance, the whole house, their ambition, their tradition, their Dna, all of it 🙂
I thank you for your draw, i would love to win this samples.
Mostly liked: Its glowing opulence embellishes the skin like a piece of stunning jewelry, while its warming energy comforts like a loved one’s embrace. Puredistance Rubikona makes me think of an Italian screen goddess like Sophia Loren: a beauty that’s at once earthy and extraordinary, projecting unaffected charm, warmth of spirit and voluptuousness that just can’t be helped.
    Uiii, it sounds amazing 🙂

  • The story, the scene that served as inspiration for this fragrance and the aesthetics of it are all super interesting. Not to forget the name itself! Would love to try a fragrance with such grit.
Never smelled any Puredistance fragrance before.
    I’m in the EU.

  • I dont know any of the Puredistance fragrances but after reading Despina’s beautiful RED review of Rubinkona, I would love to try. All of the roses and red dresses! The notes of this fragrance are my favorite. California

  • Such a beautiful description and so many flowers -rose, iris, ylang-ylang, orange blossom with citruses and patchouli- it is amazing. I guess Rubikone is amazing becouse I know Puredistance perfumes higher-end quality and beautiful perfume-signature of Zarokyan.
    USA

  • This was a great description of how Rubikona evolved and how the lore of ruby is captured in a scent. Enjoyed the story of its creation, the pictures as well as description of the final version of Rubikona. I am sure it is a delightful fragrance. Haven’t tried any Puredistance fragrance, yet. Thanks Despina for the review and Puredistance for the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Thank you Despina for the detailed review. I’ve only tried Aenotus from Puredistance which I find to be quite sexy and is therefore my favorite from the house. I’ve also heard great things about Cecile Zarokian and would love to pay proper tribute to her and rubies by wearing Rubikona 🙂 I’m in USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated the background she gave about the import of rubies to our culture. But nothing, for me at least, can beat the description of a fragrance: “a moist, fertile patchouli, infused with nectarous grapefruit, mandarin and bergamot, makes for a surprising, fascinating opening. A slightly metallic – yet unmistakably red – rose blooms, ready to receive the aromatic gifts of the other floral notes: the intrinsic sophistication of the iris, the carnal brightness of ylang-ylang, the motherly comfort of the orange blossom. I have not yet experienced a Puredistance fragrance.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I love rubies and didn’t know that they were considered a talisman to ward off evil spirits. And what an absolutely gorgeous presentation. That bottle is divine!
I love the notes. Anything with rose in it is a big love for me, but the added note of cloves is awesome. I love spicy rose fragrances.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love that this is signed by Cecile Zarokian, her work is always amazingly beautiful and Puredistance doesn’t put out anything less than majestic. I would love to try this one. I recently tried Gold and fell in love. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • What a lovely revue. I have not sampled any fragrances from Puredistance yet, but am a fan of Cecile Zarokian, and would be thrilled to try this one. I loved the description of the scent journey, with the idea of being enveloped in a warm ruby red, and the comparison to Sophia Loren’s earthy glamour.
    I am in the US.

  • Andreea Florica says:

The presentation is special, bottle, box. The floral scent matching perfect with the color. Red is for strong women. I’am very curious about this.
    Thanks for the draw.

  • Hi.I have really enjoyed the review because aside from amazing notes that this perfume has and the fact that I did not tried Puredistance before, it was very interesting learning about gemstone ruby in general. Also a big fan of amazing Sophia.I live in Italy

  • Such a great review! Thanks.
I love Sophia Loren very much – and I will happy to test perfume which reminds me her beauty, extravaganza and charm. I love Purdistanse M and Black.

I love using nontraditional ways to evoke ruby. I hadn’t thought of patchouli as a “red” fragrance but I definitely can see how it is (color aside). I’ve not tried this house yet but having been dying to as I’ve only heard great things. Everything about this sounds incredible and I loved reading your review. Thanks for the draw from the US.

  • I always love Despina’s references to old films and beautiful collages of in this case lovely actresses in red dresses. I am obsessed with Dorothy’s ruby slippers and Lola’s red boots in Kinky boots.
Rubikona sounds exclusive but draws me in simultaneously the way Despina describes it. I have never tried Puredistance, so no favourites yet. Maybe this time… I’m in the UK

  • wandering_nose says:

I am simply astonished by Despina’s vivid and evocative depiction of the creative process and its final result. Thank you for the review Despina. Golly, this sounds like such as seductive fragrance – reminds me of the old Dior Hypnotic Poison.

I really enjoyed reading about the epiphany that led to the final brief for the fragrance – that was like a plot twist in a movie.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Realmente suena exquisito y cremoso con un toque muy sexy no he probado nada de esta casa, pero si la suerte me acompaña estaría encanta vivo en Barcelona – España

  • This description intrigues me ❤ ” A slightly metallic – yet unmistakably red”. The bottle looks awesome! I don’t have a Puredistance fave frag. Commenting from Romania.

  • Ruby is my birthstone. This sounds fantastic with the patchouli and rose, grapefruit, clove, etc., etc., etc. Can’t wait to try it. Thank you for a great review and many thanks to Puredistnce for making this draw possbile. I’m in the USA
