Puredistance Gold Review (Antoine Lie) 2019 + Golden Visions Draw

Puredistance Gold review

Few natural elements, or colors, have captured human imagination like gold has – or carry such diverse symbolism. On the most apparent level, gold represents wealth, luxury, extravagance, grandeur. Malleable yet durable, gold’s untarnished beauty and timeless appeal are further associated with commitment, compassion, courage, virtue, passion, wisdom, quality and magic, as well as solar energy, divine love and eternity. Gold shines and dazzles, glistens and fascinates – but has no smell; its fantastic ability, however, to generate mental images and emotions fills any concept of a “golden fragrance” with great creative potential.

Following Black and White, the Dutch-based Perfume House of Puredistance has recently released its olfactory interpretation of Gold, completing a trilogy of fragrances that showcase the brand’s signature colors. With his own “Golden Mondriaan” artwork (a palette of different golden shades harmoniously arranged in a well-balanced pattern) as visual stimulus, Puredistance founder and creative director, Jan Ewoud Vos, entrusted the scent’s composition to independent – as of last year – Master Perfumer Antoine Lie of ALOE/Antoine Lie Olfactive Experience. Having already created four Puredistance fragrances (including the aforementioned Black and White), the talented perfumer (known for several exciting, sometimes downright challenging, creations for Houses like État Libre d’Orange, Comme des Garçons and Eris Parfums) proves once more that he can perfectly adapt to any project or style. His Puredistance Gold is a spicy/balsamic oriental of supreme quality and vintage flair, emanating opulence that goes hand-in-hand with immaculate taste.

As someone who’s been working, almost daily, with photos for many years now, I often get immediate flashes of visual associations whenever I smell a perfume. Puredistance Gold’s overwhelming beauty and highly synaesthetic character amplified this effect to the maximum, filling my mind with a wide array of images right after applying it on my skin: its timeless elegance reminded me of a Horst fashion photo of a woman in a fluid white dress, fully accesorized in gold; its intricate structure brought to mind the stunning sculpted jewelry of Alexander Calder; while the luminous, arresting beauty of the composition made me think of the spectacular paintings of Klimt’s “Golden Phase”.

Puredistance Gold review

Puredistance Gold opens like a festive pomander, with clove-studded sweet citruses (bergamot, mandarin) resting on a bed of cinnamon sticks, further spiced up by pink pepper. This spice extravaganza is brilliantly balanced by the grounding herbal character of rosemary, just before the luscious Indian jasmine blooms into the fragrance’s heart: intoxicating, creamy, vibrating with the energy of the spices. The synergy of pink peppercorns and geranium creates an illusion of rosiness, boosting the floral heart, just in time for the emerging cornucopia of balms and resins. Labdanum, styrax, benzoin and myrrh define the composition’s warm, sumptuous oriental character, while Indonesian patchouli and Haitian vetiver enrich the base with their green, aromatic earthiness. Comforting vanilla and tonka bean complete the complex, sensuous amber base, with the finishing touch of animalic castoreum. At 36% parfum concentration, Puredistance Gold has a long, deeply gratifying spicy/resinous drydown reminiscent of the original YSL Opium. The quality of every natural ingredient (all supplied from L’Atelier Français Des Matières) is clearly exceptional, but it’s Monsieur Lie’s masterful handling of them that makes the fragrance truly memorable: considering the plethora of powerful individual notes, Puredistance Gold retains an admirable softness, as well as a distinctive aura of nobility.

Perfumes of Old Hollywood movie stars

Elizabeth Taylor in “Cleopatra” (1963, 20th Century Fox)©, Marilyn Monroe by Gene Kornman (1953, 20th Century Fox)©, Grace Kelly in “To Catch A Thief” (1955, Paramount Studios)©

Profoundly sensuous without being explicitly erotic, Puredistance Gold is a grand oriental with a gentle disposition, glowing energy, and an air of restrained voluptuousness; it takes its time stimulating the senses, caressing and enveloping the wearer with a slow-burning sensuality that aims for deep satisfaction, rather than a quick thrill. Having fully experienced its 14-hour, luxurious cycle on my skin, vivid cinematic memories finally come to mind: Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra entering Rome in her extravagant Golden Phoenix ensemble; the iconic promotional photo of Marilyn Monroe in the body-clinging, curve-hugging golden lamé gown from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”; and Grace Kelly in a magnificent gold ball gown during the climactic ending of Hitchcock’s “To Catch A Thief”…

Notes: Green Mandarin, Bergamot, Pink Peppercorn, Rosemary, Clove Buds; Jasmine, Cistus, Geranium, Cinnamon Bark; Styrax, Benzoin, Myrrh, Patchouli, Vanilla Green Beans, Tonka Bean, Castoreum, Vetiver.

  • The images and the beauty of the review has me dreaming of owning Puredistance Gold.
I didn’t realize that there is a 36 concentration. My favorite Puredistance is M.
    USA

  • Saints this lasts 14 hrs? Wow. Must be pretty good. I love holes and witless like to see if they hit the mark with this one. USA

  • I am fascinated how we all perceive and how perfume moves us. I hoping I will not loose my first wide eyed/ (nose) olfactory optimism being continually dazzled by the gorgeousness of Puredistance exclusive marketing & packaging. I was first in line before they hit the market with theiir Puredistance 1 but I’m afraid as the years have passed I’m not sure the fragrances have quite thrilled me as much as those in the beginning somehow though they have advertised a high parfum percentage they seem to still smell more aroma chemical… maybe I’m just jaded and for the (we’re only going to sell Puredistance 1 because it’s so amazing-days) but there comes the risk when you expand (understandably) in between the stunners a few less so flank them. Gold smells pretty nice on my husband but the “ cornucopia” including soapy herbal geranium & aroma chemicals wear are like Peg Bundy goes to Monte Carlo on me. I don’t know with all the incredible exclusivity, freedom to use whatever essences you want compose with by Master perfumers involved -the fantasy -I expect more. I am the Peg Bundy who really wants to become the beautiful woman at Monte Carlo when I wear Puredistance.
Gold did not have that effect. us. My experience with gold seems to be quite different more gold foil in a craft store mixed with leather handbags and fake still lives of spices geraniums.

Gold smells pretty nice on my husband (he smells like he would be be wearing some sort of bad white pant
suit, questionable gold jewelry (but still hot )wearing $5000 pair of sunglass in an Italian sports car )
but the “cornucopia” including soapy herbal geranium & aroma chemicals wear are like Peg Bundy goes to Monte Carlo on me. All the gold is more like orange gold from being over tanned and too much highlighting. There are sour musky notes that are unpleasant.

Puredistance is really an wonderful Puredistance in my olfactory book – A master perfume)
Gold did not have that effect. I will still be a devoted fan but I’m starting to get a little irritated especially when paying a couple hundred dollars. I’m finding I’m having to try samples where before it was a no brainer to commit to a full size bottle.

  • I am not familiar with the fragrances from this line, but this one inspired by gold seems luxurious and to perfectly match the gorgeous bottle and set. I truly enjoyed reading about the inspiration, including the pictures of Anjelica Houston, Grace Kelly, Liz Taylor, and the amazing art. I am in the USA.

  • From reading Despina’s article, I love the retro quality this beautiful fragrance has. Also the high concentration and quality ingredients Despina describes. Wonderful Gold pictures of old movies. I have never tried and Pure distance fragrances. I would love to USA, California

Like the sound of notes in this and lasting 14 hours is definitely a plus. Liked the descriptions of the images it made you think of. USA

  • Despina’s vivid descriptions make me want to try this fragrance. I have not tried a Puredistance fragrance, but certainly will now. I am in the USA.

  • Antoine Lie is a favorite of mine- I loved the way the images conjured up the experience of this scent- the time frame, the glow, an ode to the warmth creativity brings. Washington State, USA

  • Notes: Green Mandarin, Bergamot, Pink Peppercorn, Rosemary, Clove Buds; Jasmine, Cistus, Geranium, Cinnamon Bark; Styrax, Benzoin, Myrrh, Patchouli, Vanilla Green Beans, Tonka Bean, Castoreum, Vetiver. Intrigued by the plethora of notes and the drydown of Ysl original opium. Thanks from the UK

  • Intrigued by this spicy balsamic blend especially patchouli, cistus, bark, vetiver and styrax. A house I have no experience with. Cheers from UK

  • Thanks for this article, very nice one. I like it this part of Despina’s review :”This spice extravaganza is brilliantly balanced by the grounding herbal character of rosemary, just before the luscious Indian jasmine blooms into the fragrance’s heart: intoxicating, creamy, vibrating with the energy of the spices. • I love spicy orientals and this one sounds pure luxury! I loved the reference to Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra! I don’t know any of Puredistance perfumes.
    I live in Romania, EU.

  • I enjoyed Despina talking about the images the perfume conjured in her mind. Also how long lasting it is and how much it seems to evolve and change. The notes sound wonderful as well and I love that she said it “takes it’s time stimulating the senses” and that it “aims for a deep satisfaction rather than a quick thrill.” Sounds marvelous to me. I have not had the pleasure of trying anything from Puredistance yet. In the U.S. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • Despina’s review caught my atention at Grace Kelly with her gold ball gown, wich for me is the word for elegance. I’ve never tried Puredistance, but Gold has all the ingredients that i love in a perfume. Thank you from EU, Romania

  • How can you not want a perfume when you read that Elizabeth Taylor comes to mind when spraying it?! This oriental beauty makes me so curious about it,Puredistance being one of my favourite brands. As a lover of White,Sheiduna and the gorgeous Opardu i would love to get my hands on Gold. Thank You so much for the amazing draw. Lexa,Romania.

  • I love Mondrian so this definitely piques my interest! And the mention of a drydown reminiscent of Opium? Count me in!
Thank you for this wonderful review and the generous draw. My favourite Puredistance is “I”. I live in EU.

  • This perfume is joyful and precious, it looks like a jewel. Shakespeare said “All that glisters is not gold”, in this case the light is the perfume.
    Linda – UE

  • Thank you Despina for another wonderful review and Puredistance for the kind giveaway. I do agree that even though there are more expensive metals, gold does seem to capture the imagination and drive people wild. My favorite fragrance from Puredistance is Aenotus which I find it very sexy. I’m in USA

  • I’m wondering what it smells like so expensive fragrance, probably like 1,000,000$, I think It can’t be described by words
And also I’m from Europe Croatia

  • bigscoundrel says:

Gold sounds like a wonderfully sensual and opulent oriental fragrance with its spicy citrus blended with earthy notes on a bed of vanilla amber. My favorite Puredistance fragrances are Black and M. New Jersey, USA.

  • I’d like to try it in order to experience myself the erotica & glowing energy of this perfume. I’ve never tried anything from this brand so this will be my first one. I am in Germany.

  • synaesthetic character, references to the film history, images, rich language…14 h lasting! thank you! from Finland, EU

  • What caught my attention most was calling this perfume a “grand” oriental. I thought ooh, I like the sound of that. And then later it was described as “opulent” – one of my favorite descriptions of perfume. I must try this. Thank you! Portland, Oregon

  • This is another house I have wanted to try for quite sometime. I hear nothing but really good things about them. This sounds amazing with all the spices. I do not have a favorite because I have not tried anything yet. Thank you for the draw! NY US.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I have to try any Puredistance fragrances mainly because I have a bit of sticker shock but this sounds amazing. I love spicy fragrances so maybe I will have to get myself a sample of this one. I also love all of the imagery of the stars in those beautiful gold dresses! Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I love the phrase “restrained voluptuousness,” which is almost an oxymoron. I checked and the fragrance is listed as unisex, so I am wondering how it would work on a gentleman, as all of Despina’s examples are women. From her description of the notes, I would not hesitate to try it, as the initial spiciness and the “green, aromatic earthiness” of the base would probably give it a gender-free balance. I don’t know any Puredistance fragrances, and I live in the US in NC.

  • Great review for a fragrance which seems to be sensual impressing. Glowing energy, can’ t wait to get to know how it feels 🙂
    Living in EU

  • I have never tried any of Puredistance perfumes so my understanding of Puredistance Gold comes from Despina’s review, and Jan Ewoud Vos’s philosophy, even though the perfume is designed by Antione Lie (I am assuming they must share the same philosophy to some degree, which is, creation of “understated elegance and timeless beauty” (from Vos’s writing – the link is given in the review)). I like the imagery created by Despina, with Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly in their gilded dresses, and Picasso’s drawing. It seems it is a perfume with lasting power, sensuous but not erotically thrilling (understated elegance again) – this appeals to me and reminds me of Japanese aesthetics and arts where also understated elegance and timeless beauty, and not cheap thrills, are emphasized. The ingredients seem to be the same as in some other perfumes, but the art is in how they are combined to create the final effect. Would love to try this out – thank you for introducing Puredistance Gold and to Despina for her wonderful review with good imagery and descriptions of the perfume. Thank you also for the drawing – writing to you from USA.

  • You had me at “a slow-burning sensuality that aims for deep satisfaction” Antoine Lie is one of the most fascinating perfumers working today, and I would LOVE to try this. I am in the US.

  • I liked the comparision with Liz Taylor as Cleopatra, that image that this perfume evokes. I am in EU. Thanks!

  • Interpretations of objects that don’t have a distinct smell is always interesting. It gives you a small window into their world. Citrusy, sweet, and spicy, it definitely is not how I would interpret gold, but the images of iconic moments in cinema is definitely one worth exploring. I’ve also never tried this house which would be exciting. USA

  • gold “has no smell” hmmm fascinating. i guess it could take on fragrance. but this 14 hour opium! wow. sadly no fav purefragrance yet here in california

  • This review was so evocative. Glamorous, leaning vintage classy and sensual fragrance. Would love to try it as my first Puredistance fragrance from the EU.

  • I love the description of the different cinematic memories experienced during the entire wearing of the fragrance! I love when fragrances can put you through a tour de force like that! I have never experienced any Puredistance fragrances, but have heard incredible things about M. I am in PA in the USA.

  • Sounds pretty amazing from Despina’s review. I’ve had the chance to test Sheiduna, Opardu, Black and M, and all of them are just great, great blends, with M being my favourite. Thanks for the wonderful draw, i’m in the EU.

  • I am sure this one is wonderful, just like Opardu – nothing but quality ingredients and opulence. I would love to test it. Seems dazzling.

    Based in EU. Thank you!

  • The presentation is exquisite and speaks of luxury. As I took my first glance, my mind raced ahead with the notes I expected. I was wrong.
Intoxicating, creamy and full of spice…the notes sound delish! I could only imagine 14 hours of fragrance.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Classic yet modern? Lasts 14 hours? Sounds like a winner to me. Appreciate the opportunity for the giveaway.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Having sampled this, I believe Despina really captured the scent well–first describing the progression from “pomander opening” to the gentle, but still somewhat sensuous drydown. I also loved the connections in the review to synasthesia. They definitely seemed apt in this case given the lovely, elegant nature of the scent and the visual inspiration of it. I love most of Puredistance’s scents, finding Black to be one of the most versatile spicy-oudy-woody scents. Thanks for this draw! I’m in the US.

  • Oh, how much I love Antoine Lie! He is a true original and a real artist. His oeuvre is sometimes challenging, but this is what makes him a genius.I I also love the great divas of the classic Hollywood, so I definitely want to be transported by this perfume to that world of feminity and sexuality and shameless opulence that always defined Lie’s work.

  • That presentation is so luxurious! I’m impressed by the 14 hour longevity and that base of resins sounds like a rich, warm dream!!! This house has always been out of my price range–too afraid to sample and fall in love–but I loved the review. I’m in the US.

  • What I loved about the review is the indept detail of what is envisioned when wearing the scent. Cleopatra entering Rome in her golden phoenix ensemble sounds like a sexy fragrance to me. Also I love many of the notes listed and 14 hour longevity! I have never tried any fragrance from Puredistance.

I would love to try this beauty, thanks for the chance i am in the USA, North Carolina.

  • 14h? my, my, this is an atomic bomb, not an perfume! I so badly need this in my life right now! Sadly, I have never had the chance to test a Puredistance fragrance. I live in Romania. Thank you!

  • Oh, I can only imagine this is the scent of luxury! Spices and citruses? Yes, please! Loved the review and the photos match perfectly with the description. Only pharaos come to mind when imagining how Gold smells like. EU, Romania.

  • Ooh, what a sensual statement – “it takes its time stimulating the senses, caressing and enveloping the wearer with a slow-burning sensuality that aims for deep satisfaction, rather than a quick thrill.” Sounds incredibly sexy!
    I live in the US.

  • I loved the mention of cloves, cinnamon and pepper, which are spices that really make me happy (such as in Caron’s Poivre). Labdanum, myrrh and patchouli just make it all the more attractive, and, as Despina says, deeply satisfying. My favourite Puredistance fragrance is M. I live in France, EU.

  • I am not familiar with the fragrances from this line. I liked the comparision with Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra and I am impressed by the 14 hour longevity.
    Regards from Bulgaria, EU.

  • What a beautiful review, Despina. Thanks!
And spicy/resinous drydown of this perfume reminiscent of the original YSL Opium- this sounds very gorgeous! Finally we have another perfume which has high quality and complexity of vintage perfumes.

  • Despina, thank you for the wonderful review, and a thank you to Puredistance for the generosity of the travel spray.

I have only tried one Puredistance, Warszawa and that was over 2 years ago, I definitely think it is time to try more fragrances from this house, and this review affirms that.

I’m a fan of M. Lie’s work and the notes plus Despina’s description of this sound wonderful!

I love how Despina attributes the scent to clothing/outfits. In addition to putting a color to a scent, I also try and match my scent (Whenever possible) to the outfit I’m wearing, Certain perfumes I could never wear with certain outfits, I just can’t deal with the juxtaposition.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

Despina, great review of Puredistance Gold. I haven’t tried anything from Puredistance so I don’t have a favorite. I like how the gold name and presentation are related to iconic women such as elizabeth taylor, grace kelly, and Marilyn Monroe. This fragrance sounds very pleasant and I would love to enter. I am from the USA.

  • Despina’s description invokes visions of spice heaven on Earth in my head! Reading a scent is close to YSL Opium always warms my heart!
My favorite Puredistance is M, though I am deeply into all I know and own (I, Antonia, Black).
    I am in Bulgaria, EU.

  • What a rich of colors review!!! Thanks!
so many ingredients- but I understood that this is me about spice-resins with little touch of chypre notes.
I love very much Puredistance M- my top or leathery perfumes.

  • Can’t wait to try this out. The comparison to YSL Opium was interesting because I always thought that the drydown was the best part of it. 1 by Puredistance is one of my favourite fragrances of all time and I also love White and Opardu. I live in the EU.

  • Puredistance Gold sounds exquisite and opulent! It seems like one of those fragrances that you wear on very special occasions. I love that it last 14 hours and has 36% parfum concentration.
