Don’t try and change my tune

‘Cause I thought I heard a saxophone

I’m drunk on the moon.” ~ Tom Waits

Hand to the Divine: you don’t have to yank my chain in order to draw me in this time around; I’m done for. Independent artisanal perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfumes Co. has my full attention with her latest perfume Drunk on the Moon – boozy, blowsy, and inebriating. Color me smitten.

Last week I took note of one reader’s comment which resonated, a clear criticism of my over-effusiveness. They weren’t wrong. I don’t perceive myself as some deranged demi-goddess impaled by the Muses, and resolved to take their criticism to heart (Until this sample landed in my mailbox last Friday. Now gushing is necessary and I ‘ll try to be tasteful about it). And I shall. Harpoon me if you will: my guts inform me that Providence Perfume Co. Drunk on the Moon is among the finer releases this year, even so late in the season – and there have been quite a few noteworthy fragrances among the ever-burgeoning deluge in recent memory. It will be challenging to come up with a workable top ten for 2019.

A more youthful Tom Waits’ smooth, buttery-jazz delivery of the street scene he encounters is peppered with the plaintive wail of a sax. This deliciously louche fragrance has been composed to partner his melody: it saunters loose-limbed and amply-hipped down the back alleys and boulevards in high heels. Nocturnal by nature, such beings arise at dusk and ready themselves before the broken shards of mirrored reflection – world-weary but not so broken as to exist devoid of dreams, jaded lyrics notwithstanding. Emily Dickinson voiced this memorably: “Hope” is the thing with feathers – that perches in the soul – And sings the tune without the words – And never stops – at all -”. We are not the mere sum of what we do, what has befallen us to do, what we are driven to do. I choose to believe that an element of hope may hover indefinitely, however tentative – fragile but unyielding. Hope radiates, drawing breath from the indolic.

Drunk on the Moon possesses an eloquent melodic decadence. Charna refers to a ‘velvet cream sherry base’, and I brook no argument. Nutmeg may be polarizing for a few – but then, aren’t all spices a matter of preference? In over-abundance, nutmeg is an acknowledged hallucinogen; it seems to crave the intimacy it shares with a lustful tuberose. One can’t harp enough about the rose/peach connection as I see it: the ripeness is potent and lush and immediate. Sweet myrrh aka opoponax is an intoxicating base note and a complete perfume all by itself – but introduce it to fine sandalwood and there’s a wedding ring in its future.

Charna’s seamless convergence of aromatic elements produces a sensuous fragrance which I find unutterably addictive. I’d be happy to bathe myself in it; it does us the favor of not teetering into the gooey gourmand category (something I enjoy in small doses but would not be pleased with on a daily basis) and retains a seductive sweetness poised with an animalic reminder of floral reproduction. Providence Perfumes Co. Drunk on the Moon is a joy to wear, and I hope that you will try it for yourselves; I’d love to know what you think (The sex lives of plants. It’s a beautiful thing.).

Notes: tuberose, rose, nutmeg, opoponax, peach, sandalwood

Thank you, Charna for sending along a sample. I’m mad for it.  My nose is my own…

  • This is a fragrance that sounds delightful and glorious in its charm. I love that delicate balance of sweet and seductive that the fragrance teeters along. A precious release indeed. (Commenting from USA)

  • The most interesting aspect of this fragrance is the use of nutmeg along with the listed floral and fruity notes. I am not sure what to expect in addition to the liquor-like quality, but I am intrigued by its name and unusual composition. I live in the USA.

  • ‘Eloquent melodic decadence..’ My, my, my. Sounds wonderful. And I knew immediately it was a reference to that Tom Waits song (the whole album it’s from is terrific). I’m excited that Providence Perfume Company is being recognized again. I live in Connecticut.

  • Love the Munch imagery and the Tom Waits soundtrack too . No such thing as too much nutmeg IMO
( though I may be hallucinating). Excessive nutmeg and a lustful tuberose getting their groove on? Yes, please invite me to *that* olfactory orgy!

  • I would definitely listen to Tom Waits while sniffing this! On my wishlist it goes! Thanks for the introduction to Drunk on the Moon and another fabulous draw! USA

I very much liked the way Ida’s review made the fragrance sound sinful and decadent, but in a way that is not vulgar and degraded, but rather safely in the realm of fantasy and artistic expression. The scent sounds like it’s more for evening wear than daily use, but that doesn’t scare me. If I win, I’ll just have to go out more at night. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Three words – Tom -Waits–Nutmeg. And tuberose! (Four). Drink on the Moon sounds like an, “I care what you think about me but not really” fragrance. I’d love to sniff. I live in the USA.

  • Wow, Tom Waits and Emily Dickinson in the same page! Love me a good rose-peach combo, if you then add tubereuse and opoponax, it’s a must-try! Greetings from chilly London, UK

  • Fascinating notes I am really intrigued by tuberose, rose and oppoponax. The bottle is absolutely gorgeous. Cheers from UK

  • I loved Idas description gooey gourmand with animalic floral sounds like an intoxicating blend. Thanks from UK

  • How beautiful. The sex lives of flowers. Perhaps the most “sterile” kind one can find in nature, but at the same time the most intimate and sacred. I thought the perfume sounds inebriating and special, from Ida’s words. No “wrong” note there, all opulent in their different categories. I would love to get my nose on this. From EU.

My gosh God knows I’ve been waiting for a new release from this amazing house for a long time and finally it out! Notes-no need to say. They are gorgeous and this review makes me wanna Drunk on the moon so badly. Opoponaxy tuberose is that kind of floral I’d wear in the cold weather (now!) I’d be suuuper thrilled to win this one. Greetings from Germany

  • I associate the spices, in this case the nutmeg, with the atmosphere of the party and the Christmas tradition, with the aromas that spread in the kitchens or in the cold air of the festively lit streets. The sweet and at the same time spicy scent envelops me and makes me extremely happy. From the beautiful recensine I think this fragrance is like that.

  • i love freshly grated nutmeg. i did not know it was a hallucinogen! now combined with two roses & peach…wondering in california

  • Great Piece Ida. If the Tom Waits reference wasn’t enough to sell me on this perfume, the eloquent description certainly has. Sounds lovely & reminds me to use the word ‘Louche’ more. 😉
    I’m in Cheshire UK.

  • A real Ida review, I love it. Apart from the title of this fragrance Drunk on the moon, i am particularly interested in the use of nutmeg. Would love to try this. Living in the EU

  • Queen Cupcake says:

Where to begin? As Tom Waits is one of my favorite artists, I was interested immediately. Nutmeg–mmmm. Ida, you write in technicolor! I do appreciate the fact that the list of notes is relatively short (but delightful!). Love the little scrap of a poem by Dickinson. Color me charmed. I live in Massachusetts, USA.

  • Drunk on the Moon is wonderful name. If Ida wants to bathe in it so do I. Thank you for the chance . USA

  • Your Tom Waits introduction sets the tone in my mind for this fragrance in the most positive way! Aromatic and sensuous with rose/peach and sweet myrrh notes…sounds quite intriguing! Regards from Boston USA.

  • Drunk on the Moon sounds like quite a special fragrance if can rise to the top of a lot of impressive releases this year. Seems like a must try! I like in the USA.

  • Lush and sensual notes, Drunk on the Moon sounds like the perfect fragrance to enchant on a long winter’s night. Thanks to Charna’s creativity and generosity, hope to call this scent my own.

  • I’ve never heard anything but raves for this line so I’m not surprised to hear another, I’d love to be able to get my nose on one. Thanks for the review and I look forward to reading everyone’s top tens for the year. I’m in the US and enjoy your effusive reviews!

  • Ok now I’ve never heard of perfume being described as being “boozy, blowsy, and inebriating” so now I’m intrigued. And the juxtaposition of the animalistic nature with floral makes it sound so divine. I live in MA.

I saw a post not long ago saying something about our new fragrance will be released soon (I can’t remember whether it was on FB or IG)…. it was a post from Providence Perfume. I got excited. I have not had the pleasure of smelling any of Charna’s creations but I have read nothing but great things! So, I got excited about a brand I have never even smelled before. Then I saw the post that announced Drunk on the Moon…. I read it and the notes…. WOW! Another brand that has been on my list, has just been moved to the top! This sounds beautiful and stunning! The creamed sherry accord is what really won me over. Ida… what can I say that I haven’t already?!?! Your words won me over again! You are definitely right…. to make a top 10 out of 2019 releases would be extremely difficult! I really appreciate the write-up and I was super joyous to see Drunk on the Moon brought to the spotlight, especially since it is so new! Thank you Ida and team CaFleureBon for the awesome write-up and opportunity! Thank you Charna for your amazing generosity! I live in Delaware, US! Take care all!

  • I am now listening to Tom Waits, imagining myself smelling the nutmeg, the tuberose and the opoponax…that’s how opulence probably smells..I also love Munch’s paintings. Thanks for the draw! I live in EU.

  • “Providence Perfumes Co. Drunk on the Moon is a joy to wear…”With rose/peach and opoponax as players, I’m hooked already. This is another one that I must try. Ida, don’t stop gushing (and personally I don’t think that you do. Loved the review and the draw. I’m in the USA

  • “… it does us the favor of not teetering into the gooey gourmand category “
I’ve never read a description of a scent in quite such a way. I can’t wait to try it for myself.

  • Hendrix Wilson says:

Ida’s review read like a poem. I love her review, it sounds like this fragrance could be great sex in a bottle. I would love to get my nose on it. USA

  • Nutmeg and peach which don’t border on gourmand territory and an overall addictive, intoxicating result – this sounds gorgeous and I would love to smell it, from the EU. Thanks Ida for an inspiring review!

  • This sounds fabulous – the rose/peach lushness and the “hallucinogenic” nutmeg and lustful tuberose got my attention. The fragrance sounds unique and seductive. I live in the USA.

  • I love these notes. Very vintage. Tuberose is delish. I also loved these Munch paintings that I was not familiar with. I’m in USA.

  • Oh the imagery! This sounds like a sensually wild night in a bottle! I must try it!
    Austin, TX

  • Ida, and Charna, had me at nutmeg and tuberose. Le sigh. Thank you for the opportunity to try this stunning-sounding beauty! Sending love from Northern Virginia.

  • Drunk on the moon just sounds so intriguing with its delicate liquor spirit note and yet a balance of sweet and seductive. Very precious release from Providence Perfume Co. Thanks for a great review and draw. I live in the USA.
