Prosody London Lantern Reed review

“Prosody is an old English word that means ‘the rhythm and structure of poetry.’ We felt it a fitting name for a maker of perfumes, as perfume too has its rhythms, rhymes, harmonies and surprises.” –Keshen Teo

Although inspired by the countryside of East Asia, to me, Prosody London Lantern Reed is a love letter to London, ancient and modern, along with its capricious weather. London is city where you can experience four seasons in one day, and Lantern Reed encapsulates them all, like an olfactory tour guide. A radiant morning along the embankment is captured with dazzling bergamot and grapefruit: an almost effervescent beginning that shines as brightly as a spring dawn.  The citrus moves seamlessly into silky lemon grass, both sharp and aromatic. Lemon grass builds an unusual bridge into elegant orris and peony, as spring turns to summer. The floral notes peek through flirtatiously, announcing blue skies and fluffy clouds in this city of enviable green spaces. Inevitably, Autumn gently beckons as grasses dry and lose their greenery.

Earthy vetiver takes over the story, leading you down a dark Dickensian alleyway as the light, and the mood, begin to change. Incense adds an enigmatic December mist: smoky, aromatic and spiced like midwinter toddies. Vanilla warms and welcomes like the golden glow of ancient lamplight as myrrh adds a festive touch. Your London journey is complete, through all four seasons. There is a quintessentially comforting quality to Lantern Reed. It captures the finest qualities of this most magical of cities, where you can pass the silver flanks of The Shard skyscraper and a medieval church that witnessed thirty-six monarchs, all within a short stroll. It evokes spring along the embankment and winter down Victorian alleyways with walls full of secrets that still bear their ancient gas lamps.

Best Hugh Grant movies

Still from the film Notting Hill by Richard Curtis

If you’ve ever seen the Richard Curtis film Notting Hill, you may recall that iconic scene where Hugh Grant walks though Portobello Road as the seasons change around him. If I had a time machine, I would have inveigled myself onto the set and scented him with Prosody London Lantern Reed.

Notes: Grapefruit, bergamot, lemongrass, peony, orris, vetiver, myrrh, vanilla

Disclaimer: I was sent a bottle of Prosody London Lantern Reed by the UK office. Opinions are my own.

  • My favorite London perfume has to be Sartorial by Penhaligon’s. Simply amazing. Old school but also for modern times. Samantha’s review captures the four seasons in a day via the olfactory medium of Prosody London Lanterns Reed in a lovely manner. Not familiar with Prosody London perfumes, but love reading about their name, their philosophy of using 100% natural ingredients, and mostly organic. Lantern Reed seems to be a charming perfume, with its classic notes. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the USA.

I enjoyed the description of the walk through London and how Lantern Reed smells like all 4 seasons. I live in Maryland USA. I haven’t tried any Prosody fragrances, but Whistle Moon sounds really interesting to me.

  • joshuabrian says:

Beautifully descriptive review, Samantha! I’ve not smelled any offerings from the house, but Mocha Muscari sounds amazing. They all do really!

  • Love the idea of a Fragrance that can remind us of all 4 seasons. Samantha did a great job describing the notes and making me feel each season. I did sample Rose Rondeaux from Prosody London. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Great review! I loved the concept of the perfume as giving the reader a chance to experience all four seasons at once, just like a day in London. So creative and makes me desperate to try this one. I haven’t tried Prosody yet, but I’d have a hard time trying to decide between this one (based on the review) and Oud Octavo. I would probably still go with the latter, as I love oud. Cheers from NC, USA.

  • Love your descriptions, Samantha!
Lantern Reed received very high marks yesterday from some tough, jaded critics (Ann’s family).
Prosody London is such a great line!

  • Lovely review! I like the idea that Lantern Reed transitions through the seasons. I’m definitely interested in this brand and am eyeing Rose Rondeaux with its raspberry note. Thanks for the opportunity to try this 100% natural fragrance. Mich USA

  • Love the name of the brand as well as the philosophy emphasizing naturals and sustainability. Keshen sounds like a visionary. Haven’t smelled anything with lemongrass lately, but the transition into the florals that Lauryn describes in Lantern Reed sounds lovely. Always been a fan of vetiver scents as well as the English aesthetic so the imagery through the four seasons was wonderful. A journey of a fragrance indeed! Would also love to try Mocha Muscari. Very interesting combination of notes in that one. This will be a house I’ll be keeping an eye on. USA

There were a lot of great parts of this review – the atmospheric paintings, the evocative imagery, the comparison of incense and myrrh notes to hot toddies – but I have to say, my favorite part HAS to be the Notting Hill reference 🙂 4 seasons of mopey earnest Hugh Grant? Sign me up for that scent!

I don’t have favourite Prosody London fragrance yet but the one I’d most like to try is Rose Rondeaux – in no small part because of the cafleurbon review. A life-like rose with blackcurrant, labdanum, and frankincense sounds absolutely perfect! And I live in the US.

  • Thank you Samantha for the review. I’ve not yet sampled Prosody but was intrigued by the notes listing for Oud Octavo and would love to try it out. Lantern Reed just caught my attention from your review making it my second to-try list from the house and like that you found it encapsulating all the 4 seasons 🙂 . I’m in USA

  • Prosody have been on my radar for while I really want to try them with organic and natural ingredients. I love the sound of Lantern Reed it sounds fascinating how Samantha describes it moving through all the seasons and with a fun Notting Hill reference. I have not tried any but a lot appeal especially Jacinth Jonquil as feeling Jasmine also didn’t realise they did travel sizes so will have to go for it! I am U.K.

A beautiful description by Samantha intrigued by the notes especially Vetiver, myrrh and Vanilla. I would love to try Mocha muscari. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

Notes: Grapefruit, bergamot, lemongrass, peony, orris, vetiver, myrrh, vanilla. A beautiful description by Samantha intrigued by the notes especially Vanilla being my favourite note in perfumery. I would love to try rose rondeau. Thanks a lot from the UK

I love the juxtaposition of this fragrance. The old English-rooted name combined with the forward-thinking Eco-responsibility. This tells me it’s a brand that has and maintains some classic sensibilities while making sure they’re modern and evolving for the world we live in now. I would love to try Mocha Muscari some day. In Louisiana, USA.

  • Rebecca wykes says:

Amazing review for a scent from an amazing house!
    I particularly like this part;
“London is city where you can experience four seasons in one day, and Lantern Reed encapsulates them all, like an olfactory tour guide”.
Reminds of the fantastic song by crowded House:)
Looking forward to trying this one…prosody mocha muscari is one of my all time faves

  • The first thing that piqued my interest in this house and Lantern Reed was the name of the perfume house, Prosody London; I love learning new words, especially ones that are apparently obscure and yet end up making perfect sense. I enjoy perusing Indigo Perfumery’s offerings and I’d love to try Jacinth Jonquil with its jasmine and benzoin, two of my favorite notes!

  • I loved Samantha’s use of the four seasons in describing this perfume. I haven’t tried any Prosody London fragrance, but I love their ethos. All of their scents look amazing but Mocha Muscari is the one I’d like to try. I am in the U.S.

  • I love how Samatha’s review of Lantern Reed is anchored beautifully to place. This is gorgeous: “It evokes spring along the embankment and winter down Victorian alleyways with walls full of secrets that still bear their ancient gas lamps.”
Living in Asia for many years, this delightful description conjures memories of the countryside in Taiwan and southwest China. I can feel the sun & smell the grasses in those places. These experiences call attention to the great balance of undertones I imagine run through this scent. The anise hyssop constellation that must pull slight threads of citrus, aniseed & licorice through the lemongrass, vetiver & myrrh; the soft florals & warm pepper vanilloids of bergamot, orris, & peony extending our sensory experience; the sharp woody smell of nature as medicine. The Prosody London scent I most want to sample is Lantern Reed! ❤️ Thanks to the wonderful CaFleureBon team for introducing me to Prosody London a few weeks ago! After reading Lauryn & Ida’s reviews, we purchased discovery sets! I adore Pizzicato Bliss, Ocean Commotion, and A Capella Ray! Thank you for the opportunity to experience Lantern Reed! USA

  • I would love to try Mocha Muscari. Lantern Reed reminds me of the way we can experience all seasons in Maryland too. In Maryland.

  • patrick_348 says:

I liked how Samantha played with the idea of the seasons being both sequential and simultaneous. This idea of the fragrance unfolding in a progression even while all four seasons are represented is tantalizing. I would like to try Oud Octavo and I live in North Carolina in the USA.

  • Thanks for the review Samantha! It’s always great to hear about a fragrance house that has sustainability in its core values.

I found it interesting how this fragrance brought you to the streets of London instead of Asia’s riverbanks. It made complete sense to me when you mentioned Notting Hills iconic Portobello Road scene.

I would love to try this and see if it brings me to a place I have fond memories off. Only one way to find out!

I have not smelled any perfume from Prosody London yet, so I am glad you’ve introduced me.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Uwem Bassey says:

This fragrances sounds very interesting. In addition to lantern reed, I will also like to try Oud Octavo (EDP). Maryland, US.

  • This is a beautifully evocative review. The journey through the seasons of London makes this scent sound outstanding. One other Prosidy London scent I’d like to try is Bebop Allure. I’m in the US.

  • Trinity33 says:

I love the imagery of an olfactory walk through the streets of London experiencing four seasons in a single stroll. I do remember that scene from Notting Hill and I can definitely see how Lantern Reed might capture that sensation. The peony and orris on a bed of myrrh really interest me. I’ve not tried any Prosody London but I love the origin of the name. I’m in MD, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautiful review Samantha!

I loved how refreshing this review was, just liked the notes of this fragrance. I really enjoyed how the different scent elements were tied in so beautifully to the different seasons that London experiences over the course of the year. The scene from Notting Hill is somethnig that I still remember and I am so glad that it was reference in this review.

I would love to get my nose on this fragrance! I’ve been meaning to get a sampler pack and to get my nose on Jacinthe Jonquil as well.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Oh goodness, Lantern Reed sounds amazing! It is rare when a perfume’s notes are all favs. Lantern Reed meets that tough challenge! Samantha’s description of the scents in a winter evening in London is beautiful. Honestly, I’ve never heard of Prosody London perfumes but this review of Lantern Reed has created a strong lemming! I will plan to visit Mr. Teo’s shop when I visit my son in London.
    I’m in the US.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I’ve never heard of this house but I’m intrigued. I love how you compare the transitioning notes of this fragrance to the four seasons. Thank you for the draw. From the US.

  • I would love to try all of the releases from Prosody London; I haven’t tried any of them yet. I’m most interested in trying “Lantern Reed” and “Pizzicato Bliss”. I appreciate when Samantha introduces Prosody London when she talks about how high-quality, enjoyable, and eco-friendly the company is: it is a reminder to me that I should try Keshen Teo’s fragrance releases a.s.a.p. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I loved the references to Notting Hill and would love to see if the image that evokes in my head matches the scent! I have tried and very much liked some Prosody fragrances, especially Bebop Allure, and have been desperate to try Lissom
    Linden and Jacinthe Jonquil

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really enjoyed the description of the walk through London, along with Samantha’s highlighting Lantern Reed’s uniqueness, by pointing out how it smells like all 4 seasons.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA. I have never tried a Prosody, but there are AT LEAST 3 that I want to get my nose on:
    1) Rose Rondeaux
    2) Oud Octavo
    3) Mocha Muscari

  • Tracey Tyerman says:

What a fabulous win. Prosody London perfumes are divine. I have had Neroli Nuance, Lantern Reed and my latest is Mocha Muscari which I love. The Prosody London range is fabulous. I love that they’re a UK founder and all products used are natural and they smell amazing!

  • I love that this evokes all the different parts of London. I don’t have a favorite because I haven’t tried anything from the house before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!
