Gian Luca Perris, perfumer and Founder of Perris Montecarlo and Luca Maffei (alone, together and separately) have joined forces to create Perris Monte Carlo Bergamotto di Calabria, Mandarino di Sicilia and Cedro di Diamante, an olfactive tribute to the citrus fruits of Southwestern Italy. All of Esxence 2018 was buzzing with excitement. And rightly so, as they are each are as good as citrus gets.

Sampling Perris Monte Carlo Bergamotto di Calabria, Mandarino di Sicilia and Cedro di Diamante was a highlight of Esxence 2018 for all of us (see Michelyn’s, Ermano’s, Danu’s, Lauryn’s and Sebastian’s Best of Show reports).

Perris Monte Carlo Bergamotto di Calabria: In their pursuit in using only the finest natural ingredients, Gian Luca Perris and Luca Maffei have eschewed machine-extracted bergamot oil in favor of the time-honored “Sponge Bergamot”; wherein the oil is passed thru a natural sea-sponge which eliminates the pith and membrane, and in doing so removes much of the overly green and bitter facets of the Linalyl Acetate so common in commercially produced oils. The Sponge Bergamot is created by two brothers in Calabria, the “toe” of southwest Italy, and production is limited to approximately 20 kilos per year. Working with award-winning wunderkind perfumer Luca Maffei, the end result is a bergamot oil that is unlike any other I’ve smelled; astoundingly floral and fruity, this is a bergamot that feels truly “alive” jumping off your skin and making you dizzy with its beauty.

It’s a veritable explosion of citrus and slightly spicy notes that will have your nose glued to your wrist. In the 80’s when I was working in Northeastern Brazil, I remember stopping at a beachside juice stand for a “Suco de Laranja” (fresh pressed orange juice) but the young man pulled out what looked like giant tangerines which he proceeded to juice over ice. The ice cold natural sweet and stunning floral taste made me catch my breath. The smell and taste of that juice were unlike anything I’d encountered and this is what the Bergamotto di Calabria fragrance brings to mind; this is a truly special one-of-a-kind scent creation and if you’re a fan of bergamot notes, you absolutely cannot miss this one. This is my favorite of the three, although the next two are certainly strong contenders.Notes:  Petit grain, neroli, fresh ginger, jasmine absolute, Orange absolute, pepper, Iris, sandalwood, musk, vetiver, patchouli.

Mandarino di Sicilia: Turning now to Sicily, the island at the end of the “toe” M. Perris honors the green mandarin, a slightly drier and more bitter citrus fruit with it’s own unique and beautiful scent. Using young mandarins that are not quite ripe gives this Eau de Parfum the fresh and green notes reminiscent of the green mandarin leaves and shoots, and the addition of the yellow mandarin, jasmine, and geranium sweeten the jus slightly. It’s as if you’re having lunch at the height of a warm Sicilian afternoon, in the midst of a green citrus grove with the fragrance of the hot leaves and fruit mixing with the heat emanating from the ground underfoot. Magical and evocative.Green mandarin, bitter orange, yellow mandarin, petitgrain, jasmine, geranium, orange blossom, cedar, amber, musk.

Cedro Limon Johann Christophe Volkamer 1908©

Cedro di Diamante  by Luca Maffei, has nothing to do with cedar wood, but rather the citron-like Italian fruit known as Cedro Límon, grown in and around the Calabrian town of Diamante. A sometimes football-sized nubby yellowish citrus whose pith and zest are prized throughout Mediterranean and Middle East countries for their flavor and glorious scent, the Cedro oil is also used extensively in perfume creation. Perris Monte Carlo Cedro di Diamante with its base of oakmoss and musk, and spiced notes of pepper, ginger, and cardamom is the most “fougére” of the trio, a bracing and electrifying pure green citrus jolt which is perfect for summer splashing; a grown-up version of the beloved Jean Nate splash from the 70’s, but without the sweet and floral overload. I am already looking forward to dousing myself in the morning aprés le bain and feeling fresh, vital and full of life. Citron, lime, lemon, lemon verbena, pink pepper, ginger, cardamom, Sichuan pepper,   iris, oakmoss, musk.

If you think it isn’t possible to create fragrances that still manage to surprise and delight using familiar notes, or feel like you’ve “smelled it all”, then turn your nose towards the three new citrus Eau de Parfum created by  Perris Monte Carlo and prepare to cast off cynicism and your nose will rejoice.

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to Gian-Luc Perris and Perris Monte Carlo for supplying my samples of Perris Monte Carlo Bergamotto di Calabria, Perris Mandarino di Sicilia and Perris Monte Carlo Cedro di Diamante. . The opinions are my own.

I always enjoy Roberts reports. They are excellent. I would like to try the Bergomotto de Calabria . This sounds like it could be a joyful fragrance . Jim. Md.USA

  • Steve A. says:

I am patient and will wait for Cedro di Diamante (if I’m chosen). The most “fougere” of the trio. US

  • The citrus collection sounds fabulous, with all those natural ingredients. I’m a big fan of moss, so Cedro di Diamante would be my choice. Yes, I’ve been following the reports from Esxence, and am looking forward to sampling a few new creations. In the US. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • I love the description of all 3! I will try to get samples of all of them as soon as they are released at the end of May. But I love your description of Cedro di Diamante being a grown up version of Jean Nate. I’d choose that one, for sure, if I win!
    I live in the U.S.

  • All 3 of them sounds really great and the bottles are fire! I enjoy all the reports from Robert and Esxence related. I would love to try them but Cedro di Diamante would be my choice. Thanks for this amazing giveaway, i live in the EU.

  • Great little read, these three fragrances all sound wonderful the bottles are really nice also.I just adore a citrus done right ,in the summer it can actually be refreshing and cooling, Tom Ford has a couple of wonderful citrus blends that are my go to summer bangers Mandarino d’amalfi and neroli portifino . Im looking to add to my small summer collection these 3 upcoming Perris Montecarlo releases sound mouth-wateringly good I’d love to try these.Out of the three to win if Im lucky enough I think my pick would be between Bergamotto di Calabria and Mandarino di Sicilia Im torn between the two ,both have a wonderful medley of notes perfect for the heat …but if had to pick one at this time Bergamotto di Calabria would be one I’d choose.

    Im in Canada .

And I have absolutely been following your Esxence reports.

And thanks for the great article and very generous giveaway !

  • DespinaVnt says:

For a moment there I felt I was about to smell the fragrances just by reading this article, truly vivid and juicy description!
I am very intrigued by the unique olfactory identity of the ” Sponge Bergamot “, as described by Robert.
I think my choice would be the Perris Monte Carlo Bergamotto di Calabria.
    I live in EU (France).
    Thank you,
    D.

  • Michael Russo says:

Loved the preview and am a fan of rose de taif and oud imperial . I am not usually a citrus lover but Perris Montecarlo is a great company. I read all the links including the OSMOART Bergamote and your reports
I definitely like the sound of Bergamotto di Calabria. My grandparents were born there as well.
    I live in the US

  • Richard Potter says:

Haven’t really explored citrus, but this wonderful review certainly peaks my interest. I love the last paragraph. Bergamote. USA

  • fazalcheema says:

I am intrigued by it. These seem like citrus perfumes quite different from other citrus perfumes. The extraction through sponge method results in citrus perfumes that emphasize the floral elements. I will leave it to Perris Monte Carlo to decide which may appeal to me the most if I am a huge lover of Vintage Dior Eau Sauvage, in case I win the draw. Thanks a lot for the draw. I am in US.

  • Even if I wasn’t already a lover of bergamot, Robert’s review would have sold me on Bergamotto di Calabria! I have been reading through your coverage of Esxence. <3 I'm in Nevada.

  • Bergamotto di Calabria sounds divine! I love the zingy floralness of bergamot, so would be delighted to try what sounds like an unusual fragrance. I’m intrigued by the process of creating ‘sponge bergamot’ – and curious to experience the olfactory difference. Writing to you from NC, USA. Thanks for the opportunity to enter the drawing!

  • Catanosmia says:

I’m a huge bergamot fan so I’d love to try Bergamotto di Calabria. I loved how he compared it to the sensation of drinking fresh squeezed juice. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • tiffanie says:

Bergamotto di Calabria sounds spectacular. I adore citrus scents, especially bergamot. The smell of the leaves and fruit, and the pleasant odor of the ground of the orchard wafting in the heat of the sun, these are heaven for my nose.

I will happily follow Robert’s recommendation and say that Bergamotto di Calabria would be my first choice among the three fragrant gems presented here. I’ve added Perris Monte Carlo to the list of houses I would like to know better in 2018. The Esxence reports are wonderful, I look forward to reading them each year and imagining that superbly scented milieu. I am in the US, and send a thank you to Gian Luc Perris and to CaFleureBon for the generous draw.

  • gvillecreative says:

I’ve been LOVING the Esxence reports (and I’m excited at the many light/citrus/zesty frags you’ve been reporting on). I’m a HUUUUUGE citrus lover, and all 3 of these sound right up my alley. I don’t think I’ve tried any bergamot fragrances that are created using ‘sponge bergamot’, so I’m definitely going to sample Bergamotto di Calabria– but the one I really want to win is Mandarino di Sicilia. From what you’ve described (a drier citrus with jasmine and geranium and oakmoss) this sounds like something I’d love, since I love green fragrances. I live in the US (splitting time between Florida and Tennessee) and would KILL to win!

Cafleurebon is the ONLY place reporting on Esxcense, and the only place reporting all these new debuts! Thanks for the updates!

  • mariotgomez says:

Several years ago, I was lucky to meet Gian Luc and his sister when introducing Perris Monte Carlo line at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco. My first Perris Monte Carlo was Oud Imperial, ever since then I have been following their line. I was also lucky enough to meet Robert in person during an Oregon Envoyage Fragrance event. I have been following his reviews. Any of the trios mentioned in this article sound amazing. If I had to narrow it down to one, it would be, Cedro di Diamante . Mario from The Bay Area, USA. Thank you for the continuation of covering the Esxence events.

  • Just Add Light says:

Definitely have been keeping up with the Esxence reports thus far! What a wonderful description of the bergamot oil extraction process in Bergamotto di Calabria. I honestly had no idea that it could affect the olfactory texture so dramatically! I would have to agree that it sounds the most appealing of the bunch; although…mandarin is one of my favourite notes, and the combination of both green and yellow with geranium and amber in Mandarino di Sicilia is also quite attractive. And how about the lemon verbena, ginger and oakmoss combination in Cedro di Diamante? A citrus fougere? They all sound amazing! What a superbly written article. I’ll definitely have to try a cedro limon then next time I’m in Italy. From Canada!

  • Great review by Robert. I enjoyed reading about “bergamont sponge” and the process as it was educational. My choice would be Cedro di Diamante if I were lucky enough to win. Thanks for the opportunity and I live in the US! 🙂

  • taskphorce says:

Great article! This extraction of bergamot seems so intriguing and I’m always up for a mind blowing citrus scent. This seems like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. I recently read your Esxence article regarding the Wide Society scents which also appeal to me! I would love to win the Bergamotto di Calabria and I reside in Niagara Falls, New York (USA)….Thank You to All

  • Tarleisio says:

Iø’m not entirely sure where you had me, Robert – the Perris Monte Carlo part ( <3 ), the citrus part or just the all sorts of excited part. Perris Monte Carlo have taken my breath away with the few creations I've tried so far, so please – take me away to Mandarino! I've been following ALL the reports from Esxence, and can't wait to find that next discovery! I'm in Denmark, but I'll take Sicily if I can get it! 😉

  • Robert H. says:

Thanks all for the great comments! Meeting Gian Luc was such a highlight for me at Exsence, and having him walk us through the 3 new perfumes was marvelous!

  • When Robert says something knocks his socks off, then I pay attention! Robert has a great nose and I enjoy reading his reviews. All three of the new fragrances sound lovely; I guess Bergamotto di Calabria appeals to me the most because the notes are so different. Even if I don’t win, I will be searching out these scents.

Yes, I have been reading the wonderful reporting on Esxence.

    I am in the U.S.

  • Colourblind says:

I want to have all 3…but if u have to choose it will be bergamotto. I am based in EU! Thank you for this wonderful review. I’m glad of the fresh trend this year!!

  • Even though it is hard to put all your praise for the bergemote aside, it is Mandarino di Sicilia that appeals most to me. I would love to win this to Germany! Thank you!

  • Oh, let me add I indeed folllowed all your photos and reports on this website and in instagram (@dufthochzwei), highly appreciated!

  • Wow the Bergamot one sounds just what I would love. Ever since I smelled Bergamote 22 I have been hunting for something even better….being too poor to buy the Le Labo even at discount *cough*… so yes, the review really piques my interest, if it is your favourite too.

Thanks for the draw as always!

  • marcopietro says:

What a brilliant, sparkling and revitalizing trio of citrus scents! I really admire the work of Maffei and I am sure that the result of these new releases is fantastic.
It’s difficult to choose between the three, but at the top of the list I put Bergamotto di Calabria.
I have read all your Esxence reports, including the one about Perris Bergamot, and I enjoyed them. It’s always a pleasure to know your opinions on what is presented in those events.
    I live in Italy.
    Thanks!

  • kaitracid says:

These 3 sound so good that it’s hard to pick one that interest me the most. I do like what this house does and together with Kuca as a perfumer, my interest is on! I love a good fresh scent and probably my most liked note is bergamot, so Bergamotto di Calabria could be the winner for me. Thanks for this amazing draw, I live in Europe.

  • Wonderful review, like always. I read all reviews and all of the Esxence reports on Cafleurebon. These three fragrances are all sounds fabulously. If I would be as lucky to win, my choice would be… Bergamotto di Calabria. Hard to chose only one. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I enjoyd Robert’s report. Thanks!!!
Especially I liked description of Bergamotto di Calabria! I am intrigued by this words: “astoundingly floral and fruity, this is a bergamot that feels truly “alive” jumping off your skin and making you dizzy with its beauty”.
I would like to win Bergamotto di Calabria, although other 2 perfumes sound very fresh and beauty.
    I live in Armenia.

  • jeremyn87 says:

I’d like to win Cedro di Diamante. Citron has such a unique and distinct smell compared to other citruses. Though the other frags sound great too.I thought the different way of extracting the bergamot oil sounded pretty cool.
I’ve been following the other esxence reports and commented on some of them.
    I’m in the US

  • NiceVULady says:

Robert’s reviews always conjure up a vision of the fragrance he is describing. I would love to win the Bergamotto di Calabria. Sounds awesome. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Marianne says:

I love the reports. The Bergamotto di Calabria has captured my heart for sure and I would love to try. I live in Sweden.

  • Beautiful read, thank you! Even if the fragrances are inspired by the Italian countryside, I can’t help but think of it being a slight homage to the perfume made in the 1700’s in Cologne, Germany. The one line in this article/review was “If you think it isn’t possible to create fragrances that still manage to surprise and delight using familiar notes, or feel like you’ve “smelled it all”, then turn your nose towards the three new citrus Eau de Parfum created by Perris Monte Carlo and prepare to cast off cynicism and your nose will rejoice.” I would be happy with any of the three to be honest it is going to be difficult to choose…if I was lucky enough to win I would have to probably go with Bergamotto di Calabria based on your description. US

  • Robert, what a fascinating review of the famous trio! The Exsence posts have been an absolute delight to read, and this one is no exception. I’m always on the lookout for a perfume that could surprise me.
I will try them all, of course, when I get the chance, but the one I’m most curious about is Bergamotto di Calabria (although it’s nearly impossible to choose, they all sound incredible). It’s nice to think that even when the eBay vintage stock runs out we’ll still have something great to wear 🙂
Thank you for the generous draw. I live in Russia.

  • fleurdelys says:

Thank you Robert for this wonderful report !
Citruses are some of my favorite notes. Soothing and uplifting.
I have been following all the reports from Esxence and plan to go there myself next year. It seems like an incredible experience.
It’s very hard to choose one Perris perfume. All three seem incredible.
I would have to choose Mandarino di Sicilia, because I love the smell of mandarine.
    Thank you for the draw.
    I’m in the EU.

  • I have finally gotten around to trying several Perris Monte Carlo perfumes. I am very picky about perfumes, but was surprised that all those I tried were definite *likes*. Perris Monte Carlo makes some darn good perfumes. I have not sampled much in the citrus range. These all sound wonderful. Mandarino di Sicilia would be my choice. I love the smell of mandarins and would be surprised if Sicilian ones were not the best of all.
I have read all of the Esxence reports. There was a lot this year that I found extremely interesting. Live in the USA.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Thank you for this report! I love hearing about the plethora of new releases at Esxence. I wear citrus all summer, and almost exclusively on hot days. It’s all I can take. You can never have too many citrus releases! These all sound like they would be fantastic, but I think I would choose Bergamotto di Calabria if I could only sniff one… if only to smell the sponge bergamot. I’m in the USA. Thank you!!!

  • I always enjoy reports by Robert and others. Well written and great pics.
All 3 fragrances sound really good to me. Seem like great citrus fragrances and will be nice to wear them on these warm sunny days.
Mandarino di Sicilia and Bergamotto di Calabria interest me more. Tough to choose between them right now. Thanks for the giveaway

Wonderful to read Robert’s in-depth review of Perris de Monte Carlo’s new White series tribute to Mediterranean citrus! I’ve been following all the other great coverage of this new line you’ve posted from Esxence. I’m a big fan of Perris Monte Carlo fragrances already and of course now am very intrigued to try this new collection. I especially appreciate the explanation of the traditional sponge method of refining the bergamot in the Bergamotto di Calabria, and wonderful to learn about. While I’m curious about all three (and the “fougere” reference to the Cedro di Diamante being very interesting), I would most like to try the glorious sounding Bergamotto.

  • I’ve read the Esxence reports as I am intrigued by the new releases. I am a big fan of Perris Carlo fragrances and Oud Imperial is my favorite so far. My interest in the new fragrances is Bergamotto which have my favorite fragrance notes. I’m in the USA.

  • doowtnehpets says:

The thing that appeals to me is the way the get the bergamot oil. I always wondered how extacts are made. Pretty interesting. Bergamotto di Calabria sounds good to me. I have been following the reports on my RSS feed.

  • ElenaChiss says:

Mandarino di Sicilia sounds perfect for my upcoming holiday at the sea. From the review, it is right up my alley regarding a summer scent: fresh, green, joyful and sparkling.
And, of course, I read the reports. I am a daily user of the blog. I read every new article is posted.
    Thank you!

  • I find that all 3 perfumes sounds very attractive, but Bergamotto di Calabria’s description intrigued me more, especially that perfumer use naturak bergamonte oil. I like citrusy fragrances very much…especially thay are necessary in hot weather.
I always read Cafleurebon reviews and reports every day.

Thank you for Robert for this wonderful report on Perris Monte Carlo.
The new Collection of Citruses seems perfect, especially with Luca Maffei as the perfumer.
I’m a big fan of Perris, Oud Imperial amongst my favorites.
I haven’t missed a single report from Esxence.
Reading about the sponge extraction process of Calabarian Bergamot made me appreciate even more the effort of sourcing the finest ingredients for a perfume.
I love bergamot, so Bergamotto di Calabria would be just perfect for me.
Thank you for the very generous draw.
    I’m from the EU.

  • THANKS so much for this draw! An olfactive tribute to the citrus fruits of Southwestern Italy seems to be a spring and summer delight! I have not been too keen on summer freshy’s in the past so I always interested in finding a scent that catches my attention. Without putting my nose on these fragrances I can’t tell how much difference they really are. All the top notes seem to be bright and refreshing for this upcoming warm season here in the US. All three sound great! Esxence being the scent of excellence… ya, would have loved to be there! Mandarino di Sicilia being all about oranges and sweetened by the geranium interests me, so I guess that’s my choice. I do live in the US…

  • newyork318 says:

This collection sounds very interesting. I was excited to read about the Cedro Límon, which I had vent heard of before, so my pick would be Cedro di Diamante. I am enjoying all of the Esxence from USA.

  • Robert’s description of the freshly squeezed tangerines over ice had my mouth watering so I would be ecstatic to win Bergamotto di Calabria. I have been following all the reports from Esxence and my wish list keeps getting longer and longer! I am in the U.S.

  • Sérgio Teixeira says:

Thank you for another great Giveaway. This 3 offerings from the Perris Monte Carlo seem really appealing. What a surprise to see Robert using a portuguese expression (although with a brazilian accent, i presume) suco de laranja, to describe Bergamotto di Calabria, which considering the notes described should be my favorite, and therefore my choice if I’d be so lucky to win.
Watching and reading the reports about Esxence is the only way I could be there, so you can be sure I haven’t missed one.
    From Portugal with beijos.

Wow, always learn so much. I didn’t know about the “Sponge Bergamot”. I’m not typically a “green” fan, but maybe with this method it could tone it down enough for me. The patchouli in this spikes my interest. So I’d love the chance at the Bergamot di Calabria (especially since it’s Robert’s favorite). I’ve been following the Esxence reports and watching various vloggers on youtube. It has inspired me to order some samples which will be arriving on Saturday. Happy sniffing to all. USA resident. Thanks for a chance!

  • Thanks for another great review and for the coverage of Esxence. I only own one Perris Monte Carlo (the fabulous Osmanthe) but I would love to expand my collection. Robert’s review of Bergamotto was irresistible, so that is the one that I would choose.

  • m.r.everything says:

These new scents from Perris Monte Carlo sound amazing! I have been wanting to purchase (and will) Bois d’Oud for quite some time. I have never smelled it, but the line, the reviews, and the notes have made my mind up to buy it anyway. These new fragrances sound great for the upcoming hot months. Robert did an amazing job describing these scents and made my mind up on the first one. I love how he described Bergamotto di Calabria as making you feel alive and makes you dizzy with its beauty! The “Sponge Bergamot”smelling fruity and floral sounds even better! This is the one I would definitely have to pick! I have been following the Esxence reports both on here and social media! I appreciate that as most of us were not able to attend! I am really excited for The Wide Society and cant wait for them to be available! Thank you for the opportunity, as usual! I live in Delaware, USA!

  • psebi101 says:

Bergamote is one of my favorite notes ever and probably my favorite in the warm weather, it smells devine! So when reading the review of Bergamotto di Calabria, I was instantly hooked and now I really want to get my nose on this. The other two sound pretty good as well, but Bergamotto will probably be a winner for me and I would surely chose it. I’m in the EU, thank you for this.

  • aurora_ru says:

Italians know what to do with lemons! This technology sounds great, actually i love also the smell of sea sponges! All three sound so juicy, the description and pictures are so appealing, but as from all the citruses the smell of cedrat is my favorite, I would like to win Cedro di Diamante.
    Thank you so much!

  • I like Bergamotto di Calabria best, because when you wear it there is sudden infusion of so much life and energy. At first I thought it was very strong, but by the time i left the house, it had suddenly changed….. However, the people at the office love it on me and while people say bergamot is for men, this certainly works for a female head of office ! This is not the usual bergamot you would find in cologne quality, but nearer to the Guerlain type, which means – class and quality. I am a lady but I love bergamot perfumes. I use it at work when my mind needs to be alert and my spirit is uplifted. I need another bottle !
