"You know that place between sleep and awake, that place where you still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always love you" –Peter Pan

My wife tells me I sometimes talk before sleep, but not to her.  Because I’m already dreaming,  the conversation usually goes something like this:  “Hon – did you remember to take the trash out tonight?” To which I reply, “Yeah, I did.  I took it over to the sleeping dinosaur and you need to stand by that tree.”  Which makes perfect sense to me, as my body and mind depart for nocturnal lands.   And there needs to be a perfume, a scent that is meant for that moment between waking and dreaming, when your existence is suspended between two realms and anything might occur.  I think Parfum Divine’s L'Être Aimé Femme is what that moment should smell like – a bright and adventurous moment, as if your body has just gently pushed off from shore on a pole raft into a strong unexpected current.

DIVINE Parfums is a hidden gem of a House owned by Breton Yvon Mouchel (we have reviewed L’Homme Infini by Yann Vasnier and last year’s sensual rose Spirituelle.)  Superstar Perfumer Yann Vasnier of Givaudan created L'Être Aimé Femme in 2008, and M. Vasnier’s work is wonderfully slippery. Every phase of this fragrance is superimposed slightly on the next, like fleeing memories of a dream you’re trying to hold on to, but can’t.

L'Être Aimé starts out with a zesty hit of bergamot, nectarine and neroli, with the bergamot and nectarine winning out so the opening notes don’t become neon signs blinking in the windows of your dream hotel.  Instead, the nectarine and bergamot blend with a pithy, powdery iris while the rest of the floral heart notes come and warm the sheets with immortelle’s odd spice and a touch of rose petal.

The layered blend in this fragrance is the essence of your conscious mind surrendering to the liminal world ahead, as a child’s hand or an old crone’s stick leads the way through the oncoming fog.  The last strains of the top notes are like sunlight disappearing further and further into the tops of gnarled trees, with your head growing heavier by the moment as the light fades. By the time the drydown kicks in, no trace of the waking world remains, replaced instead by a muzzy, midnight sky of labdanum, vanilla, amber and sandalwood – with just a hint of mossy, earthy vetiver to remind you that gravity will take hold again and lift your head to face the world you know.

LittleNemoDreaming

This fragrance should interest anyone involved in lucid dreaming or astral travel – the way the notes ripple into one another pulls the wearer into a softer state where boundaries break down easily.  I’m not one who wears perfume to bed as a rule, but I think Divine has created a scent worthy to be shared with a pillow or your pajamas.  Maybe it’s the immortelle note – the slightly sweet, slightly Indian take-out curry weirdness of it that echoes the subconscious realm so well.  There’s a deliciously exotic, 19th century Alice in Wonderland (or Little Nemo in Slumberland) quality to this perfume that I absolutely love.   So wear it at the end of the day, or the start of a new one, as a reminder that there are two worlds available to travel in – one in which you are expected to live, and one in which the unexpected invites you to visit from time to time.

Steve Johnson, Editor

Disclosure: From my own collection; the perfume is marketed towards women, but it is easily shared.

i have two perfumes from Divine and I acquired both of them last year. This fragrance touches on both gourmand and citrus elements which may be why it has unisex elements depsite being marketed to women..really excited about this draw. I am in the US

  • This is just will enough to pick my interest:

I really would love to win this one, thanks for this great review and for the draw.

  • This description of this beautiful scent and the fact that it is a creation of Yann Vasnier make this scent most appealing. I have only tried Divine but I am hooked.

    I live in the U.S.

  • Nectarine is a note I never smelled in perfume, but I love in real life. My Grandpa grew nectarine trees, and every summer their juice was one of the most awaited fruit experience. Furthermore, the powdery iris instantly draws me in!
Thank you for the chance! I am in Bulgaria (EU).

  • Ok.. I’d say this sounds dreamy, but that would be redundant. and possibly an interesting meditation scent. I’ve never tried the Divine perfumes, but this would sound like a good place to start. I live in the US

  • I have never tried any of Divine Parfums. I think it’s a very good idea, a perfume inspired of dreams. I’m from Europe.

  • That languorous moment between sleeping and waking is one of my favourite times of day. Still a novice in perfumes, but this sounds like something I should try. much love from Sweden (EU).

  • L’Être Aimé Femme notes of bergamot, nectarine, neroli, nectarine immortelle’s odd spice and a touch of rose petal a mixing that I would love to experience especially if vetiver makes the closing theme is the reason that I would love to experience it.
I live in EU and I thank you for this lovely trip to the “two worlds one in which you are expected to live, and one in which the unexpected invites you to visit from time to time”
Unfortunately I never had the chance to experience any of the Divine House perfumes.

  • This sounds gorgeous, and I love the artwork of Vladimir Kush- have you seen ‘The Purse’? I haven’t tried ay fragrances from Divine yet. The addition of the immortelle to that list of notes sounds lovely. I’m in the US.

  • I like immortelle as a note a great deal. I don’t yet have a favorite Divine. Hopefully if I win my first one is my fave. 🙂 US.

  • I have the original Divine and it is a favorite. I am glad to see this house get more attention.
It is a very special time between sleeping and awareness. I enjoyed this review

    Thank you Divine and CaFleureBon

  • This sounds dreamy! I do enjoy certain scents at night, my “pajama perfumes”, and I would love to win this one! I live in the US. Thanks.

  • I haven’t tried any Divine fragrances yet but have several on my wish list. The notes for this one sound great and I would love to try another contender for my bedtime scents collection. Also, any mention of Wonderland or dreams gets my attention so good job creating a lemming. I’m in the US. Thank you.

  • What a lovely review. A perfume for lucid dreaming and astral projections? I’m in! I have only sampled L’homme Infini, so that’d be my favorite from Divine.

I am in the US. THanks for the draw.

  • I have owned the male counterpart and liked it for its immortelle as well, but to be honest the notes in the “femme” version, which I have not smelled, sound more enticing with the labdanum, vanilla, amber and sandalwood dry down. The men’s version was a bit off for me with its celery and basil combination of notes. L’Homme Sage remains my favorite from the house, though I haven’t tried several of the newer offerings yet. I’m in the USA – thanks for the opportunity!

  • Ah….one of my favorite houses! I am so thrilled to see this review! I don’t understand why Divine doesn’t get more love in the perfume blogosphere. If I ever make it to France, the Bretagne boutique will be my first stop.

The drydown sounds, well, divine, and the opening with the nectarine/bergamot combination sounds like something I need to try ASAP!

My favorite Divine fragrance is also in my personal Top 10…L’Infante.

It suits any mood or occasion. It can be my comfort scent, my wear-anywhere scent, my any occasion scent, my Special Occasion scent. Always appropriate, always lovely.

Thank you, Mr Mouchel, and Cafleurebon, for a chance to win this fragrance!

  • That twilight state between waking and slumber is so beautiful, how lovely to include a scent for it. I have yet to try any perfumes from this house and would be thrilled to win this draw. Many thanks, I’m in The US.

  • I’ve never tried a Divine Parfums scent, but this review sounds fascinating. I’m on the hunt for really ephemeral scents – and the dreamscape of this one sounds like it could be a good fit. The explanation of the layering of notes sounds like a fragrant version of Ombre – and reminds me of a beautiful scarf. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • I am intrigued by the notes, especially the nectarine and powdery iris. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried any Divine perfumes.
Thank you for the chance – I live in the U.S.

  • I have not tried Divine Parfums yet. I think it’s an interesting idea to get inspired of dreams. from Romania.

  • This scent seems soft and dreamy and I would love to try it and experience the surreal feeling it personifies! I enjoyed Spirituelle. In the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I would love to try this one! The scent pyramid sound so interesting and the description of it as if going from waking to sleeping makes it intriguing indeed. In the US. Cheers!

  • I’m not yet familiar with Divine Parfums. I find the Labdanum in combination with flowers very appealing in L’Être Aimé. I live in the Netherlands, EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • I have never tried any of the Divine Parfums or even heard of this house before until I read this article today. I think its very brilliant to the idea of capturing the moment of wakefulness and sleep in a bottle, which I’m sure wasn’t as easily created and blended. Sleep to me is a fascinating thing which sometimes I get lost in very vivid dreams.

If the perfume is half as beautiful as the review, it should be a winner! I’d love to try this, anything with powdery iris is a hit with me. I’ve not tried any Divine perfumes. Thank you for the draw! I’m in the USA.

  • The immortalle note sounds like it was used in a very interesting way! I have not tried any perfumes from divine yet. I am in the us thank you!

  • Gosh, this was a charming review! I’d have to be made of stone not to want to try this perfume. I still haven’t tried any of the Divine scents, but have read nothing but good things about them, so will have to remedy that, starting with this one. I’m in the US.

  • I ve checked Divine perfumes website and read descriptions of scents. They sound lovely and I would like to try any of them. Mostly Divine. As for L’Être Aimé I am curious about the immortelle note. Thanks for chance to win and try it. Europe, Lubka

  • Jennifer Witt says:

The idea of a scent that is perfect to wear to bed is engaging to me I would love to try this one out. I do not currently have a Divine favorite. I live in the US. Thanks for the lovely draw.

  • L’Être Aimé Femme is the only Divine I’ve tried so far, and I really like it!! I had been worried about the immortelle, because almost inevitably it is compared to the scent of maple syrup and that just doesn’t appeal to me. But L’Être Aimé fortunately doesn’t read as syrupy to me. I’m in the US; thanks for the chance to win this lovely perfume.

  • I have visited Divine a few years ago on a tour of Brittamy and he was most charming and clearly loved fragrance. I agree that this House should get more attention. I really enjoyed the half awake half asleep dream quality of the review. My favorite is Divine
Thank you for a lovely opportunity

  • I can’t help but be reminded of the Robin Williams film, “What Dreams May Come” — it seems like this scent is evocative of a similar spirit. They could be anything from dreamy to nightmarish, couldn’t they? What a beautiful idea for a scent — even a line of scents!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

The “deliciously exotic, 19th century Alice in Wonderland quality to this perfume” appeals to me about L’Être Aimé. I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a Divine Parfum

  • This appeals to me because I am interested in lucid dreaming and always wear perfume to bed. I would like to wear this to bed to experience “a softer state where boundaries break down easily.” I’m in the US, and have yet to try any Divine perfumes. Thanks!
