Parfums de Nicolaï Baïkal Leather Intense (2019) + 30th Anniversary Draw

Patricia de Nicolaï

Patricia de Nicolaï © celebrates her 30th year as an Independent Perfumer with Baïkal Leather Intense

Madame Patricia de Nicolai commemorates her eponymous house’s 30 years, a singular achievement for anyone with a vision. Few perfumers and niche brands can claim the level of longevity and excellence for which Madame is justifiably renowned – or her formidable expertise. For her 30th anniversary nothing less than intense would suffice, and that is her current gift to us: Baïkal Leather Intense.

Madame Patricia de Nicolaï claimed my heart in 2006 when she released what I consider a Holy Grail fragrance: Le Temps d’Une Fête. 1989’s New York blew me out of the water; I still keep it in my collection (for Despina’s marvelous review of the 2014 New York Intense, please read here). I’ve adored a great many of her compositions over the last 30 years and pray that she continues to flourish artistically for years to come.

 what is cuir de russie

Siberian forests near Lake Baïkal (Vladka on the Road blogspot)©

The Baïkal Mountains are located in southern Siberia, home to dense forests populated by Downy birch, Siberian fir, spruce and Scots pine among the mixed species (wooded areas hosting both deciduous trees and conifers) which thrive in that climate. Madame de Nicolaï envisioned a trans-Siberian journey during the creation of her 30th anniversary fragrance, particularly the birch employed in the composition of traditional cuir de Russie (Russian leather). She chose to utilize a smoked pine note and guaiacwood instead – the latter possessing smokiness combined with creamy lactones which soften the charred character of these woody tones. This culminates in a velvety singed woody floral, long-lasting and memorable. Madame references suede, (which does not figure among my wardrobe – so I substituted a richly textured russet-tinged leather instead to frame my lovely flacon).

Parfus de Nicolai Baikal Leather Intense review

Viktor Vasnetsov “The House of Tsar Berendey”©

Yuzu and pepper garner attention; a soupçon of spearmint as olfactory seasoning flits across your consciousness with butterfly deftness before saffron radiates its metallic warmth. Yuzu for citric bite, pepper which both spices and ‘dries’ a composition – a lovely counterpoint. Saffron foreshadows leather and illuminates all the elements like a bronzy/copper brushstroke. Baïkal Leather Intense’s heart combines several of the florals which often accompany leather, but rarely as a complete cast: rose, violet and orris butter. They provide aromatic interplay and modulation of the smoky base, further tempered very gently with its touch of tonka and white musk for added douceur. Hours into the drydown one is haunted by wafts of delicately scorched skins laced with blossoms, and this phase of development lingers indefinitely. It would be a lovely addition to opera-length suede gloves, don’t you think? Baïkal Leather Intense is a fin de siècle Russian ballroom leather translated for contemporary tastes: soigné and dashing.

Of interest, I discovered (via an historian of the era) that Russian soldiers in the 1800s would rub birch bark against their boots to waterproof them. When you consider birch tar’s use in shipbuilding, it makes good sense…

Notes: yuzu, pepper, saffron, spearmint, rose, violet, iris butter, guaiac wood, smoked pine, tonka bean, white musk

  • Congratulations Patricia! I love, Love, LOVE PdN. New York Intense is one of my favorite fragrances of all time. PdN fragrances have a strong sense of clarity, they know exactly what they want to be; the notes execute it perfectly. My nose can virtually smell this fragrance based on the review! I am in Canada.

  • I love PdN. I like Ida’s description of the scent. Can’t wait to try it. Congrats to PdN for their 30th anniversary. My favourite is NY Intense.

Thank you for the draw! I live in EU.

  • Tried my sample of MiXte before bedtime. At 2am, my sweetheart purchased a full bottle for me! This new one sounds exquisite and I can’t wait to try. Maybe I’ll get another 2 am “gift.”

    Congratulations Patricia.
I was promptly surprised and instantly knew when I tried cuir cuba, as to be one of my top favorites, baikal leather sounds wonderful, I loved the review, about the forests and the much historic Russian heritage.
    Thank you.

  • Wow, Ida really paints a picture of the Baikal mountain lakes. I was about to Birch up my boots and head for the tree line before I remembered that I’m not a member of the Russian Army. I’m in New York City and would love to be entered in the draw for this intriguing fragrance(I’m a New York Intense wearer, so how could I go wrong with one of PdN’s creations???

  • This fragrance contains the trio of my favorite floral notes, rose, violet, and iris, so I’d be interested to see how they play with the citrus and fresh elements, and later, with the smoky, leathery notes. This is a wonderful tribute to Patricia de Nicolai and the empire she has built. I live in the USA.

  • First of all, my congratulations to Mme de Nicolaï on the big anniversary! Her creations have undeniable class and deserve all the praise. I haven’t tried them all yet, but my current favourites are New York Intense and Rose Royale.

As a native Russian, I appreciate the Siberian references. Baikal Leather seems like a perfume I would try to make myself: suede, smoky pine, floral notes, and a hint of spearmint? A hundred times yes!
    I live in Russia

  • Thirty years! Congratulations! I love this house and the notes in this are so appealing. Quality fragrances without any of the pretentious “niche” marketing and prices. PdN is a class act. Can’t wait to sample this one when it is released.
    I’m in the US.

  • Ida beautifully crafted a tale of olfactory impetus and reference. I would love to try the fragrance. I am of Finnish and Russian heritage, so this scent is part of my DNA. I own and love several of Madame de Nicolai’s works. My favorites are Le Temps d’une fete, number 1, and Sacrebleu. Thank you for the drawing. I live in the United states.

  • like other Nicolai creations, Baïkal Leather Intense is an abstract creation and one cannot really predict from the name how the perfume may smell. Baïkal Leather Intense seems a friendly leather for all-year wear. I am in US. My fav. from Nicolai is New York.

  • Congrats on 30 years. Never heard of that fragrance sounds amazing though the smokey pines with the leather sounds like a must have. USA OH

  • Congratulations to PdN! I live in the US, in North Carolina.
I so liked the way the review makes the fragrance sound wild and natural, but also civilized and refined at the same time. There seem to be a lot of notes in the fragrance, but it sounds like they are combined very skillfully.

  • I’m a PDN fan. I love Ida’s description of a Siberian forest and the different woods present in the canopy. The characterization of the scent as a singed woody floral sounds wonderful for cooler weather! I live in the US

  • Congrats Parfums de Nicolaï! I love Patchouli Intense from this fabulous house. I enjoyed reading about the history of birch bark. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! USA

  • I love so many Nicolai perfumes I don’t know where to start from patchouli intense, Nicolai Fig tea to cap Neroli. I enjoyed the review and can’t wait to find this in the USA

  • isunnychaudhary says:

30 years into perfumery and still going strong, hat’s off and my heartiest congratulations to Madame Patricia De Nicolai.

I love how Ida has used such beautiful pictures to explain this artistic perfume. Yuzu, Saffron, spearmint, rose, smoked pine, Tonka beans and what not. I am amazed to know that Ida tried this house back in 1989. Wow

I haven’t tried this house before but I would love to experience the heritage and the expertise of 30 years.

I am from Atlanta, Georgia USA

  • Jeremy Francis says:

This huge cast of florals to accompany the note of leather is so tantalizing. Strength and delicacy come together in the most interesting way inside this bottle.

  • I most liked how the review explains how the florals usually accompany the leather notes but the added florals and the Tonka Touch adds Beauty to this fragrance.

  • I enjoyed most the description of the perfume notes. I live in EU. Congratulations for the 30th anniversary of Parfums de Nicolai!

  • While some PdN scents are too “traditionally original” for my taste (New York Intense is not), this one sounds it could find the right balance with modernity to catch me. And I like leather anyway, now I’m curious. – Congratulations Patricia, to your great anniversary and thank you for this draw! I’d love to win this to Germany.

  • I had the chance to test Baikal Leather and it’s such an easy to love perfume! I really like it. A lot. It would compliment not only opera-length suede gloves, but any formal dressing. I`m in EU

  • Congratulations Patricia on your 30 years anniversary! I truly love the New York Intense. What intrigues me is the combination of Yuzu and the freshness of the spearmint, bound together by the smokiness of the pine and the Russian ballroom leather. Would love to try! Living in the EU.

  • Im in the EU.
I love birch and leather together, and enjoyed the fact that the traditon of boot impregnation is part of the history behind the classic russian leather.
I have Sacrebleu and Patricia is such a queen in this industry thanks

  • I’ve seen/heard a lot about PdN, though I have yet to have the opportunity to try any of Madame de Nicolaï’s fragrances. Love Ida’s evocative description of the Baïkal Mountains! Adding that to my growing places-to-go list. Who knows, it’s not /so/ far from where I am based. I am in China.

  • Never tried a fragrance of Nicolaï before, this vision of a trans-sibirian journey intrigues me. Sibiria is one of the places on earth I’d like to visit one day, and this perfume could be some sort of starting point.

  • Sabine Mueller says:

I was mezmerised by the image of the mountainous woodlands near lake Baïkal and Ida’s descriptive journey into the uses of birch. Nice to learn about this wonderful region and its relation to the trees…..the fragrance sounds like a true adventure…. the review conjured the image of a Russian girl of about 20 years of age sitting in an opera house, wearing long suede gloves… in her mind she is roaming the Baïkal forests. With love from the German woodlands of Brandenburg

  • Wow , congratulations on the longevity. It’s always great to see good people thrive and succed.

What I liked most about review was how multifaceted it was , drawing from multiple sources to conjure up an olfactive image for us.

    I’m from Ireland.

  • Congratulations Patricia!
Ida wrote very detailed review, but I want to make my own oponion too & then compare them…
    I am in Russia

  • “Baikal Leather Intense is a Russian ballroom leather of the end of the century, designed for contemporary tastes: neat and dashing”
This little quote makes me very eager.
I like this brand perfumes are exellent and affordable, I bought and wore incense oud, neroli intense, patchouli intense and new york intense my favorite. I live in France,UE.

  • A very evocative review, thank you, Ida! As a leather lover, I can’t wait to try this. I live in Romania.

  • Madame Nicolai deserves all the accolades in the world for her work not only with this amazing brand (not a bad scent among them!) but also for her dedication to preserving historical scents! This newest creation sounds so lush with the mix of leather with rose, violet and orris butter drying down with wood and smoke. I can’t wait to try it! Thank you for featuring Patricia’s work here on Cafleurebon! I’m in the US.

  • Oh my. Ida made me want to race out and buy a bottle. or at least scour the internet for one. Maybe I’ll have to wait a couple of months til it’s released. 30 years is an eternity in the perfume world, especially unsupported by other products, absolutely an achievement. I’m in Australia.

  • Monica Beaton says:

As always – Ida’s review paints a picture so real and detailed, it’s almost possible to smell the fragrance. Congratulations Parfums de Nikolai and Madame Patricia for 30 years in an industry that is difficult and wildly fickle. I haven’t had the pleasure of sampling this house’s scents – something I will soon have to rectify. Thank you Parfums de Nicolai and CaFleurBon for such a generous giveaway and thank you Ida and Michelyn for a beautiful review.

  • Interesting idea about a celebration of 30 years of ongoing creations. Iris butter, smoked pine, pepper and white musk definitely make for a unique combination. I am from EU, thank you!

  • Good morning! I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA. What I enjoyed most about Ida’s review is the descriptiveness of the fragrance – starting with all that awesome smelling foliage in the beginning, then a teasing of spearmint, followed by pinches of other notes. Then the fact that it has one of my top 2 fragrant notes (Rose!) just makes it sound more delectable So, please, pick me, that I might be able to have the pleasure of being haunted, hourly, by wafts of delicately scorched skins laced with blossoms. Please, and thank you.

  • Sorry, I just now left a comment, and forgot to state that I have not had the pleasure of wearing a Parfums de Nicolai fragrance, which I hope will end after this draw is over
    ;-D

  • Nice review and congrats on 30 yrs. I love their New York Intense which is probably my favorite. This new creation with birch and gaiacwood sounds lovely. I like the reference to the Bikal region in Russia and I have heard a few other fragrances are inspired by this region. Thanks for the draw in the USA.

  • Congrats on 30th anniversary to Parfums de Nikolai and the motor behind it , Patricia de Nikolai
Woody , smokey Leather a bit powdery too… Sounds really good.
I had the pleasure of visiting one of Nikolai Parfemeur Createur in Paris and the one that impressed me the most was Cuir Cuba Intense . End up buying 100ml bottle for €171. Not sure if the price is still the same.
    Thank you for the generosity.

  • Congratulation Patricia for your 30th anniversary of Parfums de Nicolaï !
I have never had a chance to try anything from this brand, but Baïkal Leather Intense sounds very unique and very nice. I would be glad if I could try it. Thanks for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • “Hours into the drydown one is haunted by wafts of delicately scorched skins laced with blossoms, and this phase of development lingers indefinitely”. Love that statement Ida! It makes me want to try this beautifully sounding fragrance. Congratulations , Madame, 30 yrs!! I live in California. Thank you.

  • Great review Ida and congrats to Patricia and the house. This sounds like such a chic fragrance. The top sounds wild, but in typical PdN fashion, it’s probably perfectly blended and lush. As usual, I love Ida’s imagery and history lesson. I’m in the US.

  • Happy 30th anniversary to all connected to Parfums de Nikolai .
Spicy floral leather with woods – say no more.
My father signature scent is called New York Intense , and it’s made by Parfums de Nikolai.I do like it on guys 45 and up.
    Thanks a lot
Back and forth between USA and Scotland – 1 week in US -> one week in Scotland and so on , so basically US and Scotland (EU/UK) at the same time.

  • Congratulations PdN for your 30th year! Here’s to many more!
Would love to try this one, i love leather fragrances and PdN always gets it right on whatever they do. I am in the EU. Thanks for this draw!

  • Thank you Ida for this review!! All Nicolai’s perfumes are great, classy , so I think this new will not exception. Smokiness combined with creamy lactones and in the end floral woody notes- sound very beautiful. I like New York very much.
    from Armenia

  • Congratulations on the 30 year reign of PdN. It is a statement to the viability of your fragrances. Baikal Leather is beautifully illustrated by Ida’s review. Thank you for this and the generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Congratulations, Patricia de Nicolaï!!! Baïkal Leather sounds wonderful and definately goes on my test list – first and foremost because of the notes – everything that i love: birch tar, yuzu, saffron, rose, spearmint… But then also i love the name – first association to me (as a Soviet kid) “Baikal” is, of course, a legendary drink “Baikal”, that made of spices and herbal essences. But then there is a lake itself, a magic place i will visit one day.
Thank you for introducing to this release. I have tried only 2 fragrances from the line: Kiss me intense and Tonka Vanille, would love to try something more.
    I live in Latvia, EU.

  • Ida is always a joy to read! I especially enjoyed hearing about the Ms Nikolai’s creative departure from the traditional birch tar base. Can’t wait to sniff this. Thanks for the opportunity to be in the draw.

  • carlos_lager says:

Thank you for the great review. I recently smelled New York Intense and really loved it.
Baikal Leather sounds very interesting. You painted a beautiful picture by describing the Baikal Mountains. The notes sound very interesting. I cant wait to try this one.
Thank you for the chance of winning a bottle!
    I live in Austria (EU)

  • Congratulations Patricia and PDN. Enjoyed this read. I haven’t got the chance to try a fragrance from Parfums de Nicolaï. This is an interesting fragrance. Like to try it. Thanks, US

  • This sounds awesome in that it’s full of green notes. Those work so well in leather scents, like what you’d find in those older green leather chypres.
Congrats on 30 years. My fav from the house is Cedrat Intense.
Im in IL in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • Thank you for the wonderful review, Ida, and congratulations to Mme de Nicolaï for 30 years of marvelous creations!
I’m dreaming of trying this fragrance after reading that “hours into the drydown one is haunted by wafts of delicately scorched skins laced with blossoms”, and that “It would be a lovely addition to opera-length suede gloves”.
Thank you, I live in EU.

  • Congratulations on the 30th anniversary of Parfums de Nicolaï! What an elegant fragrance. I definitely agree that it would be paired wonderfully with opera length suede gloves!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

What a wonderful accomplish to celebrate 30 years! I’ve always been a fan of PDN–New York being my first and still more intense love from the house. This sounds wonderful–I love the idea of the floral core (orris, violet, rose) in the heart of the scent. Thank you so much for this draw! I’m in the US.

  • ……”scorched skins laced with blossoms”…….oh yes! I am very fond of Madame de Nicolaï’s creations. I too fell in love with Le Temps d’Une Fête. Madame de Nicolaï created Un Coeur en Mai for MDCI. It is in the style of Le Temps d’Une Fête and I love it also. In the US.

  • fleur d hiver says:

Wonderful review as always, Ida. As it happens, I live in Siberia, not too far (at least by Siberian standards – about an 8 hour drive) from Lake Baikal. There is a lesser known appendage of the TransSib there, called The Baikal Circle Railway, which winds around the lake through multiple tunnels in the forest covered mountains. The scenery there is particularly breathtaking in autumn, with all the beautiful foliage, the blue sky, and the clear, mirror-like lake. Your description of Baikal Leather evoked that very image for me. In fact, I’ve been on a perfume detox of sorts: no buying, no sampling, as little perfume related reading as possible, that sort of thing… but your review stirred an almost forgotten curiosity in me. It would be lovely to sample Mme de Nicolai’s creation and see how she portrayed my favorite place on Earth.

  • The smoky pine note with the guiaicwood gets my interest. That Ida has so many good things to say about this line make me want to investigate further. My favorite is Neroli Intense which I just got a sample of last week. I will have to add more to my list on my next order. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Congratulations, Madame Patricia de Nicolai and Parfums de Nicolaï on your 30th Anniversary!!! I havevnt tried

  • Congratulations, Madame Patricia de Nicolai and Parfums de Nicolaï on your 30th Anniversary!!! I haven’t tried all of your fragrances yet but I love New York Intense. Thanks, Ida, for a great article. I love this part of your description- ‘Baïkal Leather Intense’s heart combines several of the florals which often accompany leather, but rarely as a complete cast: rose, violet and orris butter.’ Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida, great review of Parfums de Nicolaï Baïkal Leather Intense. I liked the backstory on the name of the fragrance and the Baikal Mountains located in Southern Siberia. Some of notes like the smoked pine and guaiac wood in the base along with the leather and tonka bean sounds very pleasant. I don’t have a favorite Parfums de Nicolaï fragrance because I haven’t tried anything yet.  Congrats to Madame on the 30th anniversary of Parfums de Nicolaï. I am from the USA.

  • Love the imagery of the journey through Russian forests. Perfect for the veritable outdoorsman like myself. Canada.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

The notes in this have me swooning. The smokiness and creaminess make this sound not only glamorous but also comforting. I’m also interested in the addition of spearmint and yuzu and how that must create such a lovely opening. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • This review by Ida inspired me to research a trip on the Trans Siberian Railway, all the way from Moscow to Beijing. I would love to wear Baïkal Leather Intense while riding this train. I dream of seeing the endless miles of forests and stopping to stretch my legs on the platform during stops and smelling the trees and crisp Siberian air.
Congratulations, Madame de Nicolaï. I love your New York fragrance.
    I live in the USA.

  • I enjoyed how Ida created a sense of the many sides to the Russian influence in her review. I like in the US. Congratulations Patricia de Nicolai!

  • Congrats on the 30th anniversary of Parfums de Nikolai, such a milestone for independent brand .
My first encounter with Parfums De Nikolai was when i sampled New York Intense in mid 2015,and bought it right after …yes i know i was super late to the party .As a HUGE Bois du Portugal fan for many years i was impressed by the smell, quality , longevity, projection, sillage …. fantastic fragrance and a must have for me.Nothing beats it …. at this price range.
Everybody loves a good leather fragrance . Good to know Baikal Leather is not just a linear Leather fragrance, but there’s woody , spicy and floral notes too.

  • Excellent review by Ida. Parfums de Nicolaï Baïkal Leather Intense sounds like a beautiful leather fragrance that is of highest quality and a prestigious Russian ballroom. Thanks for the draw. I live in USA.

  • I love Ida’s painting and description of the Baikal mountain lakes. Congratulations Madame de Nicolaï on your 30th anniversary. I don’t have any favorite Parfums de Nicolaï.
    I live in USA.

  • I love how Ida described the nuances of each note, Metallic saffron for example. This fragrance seems like a pure joy as well. I live in the USA, ms. I celebrate with you and congrats on a great legacy. I love fig tea and New York intense . This fragrance is calling my name !

  • Happy Anniversary to Patricia! I am so glad there are perfumers with such passion to spread in this great community!

I loved the images chosen. They were so provocative and the forest photo captured really nicely the fragrant journey through Siberia that Ida was talking about.

I have yet to try any fragrances from this house. I’m in Canada.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I adore leather, birch tar, and saffron, and the idea of the three of them mingling together with the spicy bite of pepper and yuzu and the beautiful floral trio sounds absolutely heavenly. I love every cuir de Russie fragrance I’ve tried, and this sounds like it would be no exception- elegant and utterly timeless. Soigné indeed! And that’s an interesting fact about using birch tar to waterproof boots! I have yet to try a PdN fragrance and would love for this to be my first. I am in the US! 🙂

  • Congratulations to Patricia for 30th birthday of the brand she created, and for her dedication, despite her path was beset with difficulties .
Parfums de Nikolai should address one issue, they are not widely available in US. As far as I can remember from one of Sebastian YouTube videos only ZGO Perfumery caries them in the States, but California is so far away from where I live. No east coast boutique sells their fragrances , don’t know why?
Lately I’m into more mature fragrances , and Baikal Leather fits the bill. I have a feeling it was composed with thoughts of the 80’s and early 90’s , and that’s exactly why I’m excited.
I have no experience with Parfums de Nikolai, but I’d like to sample Baikal Leather, Neroli Intense Sebastian reviewed a few months back, and of course the fragrance they are known for New York Intense.
Appreciate Ida review, and the giveaway campaign.

  • Smoked pine, guaiac wood , saffron , suede leather smell – sounds interesting, but the addition of rose, violet and iris elevates my interest to the next level.

  • 30 years of making fragrances, and still have the flame in her for creating new things, and expanding? Highly dedicated woman with a chip on her shoulder. Congratulations !
To me Parfums de Nikolai equals New York Intense , period ! As a barber I always have the 250ml in my shop . Unfortunately you can’t get it in the States. Good friend of mine travels to Paris once a month , that’s how I’m getting the big boy. It’s 250ml and you get 15ml refillable travel spray actually. Price per milliliter is a lot cheaper this way.
I imagine a bit of a old school Leather fragrance , spicy, woody and smoky. It will be a nice pair with my beloved New York Intense.
    Thank you. USA

  • Excellent review Ida and I enjoyed the fact about the tar waterproofing shoes! This fragrance sounds like an amazing leather. I am a huge fan of PDN New York Intense. Happy Anniversary PDN! Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!
