Onskad is a brand  founded by of Virginie Dhoye who collaborates with three exceptional women: Léa Hiram (perfumer), Isabelle Bonnal (storyteller) and Monica Lind (illustrator). Onskad is a word derived from a combination of syllables in Swedish, meaning “the realization of a dream.” The vision was to dedicate fragrances linked to eras in contemporary history but adding modern twists: 30′ for the 1930s, 50′ for the 1950s and 80′ for the 1980s. Launched just a few months ago, Onskad offers a retrospective collection of three perfumes with names that speak for themselves: Onskad 30 ’, Onskad 50’ and Onskad 80″; three decades dear to founder Virginie Dhoye.

Just a few words about the flacons. Rectangular and black, they are adorned with illustrations reminiscent of the silhouettes found in women’s magazines, echoing the visuals of each decade. The ultimate touch of sophistication? Each perfume has its own unique cap, again a nod to the specific time period.

Onskad 30 Onskad 50 and Onskad 80 review

Onskad 30’, Onskad 50’ and Onskad 80’ – bottles ©Onskad – Collage ©Emmanuelle Varron

Onskad 50’ is a tribute to the post-war years and evokes Old Hollywood actresses and sophistication. I immediately think of Grace Kelly, Alfred Hitchcock’s muse and Princess of Monaco.

Onskad 80′ pays homage to the 80s. Madonna, Cher, and Grace Jones might have worn this over the top perfume.

Onskad 30’ refers to the 1930s and is a complex composition, at the same time woody, tobacco, leathery, floral, balmy and powdery. Onskad 30’ is gender fluid with a little muscle and yet tremendous charm. Imagine a Cuban cigar  dangling from a woman with vermilion red lips. I am immediately transported into one of Sergio Leone Once upon a time in America key scenes, where Max (James Woods) leads the character of Noodles (Robert de Niro), just released from prison, in the Speakeasy belonging to their gang. Noodles reunites with Patsy (James Hayden), Cockeye (William Forsythe), the other members of the gang; Peggy (Amy Rider), who seduced men for favors. Fat Moe (Larry Rapp) now manager of the clandestine bar… and his longtime secret love Rebecca (Elizabeth McGovern). Women wear short hair, shorts dresses and flaunt their sensuality and independence.  Cigar smoke swirls and all is hazy.

Onskad 30’s opening is unquestionably woody, with birch blending with bergamot, amyris and sandalwood.  The opening may seem masculine to some but it is perfectly gender fluid. Smooth sandalwood softens the top notes , to gradually offset the animalic and balmy facets of the styrax. This is the turning point of this perfume that invites duality: the castoreum and tobacco then come together yet the woody notes linger. These two raw materials with their strong scent profiles give way to sensual and warm amber aspects, which transports me into the world of Speakeasys. I imagine myself leaning on the bar, smoking my cigar as the bartender looks on in amazement. He offers me a drink, then two. My cigar reaches its last third, the best, the one which encompasses all its complexity and richness. This is analogous to the deft blending and beautiful balance that Léa Hiram achieves in Onskad 30’ where floral and powdery notes of rose, iris and violet mingle with the woody smoky accord. I am reminded of androgynous vintage perfumes such CARON Tabac Blond and MOLINARD Habanita.

Onskad 30’ is a marvel to wear, especially during the winter as it evokes comfort, warmth and a sensuality; playing both on the masculine and feminine codes of perfumery.

Notes: bergamot, powdery notes, amber, violet leaf, rose, tobacco notes, styrax, castoreum, amyris wood, sandalwood, birch.

Disclaimer: A huge “merci” to Virginie Doyle, founder of Onskad for the discovery set provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  • Emmanuelle, the way you describe Onskad 30′ is so evocative! I adore smoky, sexy, androgynous, very French smells like Habanita and Tabac Blond, so I’m very excited to smell this one sometime. (I also adore Sergio Leone movies.) I’d also love to smell the other two. I’m in NY, USA.

    I’d love to try it.

  • Emmanuelle’s description of Onskad 30′ was evocative, evoking the atmosphere of speakeasys, especially her comparison of a cigar’s last third to the complexity of Onskad 30′. I like tobacco fragrances and would love to try this. It was also interesting to know what the numbers signify. They all seem lovely. Thanks for the review and draw. I am from the USA.

  • The comparison to Tabac Blond caught my eye. I used to really love Tabac Blond, but can no longer wear it. Changing skin chemistry made it sit worse for the wear on me. The idea of a modern fragrance that can give me a similar vibes sounds very interesting! I live in the US.

  • I loved the imagery from the 1930s and would like to try this perfume simply to be transported to the era. I enjoy the mix of stereotypical masculine and feminine notes as well. ~Indiana, USA.

  • Seeing the first picture takes me right back to seeing the Once Upon a Time in America vhs tape always laying around when I was a kid, it’s one of my dad’s favorite movies. I’m imagining Onskad 30 would also remind me of my dad and of my childhood, smelling cigar smoke from him and his buddies’ wafting inside from the patio. I love the art on these bottles but I think the 80’s one is my favorite. I am from USA

This reviews paints such a detailed smellscape and soundscape; it makes me so long for being able to socialize in public again. Onskad 30 sounds like my kind of fragrance and I look forward to seeing what this company does in the future. I live in Vermont, US.

  • I like the fact that Onskad fragrances not only pay tribute to the past decades but also make sure to make compositions with ingredients that embody the spirit of that particular decades. Thanks for the draw. I am in USA.

  • I loved your narrative of smoking a cigar in a speakeasy! I would love to try 30’. Thank you for this review. Writing from the EU.

  • Emmanuelle! ❤️❤️ Thank you for introducing this amazing new house!! ❤️ I love that the leaders in this firm are all female, very cool! Also, as a vintage perfume lover, can’t wait to experience their takes on these historical eras! Habanita and Tabac Blond? Yes, please! I think Onskad is smartly working with one of the most interesting conundrums in perfumery: how to bring the magic of the past into the more sustainable & responsible present. ❤️ The draw is Amazing!!! A full bottle AND discovery set! Wow! Someone will be so lucky! Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to get to know Onskad! USA ❤️

  • Thank you for the lovely review Emanuelle! I heard about this brand and was curious to know more about the scents. The 30’s is probably the one I would’ve enjoyed the most as well since I love scents such as Habanita. I also love that everyone on the creative team are women! Beautiful photos as well! US

I loved the evocative image of a Cuban cigar dangling from a woman’s red lips. Love the gender fluidity. Love the comparison to vintage scents meant to be worn to cover up smoke! I also love the concept of the brand and am eager to try all of them. Last but not last, castoreum and tobacco as co-conspirators is an exciting prospect. Thanks so much for the generous draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • “woody, tobacco, leathery, floral, balmy and powdery” sounds like a music to my ear! Very beautiful and evoking review!

I like the associations with cinema that this perfume evokes in Emmanuelle, the spirit and atmosphere of that time and fragrance are immediately conveyed. It sounds elegant and very timely. I love the cinema of the thirties old Hollywood. The Women movie by George Cukor with incredibly beautiful outfits of the heroines, Ladies for Leisure by Frank Capra, DU BARRY, WOMAN OF PASSION directed by Sam Taylor, Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights, finally. There is such an irresistible atmosphere in these films that will never return. Therefore, I think the idea of creating a fragrance inspired by this time is beautiful in itself.

Notes: bergamot, powdery notes, amber, violet leaf, rose, tobacco notes, styrax, castoreum, amyris wood, sandalwood, birch. I am curious and interested in the notes especially Rose, tobacco, and violet. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Dear cafleurebon subscribers,
    Your comments touch us particularly.
Emmanuelle Varron has succeeded in translating the first 3 fragrances well. The speech used is accurate, she understood the brand’s manifesto.
The complexity of ONSKAD is to impregnate the past decades without falling into the vintage. It is above all an exercise of complex style because we improvised what would be this woman of the 30s, 50s and 80s in our time. A fantasy projection but of a great reality.
We wish you an emotional experience with ONSKAD.
The next collections to come will be just as moving, avant-garde and effervescent.
I would like to thank once again Lea Hiram (our perfumer) for having deployed her talent as a magician.
ONSKAD has the privilege to collaborate with Monica Lind (our Swedish illustrator). She immediately agreed to the project of creating unique designs that reflect each era.
It’s a chance for us to work with her, she draws for the biggest magazines and prestigious brands.
The whole team has some olfactory surprises in store for you with its next “Retrospective” collection, but this time we’re thinking of men.
The 3 future scents (smell and universe) have never been worked in perfumery.
Good luck to the two chosen in the draw and find us on social networks instagram and pinterest.
Nice sensory and olfactory journey on http://www.onskadfragrances.com

  • Onskad 30 sounds like the stuff of dreams. The slightly masculine opening which then softens and rounds up and becomes totally gender fluid sounds very appealing. It’s also a funny coincidence, since I acquired a Bandit bottle from the 70s just yesterday and I had exactly the same impression from smelling it, as I did from reading this article. Wonderful how “lady’s perfumes” were so powerful and a statement back in the day and I’m happy niche perfumery is trying to bring that back.
    I live in EU.
    Thanks!

  • I love the retro vibe, so cohesive from the scent to those gorgeous bottles! Emmanuelle took me right into a 30s film noir (I think Once Upon a Time in America actually falls closely into that category). The art work is amazing and the themes sound intriguing from this women-led house. The notes in 30′ are right up my alley, so I now have to go read about the other two, as well. What a wonderful review and draw; thank you and Onskad! NC USA

  • So great to see another new house in the market with a woman in charge, Virginie Dhoye, who hires 3 women to callaborate with her !. First time I ´ve known of perfumer Léa Hiram, but according to Emmanuelle, is a name to follow. Onskad 30’ seems to be the perfect scent to wear in winter: a lot of notes that I love and it evokes to Ms. Varron the last film of Sergio Leone: what a gang! De Niro, Woods, Pesci and the red lips of Elizabeth McGovern . I love birch ( Hyde by Hiram Green is a must), here softened by styrax and sandalwood. The image of Speakeasy is so right! The Florals ( rose, iris and violet) make the woody smoky accord turn into a beautiful balanced scent! I live in Spain, EU.

  • Wow I love the concept of this line! The more I delve into perfumes the more I’m drawn to vintage and vintage inspired fragrances. The bottle designs are gorgeous too. Habanita is amazing so I’d be thrilled to try this. Emmanuelle does a fantastic job of expressing the transportative effect of this creation. In US.

  • I really enjoyed the wonderful imagery. I particularly liked the quote “I imagine myself leaning on the bar, smoking my cigar as the bartender looks on in amazement. “. This sounds like a really easy going yet sexy fragrance.
    I live in the US.

  • Ms. Varon, “Caron Tabac Blond” is music to my ears! Your wonderful review and reference to one of my favorites scents, makes Onskad 30’ a must try for me. I’d love to try the sample set and of course, a full bottle would be glorious!
The House itself sounds amazing, such a fascinating way to approach fragrance. As a lover of vintage perfumes, these retrospective truly are the realization of a dream. I can’t wait to try them!

Would absolutely love to see the talented women of Onskad bring their vision and talents to some of the classic perfumes of the 40s, particularly Germaine Cellier’s masterpieces.

  • It has some interesting notes. Violet, rose and amber sound like a fantastic combo.
    Thanks

  • Honestlly I enjoyed most the photoshopped images of one of my favorite movies 😉 But besides that I found most interesting the comparison the perfumes to a cigar.

What a fantastic review from Emmanuelle! Very happy to have had the opportunity to learn about Onskad. I absolutely love that the name of the brand means “the realization of a dream” – how amazing is that! The concept of creating fragrances that recall past time periods is short of genius. I enjoyed reading about personas and personalities from the three eras and imagining the respective fragrances on them. I am really curious to try Onskad fragrances. Onskad 30′ sounds just gorgeous to me – I love masculine leaning, woody, smoky and animalic creations. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow! This collaboration looks amazing! I love everything about this and those bottles! Onskad 30 sounds right up my alley – woody, tobacco, unisex fragrances are the type I crave in the winter. I love your imagery of the cigar dangling from a woman’s red lips. I’d love to win this one. Thanks for the review and the draw. I’m in the US.

  • What a great visual, and I’m so glad ‘30 was the subject of this review. I love the aesthetic, the ambiance, the theme. Would love to try it out. In maryland.

  • I never heard of this house, but I am always up when it comes to discovering new things.
Please count me in for this.
I live in EU. Thank you and good luck to everyone!

  • The review really invoked the though “could this fragrance really smell like 30’s if it is unisex?”. I imagine smells in 30’s as very feminine or very masculine. I wonder how both of these combined would smell and I thank the reviewer for pointing me into this thoughts. I guess sampling is the only way to find out. I live in Poland.

  • I’m always happy to see women-driven enterprises. The talent behind Onskad is impressive and I love the way they integrated their visions. All of the Onskad offerings Emmanuelle mentioned sound wonderful. Onskad 30 seems to evoke a more elegant time with its classic floral blend and smokey wood accord. I love the bottles! MD, USA.

  • Great review of a brand I haven’t heard of until know! Onskad 30 sounds just like the perfumes I love – styrax, castoreum and birch, sounds amazing! I also love, love love the art deco artstyle of the bottles! Thank you Emmanuelle for this review! I live in Croatia, EU and I follow cafleurebon on Instagram – my handle is @il.dolce.papi

  • I love fragrances and fragrance houses with a story. In my opinion, the best products come from labors of love or where the creator is telling a story or sharing their heart through their work. Onskad seems to be doing just that. I think Emmanuelle put it perfectly by stating “…transports me into the world of Speakeasys. I imagine myself leaning on the bar, smoking my cigar as the bartender looks on in amazement”. Those types of transportive fragrances are my favorites. Ones where you get to know the creators more through the story that they are trying to evoke through the art of fragrance. Would love to try this house and LOVE the sleak and lovely bottles. Thanks for the opportunity, as always, and cheers from Illinois!

  • Oh wow, Once Upon a Time in America is one of my favorite movies. I would love to experience a scent which takes you there in person 🙂 I also love tobacco scents so sign me up, please! I live in Finland, EU

  • Another brand of perfumes and another great concept behind it. The same goes about the Onskard 30′. I like how Emannuelle captured atmosphere of the 1930s by describing the notes so vividly you and almost feel it. I also love the design of the bottle. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Hello from the UK! I enjoyed Emmanuelle’s enthusiasm. Her passion for the scent and the film was infectious and has left me curious about both. Also, the scent sounds amazing. Tobacco, leather and florals? Sign me up!

  • This review took me back to my memories about all the books about old America and the films about the United States that I saw. I can imagine it wearing during the winter days while snow is falling. I live in France, EU

  • Nice interpretation of an era, Onskad depicts those glamourous, leisure and crazy 30’ the prohibition, the good fellows , and the parties, the mood we try to imagine, since we are too young to recall, thanks for the draw, from Romania with love!

  • Great to see a perfume release from an all women team! In Emanuelle ‘s review Onskad 80 sounds quite appealing. I like that the prize is the discovery set.
    I’m in EU

  • Thanks for this interesting review Emmanuelle!

Another Swedish brand with amazing perfumes to add to my wishlist!

I love perfumes that tell the story of an era. I’m glad you mentioned Once Upon a Time in America as I could picture the scene you were referring to immediately. The cigars, the booze, the tuxedos.
Classy, but sensual with a hint of debauchery.
I would love to rewatch it and wear ’30 to really get in the mood!

    Greetings from the UK!

I enjoyed Emmanuelle’s review of Onskad 30. I loved learning about all the women behind the brand including the founder Virginie Dhoye who came up basing the fragrances off her 3 favorite decades the 30s, 50s, and 80s. The fragrances themselves as well as the bottle presentation and art portray the theme during that era. I also am a Robert De Niro fan, so I naturally was a fan of Once Upon A Time In America which is a movie that took place in the 1930s. Emmanuelle’s review of 1930 states it’s unisex and balances perfectly between the resinous tobacco masuline notes as well as the powdery floral notes. I am from the USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Emanuelle! What I enjoyed about the Emmanuelle’s review is how she describes Onskad 30′ as gender fluid – with a little muscle yet charming red lipstick – and how I can see that’s so clearly translated in the notes, with it’s masculine woody amyris and bergamot opening, softened by the more feminine sandalwood, rose, and iris, and then gradually blends into animalic nots of castoreum and styrax, which to me come off as ungendered, or rather full of the allure of both genders in all our animalic glory. I live in the US.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really loved the imagery from the 1930s and would like to try this perfume simply to be transported to the era. I enjoy the mix of stereotypical masculine and feminine notes as well. And just has so much going on (Onskad 30’ refers to the 1930s and is a complex composition, at the same time woody, tobacco, leathery, floral, balmy and powdery. Onskad 30’ is gender fluid with a little muscle and yet tremendous charm.).

  • Claumarchini says:

Thank you very much for this review, I didn’t know about this new brand and Emmanuelle has surely sparkled my interest. I like very much the idea behind these 3 fragrances, I agree that those decades are really interesting and evocative. The bottles are absolutely amazing and from Emmanuelle’s description, I am sure I would like Onskad 30!! But the discovery set would also be a treat!! Greetings from Italy

  • Great and evocative review, sounds like this brand has a lot to tell (meaning I can’t wait for what’s next) and the way you described all 3 fragrances is so accurate! Had the chance to try them all thanks to the discovery set, it took me a while to ‘get’ 50 and 80, they’re complex and beautiful don’t get me wrong but with Onskad 30, I knew I’d found the one INSTANTLY (it’s classy, sensual, intricate). Wearing it a few days proved me right, so I purchased it for Christmas.
Then, I decided to gift ONSKAD 50 to a woman who is – to me – the epitome of class, and she loved it although gifting a perfume can be tricky. She was stunned.

In a little while, I’ll probably purchase Onskad 80. It has so much character and there’s someone I immediately thought of when I smelled it.

Good luck to everyone, just thought I’d give my own experience. FR

  • Very interesting review! My favorite part has to be the edited screencap of Once Upon A Time – Sergio Leone could never! I’m very keen to get my hands on Onskad 30, as I’ve discovered a recent personal obsession with everything Tobacco. The notes and review make the fragrance seem so sultry. Wonderful writing, and thanks for the draw! I’m based in the EU – specifically Ireland.

  • I like it that this fragrance seems to be unisex. I like woody fragrances, and I like some of the other notes which are listed for this fragrance. I’ve heard of Molinard’s “Habanita” and because this fragrance might be similar in style to it, it is a reason why I’d like to try this fragrance. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • wallygator88 says:

THanks for the great review Emanuelle.

I had a hard time imagining where the scent would lead looking at the notes. Your mention of a speakeasy helped to create a visual background
