Creative director Alessandro Brun (also the co-founder of Masque Milano) is our guide on an olfactory journey to Milano, where he has placed eight perfumed “pins” in a nostalgic and highly personal scented map.

La facciata del Teatro alla Scala (1852) by Angelo Inganni

The crowning jewel of the cultural world and the heart and soul of Milan, Teatro alla Scala is one of the most (if not THE MOST) famous opera houses and has been the epicenter of the world of performing arts for the last nearly 250 years. In 1300, in the Piazzetta square near Palazzo Marino, Beatrice Regina della Scala of the noble family of Scala from Verona founded the church of “La Scala”. In 1776 the church was demolished to make way for a new theatre – as a testament to how crucially important cultural life has always been to the city of Milan. A landmark of the universal history of music, La Scala hosted countless operatic debuts: from Salieri’s Europa riconosciuta in 1778 (the theater’s opening show) to Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello (that received no less than 20 curtain calls) or Verdi’s final piece, Falstaff (whose tickets sold in 1893 to 30 times their usual price) and many of the world’s singers, conductors, performers, and directors: Paganini, Maria Callas, Pavarotti, Carla Fracci and Luchino Visconti – to name just a few.

Traditionally, La Scala’s season opens every year on December 7th, on Saint Ambrose’s Day (Milan’s patron saint) and a centuries-old tradition dictates that all performances must end before midnight, the opening night being the event many music aficionados all around the world dream of attending.  Besides the superb acoustics and the jaw-droppingly beautiful décor, what makes  La Scala truly unique is the gallery area high up, above the boxes of the theatre called the loggione – an area that housed, standing up, the less wealthy opera-goers. Some consider “the loggionne” the real soul of La Scala – responsible for broadening the reach and taste for opera beyond the elite class and for being a very vocal, visible, and immediate barometer of the audience response.

Steering away from the obvious choices to incarnate his muse for Milano Fragranze La Prima – the opera singer or the main performer, Alessandro imagines a different main character for his story and gives us the key in the fragrance’s description: “December 7th. The Milanese elite getting ready for the season-opening. A young lady in the gallery doesn’t pass unnoticed. She wants all eyes on her, she knows she can get them.”

Monica Bellucci and daughter Deva Cassel on the cover of Vogue, 2021 photo by Paolo Roversi©

After reading the perfume description, trying to “cast” the main character for this perfume, I immediately thought of the recent Vogue photoshoot with Monica Bellucci and her daughter – such a striking image of two generations mirrored in beauty and the perfect visual depiction of the very specific type of Mediterranean motherly pride of showing off your grown child to the world. I must admit, when it comes to beauty (of all forms), many of my cultural, visual, or sensorial references root from Italy (and I might be a tad subjective as it was the destination of the first trip I ever took by myself, as a young adult). Italy ties a generous knot of superlatives in my book:  the best cuisine (according to my taste), the poshest shopping place in the world (Galleria Vittorio Emanuele), the magic holiday destination (Sicily), the surreal-picture-perfect sunsets (as seen in Venice) and THE etalon for the most unapologetically self-assured and full of vitality type of beauty – that of the Italian women, no matter of their age.

Milano Fragranze La Prima

Leaving the Theatre by Carlo Carrà (1910)©

Milano Fragranze La Prima (translated as the premiere) is the olfactive interpretation of La Scala’s opening night. We are in the piazzeta, in the blue hours of the evening, people watching, following the trail of a young girl, stepping into the limelight for the first time, with the Fellini-esque  natural  but self-assured sensual attitude that  Italian women seem to be able to summon at will.  Small talk, laughter, the rustle of the crowd’s movement,  the gentlemen putting out their cigarettes with hurried gestures, inviting the ladies to come in through the entrance’s doors. Clenching her purse, our heroine checks in her coat, and – released from under the thick fabric – the aroma of her perfume adds a new layer of sensory overload to her excitement. In the top notes, the perfume smells like adrenaline-heated skin, lipstick, and sweet youth with a mixture of lively bergamot,  the spicy and flesh-like warmth of cardamom, and the exotic liquor scent of davana.

Milano Fragranze La Prima

Climbing up to the loggionne she pauses and looks around from the dizzying heights to the red and gold breathtaking setting. The elegant ladies, seated in their boxes, have begun the flutter of their belle-epoque fans while doing the who’s who, who’s sitting where eye dance. The microscopic particles of their perfumes travel, helped by the movement of the fans, from the pearl-adorned necks, up in the air, mixing in with the dust raised in the light by the slow upward movement of the red velvet curtain. The scented cloud feels like a coming-of-age of white flowers, a retro-opulent construction of old-world, old-money, familiar enough to recognize, but with an ever-new and exciting twist. As the lights slowly die down, the dissonant sounds of the orchestra warming up are raising. The magic begins. It’s a quarter to midnight and the streetlights are casting trembling long shadows of the statue silhouettes in the piazzetta. She carefully steps in the fresh snow, aware of a strange new smell that has followed her since leaving the Opera. Her thick tweed coat has borrowed the scent of the furs pressed next to it in the cloakroom: foreign and yet comforting and unnervingly familiar, sweet, musky, and deep.

An extroverted and sensual floral scent with a retro sensibility and an opulent fur accord, Milano Fragranze La Prima is the perfect choice when daydreaming of a no-travel-restriction-winter. It is your scented ticket to the evening of the 7th of December 2021 in Milan, Italy.

Top: Bergamot, Cardamom and Davana, Heart: Orange Blossom,  Osmanthus, Jasmine, Base: Fur Accord, Vanilla

  • This trip to La Scala’s loggione and incursion into Italian symbols (or what they mean or how they speak to the world) was truly fascinating. Indeed, the charm of Italy, Italian women, people, style and tradition is unique and unrepeatable. Perhaps not as “posh” as the elegance of other peoples, but definitely sensual, warm, real and soaring with life.
La Prima seems to combine the two: elegance and vitality. Fur, dust and a retro vibe laid on opulent, pulsing white flowers, cardamom and vanilla.
    I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • Milano Fragranze La Prima comes across as quite a mysterious composition. It is effervescent but also has lipstick vibes. It also seems to pay tribute to classical compositions. I am in US.

Masque Milano is one of my favorite brands and I am really excited abut this one. Nicoleta’s review is very interesting. I really enjoyed learning about Teatro alla Scala and the inspiration for La Prima. Nicoleta really perfectly paints the picture of this intriguing woman going to the premiere at La Scala. Very well written. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Nicoleta, thank you! This wonderful character, story, & historical place came alive in your review! I’ve been wanting to try Milano Fragranze’s Naviglio, Cortile, and La Prima for some time! ❤️ I’m fascinated to experience how they’ve created a fur accord using vanilla & ambergris. I love how Nicoleta describes this fragrance as “opulent.” I would love to wear this while watching an opera from home this winter (fingers crossed, perhaps even attending one in person?). Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! USA

  • Nicoleta’s review was wonderful! I love the image of the woman wearing the perfume that she conjures. It captures the feeling of the fragrance more than a simple rundown of the notes ever could. Cheers from NC, USA.

  • I cannot wait to try this elegant scent. The davana and cardamom notes sound most interesting to me. ~ Indiana, USA

I love a good retro floral chypre, especially anything with a fur accord. This review makes me want to get all dressed up and head to the theater! Thank you for the history and sharing your experience in Italy. I too think Italian women are some of the most naturally gorgeous and I can picture them wearing La Prima after reading this. Thank you for the draw. I’d love to own a bottle of this. US

  • It is the first time I hear about this house, but I see that they have interesting perfumes and I really like the concept behind them.
Thank you for the draw! I am in the EU and it would be wonderful to get the chance to try La Prima.

  • I would love to try this because I love the scent of cardamom and I feel like it’s not used in this way very often. Plus who can ignore anything involving a photo of Monica Bellucci, who has been my style icon for years. And how lovely is her daughter! I live in the US

  • Love this review, story. The Opera & Milan Italy. I felt I was there .. The fragrance sounds wonderful. Nicoleta took me to another place. This fragrance house is something I definitely want to explore.. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • constancesuze says:

La Scala was one of the best parts of a largely difficult trip to Milan I took a few years ago (something about getting mugged, running out of money, and being locked out of my phone), and it was an absolutely sublime experience. It was live music rather than opera, and being in one of those boxes was such a beautiful, transportive experience. Would love to smell a perfume that captures that.
    In the US

  • Totally captivated by Nicoleta’s review. She masterfully captured a highly informative facet and dwells into a poetic, symbolic depiction of the inspiration for the fragrance. Since I live in a county that borders Italy, I am fortunate enough to have had many opportunities to experience “Italian beauty” and way of life.

    Greetings from Slovenia.

  • What an opulent cinematic image, the choice of Monica Belluci and her daughter as timeless italian beauty is a strong image, Milano Fragranze La Prima seem to be an embodiement of such bare efortless glamour! Thanks for the review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • jmmcmenamin says:

I could feel the anticipation of opening night! I loved the history shared – from
La Scalia’s traditional opening on December 7 to the loggione’s role in making opera accessible to all to the description of the patrons.

    Toi! Toi! Toi!

  • Interesting history of La Scala and the reasoning behind the Dec 7th opening night. I’m very curious what a fur accord might smell like. A beautiful picture you’ve painting with words, Nicoleta. In the USA.

  • doveskylark says:

Nicoleta’s review perfectly captured the opulence and extroverted quality of La Prima. I loved the way Nicoleta imagined opening night at La Scala. I felt the energy and anticipation of this event , as well as the way the fragrance is built and the way it develops. I was transported to Milan. I also enjoyed browsing around the Milano Fragranze website. What a tribute to the stately city of Milan!

Masque Milano is a brand that is dear to me, so I am curious to see how Alessandro Brun has put his creativity into this other house, if the fragrances resemble or if he chose a different approach.

  • I liked the description of the lady leaving the opera smelling her tweed coat that has aquired a unfamiliar scent of fur. Milano Fragranze is a new brand to me. Thanks for the opportunity to try this fragrance. Mich USA

I loved this review! I could see this beautiful woman, the inspiration, traveling to her seat. I love the thought of her traveling to her seat, with her fragrance trailing and reaching out to the audience. I love your description of the adrenaline-heated skin, lipstick, and sweet youth. This sounds fantastic! Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the US.

  • sephrenia300 says:

What a stunning review, Nicoleta! What sparks my interest the most is the description of that perfect time-and-place that La prima is meant to embody – the joie de vivre of Milan, the opulence of La Scala on opening night, but also the innocence of it seen through fresh new eyes, and the egalitarian spirit behind the creation of the loggionne. I have not had the thrill of attending an opera at La Scala but I have been to one in it’s sister house, La Fenice in Venice, and the opulence and grandeur is indescribable. A great inspiration for a truly luxurious perfume. I live in the US.

  • That was a very charming trip to La Scala of Milan by Nicoleta Tomsa, while reviewing Milano Fragranze La Prima. I felt as if I were there, and for a no restriction, free vacation, this review was a tour de force indeed. The beauty of Milan, La Scala, belle epoque culture, lovely Italian ladies, were all captured so skillfully in words, which makes me want to experience the same in its olfactory rendition in Milano Fragranze La Prima. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. I am in the USA.

  • realtyisme says:

OMG! Nicoleta’s review transported me to this young lady’s moment in time. The sensory items depicted in this review, allowed me to feel, and even imagine the scents that envelop the depiction of La Prima. Well done…Bravo! Just yesterday, I had the privilege of putting my nose to one of Milano Fragranze’s other scents in this line (Naviglio). While Naviglio is a fragrance that will be added to my collection, I believe, I must first prepare my entry into this fabulous collection via, La Prima, by making it my “premiere” acquisition. Nicoleta, thank you for the brief journey I was able to experience today through your literary gift. Very much appreciated :). Located in Pennsylvania, US.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

ah! cardamom! One of my favorite notes. What a dreamy review, it sounds like just a waft of this could boost someone’s confidence. I’m not as beautiful as Monica Bellucci or her daughter but maybe this fragrance could help me fake it a little. I’m in California, USA.

  • What an intriguing story line for a beautiful perfume. I love the idea of the fur accord. I enjoy a slightly animalic scent. In maryland.

  • Trinity33 says:

I love the visuals of opening night at La Scala with the theatre-goers milling about, scents intermingling and an elegant lady leaving with the olfactory experience of the opera lingering. Monica Bellucci is a beautiful Italian woman to see in this role. The floral notes sound sumptuous and the fur accord sounds fun. I’m in MD, USA.

I’ve been to Italy 4 times so far and yes, I realize what Nicoleta means by with the “Fellini-esque natural but self-assured sensual attitude that Italian women seem to be able to summon at will”. I was in Milan, I was in Rome, Sicily and Sardinia. I would gladly return to the winter fashion capital for an exclusive show at Teatro alla Scala.

The pyramid seems to have all my favorite notes together, so I would love to have a chance to smell it. Please count me in, I am based in Europe!

I was once lucky enough to visit this beautiful opera house Teatro alla Scala in Milan. I was very impressed and overwhelmed by the interior decoration, so I got goosebumps from Nicoleta’s review as the memories came back to me. It would be very interesting to try the perfume, as the white flowers and the retro construction of the scent are also associated with the atmosphere of the theater. An interesting weaving of davana into this composition, and the fur accord for me is something completely new and beautiful!

La Prima sounds heavenly in its opulence, elegance and retro vibe. Nicoleta’s depiction of the young lady’s visit to the most prestigious opera house in the world feels spot on and feeds the imagination with beautiful imagery. Milan is one of the most beautiful and full of life sites in the world. It comes to no surprise to me , that Alessandro Brun new line is dedicated to important places, and events in his home town.
La Scala everyone should see, even if you’re not opera fan.
The one thing that differ the most from literary ANY opera in the world the way loggione works, and adds to the whole experience. Loggione is not just a place where not so wealthy opera lovers can enjoy the performance, it’s a place you can freely express your feelings. Unlike any other opera, you can not just applaud, and cheer , but also scream, call names if you don’t like the performance. It’s like a football game (soccer) , personal experience! Booing is common, and the reason some some singers refusing to perform there.
I’ve spent close to two years in Naples, and i can say the country, and Italian women are of the most colorful, lively, loud and also chaotic worldwide. Pretty absolutely, but unlike Nicoleta don’t find Italian women them sensual.
La Prima with lively bergamot, cardamom, davana , and musky sweetness you can call sensual, but I have a feeling there’s some level of unpredictably and chaos in it too.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • I tried this fragrance, for the first time, today, and I like it. I think that it’s unisex. To me, it is a good use of florals and bergamot, and it is sweet. I wish that it would have better overall performance than it does, but it is enjoyable and I want to own a bottle of it. I agree with Nicoleta that this fragrance has a sensual floral scent. I only have a sample of it, and I’d love to own a 100 ml. bottle of it. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I loved reading about the history of La Scala and the heroine at the opera. I live in the United States. Thank you.

  • Beautiful! I loved the association with the picture of Monica Belluci and her daughter. I could totally picture being there on opening night! The buzz, the excitement, and the atmosphere. The osmanthus really caught my eye in the list of notes. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • My favorite Masque Milano fragrance is L’Attesa , coincidence or not , I’m wearing it right now.
It’s was nice learning even more about Alessandro Brun new project called Milano Fragranze , and particularly La Prima. Cozy welcoming fragrance , with musical background.
I like how Nicoleta took us to a journey , not only to La Scala, but to Italy itself, and her views of Italian beauty, culture and way of life.
Not to forget the importance of La Scala’s opening night , for Italy , Milan and us , the Cafleurebon readers .

I can never stop sharing how much I love Masque Milano and now Milano Fragranze!! Their perfumes are simply masterpieces, so well constructed and beautiful, and being from Milan myself I have appreciated so much this new line that celebrates our beloved city. I have sampled all 8 fragrances and La Prima is definitely my favourite: the floral heart is simply mesmerising and perfectly embraced by the spicy head and the musky base…you couldn’t ask for more in a perfume! In addition, persistence is amazing, and since my skin literally eats perfumes, if it stays all day on me it means that one could enjoy this wonderful scent throughout the whole day. Hope to meet all in Milan soon! Ciao!

Sych variety of fragrances , good looking bottles, more than fair prices (checked online) , nice start .
Through Milano Fragranze people outside of Italy can learn about Milan , and its rich city culture , historical sightseeings , and the importance of the famous La Scala. It was interesting learning about the origin of the opera, and the loggione area.
I’ve been to opera events twice before, and not in Italy, so I don’t know about Mediterranean motherly pride , and the glamor on December 7th, but Nicoleta story reminded me of eating Orange, cardamom cake with orange-blossom yoghurt (if you prefer Yogurt) , in a field of flowers.
Appreciate learning about La Scala , and the giveaway campaign

Milano Fragranze I can’t go wrong with , quality ingredients, it’s well made confirmed by both Steven and Michelyn in the previous giveaway, now by Nicoleta too.
It’s also made by a nose i like Violaine Collas .
Never been to La Scala myself, what I found different is that it’s not just a place where so called upper class rich people can show off their super expensive jewelry, clothes and so on , but also there’s room for real opera aficionados.
Every young woman, Italian or not wants all eyes on her , we all went through such periods of our lives 🙂
I have not sampled the new Alessandro Brun project yet , but i adore Russian Tea – my favorite Masque Milano fragrance.
Thank you Nicoleta , Cafleurebon and Milano Fragranze

Thanks, Nicoleta! The character, story, and place came alive in your wonderful review! I’m interested to experience how they’ve created a fur accord using vanilla & ambergris. Nicoleta described La Prima as “opulent” which inspired me to love wearing it while watching an opera. Thank you so much for this unique opportunity! BiH

  • The concept behind Milano Fragranze i like a lot. The price point is great, blue bottles are eye catching, unique stores behind each and every fragrance, I have a feeling that bright future is ahead of the brand.
I’ve been to Milano dozens of times , of course I’ve visited La Scala, not once, but three times.
It’s such a famous tourist attraction, it was surprising to hear there’s a fragrance inspired by it. There’s a museum to it , workshops, behind the scenes tours. If you visit both the opera spectacle, and behind the scenes like I did you’ll know the whole story , not just the shiny and glamor one. It’s not cheap, but it’s one of a kind experience.
Young woman are so adventurous nowadays, they want the looks, and how to get them. Both Monica Bellucci and her daughter look spectacular.
Familiar, sweet and musky opulent fragrance, with modern twist, sounds lovely to me.
    Thanks for the draw
