Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather Review (Aurélien Guichard) + A Daring Adventure  Draw

Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather review

After more than a year as a Harrods exclusive, Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather has finally become widely accessible to perfume lovers who are always on the lookout for new, and remarkable, leather fragrances. Consistently to the French House’s concept of showcasing the various facets of exceptional raw materials, Falcon Leather (composed by Takasago Senior Perfumer and brand founder Aurélien Guichard) is an intense leather-centered composition of gender-fluid charm, built around a complex, powerful, albeit vegetal ingredient: Birch Tar from Finland.

Birch tar has been used as a component of leather accords for many decades now, especially of the “Russian leather” ones (in Russia, birch oil was used for tanning animal hides, while birch bark was being rubbed onto soldiers’ boots to make them waterproof – in both cases, the aroma left an imprint on the leather). Moreover, as a fragrance ingredient, birch tar possesses its own smoky/leathery aromatic properties. To meet the IFRA safety standards, the raw material undergoes rectification: the tree parts are crushed, and then go through a long, dry distillation process. The birch tar’s smell is as dark as its appearance: the only time I’ve had the chance to sniff one of its varieties, it brought to mind the odor of burnt wood, along with a pungent, raw leather-reminiscent vibe of smoked meat. The truth is that the desired tar-like effect in leather fragrances is often obtained by the use of aromachemicals, like isobutyl quinoline. For Falcon Leather, however, Aurélien Guichard opted only for natural, high-quality birch tar, thus highlighting the material’s fascinating nuances and delivering a leather scent of captivating evolution.

Falcon Leather for MATIERE PREMIERE

The perfumer was inspired by the highly textured smell of falconry gloves and aimed to evoke both their grainy, rough leather side, and their smooth, suede-like one. I’m glad to report that he has fully succeeded in realizing his intention, for Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather is a marvel of harmonically co-existing dualities. Furthermore, M Guichard expertly transformed his star, plant-derived ingredient into a fully satisfying, well-rounded leather note that is not devoid of animalic undertones. The fragrance opens with a robust, virile leather accord that is bound to turn heads: the birch tar shines in all its phenolic, smoky/woody glory, its wildness paradoxically both tamed and accentuated by the warmth of saffron and the leathery beauty of labdanum; meanwhile, its charred woodiness is boosted by mystical oud and earthy patchouli, with some clove-like spicy touches. The composition significantly mellows as soon as the balsamic sweetness of the amber accord emerges: lactonic benzoin and creamy vanilla interact with the ever-present labdanum, transforming the initially raw leather into buttery, sophisticated suede. The fragrance evolves from primordially carnal to deliciously sensual, making its long journey on the skin thoroughly exciting. For those who enjoy layering fragrances, let it be noted that Falcon Leather is an excellent choice (it paired beautifully with Matiere Premiere Neroli Oranger and Radical Rose).

Best leather perfumes for women

Wearing Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather, I couldn’t help but think of all the wonderful 1920s-1930s androgynous fragrances featuring leather notes, evergreen beauties like Chanel Cuir De Russie, Caron En Avion or Lanvin Scandal. As a woman, I was at total ease with the scent’s more overt (compared to the aforementioned fragrances) virility; not only did it not antagonize my own sense of femininity, it enriched it with an interesting edge – the fragrance felt liberating to wear. I can perfectly imagine pioneering aviatrix Amelia Earhart sporting Falcon Leather: her lambskin jacket and self-confident smile on, ready for one more daring adventure in the skies.

Officially listed ingredients: Saffron, Labdanum, Birch Tar, Oud, Benzoin.

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank Matiere Premiere for my bottle of Falcon Leather. The opinions are my own.

Layering fragrance is something I’m interested in, but I never know which scents, other than a solifleur, to start with. I’m glad this was identified as a good one to layer.
Bond No 9 Chinatown is one of my all-time faves, so I like that the nose behind it is the same as the nose behind this scent. In Louisiana, USA.

“The fragance felt liberating to wear” great review By Despina, perhaps in my opinion the conjunction of birch tar and saffron, would be like a bit of fresh paint, perhaps?
I can imagine those gloves and airplane smell, I’m not familiar with with Matiere Premiere, Mr Guichard sounds familiar, I have tried and admired Robert piquet creations. I live in the USA

  • I liked the historical note in Despina’s review of Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather about the use of leather in perfumes and how it is created. Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather seems to be an intriguing scent, with few notes, but interesting ones. I would love to try it. I haven’t tried anything by the listed brands. I love oud and it will be interesting to see how it sits with the other listed notes, especially birch tar. Thanks for the review and generous draw. I am in the USA.

Another great review. I’m a big fan of leather fragrances an really love the mentioned fragrance: Chanel Cuir de Russie.
Thank you for the draw. Greetings from the EU

  • Didn’t know that soldiers used birch bark to make their footwear waterproof! In scouts, my brother and I used it to keep a diary. Great stuff to write on if you’ve got a reliable dark pen. But the nuances in Falcon Leather sound truly remarkable, never having sampled natural birch tar myself. Always been a fan of adding a bit of clove to a leather scent too, so I’m very happy to hear Despina mention it. Ditto with its robustness for layering. If Cuir de Russie came to mind, you KNOW it’s a goodie. Love the sense of liberation at the end! I can see why it was a Harrod’s exclusive. Haven’t sampled anything from MP yet, but I’m certainly familiar with Guichard’s Intense Oud for Gucci. Excellent designer fragrance. Dying to try Trussardi’s Uomo from the Levriero Collection too. We’ll skip over Versace Eros shall we? LOL Apparently many brands don’t feel the same. Just replace the words “skip over” with “copy” eh? Ahh the cost of success. A great article! From Canada.

  • I am lucky to have all the vintage leather perfumes mentioned in the article i.e. Chanel Cuir De Russie, Caron En Avion or Lanvin Scandal. I am glad Falcon Leather uses birch tar though the cleaned version to comply with IFRA regulations. If it pays tribute to proper leather fragrances of the past, it must be an impressive composition. I am in US.

Great article! It’s kind of mind blowing to think about how technical perfumery is. Really under-appreciated art. I’m not familiar of the house but do love Chinatown by Bond No. 9! In the USA.

  • Trinity33 says:

I have a small vintage decant of Chanel Cuir de Russie and I love it for its complexity and confident androgyny. I’m really interested in the use of naturally derived birch tar for the leather note, I love layering and I can see adding scents with rose and iris notes to add dimension. I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiere but I have a bottle of Bond No 9 Chinatown. I’m in MD, USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Loved the idea of labdanum turning this smoky, raw initial leatheriness into smooth suede. The whole review (and art direction) was lovely. Not familiar with this brand and, of the scents mentioned, I’m most familiar with Chinatown. Thank you for the draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Despina! What a wonderful review! ❤️ Just this morning I was listening to an interview with Aurelien Guichard! I’m interested in fragrances that don’t fall into the expected top/mid/dry-down structure and am preparing to order some Matiere Premiere samples! I love that Guichard uses the bottles of the perfume development process as a visual signal of his drive to keep expression raw, textured, and understandable for the buyer. Guichard’s focus on sourcing, insistence on quality of the star ingredient, and articulation of all its bearings & postures is stirring! I can’t wait to try Radical Rose, etc. As for Falcon Leather, what a gorgeous concept! ❤️ I think of saddles when it comes to vegetable-tanned leather (rather than gloves which I associate with chrome tanning, though I’ve never had to protect my hands from falcon talons). I would absolutely Love to experience Falcon Leather! Who wouldn’t delight in the expert handling of birch tar from Finland in this scent. If it is anything like the leather fragrances of the past (perhaps more polite due to IFRA) I will adore it! Thank you for this opportunity! USA

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I enjoyed reading how this fragrance was inspired by the scent of falcon’s gloves. Never smelled them, but I can understand the appeal. Also, choosing Amelia Earhart as the ultimate spokeswoman for this fragrance was cool as well. I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiere fragrances, but this sounds like a fun one to start with. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I am a fan of leather fragrances, and remember sniffing my father’s leather gloves as a child. I like the photo of Amelia Earhart in her plane. I do enjoy Parco Palladiano XIII: Quadrifoglio Bottega Veneta created by Aurélien Guichard. Thanks for the opportunity to try Falcon Leather. Mich USA

  • AleksCipri says:

Wow Falcon Leather excites me! I love the sound of from Despina’s review. I find the intro about birch tar particularly interesting. I didn’t know it was one of the IFRA regulated substances. I do like the smell of birch tar in fragrances, but not when it is too overpowering. Falcon leather sounds really good very leathery and raw but mellowed down to sweeter softer suedey notes. Gotta love that. I did not know about Matiere Premiere fragrances (something new to explore yay!). I know about Aurélien Guichard, but from all of his work I have only tried (and loved) Armani Privé Bleu Turquoise. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • “As a woman, I was at total ease with the scent’s more overt (compared to the aforementioned fragrances) virility; not only did it not antagonize my own sense of femininity, it enriched it with an interesting edge – the fragrance felt liberating to wear.”

Very well said Despina, thumbs up
    Wear what you like .
Falcon Leather is intriguing leather fragrance I’ll try in the Fall. Ruff opening, and suede leather base with some resins, and vanilla adding more depth to the composition.
Matiere Premiere Encens Suave I’ve smelled. I do know Aurélien Guichard , he is a famous perfumer.Gucci Intense Oud i own , he made most Robert Piguet fragrances, including the rejuvenated Visa , most Narciso Rodriguez female fragrances are his work too , and so on.
    Another good opportunity

  • Thank you Despina. I loved your description of the dual feel of the leather in Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather and it sounds lovely. I’ve not yet tried any of Aurélien Guichard’s creations but I’ll certainly be on the lookout now. I’m in USA

  • Very interesting concept for a fragrance! I love it and it makes perfect sense to me – leather juxtaposed with the airy freedom of a bird. Amazing. I enjoyed the nod to Amelia Earhart! Unfortunately I am not familiar with the work of this house or perfumer. Thank you from Canada!

  • I have heard and read about this house of Aurelien Guichard before, but never really got the chance to sample them. An acquaintance was praising very high the rose one – Radical Rose.
As for Falcon Leather, I do enjoy those notes and I am sure that I will enjoy the creation overall if I were to win.

Thank you! Reading and commenting from the EU.

A wonderful piece by Despina has got me curious to find out more about. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Laurentiu says:

I am intrigued by Falcon Leather as it is a strong reminiscent factor for the iconic fragrances of the 20s and 30s: Scandal, Cuir de Russie from Chanel, En Avion…
I do like fragrances that have a vintage vibe. Thanks!

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

A fabulous and intoxicating perfume, this contains many facets of my own life. It excites and initiates my times as a trainee Falconer of those precious moments where I am honoured to be in a tentative partnership with my birds. Moments of a glimpse into the wild and untamed nature, sheer force and beauty of these birds. My glove is the point of contact of the 2 worlds and Aurelian has captured their essence so perfectly. Despina’s descriptive powers perfectly encapsulated this beautiful perfume, Thank you, I would be thrilled to own a bottle. Living and flying free in SW France

  • macaroni023 says:

This sounds like such a perfect leather! Wow! I was intrigued to learn about birch tree because it is a very native tree where I live, and the reference to Amelia Earhart is so on point, I imagine this perfume would suit her very well. I have heard about Aurélien Guichard but never had a chance to try any of his works and as for Matiere Premiere my favorite one is Parisian musc. Thank you for your generosity and good review, I am super excited about this draw! I am from EU, Lithuania

  • I liked Despina’s review of Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather and her introduction of birch tar, an ingredient that I love and rediscovered when Hiram Green launched Hyde. I didn´t know that in Russia birch oil had those uses. I am glad Aurélien Guichard opted for this natural material with its fascinating nuances( I love the medicinal quality of birch tar) and he uses Labdanum to get refinement and achieve a leathery beauty and at the end, the creamy vanilla provides the inherent sweetness of tanned leather. Great work. I’m not familiar with with Matiere Premiere and I love Carven Paris Alexandrie, where Mr. Guichard, made a modern violet centered chypre. I am in Spain, EU.

  • I loved Despina’s article! I enjoyed the description and picture of birch tar. It is a note I am familiar with but did not know anything about. Unfortunately, I have yet to try any fragrances from Matiere Premiere or Aurelien Guichard, although Bond no. 9 Chinatown has been on my short-list of fragrances to try for a while now! Cheers from NC, USA,

  • I like Despina really enjoy overtly masculine scents on menor other women. This animalic tarry leather thus sounds wonderful. I know and like Robert Piguet Visa by Aurelien Guichard.

A lot of people are talking about Matiere Premiere on Instagram, and YouTube, I’m still new to the brand.
Falcon Leather starts like a wild man, and then turns into gentleman. I’m more comfortable with its second buttery, sophisticated suede part .
Birch Tar is still use in shoe making by the way.
My scent of the day is Zadig&Voltaire This is Him,yes I know Aurélien Guichard.
Thanks to Despina and Matiere Premiere

First time I hear about this brand. Good to read about little connected history to leather from 1920 upto now. This fragrance will give you nostalgi. I am in Sweden EU

  • Despina’s description of birch tar was fascinating. Also the way she describes the sensuality of this fragrance is beguiling. I have sniffed Chinatown and it is amazing. I didn’t realize that Aurelien Guichard created all of these! Wow. I am in the US.

  • I was drawn to Despina’s evocation of the great leather scents of the 1920s, as I am a big fan of another of them: Knize Ten. Falcon Leather sounds gorgeous. I have no experience with either Guichard’s work or Matiere Premiere fragrances. Hopefully this draw will change that! I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for your generosity.

  • Rachel Part 2
(Been thinking about this and just wanted to say an extra Bravo! to M Guichard & Despina)
Much marketing (storytelling, even the briefs, imho) are fanciful, but I’m very impressed with the concept here. It does seem to derive from the material, express histories & create experiential meaning (I MUST try this house). The more I learn about birch, tanning, & falconry the MORE it makes sense (usually these stories melt away on the winds of research). Smart, too, for appealing to markets that can propel one’s art. The story is intellectual and real – true to the materials (though, where do intellect & senses begin & end?). Concept + material (if it is True like this), how powerful. Looking forward to experiencing M Guichard’s work. Thank you again CaFleureBon!

  • petergigov says:

Falcon Leather opening sounds a bit hairy-chested, but mellows into sensual resinous suede leather.
Aurélien Guichard i know for his Uomo Salvatore Ferragamo , Unforgivable Sean John and especially Gucci Intense Oud .
    Nice giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I love the idea of layering this scent. I personally really love the smoking intense scent of birch tar. I find it comforting. In maryland.

  • Danny Constantinescu says:

“The fragrance evolves from primordially carnal to deliciously sensual”. THIS COMMENT. Just perfect. I am very familiar with Mr Guichard’s work, having bought the sample pack and buying Falcon Leather blind from the Harrods website during lockdown.
Funny story, but more like painful funny than haha funny, I HAD Falcon Leather for about 2 weeks AND managed to get a photo on Instagram, only for the bottle to suffer an untimely death (read smashing) at the hands of my very curious but physically uncoordinated 8yrs old boy. Bois D’Ebene, Encens Suave, Radical Rose and Falcon Leather are the stand outs for me. I live in London, UK.

  • I like the sound of this scent because I enjoy leather fragrances and I am especially intrigued because this one emphasizes the animalic aspect. I have been reading a lot about vintage perfume recently, so I’m glad the article cited a link to classic perfumes, including Caron En Avion, which I just happened to read about the other day. I am not familiar with this house, nor well versed in this perfumer’s creations, but the quality of both sounds terrific. I live in Connecticut in the U.S. Thank you for the article and the chance to win a bottle!

  • Dubaiscents says:

This scent sounds wonderful, I love the idea of using a Falconer’s glove as the inspiration. So often leather from saddles or jackets or even ladies suede gloves but I haven’t see one for a falconer glove. I remember going to a huge falconry event in Abu Dhabi where people came from around the world to showcase their birds and their various cultural uses for falconry. The variety of the gear and costumes was amazing. I also really enjoyed Despina’s explanation of birch tar and where it comes from. I have own several scents from Aurélien including Visa and Chinatown and Knightsbridge. I’d love to add this one to my collection as well. Thank you for the chance. US.

  • I love what I’ve smelled of Mr Guichard’s work, even the pieces for Ego Facto!! I loved Despina’s comparisons to the vintage leathers which we all know and admire, and I am excited to be introduced to Matiere Premiere’s line. I live in Canada.

  • Matiere Premiere I’m not familiar with, but I like complex fragrances, with a lot of depth. Falcon Leather is leather fragrance with a character.
The way it starts may be just a bit aggressive, but you can’t go wrong with balsamic sweetness , lactonic benzoin and creamy vanilla
Aurélien Guichard = Salvatore Ferragamo Uomo and Gucci Intense Oud .
    Thanks for the draw
USA, and Germany from time to time

  • I really enjoyed the education about birch tar and it’s uses in leather. Always been a big fan of the “how it’s made” type shows and I definitely got those vibes reading the article. Not familiar with Matiere Premiere fragrances or Aurélien’s work but I’ve been seeing Falcon Leather everywhere. Fun fact; I’ve actually met a Master Falconer along with his hunting bird and it was one of the coolest things EVER! Thanks for the opportunity and greetings from Illinois.

Thank you Despina for such an interesting article! I didn’t know that birch bark was rubbed on soldiers’ boots to make them waterproof.
My grandmother is from Russia, I often went to her as a child, the birch forests there are really beautiful, they have some specific national beauty.
I love leather fragrances (I’m literally just bought TF Tuscan Leather two days ago) and that “wildly” feeling they sometimes can brings.
The transformation with creamy vanilla from raw leather to buttery deliciously suede – exited me the most. I like when leathery compositions can play different directions with notes, but not just stay monotonous.
Falcon Leather sounds impressive, especially the combination of leather and birch tar – highly complements my curiosity.
Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiere fragrances and/or Aurélien Guichard’s work, but I’m so ready to change that.
Thankful for this interesting article and for a draw!

I loved finding out about birch tar and the culture that surrounds it. It sounds like a note I would thoroughly enjoy wearing. I see there are only five notes listed, which I like because it makes it easier to pick out the different components of the scent. Oh, wow, I am a big fan of Finnish birch tar and didn’t know a perfume similar to the scent! Good to see saffron, labdanum, benzoin etc. in it, too, sounds like my cup of tea. I like experimenting with layering, too.
The most interesting in the review was the idea of contrasting textures (or rather harmonically co-existing dualities): grainy, rough leather side and smooth, suede-like one.
Not sure if I am familiar with any Aurelien’s creations, but would like to know more.
I am from the EU, thank you for the draw!

  • Delspina’s embracing of the virility of the fragrance as a complement to her feminity was refreshing. We aren’t all one note, right? I’m also really curious about the natural birch tar aspect. I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiere, but am with Chinatown (the drydown is amazing). NC, USA

As always, I really enjoyed Despina’s article, full of interesting facts, curiosities and information about history, perfumery, noses, and evocative at the same time. Layering is something I would love to try but never dare, so I also liked the suggestion about how to layer Falcon Leather. I am not familiar with Matiere Premiere but have read so many interesting and enthusiastic reviews that I would love to be able to try this scent. I have only tried Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez from M. Guichard and I loved it. Greetings from Italy

  • I enjoyed learning about birch tar and its use in perfumery. I also enjoyed learning about this fragrance; I think that I would like this one. I’ve tried a “leather” fragrance which was too synthetic. I think that this fragrance would be a good way for me to enjoy a leather-smelling fragrance because of the natural way of causing it to smell like leather. I am somewhat familiar with, perfumer, Aurelien Guichard’s works. I live in MD., U.S.A.

Great review! Im not familiar with any of the perfumer’s work but i am a sucker for leather fragrances. I really enjoyed learning that they use raw materials and the lesson on birch tar and “russian leathers”. Thank you for this opportunity. I live in Hawaii, USA.

  • Despina take on Falcon Leather reminded me of eating slightly burned Saffron Cake , while sitting on a suede leather couch.
Matiere Premiere i don’t know, but Gucci Intense Oud I bought because of Steven reconditioning it , Salvatore Ferragamo Uomo i also have. Aurélien Guichard Matière Première fragrances I’ll try next.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Despina described this fragrance as absolutely mesmerizing. Both leather and suede, with a touch of birch finally rounded up by an amber accord and labdanum. Sounds like a “serious”, yet reviving perfume.
As for Aurelien Guichard, he is an excellent nose that has created some of my favorite frags: Narciso Poudre, Gucci Guilty, Pleats Please, as well as Petit Fracas, that I adore.

    Thanks!

A wonderful review that dives into the history and science of the leather accord. I love fragrances with a prominent leather note but only if it’s done right. Glad to know that this fragrance utilizes naturals as synthetic leather accords can sometimes be quite harsh. I haven’t tried any offerings from Matiere Premiere but will be doing more research as this review has definitely peaked my interest. Regards from Sydney, Australia.

  • I loved the depth in the arrival , it had some many little gems I want to mine more!

I’ve not tried anything from the brand but I’ve seen a lot of people I respect say great things so I’m very curious to try for myself.

  • I liked historical part of this article. I find idea to create perfume inspired by falcon’s gloves very interesting.
I love leather note very much. So I would like to win this perfume.
My favorite leather perfume is Fetish PH Roja.

  • I’m glad Falcon Leather in not a linear fragrance , the whole metamorphosis from dark animalic leather with birch tar , to comforting resins and suede, is what intrigues me the most.
Matiere Premiere I have no experience with, but the perfumer i know. Gucci Intense Oud punches above its price range.
Thanks to Despina and Matiere Premiere

I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiere or any of the perfumers previous work but Despina has certainly made me curious to explore. I have only smelled birch tar in Hiram Green’s Hyde and I found the bbq effect intriguing, would be excited to see how this differs or shares similarities. I love how Despina describes the developers to of the wearing and anything that reminiscent of Amelia Earhart is a winner for me! I’m in Brooklyn, NY.

I’ve smelled all Matiere Premiere fragrances, and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Encens Suave
    2. Santal Austral
    3. Falcon Leather
The latter is an interesting fragrance , with both dark, and light side. Funny thing is I perceive a lot of sweet tobacco. It may be some combination between the saffron, and the resins, I don’t know, but it’s prominent. Despina never mentioned tobacco, so it could very well be my body chemistry.
I don’t think Falcon Leather is a butch fragrance, confident woman can easily pull it off.
Aurélien Guichard work is quite diverse, from famous clubbing designers, to sophisticated niche perfumes .
    All profiles I already follow
    Thank you

As someone who has always enjoyed leathers, I had no idea what actually went into a leather note, so what I enjoyed most in this articl was learning that it’s all not at all leather but rather birch tar!

I really love Bond 9. Chinatown, and I live in the US.

Nice Article Despina! I enjoyed reading how this fragrance is inspired by falcon’s gloves scent. I have never smelled such perfume before. Layering Falcon Leather with Matiere Premiere Neroli Oranger and Radical Rose sounds beautiful. I’d love to try them. Greetings from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
